Seems to be a couple of games with no demos so I guess Steam fricked up and put them. There are way less demos I've wanted to play so far so it sucks when I see something interesting with no demo.

I don't know why people shat on the Toxic Crusaders demo. Despite knowing next to nothing about the franchise it plays as a perfectly serviceable beat-em-up. I get Ninja Baseball Bat Man vibes due to how unhinged it feels at times. Feels like a classic game that could have been released in 90's arcades, though the quips and talking are a bit much.

Thoughts on Quasimorph and Cross Blitz?
Those would be the ones I am most interested in myself. But I've admittedly got some niche tastes, as might be evident by the above titles being selected at all.

      Anonymous

      >Quasimorph
Played the demo a few months back and it's pretty cool. The exploration and combat go into each other pretty well. The only drag is when you have to backtrack across the whole map to find some shit you missed. Pretty decent so far

  8. 11 months ago
    Anonymous

I mostly pulled h-games and VNs.
    >Vampire Syndicate: Gangs of Moonscar
It's a laudable effort for a single dev, but the WEG-tier CG smut scenes are predictably lame and the combat is just okay. CRPGs aren't really my genre, so I'm sure it will have its fans, but I'm not among them.
    >Take me to the Dungeon!
Really good. Does enough to distinguish itself from its contemporaries to feel fresh, but the writing gets in the way of the mechanics, and I still don't like lose=h-scene mechanics.
    >Isekai Janken Hero
It's rock paper scissors combat(literally) and gets out of its own way to get you to the porn, which is pretty well animated. Final game is only going to have 4 girls, so I think the price is going to be the biggest deciding factor here.
    >Lost Chapter
Does the card battler thing really well. You can try for a pure maiden run or focus on getting monsters off by being loose so you can get rich as hell and then bludgeon them to death with your sack of riches. It's got a full release out already that's easily found on F95.
    >Succubus Girl/Holy prostitute Emily
Untranslated, couldn't even try to play it.
    >Painting Thief
Neat concept completely let down by a boring as shit gameplay loop and bland smut. Total skip.
    >Rhya's Crusade
Megaman like thing. Pretty fun, but also punishingly hard. Smut is very so-so.
    >Malicious Reload II
Looked interesting, but it crashed on startup and never ran.
    >Vampire Hunters
Dishwater dull shooter that feels like a mobile game. Beat the demo and felt ripped off.

I'm not a horny gamer, but are there any games where the sex itself is the gameplay and not just the theme or a cutscene reward? And not point and clicking the genitals or faster/slower buttons, but something more than that at least..

        Anonymous

Not him but the ones I've played that try for that are usually not great because the sex mechanics are repetitive, tedious, or get in the way of cooming

        Anonymous

Lost Chapter does that pretty well. Last Evil, which is in the same vein, does both the gameplay sex and cutscene reward routes. I particularly liked Last Evil's means of handling it. If you seduce an enemy during a battle, you're actually banging him, which means he's out of the fight for a few turns. Useful for dealing with other combatants or stacking buffs. If you know a fight is going badly, you can actually surrender, which will subject you to the lose cutscene, but lets you continue the fight with a bondage implement on that confers a debuff of some kind. You can do this up to five times in a run, which can prove challenging, but also can factor into the sex. I'd highly recommend them both, but Lost Chapter won me over on theming and aesthetic, as well as the VA for your character making me fricking diamonds. If you keep giving into sexual desire, your interactions with the random events that involve sex also pivot from being resistant to actively loose. There's also Karryn's Prison, which is still one of the better battlefrick games out there.

Monster Girl Dreams is pretty good, but it might as well be a VN for how much of it is just reading. Got some decently in-depth RPG mechanics and really strong writing for the smut, enough so that I even have a favorite character.

Succubus Connect is yet another card battler (I don't have an addiction, shut up), but that one is actually entirely focused on sex. You unlock cards for things like handjobs, blowjobs, even pitjobs. It's also insanely easy to break the game over your knee in terms of difficulty, and get to the point where you're holding well over a dozen cards at a time.

Kaiju Princess' sex minigame is like half of the content, but it's decently well designed and the girl is really cute if you're into emotionless girls.

HypnoApp is purely about the sex, where you have to balance how you're banging the girl to attune her to various preferences, so you're constantly switching between stimulating different erogenous zones to keep her interested. It's possible to go too far and cause her pain instead, which is an undesirable result. I don't think it's the best of its kind, that honor goes to HypnoLab VR, which somehow came to us from the same guy behind Snow Daze, and it's really high effort for what it is. There's some real effort that goes into unlocking the various modes of hypnosis.

