Even if Switch 2 got released tomorrow, Switch 1 would still be great as an emulation and indie machine for at LEAST a couple more years. If you're interested in its exclusives on top of that, it's a no-brainer. Just make sure you find one you can hack.

Fallout 4 is okay if you enjoy the camp raising part or just exploring and shooting. An an RPG you tend to just be presented 4 choices that do the same thing which makes it boring and its core cast is actively unlikeable.
It does have some fun lewd 'collect slave' mods, like Skyrim, but far more stable, which you can have fun with making your own little hobo den. Probably overall the best part. Other mods tend to be very underwhelming, mostly stat shuffling or 'shit you could already do, but now you can do it in more steps'
Code Vein is boring. They gave the enemies super-armor like its still a Monhun clone even though they're small humanoid things and very little counter measures to it, which makes the combat incredibly unsatisfying. The game is basically nothing but combat.

the main plot/story fell off around a quarter of it's way- it is horribly unfinished. If you play like it's a GTA, open-world sandbox type of game and listlessly wander around the engine- it can be fun. I enjoyed it primarily for the environment, art style, some of the typical storytelling Fallout lore. The plot was the massive disappointment. I played it, expecting something more and disappointingly realized that was all there ever was.

Yes and no. As a monster capture game it is different from normal. Price wise it's better than a lot of other ones, mechanically it is not as fricked over by the devs like Temtem is.
Otherwise since it only recently came out you might want to look at other games. Unfortunately the better ones on PC are Nexomon and Disc Creatures.
Coromon is a grindfest, the Digimon games vary, Persona and SMT also vary, Ni No Kuni's somewhat fricked when it comes to combat, World of Final Fantasy is bullshit.
I have no idea how Monster Rancher, Monster Hunter Stories, or Monster Crown are.

disillusion is weird, its barely a game but kind of interesting? just because you make your game in rpgmaker doesnt mean you HAVE to add a barebones jrpg combat system (lookin at YOU hylics 1!)
this game also has some kind of shilled connection to agora road which is some lame vaporwave forum that used to advertise here and on reddit full of /misc/Black folk and /x/ unironic schizos talking about how everyone but them is an NPC while completely lacking any sort of self-awareness

that sounds interesting, though I agree with the barebones mechanics part. Some of these games would benefit by not having those. But the premise and visuals look interesting enough for me to give it a shot.

Nice. Now you won't have to look at any Steam sale for the next 4 years, even though you will keep buying more every sale.

What happens to this list when Baldur's Gate 3, Armored Core and Starfield come out?

the last new release I played while it came out was elden ring. I prioritize my backlog over new stuff so I think I'll be able to get through these in a reasonable amount of time without getting sidetracked by newer games.

Already finished Hylics, Chosen 2 and The room 4. Going through Rabi-Ribi and Hypnospace now.
And frick me, I feel like getting skyrim (I have never played it) and the Rabi-Ribi dlcs, the game is much fun than I expected. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

You have a bit of everything, very nice list. Enjoy

This might be too much to ask, even the smallest reccomendation is welcome. My lack of written expression forced me to do this thing to explain myself better. I want games that fit the feeling of each of the rows here (horizontal, x axis, left to right).
      >Mistery games where you get agency in "solving the case" before the devs do it for you. (Detective optional).
      >Time management games that rely on time slots to change the game state and for you to make progress on an specific thing.
      >Wild card. Games that subvert expectations and make you go "OK this has to be the peak of the game, no way for it to WAIT YOU CAN DO THAT" every 10 minutes.
      >Urban themed kino with important choices, roleplaying, and at least some replayability, not necessarily an immersive sim. No medieval fantasy setting preferably.
      >Atmospheric grim games where the human spirit is put at stake to fair against the odds, forcing you to do some horrible things, in a world that doesnt even wants you dead, it just doesn't care.
Anything is appreciated, even games that left you with mixed impressions.

If you liked Hypnospace, try Broken Reality.
The Yomawari games if you like youkai and japanese urban vibes.
Maybe Antichamber if you feel like playing puzzles.
      The room series too.

Forgot to say, games that caught my attention in case you think I shouldnt buy.

Beat multiple times, unlocked all classes, its very mediocre. Not really many build options and those that exist are very imbalanced. I got it cheap in a bundle and as such it was an okay novelty, wouldn't rec paying what its asking on its own.
Being able to move on a field doesn't add enough to justify it having less options overall than a single class in StS.

