you're right it's not ast, because ast is like scrubbing nails over your taint. whm gets stuff earlier then ast gets their equivalent outside of ast having an ogcd sooner. whm gets a much better personal buff that feels good to press while ast has a bunch of party buffs that may as well do nothing in levelling content because you're only buffing 3 other people and you can't guarentee they aren't mouthbreathers wasting your cards. even small things like whm having up front damage on your dot and holy stun make it a lot more fun in the leveling experience then ast having to hit 6 buttons to give someone a 3% damage boost and whm also has the nuclear option of being able to go gorilla with your burst healing to force people through content that ast and its 200 regens can't deal with as easily.
is ast a better class for raiding/trials? maybe, but whm is a lot more fun because you have the low level unga satstfying buttons and then a lot of nuance playing around your relatively limited ogcd healing
AST has so many ogcds later on that you don't even have to use them all in most cases. Regens are just the icing on the cake
exactly, thats fricking boring. sitting there and having all these buttons you don't actually need to use so you're just giving people 3% in a dungeon pull
higher level whm meanwhile has (comparatively) huge amounts of aoe damage, actually has to think about their healing cooldowns a little due to how they operate vs ast, and can decide to larp as a tank due to having so much healing throughput instead of having 200 regens like ast does
WHM is the most reactionary job there is, and it's boring as frick. Something happens, you push a button and you heal. That's all there is to it. With AST, you can plan out your heals beforehand by knowing the fight and you never have to use a GCD heal unlike WHM with it's 3 GCD Lily abilities.

this is the exact opposite of true. with ast you hit star on cooldown and if it happens to explode when healing happens you dont heal earlier but thats exactly how assize on whm works. macro needs people to take hits first but that's identical to how lilybell works where it gets way more value if you're taking damage after it's out, only lilybell has more nuance to it because you can spread it out over several mechanics and it can snapshot the healing potency up from assylum/temperance
everything else ast has is just a regen cooldown you hit on reaction to damage. whm meanwhile wants to minmax the value out of your lilies so they heal as much as possible (hopefully under some combo of assize/plenary/assylum/temperance) while not overcapping your blood lilies but also moving a lily into buff window. you have way more flex room for "it's fine if everyone sits at 20% for the next 30s because I can assize + lily and they sholdn't be taking damage before then" style plays where ast is jsut going to hit one of its ogcds and stop thinking about it because you never actually need to drop several cooldowns for a big mechanic the way whm does.
oh yeah lilybell is also more interesting then macro cuz you can deploy the heals away from you which can be cool for fights where people need to be spread way the frick apart from eachother like p7 or p10

I stopped playing a bit after the second to last shadowbringers patch. I always enjoyed how there was lore included in a lot of the job quests but since they phased that out with the role quest stuff, do the new jobs have any lore at all or are they just going to be added in now without much explanation? I'm mostly interested in the Sage stuff since healer is what I usually play in video games and is what I do for a living irl.
New jobs still get a job questline. SGE wasn't as lore heavy, but it was still rather interesting to play through.
Though i personally don't enjoy the job much.

I did the same thing, and it was very boring. At least in dungeons and trials you have to keep on your toes, but in solo instances, there's no risk at all of you dying because you can just heal yourself. I'm hoping healers get a real rotation one day.

yes, if me and the rest of the group are good enough at the fight that I don't need aetherflow healing I can throw out a bit of extra damage instead of just having healing cooldowns sit on my bar unused like ast or having to throw away my meter on overhealing to get MP like sage, it's a good system and scholar has enough non aetherflow healing cooldowns that the idea of someone griefing because they hit energy drain too much doesn't happen. you literally have the fairy tether as a refund for using energy drain instead of healing.

There is no way a healer will survive a w2w on her own. The damage will probably outmatch the healing and even if you manage, how are you supposed to hit them while you heal yourself?

holy stun, assize, blood lily after healing myself several times. white mage also has lilybell which literally heals you for more if you're taking damage while it's out several times in a row and bene for a free refill

direct healing causes large amounts of enmity, especially overheal. spamming cure 3 and lilies under some combo plenary/temperance/assize heals you + the dps and is probably going to overheal at least 1 person causing the enmity to go back onto you outside of shit like summoners or reapers who have crazy aoe damage and can just shield themselves while you pocket heal them instead
i've done this in expert roulette all the time when I get tanks who are going too slow and then try to pull the you pull you tank meme.