              Anonymous

monster girl dreams is great but that shit is never gonna get finished going by the dev's current pace
also my build basically doesn't work on le super optional boss which was lame

          >There's also Karryn's Prison, which is still one of the better battlefrick games out there.
Shame it's near impossible to trigger blowjobs in that game because for some reason every single enemy is extremely averse to ever using them.

Oh are the card builds in Lost Chapter directly related to whether you make her a bawd or not?

        Anonymous

Yes. You have combat cards for kicking/maneuvering, fisticuffs, magic, defense, money magic(which is like three cards but can ramp up to being the most powerful in the game), and bawd cards. Depending on your starting decisions, you start with different basic cards and stats, and different random encounters and end battle rewards will grant you access to certain bawd cards, as well as your titles, 16 permanent buffs you get through various achievements like raising or lowering your morality and faith stats to different levels, beating the four main bosses, losing your virginity, raising your lewdness to a certain point, things like that. There is...a lot in that game, it's genuinely hard to cover. Let me drop you a link to the f95 thread if you want to give it a whirl.

That sounds kino. I always wanted an hgame to integrate lewd battlefrick mechanics into a card system. Princess Synergy is a NEVER EVER so this'll have to do.

Also, is that TL any good? F95 is way too fricking inundated with MTLs these days for me to trust it.

            Anonymous

It's very well translated from my couple dozen hours with 1.08, and 1.10 apparently has TL fixes. It's not a super clumsy TL, but there were definitely a few spots that were kind of rough, so hopefully those were all fixed. I think the Steam release is getting a more official TL with the most recent release of the game, so I guess we'll see.

    >Testament - Order of the High-Human (because frick high-elves I guess)
First-person hacking'n'casting RPG. Sorta like Dark Messiah, but unfortunately without the kick button and environmental features. It's pretty decent for a 15-man team but it's a bit lacking overall, and melee combat is a bit annoying to get used to because of the stagger mechanic (but I guess you are supposed to swap weapons/spells to deal with annoying encounters, or use stealth archery).

    >One Lonely Outpost
Space Harvest Moon. The premise is interesting: You need to turn a dead rocky region into a living habitat for future colonists. I didn't get very far yet (the game is a bit too slow-paced) but the tutorial shows machines that will help you with the farming tasks (so you can spend more time exploring and hitting on female colonists, I assume).

    >The Devil Within
Metroidvania focused on combat, or so it says on the tin. Honestly I got bored of it before the tutorial ended.

    >Wizard with a Gun
I didn't pay enough attention to the trailer, turns out this is a Don't Starve clone rather than an action game about gun wizards. Surviving'n'craftans isn't really my thing.

    >Dragonspire
The game calls itself an "action roguelike" but the only game mode available right now is an small arena with a timelimit.
Skill cooldowns are too long, enemies have a bit too much HP (I suppose the game is designed for co-op but my partner logged off) and combat wasn't really a smooth experience overall.

the writing is absolutely bizarre. there's clearly some context being hidden where we've entered some alternate reality/simulation based on how the woman is talking about stuff (e.g. "oh, falling doesn't hurt here") and the gramophones are hinting at reality-warping stuff related to the pictures too but its not at all made clear what the premise really is.

still think it's gonna wind up being very breezy, bland stuff in the end but hopefully the full game makes more sense at least and doesn't have it get in the way of the puzzles.

's Run - best game of the fest. Immersive sim with an aeon-flux visual style. I can see this being an old Gankerirgins new obsession (as in, mine.) 5/5
Have you played literally every game in the fest, or even > 1% of them? I doubt it bro.

      [...]

Volcano High - Nobody here even realized there's a demo yet and that's testament to how little it matters compared to snoot game. snoot/10 didn't even play
Its been mentioned in several threads.

Fortune's run is just the best demo I played. I rate them based off of how much I am looking forward to the full release.
        >Steamworld Build - somewhat mediocre city builder but maybe if the mining aspect of the game is really elaborate I could see myself getting into it. 3/5
        >Paleo Pines - I just play this because my neurons activate when I see dinosaurs. Casual farming sims are quickly becoming an oversaturated genre and this one unfortunately isn't anything to write home about. 1/5

Need a batch of demos just to keep my dumb brain entertained for a night. I have:
Viewfinder - Puzzle game that will bore me but the technology is nice
Riot Operator - Because operating against rioters in France seems like a great challenge
Fortune's Run - Imsim, seems cool
Vampire Hunters - Looks fun, an FPS survivor, eh
Stunt Derby - Just to frick with the engine
Home Safety Hotline - VHS horror akin to Untold Stories, might be good
Beyond Sunset - Vibrant for the part of my brain who's still a zoomer
    Rasant - 'cause speed

Logic Town is really fun. I've managed to put in a few hours, actually. The unfortunate thing about a demo for a puzzle game is that a "vertical slice" is pretty much the whole experience. So there's not much incentive to buy the full game on release.