Probably. Its the second best made chinese game I own, but it has issues. However, those issues may be appealing to you, depending on what you want.
The actual core gameplay is very fast-paced and fun. The weapons and girls feel decently varied, although itemization scews very heavily to the stat padding side, less to the 'do cool thing' side. Its mostly very fairly balanced outside of like 3 bosses and the intentionally unfair bonus areas.
Progression is fun 'till a point, which is when you max your characters kill tree, then get presented with this:
        https://devilslayerraksasi.fandom.com/wiki/Soul_Idol
This is, essentially, a gacha you have to beat the game to get rolls in. Under limitations AND not spending shit to get a decent number of them. Its not a super easy and more importantly not a short game.
This is my main issue with the game. Its just not fun to progress via this tedious rng mess of a system and to see 0 progress if I don't reach the final boss or penalized progress if I don't play gimped and poor.
But if you just want a lot of time for your $, this could be a good thing. Or you just like this kind of system. Up to you.
I'd say its an 8/10 game until you have to deal with soul charms.

            Eh

I bought Super Alloy Ranger on a whim and it pretty decent IMO. Imagine Mega Man Zero but much easier. Its controls are good and the graphics are nice.

Is the DLC worth getting? I have the game already

            Anonymous

No imo. I'd say its strictly inferior to the base game. The DLC edgy versions of the girls can't use any weapons but what they spawn with, making it both absurdly repetitive and absurdly imbalanced, as there's nothing you can do to fix the fact Ralciel is absoltue garbage in that DLC and half the others walk over the game (peak being the one who gets permanent life-steal, just for free, for no apparent reason).
The progression is even worse since not only are their soul-dolls reset despite being the same character, they can't use the normal system for adding mutations to a run. They can only choose 'give me 1 mutation', 'give me 3', etc, then the game picks for you
You're liable to play it 1 time with each girl and then have 0 reason to ever return to any of them ebcause they're simply less fun to play

            Anonymous

Cinematic RPG is literally the descriptor of the genre encompassing witcher, kotor, mass effect, dragon age, etc. Basically all these low engagement nwn modules turned into big budget cinematic titles are "cinematic rpgs" insofar as they place production values far above actual RPG gameplay and play nothing like RPGs.

              Anonymous

I've never once seen that as a descriptor but I'll take your word for it. It's more text with animated models than "cinematic though". Confusing word choice. Though with the exception of ME3 and all the Dragon Age series except origins, those are good games you just listed.

                >a narrow definition of what RPGs are.
wizardry and skyrim should not be lumped together. a genre is not an accurate descriptor if this is possible.

                Anonymous

It's an umbrella term. RPGs have wildly different genres within. JRPGs, ARPGs, CRPGs, Strategy Rpgs. None of them should really be compared.

                Anonymous

                >It's an umbrella term.
No, it's a marketing term that got way out of hand. If I like wizardry I will find absolutely nothing I like about that game in skyrim. Leveling up does not make a game an RPG, any game can have that. GTAV has stats which can be leveled, a customizable character with customizable equipment, choices which effect the story and world, and multiple endings. Is GTAV an RPG? I would posit that none of the qualities which currently represent RPGs are actually descriptive of RPGs and completely meaningless.

I always like to use GTA SA as an example of how trying to describe and categorize genres is hard and you really have to go by feel because on paper, in GTA SA:

                >you can recruit homies
                >there are tons of territories to conquer
                >enemy gangs will attack and conquer your territories if you do not defend them
                >your minions will fight alongside you while you attempt to take over other gang's territories

So, can GTA:SA not, technically, be described as an RTS, or a strategy game?

                Anonymous

                >you really have to go by feel
You really don't though, gta, skyrim, and witcher 3 are all clearly open world action adventure games which prioritize those elements above all else. The RPG tag in this case just means "bad game but it's okay because loot has stats".

GTA, Skyrim and Witcher 3 have fricking nothing in common other than being open world, though. Like I said, by your logic GTA has just as much in common with Total War or Age of Empires.

You're description of RPGs is set to a very specific time period and only to the west. At that time out East they were calling Dragon Quest and FF games RPGs. Those games have nothing in common with them either.

                >Regardless of how true your statement is, they were still regarded as "RPGs". Meaning your definition has always been subjective
My statement is 100% true and this would indicate my definition is objective. Most JRPGs are just really bad RPGs, they can't really be anything else. Some JRPGs wind up being really good, but increasingly rarely as time continues.

