I've never beaten a shmup, which one of these should i go for first? I usually prefer vertical screen over horizontal

        Anonymous

gate of thunder on that list.
the best ones to start are the nes gradius, steel empire (the most recommended one, it even gives you a life bar and has an aesthetic which has been hardly used on any shooter) and blazing lasers, gate of thunder is harder than the games i recommended and won't make you learn a lot to be good like the ones i'm talking.

Tiger-Heli arcade is still the best shmup for learning the genre

            Anonymous

tiger heli is good too, sorry for not adding it.
just one tip for you new anon, the bombs there are used offensively rather than defensively like in most shooters, that's it tho

              Anonymous

i should have picked it up as well.
personally for the weirdness that is tiger heli in comparison to most shooters and the fact i haven't played it made me not choose it as a recommendation.

        Anonymous

Yes, definitely. You won't be able to appreciate the references and some of the nuances, but it's got great presentation regardless and on the gameplay side it's super approachable.

          Anonymous

What would be a good jumping point after Zeroranger for someone who's new. The difficulty is just right and the bullet density isn't excessive, and I want more games like that.

      >”good shmups for beginners”
      >recommends a Raizing shmup, the first Donpachi, euroshmup junk (Jamestown), one of the fastest bullet speed Cave shmups (Dangun Feveron), and fricking Sine Mora
      >says to ignore Touhou

Dude, I don’t know what the frick you’re smoking, but you most definitely don’t play shmups.

For people genuinely interested in the genre, definitely play Touhou (Imperishable Night is easy and a great beginner game), Deathsmiles (one of Cave’s easier games), and Crimzon Clover on novice (relatively easy to 1CC after several attempts). I’d also recommend either Sin and Punishment game and the original Panzer Dragoon if you’re interested in rail shooters, both fairly forgiving for newcomers with generous checkpoints. Honestly, you could just play anything by Cave on novice and have a good time, and you’d be playing the cream of the crop.

Whatever you do, avoid anything made in a European country, anything with a shop where you buy upgrades, and especially avoid Sine Mora - which is Japan’s take on the euroshmup and it’s godawful.

This sale is a bit pointless since all the best shmups are best emulated (or played on original PCB), and modern """shmups""" are just zero effort troonhou clone asset flip garbage.

So it makes sense that it's just a bunch of twin-sticks, sidescrollers, and roguelikes Not really what you'd consider shmups but anyone interested in the genre is already emulating arcade and console shmups.

Kinda fricked up to not actually include any shmups in this sale

Was a 50% chance I was going to release it for free anyway, 50% chance I released it for a buck. Had co-op too.

don't worry anon, just release your game when you finished and put a 10% launch offer and do a summer sale,, just fix the inertia and add more enemies, you will have to redesign some patterns but it will be really fun and can be done on 2 months, i will buy it at full price personally and i can donate on a patreon.

Probably can be fixed up quickly, I learned a lot since I put it on pause, thanks anon, maybe when Im done with my current project I'll go ahead on it again.