I wasn't liking it at first because it felt like the majority of your 5 minutes is spent gathering, but I figured out what the game wants you to do: make a b-line for important stuff (Gear holding bosses, Chaos Gates) and then use the Chaos DOOM thing to break down rocks and shit for you.
It takes a little planning to pull it off, and if your exit portal isn't in an open place it may not feel comfortable to do, but basically the game expects (once you gather a bunch of shit early on to get going) you to bumrush mini-bosses, then farm Chaos to get Arcane dust and break down things.
You can also use Fire bullets to harvest trees pretty fast, and the ash/charcoal is used to make better fire bullets.

The bones of a good game are there, like it has Guild Wars 2 style "fields" of elemental stuff so like if you set the ground on fire and then hit it with water, you'll create steam.
I'm guessing in co-op you could do fun synergistic stuff with water / cold, water / lightning, oil / fire, maybe the poison debuffs for big monsters.

Complaints: Guns seem shallow, the tech trees are uninspired. Maybe the demo isn't representative of that, who knows, but I'm not sure where the longevity comes from.
When I think of DST (this is basically DST + Risk of Rain), that game is only fun because of the charming graphics, music, and huge variety of bosses.
DST's core combat gameplay sucks shit; melee kiting is awful, gathering up tons of marble to make marble suits or whatever is awful.
Exploring in DST is great, for example The Ruins and other biomes or set pieces or whatever, which is what WWAG is lacking.

It's 100% a wishlist game, and the demo is worth playing (especially with the protip I gave). I'll probably repost this in the next thread since the game seems to have a lot of interest around it, though I feel like I ought to reformat my post to not be a stream of consciousness info dump.

        Anonymous

        >then use the Chaos DOOM thing to break down rocks and shit for you
I tried that, but it seemed like any environment objects broken by chaos (whether mobs or the meteors that spawn when the timer hits 0) are converted into arcana rather than dropping raw materials.

          Anonymous

I didn't play it long enough to figure out if that's happening or like, if like say Pages get turned into Arcana as like a penalty or something, but definitely the Eyeballs will start tearing down walls and metal structures and things.
Basically all I can say is to try again, other enemy (in particular the minibosses and exploding barrel) attacks can also break down walls and things.

Also, I didn't mention it before, but you get a platform gun that uses stone to fill in gaps and that's a significant QoL feature as well.
Oh also upgrade the Tome to be able to scan decorative structures, this lets you break down the huge piles of shit in your Time Hideout and also decorative structures out in the wild.

After playing the Viewfinder demo, I don't think I've gotten anything out of it that I didn't already know from the trailer. It just introduces the basic mechanics and the moment you start to engage beyond that, the demo ends. As a working actor, this is mostly true because anyone with a microphone can be a "voice actor" without any credentials.

There's a correlation between acting budgets and how much you're willing to gatekeep your voice talent auditions and the quality of your talent in the game. That's not to say there isn't GREAT talent out there, but it's harder to find when you have over 200 auditions.

            Anonymous

Depends how much you need. If you only need a few thousand words of dialogue it's pretty cheap, a few hundred maybe. If you need the entire story voice acted, you are in trouble, both because it does cost serious money, but also because it's more difficult to pull off without falling flat. Not to mention you'll never be able to afford localization. Consider having reaction sounds like Zelda games, or even beeps if it's pixel graphics.

But voice acting costs will be dwarfed by your art costs. You get more bang for your buck splurging on art anyways.

Your best bet is to find online VAs yourself (like the kind who make standalone content/skits to post to Youtube and such) and reach out to them directly. Not to say that there aren't terrible examples of those as well, but at least someone who has 500k subscribers from voiceover memes is more likely to have skill than some literal who that puts "aspiring VA" in all their profile bios. Proper equipment, at the very least.
Obviously you'll still need to use your own discretion, but I think you'll be better off than you would with the audition clips you'd get from making "VAs wanted" posts and asking people to send you samples.
It'll be more expensive than literal whos, though.

If you use asset store stuff, it'll look ultra shit.
You need a ton of locations, and they need to be planned out and fun to explore, or else they'll be shit (which most Elder Scrolls dungeons and such still end up being).

Went through roguelike tag (0 of which are roguelikes). So many 'survivor' games. Tried:

Crux: Shooter. Alpha game, mechanics seem fun but it looks and sounds like shit.

Spell Disk Well presented, controls well. Poorly balanced. Very easy to break the game with its auto-cast on X system.

Conquer Humanity: Play this for 10 seconds and you've seen the entire game.

Yokai Art: Plants vs Humans but really bad. Most notable feature is the fact every yokai in the demo's special power is to turn into little girls.

Mortal Vessel: Basic enemy in second area did > 1/3rd of my hp in one hit and took < 10%

    Secret Summoner: Cute but boring.

