The biggest thing is some countries can't have a psn account due to legal reasons or in some places, requires your real ID to be tied to it. And the fact that it is being forced to changed months after it wasn't an issue. A lot of gaming frustrations are coming to a head it seems. Additionally, they said that Sony cannot make them do this as they are a fully independent studio. After that, they posted crying emoji's on twitter, so now everything is okay.

Not only is Sony anti-consumer but to even make business with them they are forcing third party businesses to be just as anti-consumer as them. Now players will refund their game en masse because gamers - unlike them - refuse to do business with Sony. The only way they can fix this and recover their lost playerbase is to cut off all dealings with Sony completely and manage what they have left on Steam without requiring PSN to login. They shot themselves in the foot by agreeing to anything Sony asks them to do.
The same reason a game needs an EA account, or a Ubisoft account, or a Capcom account, or a Battle.net account, or a Bethesda account, or a Microsoft account, or an Activision acount, or...
A Battle.net account binds progress agnostic of platform. You link your B.Net to Steam and if you had, for example, played Diablo 4 on GamePass and then buy it on Steam all your characters and progress are retained
The same goes for Microsoft accounts carrying progress between Xbox and PC via linking.
PSN doesn't do any of this, your Steam game progress, saves, etc are locked to that PC and going onto a PS5 with the same PSN won't give you anything.
It's 100% possible, google it, don't give up.

It's a matter of precedent, you have to draw the line somewhere. Before you could just install the game you bought and play it. Now you have to agree to special terms, give data to third party game apps, install a dedicated and hyper invasive anti cheat application, and on top of that the game keeps coming up with new demands like having to volunteer your personal information to services tied to the publisher, a publisher famous for selling that information or getting hacked nonstop. If you keep saying "alright" to this shit you'll end up selling your kidneys to them within a decade.
Helldivers 2 doesn't need a PSN account to work. Most of the playerbase is on Steam and never had a PSN account, the crossplay of Helldivers 2 functions without PSN accounts, there's already a dedicated anticheat program that came with the game so PSN as an anti-cheat measure is senseless. There's literally no technical or logical reason for the game to suddenly demand PSN usage other than Sony trying to do weird money related mental gymnastics and trying to gauge how much they can invade player privacy.

You can get both. Most times it's much easier to just get it to your Steam wallet though, because then you can use it on something else instantly. Meanwhile to get it back onto your card can take like 30 days.

Since every game that asks for your third party account. There are exceptions, but this always end up being the same case. With all accounts now being connected to PSN, theres no reason to list your steam username anymore as they can just list your PSN.

play up to 2 hours and for any reason you can refund it (it doesnt run well on your system or very laggy because the servers are dogshit for example)
if devs or publishers do something moronic, like removing content like destiny 2 did, steam will let you refund, I believe that when killing floor 2 came out of early access, steam also allowed refunds because they had such fundamental changes that the game you bought in early access was no longer there so if you weren't happy, steam gave you a refund despite maybe having 1k hours

A Battle.net account binds progress agnostic of platform. You link your B.Net to Steam and if you had, for example, played Diablo 4 on GamePass and then buy it on Steam all your characters and progress are retained
The same goes for Microsoft accounts carrying progress between Xbox and PC via linking.
PSN doesn't do any of this, your Steam game progress, saves, etc are locked to that PC and going onto a PS5 with the same PSN won't give you anything.

If you keep saying "alright" to this shit you'll end up selling your kidneys to them within a decade.
Helldivers 2 doesn't need a PSN account to work. Most of the playerbase is on Steam and never had a PSN account, the crossplay of Helldivers 2 functions without PSN accounts, there's already a dedicated anticheat program that came with the game so PSN as an anti-cheat measure is senseless. There's literally no technical or logical reason for the game to suddenly demand PSN usage other than Sony trying to do weird money related mental gymnastics and trying to gauge how much they can invade player privacy.

Since every game that asks for your third party account. There are exceptions, but this always end up being the same case. With all accounts now being connected to PSN, theres no reason to list your steam username anymore as they can just list your PSN.