That’s why I always play tank. Never have to deal with those asshats. I also immediately pull every normal fight as soon as the gay little barrier goes away.

only if it comes to cure 3 spam and even then you get about 5-6 of them before going oom before even using your thin airs. everything else that you would use to heal is free
running out of mp and cooldowns is the main thing that stops this but the point isn't is it a good idea, the point is that its possible. even dungeon TB's dont hit hard enough that you can't live with benison + aquaveil (15% mit is pretty fricking good) if you're full hp unless you're really undergeared

30-40% of my healing on golbuttz comes from liturgy alone.
My solution was to level up one of the DPS first, and then use roulettes to level all my healers up

white mage is genuinely one of the strongest jobs in lore while also being the big dick dps/heal number healer instead of a support robot and the class quests are basically you running circles around all the white mage girls so as long as you avoid wearing the class gear I feel like white mage works out ok as a lead.

if you want big fricking number to appear over someones head, no healer matches white mage

that's not them requesting only those roles, the PF in this game has a weird glitch where sometimes when people leave a party the slot gets locked into whatever their specific class was until the host fixes it. What you're seeing there is a bunch of people leaving it all at once

Absolutely not, PvP movesets are not designed to handle anything in PvE. They're meant to disable and curbstomp human players and most jobs don't have any kind of answer for more than one target at a time so dungeons are out. Limit Breaks range between too powerful to completely useless in PvE
This is why you design the PvE encounters to actually be mobile. And not being able to melt down every enemy in the entire dungeon with one move is a GOOD thing, the w2w shit has made dungeons the absolute boring braindead slog they are

So, what, we hit an equilibrium of everybody trying to stunlock a raid boss for as long as possible and it evens back out to the boss sitting still but you have a much simpler rotation? People complain about bosses teleporting around or going into phase transitions enough as it is. This isn't even getting into the fact that party composition would dead-lock to having Bard, Astrologian, Ninja, Dancer and Paladin in it even worse than Stormblood and Heavensward had locks for their own parties.

mch is moderately complex. it's a bunch of stuff that in a vaccum seems simple (dont cap on gauss round, dont overcap meter, hit drill on cooldown) but all the parts together can lead to you doing something that causes problems for you 30s later because of quirks in the fight timing and in general it's open to a lot of in the minute decison making/speadsheeting in order to figure out when you should summon queens or dump meter so that you're carrying 100/100 into the perfect window and have everything lined up smoothly.
especially since depending on your gcd this shit can change a lot
The other two choices aren't really dps so yes by technicality. They're supports, so people either splurge their entire kit under your buffs the moment its up, or you wish you picked an actual dps because you keep seeing enrage.

My problem is button bloat on healers. What's the point of like half the spells when encounters are tuned to only use OGCD heals and use all GCDs to deal damage? Why not just get rid of them or retune encounters to be more like WoW where you actual use a healing ability on every cooldown.

Clerics vary hard even between tabletop RPGs. Some (like FF ended up doing) have them as a squishy caster the same as a Wizard or analogue, D&D used to like having an armored hammer-man with heals and holy spells but now mostly emphasizes that angle of it if you serve a War god.
Even in the garbage piece of shit that is 5e, clerics are still mainly used for utility. Usually buffs, save-or-sucks and terrain control. Sometimes even damage dealers. Only shitters play clerics as healers.
True but they're still the best suited for healing in most scenarios. Otherwise you get to pray you've got a healer sorcerer from another splat or the paladin didn't squander his healing points on scrapes earlier.

Dragoons wear spiky or even bladed armor because they're at constant risk of being snatched out of the air by a dragon's mouth. Healers used to be varied in design, gameplay, and possessing separate identities.
Now they're all 1 button spam with 1 obligatory dot every 30s. Healing consists of a staple single target, staple aoe, staple single target and aoe shield/regen, single target DR, etc etc.
This game got streamlined for idiots who don't even care to play the game at a level where the subtleties of each job was relevant.

I do wanna play healer, but at the same time, it seems stressful as frick to try to keep everyone alive.
It becomes muscle-memory after you spend the first few dungeons shitting your pants. Same goes for tanks. Dungeons acclimate you very well to the kind of stresses healers and tanks are supposed to go through.
It's stressful until you get good at the game. Once you're semi-experienced you realize how bad most players are and will feel comfortable saving their asses (or leaving them to die if they deserve it).
its only stressful in savage stuff, but that isn't from healing, its from general memorization of some long ass dance routine. You can blast out a ton of healing in this game, you can chat more than anyone other than the tank in 4mans.
I have 7000+ hours played, cleared 8 raid tiers, 4 ultimates, every job at 90 and done basically all the content in the game including Eureka, Bozja, BLU, and more. Convince me to resub I feel like there's nothing left for me to do except play story for 1 month every expansion.

I don't play Dancer much but the Ala Mhigan coat is all I'll ever need. Distinctly masculine and chad, while still fitting Dancer because it has a lot of draped material that whirls when you do your fruity dancer twirls.
Depends on what you're going for, but I mostly play tanks so I actually have the most recommendations for them. Depending on the exact flavor of military, the Alliance Coat (or the recolor they added in EW leveling gear) might be a good place to start. It looks armored and uniform-ish. Other than that, I would say Royal Volunteer, Imperial, and Bozjan gear often have a sort of "military" or modern soldier type of look to them while still fitting into XIV.

Samurais have axes. Warriors have polearms and hammers. Paladins have katanas and can forego a shield. Also some 1 handed polearms. Most gunbreaker weapons aren’t guns. Ninjas use shortwords.