    Soul Dog: Cute but boring.

Rogue Command: Way too much waiting around, not enough meaningful thinking.

Greedland: Calls automatic mode "for vampire survivor players, casuals", based. Function top down shooter. Kinda boring.

Death Must Die: Effectively a V sav clone but worse. Has Hades god-upgrades, but worse, since they mostly just pad stats.

Folk Hero: Too easy to just hold rmb at range.

Quasimorph: Disappointing. This is more like CDDA v only the lowest level zombies than it is like DoomRL. Dunno why people keep comparing it to that. Everything is either no threat or passes the rng check to bleed-infect you hwen you have no cure and you just die. Text is insanely slow, can't speed up. Not good.

Still need to try Wizard with a gun, Fortune Run, Another Space Opera and a few others, but burnt out on how bad these games are.

  51. 11 months ago

    >Fortune's Run
Fun running and gunning imsim, grungy sci-fi stylish as frick, melee is jank but I kind of expect that with billboard enemies. Voice acting is surprisingly good. I'm pretty sold on it, depending on the price.
    >Back to the Dawn
Slow-burn furry prison lifesim, large cast of characters to interact with, gain skills from, trade with, beat up. Surprising amount of depth so far, but the demo is only 3 days of a 21-day experience. I'm really interested in the final product, not sure it'll hold my attention though. Don't fight the fricking crocodile, he'll kick your ass and steal your money.
    >Quasimorph
Really like the presentation, it has potential, although having recently played Cogmind it feels like a step down in essentially every respect except graphical.

They're goofy and not in an endearing way. And while the sprite work would normally be considered good, when compared to the beautiful environments it makes the character sprites look low quality. I suppose it doesn't help that the environments are highly animated while the sprites have no idle animation and just remain static.
          It's nitpicking though.

I'm a veteran city builder gamer that have been playing these type of games since SimCity, the very first one that was released on the SNES and PC.
Anno 1800 is one of the most boring city builders out there, literally nothing to do, AI is fricking moronic, and all buildings(specially houses) look the same so your city ends up looking like copy pasted garbage.

    Good:
    >This Bed We Made
    >Phoenix Springs
As a lover of point-and-click adventure games, this demo has impressed me the most so far
    >Peaks of Yore
    >Tales from Candleforth
    >Sea of Stars
Combat didn't bother me, I want more takes on Chrono Trigger's seamless battles. The main characters seem uninteresting though

    Okay:
    >Ghostpia
Great presentation for visual novel, but the writing is hard to connect with
    >The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood
    >Luto
    >The Invincible
    >En Garde
    >Ugly
    >Laika: Aged Through Blood
    >A Void Hope

    Bad:
    >Luna Abyss
    >Hot Blood
    >Bad Boro
Might be good if the combat and controls improve
    >Between Horizons
    >Hank: Drowning on Dry Land
Stylish, but the voice acting is bad and it controls like shit
    >El Paso, Elsewhere
Almost the same as above, except far more cringe-inducing
    >Ebenezer and the Invisible World
The combat is awful, but I might've been down to enjoy this as a novelty--if it weren't for the copy-pasted buildings on several screens

Still have a bunch more to try.

    Things I've played:
    >En Garde
Don't get why people on Ganker are loving it. The environmental stuff is nice, but the combat is a barebones BamHam clone.
    >Call Hating
I was expecting a fun "meta"game like There Is No Game, and even though it sort of starts off like that by making you quit and restart a few times, the rest of it is just a narrator talking at you, then a really shitty minigame where you squash bugs.
    >Access Denied
I was expecting it to a "puzzle box" game like The Room or The House of DaVinci, but there's no lateral thinking, and none of the puzzle boxes are interconnected in any way.
    >You Are the Judge
Didn't even make it past the intro because the text was far too fricking slow. Every word was slowly typed, and there was no way to speed it up.
    >The Muller-Powell Principle
A decent, but obviously low budget Half Life clone. Trying to do the physics puzzles of HL2, but never gets past the "stack a box on top of another box to reach a slightly higher platform." That, and everything except the aforementioned boxes are static objects, which is dumb.
    >Little Kitty Big City
I think it's the game we were all hoping Stray would be. Or as some anons more clever than me have put it, "It's Stray but with gameplay."
    >Sniper Killer
Not the game the store page makes you think it is. It is not "N64 Hitman." It's some awful horror game.
    >The Invincible
Looks nice. That's probably where the positives end.
    >Broken Roads
I feel obligated to like it, because it's the closest thing to another Fallout/Atom RPG/Wasteland we're going to get. Especially now that inXile is doing that stupid steampunk bullshit for twats.
    >Escape from Mystwood Mansion
It's an escape room game. If you like them, you've probably already checked this out, if you hate them, this one isn't going to change your mind. Do wish it was in VR, though. That's the one genre that's consistently better than non-VR.

tl;dr I played things. Comment too long, continued on next post, probably.

