I "suck" at using a dpad?
It's mushy with no feedback at all, and rolling my thumb between directions starts to hurt after a while.
It's passable for menu navigation and shortcuts, but frick using it for platformers or fighting games.

unless they changed the design at some point and my controllers or outdated, or you have some kind of mutant controller, the DS4 uses a hat switch d-pad like most other controllers where all four directions are one button that rocks around
you can tell for sure if the side opposite the one you're pressing lifts upwards or if you can twist the entire d-pad around
the real critical problem is the rubber membrane beneath the d-pad is squishy as shit and offers very little travel, so you don't get much of a click when you press a direction and you don't get much movement either
              it's especially bad on diagonals
i know there's parts out there to replace the hat switch with individual buttons (dremel tool), or replace the membrane with mechanical switches, but i can't be fricked to put up with that for the sake of a controller that also uses micro USB

              [...]
              [...]

if evo gays like mushy d-pads for reasons of less travel before pressing the button or god knows what, then i have even more reason to not care for them
i prefer to have pronounced feedback from the controller when i push buttons instead of fricking nothing
continue to fellate your lifeless membrane dpad all you like but it won't change the fact it feels like complete shit to use regardless of any asinine micro-advantage obsessive morons try to derive from it at the highest and most autistic competitive level

well i havent tried the steam controller, but the DS4 is by far the best controller out of "the big three" for PC games, that touchpad and gyro are a invaluable when used alongside steam input

shit i must made a config to play FTL with that thing, outrageous

that being said, if volvo ever manufactures a Steam Controller 2 with all the inputs of the Steam Deck, it would surpass the DS4

The touch pad on steam controller is pretty good with its haptics and then the gyro. It basically trying to emulate a track ball. I think it works pretty decent for k&m games. Doesn't feel quite as refined as the first party controllers though.

I thought the d-pad was fine on the ps4. The PS5's d-pad on the other hand is hot garbage.

only touched sony controllers my whole life, I actually wonder what the competition feels like. Ps4 controller has quite the good grip but still feels like triggers are way too resistant and almost useless for fighting games, sticks also sore my thumbs after labbing combos for hours. For everything else like beat them all and so on it is perfectly fine.

It's shit. Dualsense fixes most of this (battery still sucks), with the flipside of having worse face buttons and a much worse D-pad. The bitter pill to swallow is that all the major controllers suck nowadays.

You can really tell which anons in this thread play games that actually need the D-Pad vs the anons that rarely ever touch it. The DS4 D-Pad is great. It's not "the best ever" D-Pad, but it beats the Xbox ones hands down.

      >It's not "the best ever" D-Pad, but it beats the Xbox ones hands down.
ding ding ding, correct. I'm sick of the dickriding that the Xbone and Series D-pads get. They miss the point of a good clicky D-pad entirely; Xbox's feel grindy rather than snappy.

I grew up with the among best d-pads (Sega) and Playstation d-pads are okay, fairly good even. I prefer Sega 3 button, Saturn, and SNES, but Dual Sense is decent and PS4 isn't bad. I like circular over the separated but can't deny it works. Can't comment on Xbox as its uneven with the offset dpad to buttons makes my inner retro gamer vomit. Nintendo's last good dpad was on the SNES so don't bother, I have every damn one of theirs and mid at best (WiiU Pro was almost such a good controller tho, unholy long battery, just needed better buttons and analogue.)

Remember, even just getting an analog stick on there was a fight. They originally wanted the Steam Controller to be much more of simply a "PC controls in a gamepad-ish formfactor" solution rather than a hybrid like the final product.

I would only agree with your assessment if these things were on the controller, cause the Dual Shock 4 is certainly the next best thing to a steam controller.

The pipe dream for me is a Steam Deck Controller with all the same controls as an 'eck but the haptic motors/triggers of a DualSense for PS5. I would pay far more than what is reasonable to pay for a controller if that existed.