I agree with your stance on JRPGs as well but it still doesn't make your definition right. Opinions of quality isn't what's in question here.

Anything is appreciated, even games that left you with mixed impressions.

lacuna was boring. The case of the golden idol was pretty good but short (4 to 6 hours).
Pentiment was an amazing experience for me, it's pretty niche but def a game you either really love or drop instantly.

It seems like every single Detective centered game is doomed to being either boring or badly written. How is the genre so elusive to the media I thought the genre would be thriving the most?
But TCOTGI and Pentiment are games that really appeal to me, might ge those two

            Anonymous

i have the exact same experience; a lot of narrative side scrollers were such a slog for me to plat through i started to think the genre just wasn't my thing. Lacuna was bland, backbone was badly written (mostly 2nd act and onwards), blacksad i had high hopes for, also bland. tales of the neon sea was not too bad, but nothing astonishing.

if you liked pathologic HD so much you can at least try their follow-up with The Void. It's got time management, definitely a wild card game, and is atmospherically even more brutal than pathologic. The setting is way more abstract and doesn't make as great an elevator pitch as pathologic though.

I bought It this sale but ahve yet to play it when work vacations start next week, looking forward to it.

I'm a fan of virtually every game on this list (haven't played Her Story or Shadows over Loathing), and if I were to add one I loved Signalis. Mostly it'd fit in the last row.

Based taste, her story isn't much of a game, as it prompts you to choose when you think you solved the mistery and ends there, neat experience overall. West of Loathing and Shadows Over Loathing are two of the 5 games that do humor right, makes me look forward to what my choices will affect and what dialogues im going to read, SOL has decent turn based combat as well.
I have heard a lot of things about signalis, and its up there on my list, but I think I will wait until winter sale, still very interesting.

        >Return of the Obra Dinn
        >Her Story
Check out The Curse of the Golden Idol, Keyword: A Spider's Thread, or The Painscreek Killings.

Golden Idol gets recommended every thread to other anons with similar tastes as well, totally getting that one.

Oh, duh. And Shadows of Doubt. It's in Early Access but is basically feature complete.

Ive been following shadows of doubt for a quite a while, but then it released in a very unoptimized state for me, so im going to get until it gets out of early access, but seems like a game made for me specifically.

Just chiming in, but I bought that when it was released and it ran like absolute shit the moment I stepped outside or in NPC populated areas. I have an i9 and a 3080 so I have no clue what the issue is but had to refund it.

While I think Chrono Trigger is really overrated its an excellent babies first jrpg.
The newest dragon quest is a safe bet too.
Tales of Vesperias a solid quintessential JRPG

If you want to go back to older games then Grandia and Suikoden 2. More Grandia than Suikoden because while I think Suikodens better Grandias a better first JRPG.
Personas not a bad JRPG for a first one so long as you understand its LONG as shit going into it.
If you like crafting the first Ryzas a good entry.

AAA: FF9, emulate anything before 7. NIS games but you can emulate them. Octopath (2>1). Persona/SMT series. Chrono Trigger is better emulated. Romancing SaGa 3 (emulation or pc is fine).

No its purely cosmetic and allows you to have more cosmetic options on your profile. I like creating theme'd profiles with steam points and also uploading artwork to mix with it. Its pretty autistic but I enjoy it. I have a Aizen, a Bejita, Revolver Ocelot, Big Boss, and a Neo steam profile preset.

Pirate Yakuza 0 before you get the collection.
All the yakuza games are filled with a bunch of minigames and side content that can get very tedious to 100%
Also try sleeping dogs if you want something a little more fast paced than the yakuza games.
                Nier replicant is fricking awesome.

I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on the Yakuza bundle. I've only played 0 so far but I really enjoyed it. Is the bundle always this price or is it actually part of the sale?

                If you enjoyed 0, sure.
But also they are all up on gog if you want them for free.

                How is it?

Scarlet is okay. Not amazing. Fun in its on way but kinda fricky and weird. I got the game in a bundle so it was worth that way.
The dlc is better off getting the one "ultimate season pass" but it never goes lower than $20 so $25 for "Scarlet Ultimate" is actually pretty good.

If I could only choose one, which one?

Toss out Code Vein and Crash Bandicoot. If you get Scarlet Nexus, get the "Ultimate" version since it is $10 for all the extra content dlc.
Otherwise I'd suggest getting something else.