      Part two:
      >Logic Town
Cute, surprisingly addicting puzzle game. The problem with the demo, though, is that I feel like I've already experienced everything the game has to offer.
      >Viewfinder
Another decent puzzle game. We'll have to see if the premise can carry a whole game.
      >Back to the Dawn
I like the individual elements, but I hate games with a time limit, so that loomed over the entire experience and I ended up not enjoying it.

I thought this one was legitimately great it is an adventure point and click game based on daily frustration. As a working adult this was the funniest thing I have seen in a long time, as in the definition of actual adult humor.

Has steam started just randomly dumping games in this without asking the devs? It'd explain the games that are so early into alpha they shouldn't even be on steam at all, where you have to open them several times before the UI scales right or it reads the right inputs, with either dead or 0 response from dev discussion threads

    Demos I played so far
    >Fortune's Run
Already sold on this one last next fest. Interesting game, the mechanics are a little different since it leans more into imsim than shooter so there's a learning curve.
    >Studio System: Guardian Angel
I am heavily biased towards things that give me the Yume Nikki/.flow/Ib vibes and this has it, so in my opinion this is the second best demo I've played yet even if YMMV if you don't already like that brand of atmospheric schizocore like I do. I love the gimmick of the camera and the character being separate entities.
    >Alien Hominid: Invasion
I'll bet this would be a blast to play with friends, glad it was more fun than expected, though I do still hope we get Alien Hominid HD on steam as well someday, just because of the nostalgia factor and the fact that Castle Crashers is there so why not AHHD?
    >Valley Peaks
I like the idea of a rock climbing platformer and definitely appreciate the cozy vibe but I worry how much meat will be on the bones of this one.
    >Jusant
Another rock climbing platformer, I like this one more than Valley Peaks, get a Team Ico vibe from it. My gaming sixth sense tells me that the final game is going to be short, and I hope I'm wrong.
    >El Paso, Elsewhere Demo
"We have max payne at home" is certainly fun to me (mostly because I'm starved for max payne-like games but the soundtrack would be better without the soundcloud rapper and just letting the instrumentals carry the music.
    >Motordoom
Looks fun but I need to fish out my controller later to play it.
    >Wildmender
I've played this kind of game before. I know the drill. You start out as a nobody and become a gigachad farmer, then you quit when you get bored of farming. This gets bonus points for unique presentation, I guess.

    Demos I plan to play:
    >Laika: Aged Through Blood
    >Hellsweeper VR
    >OVRLRD
    >Mislight
    >GAZZLERS
    >En Garde!
    >Sea of Stars
    >Wizard with a Gun

      System: Guardian Angel
      Based.

I liked this one too by virtue of it being a 3D game instead of the usual 2D. I wish the designs were cuter but as it is I'm personally intrigued.

I actually like the non cute designs, I can get cute designs from anywhere, the "I need to sleep a thousand years" designs are rarer and fit a survival horror setting better.

I played ArcRacer and while the "demo" was only 1.5 tracks, it was still enough for me to identify that it will be a good game. My only current gripe with the short time I had with it was that the pre-race floating camera that shows you the track from different angles has no music.

    >Blockbuster Inc.
It's The Movies, but you don't get to dress up your guys OR make machinima. It's just fricking Gamedev Tycoon but with movie scripts. I wish I could burn this from my memory.

    >Ebeneezer and the Invisible World
Has no right drawing me in like this, it's Hollow Knight but you're Ebeneezer Scrooge and his army of vengeful ghosts out to cane the hell out of a guy who got the same Christmas Carol treatment and came out even worse for it. First boss was doing Judgement Cuts and Helm Splitters like this wasn't a fun christmas story.

    >Ultratoro 2
Not much potential. It's a track-based dodging game like Audiosurf but it's on a series of donut shapes.

    >Lunarlux
Cute sci-fi JRPG with a combat system cannibalized from four different series, it's passable but the plot seems very predictable.

    >Grand Emprise Time Travel Survival
Obviously a tech demo made by some thirdie who's cribbing from ARK and other survival games. Runs like shit but the premise is too stupid to put on the ignore list.

    >Quasimorph
Totally not DoomRL. Oddly, more complex equipment & health systems make it feel less tactical and engaging. Skip unless it gets some balancing.

I'll be honest, I much prefer their work on Proton and Vulkan right now over getting Half Life 3 or a Team Fortress 2 update. While I have a strong investment in both franchises, what they're doing in that sector is going to give me a whole new PLATFORM of gaming, rather than just one or two games.

