Literally the best handheld ever made. The only shitty thing about the deck is it made my switch a shitty waste of money.

Same as the OG Switch which is like a third of the Mariko unit Switch which is every unit on the market now.

Even the Switch Lite gets half an hour more and it has a smaller battery than the main units.

I refuse to believe people with handhelds aren't bounding themselves to outlets whenever possible.

yup, 'fraid so. And it's even more embarrassing to play in public. Might as well just bring a 120lb CRT with you.

I get like 90 minutes, but I almost always leave it plugged into the dock

        Anonymous

I wouldn't say it's your "fault" but battery life this short is almost always user "error". If I hack my switch to remove sensible power limits I can drain its battery in a flash too. Steam Deck is a portable system and you need to use it like one if that's what you actually want from it.

Monster Hunter World for example. I can have like 90 minute battery life if I set the framerate uncapped and put all the settings up. But after I took the time to figure out which settings make the most difference for battery life and image quality, I got it over 3 hours with a very stable 45 FPS cap. With a small screen it's not at all bothersome and 45 also minimizes input lag on OLED.

There's also an endless variety of less demanding games to play. If I'm playing a AAA game I want to do it on a big screen anyway. Don't be Sony, pick games that are actually suited to portable play.

I'm not saying it's anywhere near as convenient as a console but better battery life is there if you want it. It's a PC, it is what you make of it.

it depends on how much you are using the gpu and cpu, more graphically intense games shorten the battery, but yes it sucks

      Anonymous

On my OLED deck with carefully chosen settings Monster Hunter World runs for just over 3 hours at 45 FPS and looks quite good. Better than PS4 settings, certainly.

Simpler games or emulators last a lot longer. Recettear for example says 8 hours IIRC with a 3 watt(IIRC) power limit and still plays at full speed.

I'll always wish battery life was better, but the OLED version takes it just out of "this isn't really a portable system" territory IMO. Like, OG 3DS has worse battery life and nobody would say they have to always play it around an outlet.

If you try to play anything recent on even half-decent settings, you're probably going to need to plug in within 30 minutes.

For the OG it depends on what you're playing. It's significantly better than the Switch's, but because you can play very demanding games with high settings and framerates it can drain faster and people use that to shitpost. The OLED though has very nice battery life regardless.

They've always been cheap so they could sell the hardware at a profit, it was just cheap shit that wouldn't break. But now you have them denying the existence of stick drift for years.

it scales with performance but if you're going for 60 FPS on Switch games at a higher resolution over Yuzu or Ryujinx, you're looking at 2 hours on a good day (also depends on the game)

Yeah the deck sure isn't emulating a recent console better than the original. That would be insane. It is however emulating that console, playing 50,000 other games and being a working pc

      >Yeah the deck sure isn't emulating a recent console better than the original
Depends on the game. Some cases it is some cases it isn't. It's much more on the emulator than the deck itself.

'eck user here, a lot of switch games flat out better on 'eck over switch, some have issues but that's to do with the switch emulation not being air tight. hyrule warriors plays better on 'eck than switch, same goes for
    >totk
    >all 3 Kirby games
    >Mario kart 8
    >mario wonder
    >Mario + rabbids
    >red dead redemption (which is literally the best possible way to play rdr on PC now cause ps3 and Xbox emulations were garbage)
    >Mario rpg
i can keep going. and that's just for switch emulation, completely discounting every other console 'eck can emulate and literally tons of the steam library running really good. Steam Deck is literally the best purchase I've ever made, end of fricking story.

And is a better option that the Retroid garbage of Temu, Deck can install emulators with a single click and import roms directly of a pendrive

homie, the deck gets 25-30 FPS on TotK and a lot of people cap it to 20 for consistency. TotK on Switch is consistent 30 outside of the Ultra Hand which drops frames like mad.
Mario Kart, Wonder, and RPG all run at 60FPS and the Deck can't 2x res them, nor is it needed for the 900p screen so it doesn't run them better than the Switch, it just runs them the same.

I own both and I'll be honest, when I picked up my switch for the first time in 6 months I was impressed by how lightweight it is by comparison.

That said, I have >400 games I can play on Steam Deck without additional cost and that pretty much settles any comparison. The moment SD was announced I felt like an absolute fool for (re-)buying any games on Switch, and I'm hoping to sell my Switch with the account and all its games included because I'll never have use for a Nintendo product again.

This is true, the deck isn't as good of a switch as the switch. I don't think that's quite as much of an own as tendies think though, it's kind of the lowest possible bar there is since the Switch is the Switch

There is literally no reason to get the switch if you have a deck. No, nintendo's shitty online is not a reason, there's emulation solutions for that too.

        Anonymous

If that's the case, why bother getting the Deck, either?

          Anonymous

Because it's a handheld that's just as convenient to use while being able to play vastly more games and do way more things than the switch can. I used to think the only thing that justified a console's existence was portability because none of the handheld PCs ever got it right. I now think there is no reason for a console to exist, they're just scummier and worse PCs.

            Anonymous

congrats you came to one of the same conclusions all pc players have come to for the past 50 years
the other being games are what matter and the only reason to buy a console is for the games and nothing else

              Anonymous

Handheld PCs were awful and extremely expensive before the deck, so that's something that only happened recently.
There is no reason to own a console, exclusives are cancer, but consumers aren't smart enough nor have the patience to simply vote with their wallet.

The Deck is good, but I own both a Deck and a Switch and honestly, I prefer the Switch.
Its light OS is a lot better than SteamOS and being smaller it's a lot more pick up and play.
Don't get me wrong though, the Deck is great. I'd honestly just rather use my Switch for handheld play and my PC when I want a more powerful experience. I can't speak to the Deck OLED as my Deck is an original but the screen indeed is pretty shit.
Then again, original Switch screen was shit too.