      Anonymous

They are unfortunately a lot of reading, practically half vn. If you're gonna just get one, estival versus has the largest cast of characters. The gameplay parts are basically a musou.

        Anonymous

Thanks for the answer friend, that's the one I was eyeing actually. I've seen gameplay videos of that and to my surprise, the combat looks like it has some weight to it.

none of them have good gameplay

        Which ones have you played?

      Anonymous

      They told you wrong.
Burst re:Newal and Shinovi Versus are excellent gameplay-wise; easily some of the best action games released during the PS4 era and very underrated games due to the breasts and panties making people believe they're shallow.
Estival Versus is a massive downgrade but still serviceable.

        Anonymous

Thanks for the input m8, I'll look into those as well. I am looking at the store page and I see Haruka is in Shinovi Versus, is she in Burst re:Newal as well? I like Haruka

          Anonymous

          Yes, she's playable on both.
She's basically a summoner like DMC5's V but unlike him she's actually well designed and enjoyable to play.

So it's boring? People say the gameplay loop gets repetitive.

          Anonymous

I mean, it’s a roguelike it’s eventually gonna get repetitive, I was more so annoyed with the items and their effects, if you’ve ever played Let It Die it’s a lot like that, you have to spend some time memorizing what they do so you don’t accidentally light yourself on fire. The game doesn’t tell you anything aside from the cryptic messages either. If you like the sound of that it’ll keep you interested for a while. I think it has a demo or the dev finally finished that free side-game so maybe check that out first if it’s to your taste

            Anonymous

I can't get past the first elevator in the demo that's why I'm asking. I don't mind repetition unless it's tedious or annoying.
I've read that the later levels are really big mazes and you have to find keys while dodging unkillable or endlessly respawning enemies. That sounds kinda annoying rather than fun.

              Anonymous

Yeah I never got that far and that does sound annoying. It’s a LOT of resource management, so I can only imagine going around the level with your limited-use weapons and the hide and seek gameplay. It’s an understandable skip.

Is Dead Cells any good? I normally don't frick with roguelikeshit but this looks like the gameplay might actually be fun. I don't give a shit about incremental value runs if the game itself isn't fun, and if bad rng doom runs are a large factor like Noita I'm not sure if I should bother.

dead cells is pretty good, definitely in the upper tier of roguelites. you can rely on RNG to get really good enchantments and breeze through it but it's very possible to beat the game with anything.

I recommend any game BUT that by the devs. Pyre's the weakest but it's not exactly terrible. Just stupid.
      >Inversion

      >Is 25th Ward worth playing if I haven't yet played the Silver Case?
anon, it's a sequel to a story-heavy game. So you tell me if it's a good idea.
Also, TSC is superior (25th war is good but never reaches TSC's peaks) in every way except the stupid puzzles (feel free to use a walkthrough for them, they're just time wasters).

      b***h it's $20.
      >but ts only 50% off
Including the dlc. As they came out you would've shelled out about $100 for everything in pieces.
While yes it should be lower, $20 is dirt cheap compared to release prices.

That's for the complete collection which comes with 5 games. I only want the main game which is normally $15 and it's not on sale.

          Anonymous

Guess what's not on the store!
          The main game.
So either you'll be paying $5 extra for the spinoffs and standalone character dlc in the game properly, or you'll have to find a key reseller who has the original game. Which might instead be for the full version.

alright i think im done with this sale.
my damage is 13775 ars or 53 usd, all things considered pretty good.

here's my usual argie account tutorial for anyone interested:

    1. go to plati.market and buy a fresh account set to argentina region (cheaper than buying a vpn just for making the account, but if you have one already you can just make it on youur own i think) (https://plati.market/itm/steam-account-kazakhstan-turkey-argentina-india-us/3565651)
    2. buy an argentinian wallet card equilavent to 5 usd to get rid of the limited status on your account (used to be 300 ars when i first made the account but inflation's quirky, was 500 when i last checked) cards are so expensive because steam stopped producing them 2 years ago, so if you dont get one now it'll keep increasing in price.
    3. go to some 3rd party steam item market (i use dmarket because it's the cheapest) buy some tf2 keys and withdraw them to your account and sell them on the community market
    4. buy games
never EVER use any payment methods or you'll get reverted to your real region.
    have fun anons.