Valve hasn't really been a "game developer" in a very long time. Though I'm sure you're right that people like TF2 fans might be upset with the lack of content and care still-active Valve games are getting nowadays.

Right from the first minute you can tell they were just phoning it in. A news report about the asteroid is about the driest and laziest way to dump a central plot point on the player. It's something the characters are going to be talking about the entire game anyway. There's no point in exposition dumping about it at the start. They could have easily just have started the demo at the car ride the morning after and people would still get what the game is about.

          >I hate when the animation obviously has a lot of effort
I saw clips of it at not-E3 and the weird thing is that the animation looks good, but the lipflap animation for the talking looked like garbage. Like it was animated at 2 FPS and not even synced with the dialogue at all.

          Anonymous

The animation has the most effort put into it compared to everything else into the game, but it's still not what I would call good. They're janky and robotic, and they do the thing amateur actors do where they raise their hands constantly to emote. It's also awful how there's little to no continuity between shots. Trish might raise her hand to gesture and then the camera will abruptly zoom out and her hands are in her jacket. The lip sync also often goes haywire.

I played hack and slashes, soulslikes, and other real time RPGs - basically as many as i could find in the "topdown or 3D games with melee and ranged combat, stamina bar and dodge mechanic" category.

    >En Garde!
8.5/10, fun rapier combat that's a mix of Sekiro and Bamham plus Dark Messiah kick mechanics. Fun, corny, cute setting inspired by 1930s-1950s swashbuckler films. Will probably buy when it comes out.
    >Into the Necrovale
    8/10
Good roguelike with alright pixel art. Combat is pretty smooth and you can make interesting builds around different elements etc. Your ability to make a build is very RNG dependent, I guess that's the nature of rogue games and part of why I tend to avoid the genre. This one has a lot of content. It's made well. Will buy on release.
    >Death Must Die
    7/10
Improves vampire survivors formula by adding timed dodge and aiming mechanics. I liked this for the cool artstyle, which is clearly inspired by Diablo 1, and the smooth feeling gameplay with interesting powerups. Making the protagonist a zoomer egirl was moronic. Needs more story and location variety. Game seems early. Looks similar to, but better than Necrovale, but Necrovale is the better game.
    >Three Kingdoms: Zhao Yun
    7/10
Not for everyone, but I am a sucker for old school Dynasty Warriors. This one is pretty janky, bogstandard chink musou but I enjoyed the top down perspective, horseback riding, and super powerful combos.
    >Judero
    8.5/10
Incredibly soulful. Handmade vidya art in the tradition of Northern Journey, this one is inspired by the mythology of the Scottish Borders I believe. Pretty janky basic topdown unity game with beautiful hand-animated art that's reminiscent of Hylics. The possession mechanic is neat. I believe this game was made by an artist duo who also made the music. Will definitely buy on release, though not for the gameplay.
    >Folk Hero
    4.5/10
I can tell this is early. Kinda soulful setting, but I am getting sick of this style of pixel art. Maps mostly empty.

As a former linuxgay (Manjaro XFCE obviously) I understand how you feel, but we make up 1.5% of the Steam userbase.
Most devs, especially indie devs, can barely get their game to compile on Windows let alone do the extra steps necessary for their game to run on Linux.

        >linux is the better operating system, every devs should know linux, linux should come first
Yet, objectively that's true, but Microsoft managed to dominate the home PC space.

Say what you will about the quality of the games but these demo events are always the comfiest time of the year. Reminds me of popping in a CD full of game demos into the family computer 20 years ago, not knowing what awaits you. And these threads are the rare times Ganker actually fricking talks honestly about video games for once.

I was skeptical at first but I am glad these are a regular thing now. Threads are just a great time all around.

Agree; feels like when you'd get those demos from PC Gamer.
They were such garbage, but they were FREE (nevermind my child brain couldn't understand that the magazine cost $20 USD in 1995 or whatever) and it felt like being on the cutting edge of something new.
It's a nice feeling, makes me wish everything could be like this where we just do and create what we want because all our other basic needs are met. Obviously that will never happen but these demos are what it would probably feel like to live in Star Trek or something where you just pull up whatever you want and share it with friends.

Viewfinder's quippy narrator was cringy, but I'm surprised they only lasted for the first or second map. I was thinking it'd be in every level.
Or did it used to be and they updated the demo after poor feedback?

Also, writing aside, it's weird that the voice apparently isn't the player's, because the audio sounds like it's coming from you. If it's supposed to be a communicator or something, the sound design doesn't convey that at all.

Yeah, for what appeared to be the intro of the game, they didn't actually introduce shit. Like why you can rewind time inexplicably, or like you said, who the narrator is, since it's clearly not you.

If you want more of Hammerfall then yeah, but it's a bit like playing Gauntlet on NES or something.

