the left trackpad is dumb, it needed a proper dpad.
it's the best for 3rd person shooters.
bad for fighting games as stated here
What about first person shooters? Ignoring mouse + KB obviously.
This, also the abxy buttons should've been swapped with the right trackpad, it's fricking awkward for 2D platformers and the like.
Having built an arduino contoller with roughly the same spacing and location.
No
>not ZQDS
I found it clumsy for games, but great as a couch-remote for your PC. I could never get a hang for the trackpads in games, but that's just me.
It good
It has potential, but I feel like it is held back since it is somewhat dependent on the game's settings. The biggest problem is that some games won't let you use controller and mouse input at the same time, forcing you to emulate analog sticks with the track pads and gyro or try to bind everything to keyboard and mouse and loose analog inputs. Beyond that it can still be a bit tricky to get sensitivities right. Track pad should be better than analog for camera control in skilled hands, but I still feel like analog+gyro is more consistent and comfortable than track pad+gyro. Track pad lets you set it to activate gyro only when touching the track pad so that you can just lift your thumb to recenter similar to picking up a mouse, but it also means you loose access to the face buttons while aiming.
A potential Steam Controller 2 that borrows from the Deck layout should be a great controller since it would be a more general purpose controller with less compromise. You can't buy the Steam Controller anymore, so you may as well wait since it is pretty much guaranteed that Valve will keep putting out more hardware to put off making games.
I found it ideal for games that are a mix of 3D platforming/action with 3rd person shooter elements.
Use the stick and right pad for navigating the 3D space, and then toggle into gyro aiming when needed.
A simple example would be the new Tomb Raider games and similar.
You got the best of both worlds: 360 degree freedom of a controller for moving around, and mouse like precision for aiming. And each one without compromising the other.
The Steam Controller itself isn't strictly necessary anymore to accomplish that thanks to Steam Input, but what they started with this controller was revolutionary and grossly under appreciated.
I wanted to try it too, but most people selling it a lot higher price...
you can only use it with games you purchased on Steam, correct? that makes it DoA
nah, you can make a profile for any program, bit of a pain though to first set up.
Does Windows really still not have the equivalent of SC Controller?
The ergonomics aren't that great and it feels pretty cheap, especially the bumpers and while I like the presence of the rear paddles I think that flexing some plastic is a pretty bad way to use those buttons overall.
The presence of the left trackpad is questionable and locks the controller out of being able to use a D-Pad well. It would be far better if PC games as a whole had far more rebindable controls with the ability to hotkey menu items and use both mouse and controller inputs at the same time but it just loses out in that regard because a lot of games are designed around the limitations of the standard controller.
As shown with the Steam Deck and the Index knuckles (probably, haven't tried either of them) the Steam controller suffers by far the most from sticking to the traditional button and stick grouping that controllers have been stuck with since the dualshock.
In my experience the SC makes my hands cramp after extended 2D shit when attempting to fake a D-Pad and it feels awkward to try to use the actual stick or face buttons for 3D shit. This isn't a problem I have with either the 360 controller or the DS4.
Works fine on Linux apparently. I haven't actually tried it outside of Steam despite running Linux now.
>I haven't actually tried it outside of Steam despite running Linux now
SC-Controller's UI is pretty fricking jank but it works perfectly fine once configured.
>you can only use it with games you purchased on Steam, correct?
Incorrect
I have one, I hate it
Some people swear by it though, I don't really get it, I guess maybe if you really get used to it it's a halfway decent substitute for a mouse for certain games
To me the fact that the Steam Deck gives you two proper analog sticks and a proper D-Pad is all you need to know that this thing is a failed experiment
Slept on big time, built in gyro, and community built presets.
If it had a Genesis dpad, it would literally be the best controller ever.
As it stands. it's pretty great for PC gaming but not having an actual DPAD is a pretty severe doeside.
>buy it to play STALKER SOC on the couch
>controller doesn't work with specifically that game
false start never made me give it a chance
frick this gay planet, and no, I don't give a frick if it does work now for some reason or another
Its always worked with every PC game, you probably just needed to set it up or wait for someone else to release a community profile for it that you like.
No, it did not work with STALKER. Don't gaslight me. I went troubleshooting.
Not gaslighting anon. When you push a button configured to 'w', or swipe your finger on the trackpad set up as a mount the Steam Controller just sends the exact same output to the system as a keyboard and mouse.
To games its absolutely indistinguishable.
The only thing that some games have problems with is a mix of gamepad and keyboard/mouse which is why sometimes the default configuration doesn't work and you have to use the all keyboard/mouse or all gamepad input configurations for those games.
Better for any game that uses camera control than a traditional gamepad.
Not as good for retro games that are dependent on the d-pad.
The Neptune layout of the Deck is a definite improvement. Just waiting on a new Steam Controller, which is probably the reason why the Deck's dock was delayed.
i have an xbox and a steam controller
i use the steam controller way more
i find it comfy
Not unsurprising, It's ergonomics tism
garbage. only use it to control my htpc from my couch. not for vidya
The best
Just the best
I use the gyros as a steering wheel for driving games, and I love it for that. Also, I'll play Sega Genesis games with the trackpads only, so I make absolutely no noise when there are other people in the room working.
Who good is it without the dongle?
If you have an alright bluetooth adapter it pretty good.
I don't generally use mine like that because it's a b***h to put in and remove batteries.
>batteries
what the actual frick.
Yeah, Steam controller uses AA batteries.
Damn. I thought it was rechargable through usb. I mean i could buy rechargable battery but it would have been better to include it from the start.
Technically, at any point controllers could implement charging circuits for recharging AA batteries (especially now with USB-C being standard)
And given that AA batteries are an open, documented standard, it would be by all objective measures better than some lithium battery that MAYBE you could find one to wire the leads into the connector for the controller and not fry it.
Of course nobody does this and the Xbox One controller is double buttholes for having both A CHARGING CIRCUIT FOR THE BATTERY PACK BUILT INTO THE CONTROLLER AND NO SUPPORT FOR CHARGING AAs. Presumably for no reason.
>A CHARGING CIRCUIT FOR THE BATTERY PACK BUILT INTO THE CONTROLLER AND NO SUPPORT FOR CHARGING AAs
Might be the same as the 8bitdo Pro 2 that uses extra pins to charge the battery pack Those are of course not compatible with normal AAs.
It also supports bluetooth, might have more latency though.
Was using it a lot and thought it was pretty good until one of the grips started requiring more and more force to press
I use this to play visual novels because they need a mouse
it’s pretty damn good but they perfected it with the deck and I hope they make a Steam Controller 2 based on it. Of course 75% of what makes it great is the Steam input software, which works with any controller
Yes. It's literally the only controller that lets you do a mix of controller and keyboard inputs and does it well. Customization is really good too, overkill even with stuff like trigger thresholds.
