State of the industry

Tencent, Sony and Microsoft are the MAJOR video game producers and publishers.
Valve, Ubisoft, etc, are minor players, and people treating them like juggernauts are wrong.
Everything bellow the second row is basically indies.

Publishing is mostly about distribution, actual IP ownership still lies with the developer.

Valve doesn't own Turtle Rock and they definitely do not own Dota, they made Dota 2.
Blizzard isn't owned by Microsoft yet.
THQ isn't even there (i think).

      >Valve doesn't own Dota

        Anonymous

        Who else is publishing Dota?

DotA is a Warcraft III gamemode. Valve made Dota 2 because nobody owned the gamemode. Blizzard later pretended to own DotA because they wanted to make their own version and likely name it that (now Heroes of the Storm).
it's all rather confusing and apparently Blizzard "acquired" DotA-Allstars which probably means nothing these days.

          Anonymous

custom maps were owned by the creators, that's why individuals like guinsoo or icefrog matter. Beginning with SC2, Blizzard has taken steps to ensure anything created with their toolset is Blizzard owned.

            Anonymous

yeah but on the wiki it claims that Blizzard bought DotA-Allstars which would make no sense in this case since IceFrog is on Valve's side and they've been casually making their own game.

            Anonymous

And because maps and mods used to be owned by creators, you had a lot of IP infringing content, like Warhammer or Lord of the Rings or whatever.
And now that the developer/publisher owns the rights, they hire moderation to ensure such third party properties and assets can't be used, because they'd be a legal liability. A Witcher map on Starcraft 2, with TW1 assets imported, would get Blizzard sued by CDPR. So the modding scene suffered. And modding tools get restricted, and you can only use some assets, not import anything you want.

That Blizzard Activision aquisition by MS is still not even approved and has had several setbacks. I still think it'll go through because no one gives a shit about monopolies apparently but it just seems premature.

Yeah, this should definitely get tossed, in a world where government officials actually do more than pretend to perform their jobs.

Europe seems to be giving them some trouble over the acquisition plan, at least.

Why would it be prevented? What monopoly would it create?
Microsoft already does all the things Activision-Blizzard does, they aren't adding any new markets, just expanding market share. And nowhere does their market share expand to monopoly levels.

This is a HUGE topic and you'll get lots of answers as to why the purchase is a bad deal for the consumer (presumably what entities like the FTC fight for). I would say the number one thing you need to keep in mind is that nothing happens in a vacuum, the MS acquisition is not the first MS has done and it's certainly not the first industry disruptive purchase (Zenimax) its made. It's clear there is a larger campaign here. Two, I would say that generally speaking - though it's definitely more aggressively postured in the EU - that vertical integrations, like the MS Act/Blizz acquisition, are especially in the spotlight currently.
Beyond that I would say to do your own research into how monopolies are bad because I think your current understanding (well the market percentage blah blah blah I love sucking corporate dick so much Chiquita banana made me a man) is pretty limited and it actually paints you as someone who isn't arguing in good faith. Basically you're a b***h.

          Anonymous

Microsoft wouldn't be "vertically integrating" anything, they already have access to all the markets AB has. Not like they are a cruise company buying a port and a shipyard. They are a video game developer and publisher, buying a video game developer and publisher. Nothing that was horizontal is being made vertical.
And they aren't cornering any market, they are going from 15-20% market to 20-25% market or whatever. Its not monopoly and I see no reason why it would be prevented. And I think it won't be prevented.
Also I'm straight, so I exclusively lick corporate pussy, and not wiener. Stop assuming people's sexualities, bigot.

Valve screwed over the Artifact fanbase by cancelling the Artifact 2.0 beta without even allowing users to invite friends like they said they would in January 2021 and does not deserve your financial support for these gross consumer-unfriendly practices.

Yeah this shit is legitimately moronic, It conflates being a shareholder to actually buying a studio or IP like Playstation/Naughty Dog or Microsoft/343. Just going off of what you mentioned, the idiot couldn't even keep consistent logic They say that Tencent supposedly owns all of epic despite only owning 40% of the shares in the company (ignoring that Epic had to come out and blatantly state that Tencent doesn't own them, and Riot did the same thing). They list Krafton as partial ownership but what about Epic? they also list platinum despite not buying them or their shares if they have any. Valve doesn't own DoTA and they didn't even spell "Anno" correctly for Ubisoft. Don't even get me satrted on Nintendo, Nintendo doesn't even outright own Pokemon.

Looking at this makes me realize that I should buy Nintendo stock. Microsoft barely does anything with its studios. Sony's shit doesn't sell as well as Nintendo's shit. Pokemon is the most profitable IP in the world, and Nintendo owns Mario and Animal Crossing on top of that. Super undervalued.