      >Multi-player character
I don't exactly remember how this works but like it's easy to load a cheat map and level yourself up or whatever I think?
Also, at least what I recall from memory, is multiplayer stuff tends to be kind of campaign-ish in that you make a character for that campaign?
Pretty sure it's not like an issue at all basically?

Other anons have touched on a lot of the bigger titles so far that look promising (EnGarde, Sea of Stars, Little Kitty Big City, One Lonely Outpost, The Invincible, Eternights etc.) here are a few I haven't seen come up yet much
    >Hammerwatch 2 - https://store.steampowered.com/app/1538970/Hammerwatch_II/
If you were a fan of the Hammerwatch / Heroes of Hammerwatch series of pixel medieval co-op adventures (roguelike elements included in Heroes) this looks promising. Reminds me of a much deeper take on Gauntlet.

    >Jumplight Odyssey - https://store.steampowered.com/app/1893820/Jumplight_Odyssey/
Spaceship management sim with an aesthetic inspired by 70s anime, so if you ever wanted to captain Space Battleship Yamato, this may be your game! You have to manage crew, officers etc.. to repel boarders, engage in combat, but also just expand and make sure everyone is happy; you actually build and zone different rooms and the ship has multiple decks.

    >Janosik 2 - https://store.steampowered.com/app/1640400/Janosik_2/
Janosik is a figure of Polish/Slovakian/Slovenian legend as sort of a robin hood figure and the original Janosik was a free action metroidvania where you freed some of your band of highwaymen and then ultimately your woman, all imprisoned in a jerk noble's castle; this is the sequel to it but with a lot more of everything including multiple playable characters apparently. For obscure eurojank its done quite well and the movement and combat is smooth and responsive

    >Defender's Quest 2: Mists of Ruin - https://store.steampowered.com/app/252190/Defenders_Quest_2_Mists_of_Ruin/
The original Defender's Quest is a great hybrid of RPG and tower defense; each of your characters act as towers, can be upgraded, given gear and skills etc. The new one has a new setting with almost pirate/steampunk-ish elements vs the more standard fantasy of the original, and deepens game systems; if you like 2D tower defense this looks quite promising.

Yeah, it really is. The original is still fun after all this time and so is Heroes (which has a bit more variety given its more roguelike nature, unlockables etc); both were also early Linux native games back when it wasn't so common. Hammerwatch 2 is shaping up nicely.

    >Echo Point Nova
easily the most fun and ambitious game i've played of the festival

double jumps, exp/skill tree, customization, destructible terrain, bullet time, grappling hook, spawnable jump pads (which is basically like quad jumping?), a tribes-like hoverboard with wall grinding

all this freedom comes at a cost however, and it's pretty buggy (the tip of my gun is a permanent vortex and earlier i had a glitch where i could jump infinitely)

no clue what the theme or plans for level design are but there is a ton of potential here

I don't get what people see in En Garde. I played on hard and had zero desire to continue playing after the demo ended. Even tried the arena mode to see if it was any better, but it wasn't. It takes obvious inspirations from Sekiro, Bamham and Dark Messiah but they're all better at what they do than this is.

I don't think it's better than any of those games but I think it's a decent enough blend of their elements to be fun in its own way. If I was looking for games as good or better than Sekiro or Dark Messiah every Next Fest, then I would constantly be walking away with zero demos wishlisted.

I kinda feel like that. It's got a very polished presentation and the idea of swasbuckling through the environment sounds fun, but at the end of the day it's a glorified color-coded Batman combat game with apparently nothing else but combat. I'm not sure I want to play that for 5-10 hours.

I can't fathom how KVLT has such a stellar presentation (trailer, key art) when the game is utter fricking shit. It looks like a Unreal template with texture swap. >Viewfinder
First trailers of this game made it clear the two big danger spots were a failing of engine, or a failing of level design. The demo proves the engine works! But it falls for the #1 puzzle demo trap of only showing you the easy levels so you have no clue if it'll get good (even if the gimmick pictures were cool).
Borrowing Forspoken's main character was an odd choice though.
    >Into the Necrovale
It's pretty fun. Early build screenshots make it obvious the dev slapped on a CRT filter to disguise the flaws in the graphics, but I'll be damned if it didn't work.
    >Pâquerette Down the Bunburrows

In your image, En Garde has a charming tone and you can feel the depth/skill in the combat once you get past the tutorial portion of it, but it's going to take tweaking in the graphical settings and the MC's model isn't as cute as the key art. As for stuff unmentioned, I enjoyed Alien Hominid Invasion, Resistance 204X, & TAGLINE for the most part and found something enjoyable in FINAL KNIGHT & Pull Stay despite them being jank. Motordoom is also a neat idea but unless you thought "Rollerdrome is cool but you should be able to wipe out like in THPS and have roguelite elements" then Rollerdrome is much better. Gonna play more demos after I wageslave (Battle Shapers, Legendary Hoplite, Merchant of the Six Kingdoms, M&M Clash of Heroes, etc.), I'm hopeful for them though.