      SoP
      6/10
Extremely linear action game where the solution to any puzzle is 'interact with the only thing you can in this room or the one next to it', the story spoils itself in everything except the actual cutscenes (random orbs, loading screens both say more) and combat is absolutely braindead as I just sort of run right at the enemies, mash X until they die or stop being hitstunned, at which point I press Y instead and they get hitstunned. Weapons largely feel identical because they all have the same combo routes and all that really matters is 'can I get my Y out before they hit me' or 'does this give more mp than it uses with Samurai'
I'm genuinely impressed with how bad this game is.

      Bladed Fury: 4/10
Very small movepool, very simple mechanics, kind of lost me when it introduced enemies whos attacks can't be parried who spam the screen with aoe projectiles but its so easy it barely mattered

I also got Spark but that game was too shit to even finish.

ai the somnium files : 4/10, had its moments but the story was moronic and the humor was obnoxious and unfunny and repetitive

death's gambit afterlife : 5/10, very generic 2d souls clone

Not sure on Wreck or Rainbow Six 3, but Terraria is good if a bit clunky in terms of the gui.
      Nier Automata is good.

      thoughts?

Slay the Spire has been in bundles.
      So has desperados 3.
Chicory is a color book with an action-adventure setup.
Pony Island is fine, Hex is stupid, never played Inscryption so not sure on it.
What the frick is Northern Journey?
Never played Railbound so no comment.
I might be mixing it up with a similar game but I remember Tunic being clunky as frick. Also it's been in a bundle.
Yakuza dragon... I'd say get 0 first but the series is part of a weird bundle deal instead of being directly on sale. But don't get the dlc if you do get this one.

Asterigos is mediocre; another shitty Souls clone devoid of identity (even when the Greek-like setting is kind of neat).
Stranger of Paradise is a way worse Nioh; basically all the bad parts of Nioh turned up to eleven. Basically a game people recommend due to memes alone.
Those and Soulstice are the only games I advise against; the rest are pretty decent or I haven't played them.

        its not thoughie

helpful thanks however the monogatari replies worry me because I know that anime series is awful so terrible opinion might infect video game recommendations.

Mortal Shell sucks, drop it. Enemies aren't aggresive enough for the core mechanic (taking free hits on a cooldown, essentially) to actually be fun. It just makes it a very easy game.

Soulstice is in a bundle on Fanatical and isn't very good. Its Donte May Cry's color-coding system but worse and even when you hit the enemies with the right color like half the games enemies will often or always simply not take any hitstun anyways. Extremely unsatisfying. Its a shame. Its a cool world with some cool powers, but the combat is just not good.

Drop Senran Kagura. Port of a handheld series and feels like it. Characters have tiny movesets and you can barely enjoy what little they have before it throws you into boss fights which just boil down to repeatedly doing combo>launcher>chase over and over again until they die

Drop Spark, its just bad. In basically every way.

Citadel is in a bundle on fanatical.

Drop Icey. Extremely mediocre combat where the best way to win is to just dump all your cash into maxing one move then spam it ignoring anything else, janky controls with multiple actions tied to one input, tries to do 'le quirky narrtor' and multiple paths ala Stanley but the only path worth seeign is the one where the dev cries about his shit game not selling well because the writing that's not breaking the 4th wall is really fricking bad

Alice is apparently a bad port

Minoria goes in bundles often and its on sale all the time just get it later

Drop SoP, that's just mash X or mash Y: the game, with mediocre combat everything outside of combat feeling legitimately unfinished

        [...]
        >tfw never saw most of these because actually good at games
The one or two I did see felt jarring. Its not a lewd game at all outside of this. Not too sure why they felt the need to make the deaths go so against the rest of the tone

helpful. Many people here hate soulstice and this explanation is convincing, dropped.
Senran Kagura I've decided to drop based on the other conversation itt.

Battlebit is surprisingly decent and may entertain you far more than either of those. Hunt Showdown has soft cheats (graphics changing reshaders) that are heavily abused. Squad is FILLED with the worst type of wannabe military inbreds I have ever witnessed.

If you want to break the dmg limit asap then start with Hikari.
Set aside 100k to buy a ship
Jobs can later be equipped by any party member so don't stress
If you plan to use hired helpers like foreign assassins with Partitio, recruit a npc with a merchant skill that lowers/refunds the cost to use them to save money
Agnea's latent power can apply some important single target buffs, partywide
Throne's latent power can act twice in a single turn
You can make any character good in the late game. What ends up separating them is their unique abilities
