Nobody ever complains about Ghosts&Goblins or Castlevania being too easy with their infinite continues. Abadox is also pretty tough but then again starting at stage 3 onward on a continue without any powerups is harder than just starting over again

Man, when I see the word shmup I only think of the Touhous, Gradius games, Mushihime Sama and similar games. Has the meaning changed so much? Almost all the games in the sale aren't shmups to me.
The meaning didn't really change, it was more like we ended up giving it away because storefronts like Steam support tagging but don't support de-tagging, for example. So you have tons of these top down literal no input (aside from movement) required games, like Vampire Survivors and the billions of clones that it spawned, being tagged as bullet hells (because it does feature many bullets) or shoot em ups (because you do fire at enemies), and there's nothing you can do. And the issue is further compounded by the fact that Valve became really lazy with sales years ago, but tagging and the store revamp made them even lazier, so instead of actually having to compile lists of featured games for the sales they just give you a list of all games that were tagged as bullet hells or shoot em ups or STGs. And it sorts by popularity by default at that. So you get Vampire Survivors: The Sale with a side of shit no one in their right mind aside from people with learning difficulties would call shmups.
Sure, if the kind of 'arcade shmup' you and your disabled friends tend to play requires no actual input to fire, fricking moron. Start sucking the cum out of my wiener right now.
