The combat is fairly standard ATB fare, only spiced up by being able to execute specific types of commands when prompted by party members to trigger a bonus skill. Exploration is mostly gathering materials from very obvious glowing gathering points and hoping that RNGesus smiles on you and confers the bonuses you need on the materials you need to craft good equipment.
I wanted to get into Atelier Ryza because of her design alone, and the fact gathering/crafting focused gameplay soundt fun. I didn't mind any of the mechanics, but HOLY frick was the story and dialogue the most extremely bland generic shit I ever sat through. I don't even mind slow paced, slice-of-life, friends adventure summer type shit. It just felt so fricking void of personality.
Also thought Lila looked great until I noticed those disgusting alien squid tentacles stapled to her head.

Her clothes in the second game are damaged and worn out due to lack of materials for making new clothes being readily available on Kurken Island, and also why her outfit seems to be both too tight/small and decorated so randomly. Her brown leather belt seems to be a men's belt, probably something secondhand traded for from a shiphand. There's a sidequest in the first game involving getting the one tailor on the island back on his feet and back into business by setting him up with an apprentice.