        Anonymous

        >you can feel the depth/skill in the combat
I don't think there's any depth there. You can just mash parry the second the white indicator thingy pops up and you'll get it every time. Dev should add a perfect parry mechanic where you need to press the button JUST before small white circle disappears, or else you'll suffer chip damage. It would improve the overall gamefeel a lot. As it is now, it's pretty braindead, and honestly dumber than Bamham on Hard because those games have no parry indicators on Harder difficulties.
        >but there's unblockables
Yeah and you can just Dark Souls roll out of all of them, which lets you retreat to safety effortlessly. You don't even need to jump like in Sekiro. Throwing/kicking shit is also absurdly broken and stuns enemies for way too long.

          Anonymous

There's a perfect parry I thought, it's how you get the !! over their head and a larger guardbreak window. Also I get why people say Bamham but I don't agree, in those games you're actively jumping from enemy to enemy and countering anything around you whereas in this the game outright tells you you'll lose if you have a worse fight than a 1v2 without using things around you. It's much more about mitigating the numbers than each individual enemy's threat level, and I like that there's a lot of options for it instead of the devs implementing kicking boxes and calling it a day. I will say it's very "snappy" though, where if you kick a scared or guardbroken enemy within 20 feet of a weapon rack they'll magnetize to it, or if you throw fire it'll change direction in midair to light the cannon fuse.

            Anonymous

            >Also I get why people say Bamham but I don't agree
Idk I've played all the Bamham games and I agree with those people. Parrying is very simple, the dodge roll is extremely good, there's only a single attack button, there's a special move you need resources for which nullifies any enemy's defense and you lock onto whichever enemy you attack towards. Latest Bamham game also had items you could pick up and throw.

Maybe I'm recalling the Asylum combat more than Knight since Asylum was my favorite overall. Both combat systems are simple but the core difference to me was that in BamHam you just keep attacking until a prompt appears and you mostly focus down an enemy until they die before moving onto the next. En Garde wants you to engage but you need to be reserved since the parry is coming and moves you need to dodge are too. The roll also totally disengages you while the side step done with a more deliberate single press has that thrust followup. There's enough there that I think it can hold its own while Arkham always needed the stealth and detective gameplay to round itself out.

En Garde is the best in your post, Laika is the best not in it.

I hope Viewfinder will have a good set of levels, the demo was really fun.

Same. The demo ended right as it was starting to get interesting. It's a great idea but will only be good if the puzzles are up to snuff.

This was fun, remided me of comfy action/platformers from 2000s, they don't make them like this anymore.

I find that games of that vibe are becoming more common in the past few years. Not all of them are excellent but they weren't back then either. But yeah, this one is very much a "launch window PS2 game that's also on PC" feeling.

Killer7 has a sex orgy with Yume Nikki, Ib and Silent Hill.
      >Alien Hominid: Invasion
fun party game, fun sequel to alien hominid HD
      >Jusant
      rock climbing game, cozy, meditative
      >Fortune's Run
I don't even know how to describe this game other than "detailed, immersive, reminiscent of good 2000s era games"
      >Wildmender
You've played this kind of game before. Start as a survivor, end as a thriver.

I'll check out the rock climbing game cause that sounds pretty interesting. I'm already sure that alien hominid will turn out good so no need to play a demo for that one.

I was looking forward to El Paso, Elsewhere but the demo was kinda disappointing. Is it just me? My main gripe is the enemies are barely a threat. In Max Payne enemies either charge at you or shoot, they're fast, and could kill you really fast. In El Paso they're pretty slow and easy to deal with and dive is kinda redindant since most enemies are melee.

In Max Payne the enemy placement made every shootout into a puzzle - it was almost impossible to get through the later levels without thinking carefully about how to approach each fight, because if you dived around without choosing your moment and your position right you'd get killed.

El Paso devs clearly love Max Payne but they don't seem to have taken that lesson on board - diving isn't super useful against melee attackers and the enemy placement is what I'd expect from a hack-and-slash rather than a shooter. It didn't hold my attention for long.

I think I might have found that game an anon mentioned that literally has no files at all and an empty local install folder. Shit's called WildArea and it's some moonrune shit.

Not sure if you're referring to some other post, but the one mentioned before was that Quest Master game which happened because the devs didn't have a proper Linux version but had an empty download for it anyway.

echo nova point was pretty fun but feels a bit odd to fly around with grapple and hoverboard but using standard smg, shotgun, assault rifle sniper... a game like this should have a bit more exotic arsenal.
