Except the world did not just “go on”, it became materially worse. Abbreviations to text to fit message limits, and then predictive and autocorrective text after that, have absolutely destroyed literacy levels in the West while creating an illusion of competence in communication. How many of you can actually spell correctly without a phone to back you up?

It'll just be a constant flow of generic slop, even worse than now. Never in history has lowering the bar of entry made things better in any field, our current industry decline is actually due to that and this will speed it up.

The way AI is going, websites that provide the training data necessary for image generation will charge either end users or the companies that make the AI software for license fees, to make use of the art they host.
If they start charging users, it may very well end up being cheaper to hire actual artists and writers.
If they start charging companies, these companies could likely go out of business due to the high operating costs.

They already have started charging users. Dall-E went from a free format to charging 15 bucks for a 115 credits. Midjourney has a variety of subscription plans. NovelAI, 10 bucks a month. ChatGPT, 20 bucks a month. I could go on, but I won't. My point is that the subscriptions are already in place and I wouldn't really be surprised if they went up. With that in mind the real bottom line is the companies, as the users will inevitably start pirating this shit like they pirate Photoshop.

While a lot of flash games were and are rad. Oh lord was there an unprecedented ocean of piss never before seen or since.

it is so absolutely going to be worse now
the actual games people make will be completely flooded out, indie titles will be drowning in a pool of AI trash that won't be tagged because AIgays will recognize this and try to dodge getting hit with the 'AI generated tag' death sentence
games will become inevitably worse because you will need far less actual coders/artists/people that do shit, instead of having useless positions everyone will have to fight over easy positions they can't possibly frick up in because the AI is taking up over half of the workflow
it will literally be just as pozzed as it is now except companies will be willing to let it all look more obviously like slop because people WILL buy it
the only people that aren't affected by this are armchair devs that think they'll get to scrape by with their lazy shit letting AI take up the brunt of the work and NEETs that were barely gonna be affected outside of the contentslop they were consuming

My point is that diversity hires shit out requirements and ideological adjustments, which are then developed by very limited amount of competent people, so games are factually not developed by diversity hires, the development is regulated by them. Replacing all the development staff with AI does nothing to this regulation, since manager staff is not going anywhere.

AI spam has been dying in all the threads that were promoting it on Ganker now for the past month, less and less engagement. It's a fly by night, boring technology that creates derivative, poor man's results before it even leaves the creation stage. Experimenting with it as a writer/artist/potential user I found all of the supposed tasks it could ease up for my work to be utter failures. Everything it produced was shit or flawed so intrinsically that the editing process was more involved than original composition would have been. Original content it produced began to repeat itself almost instantly and variety in minor adjustments was impossible. It's a failure of a technology and only shills/morons are promoting it. Anyone that tries to sell anything with it will rapidly find that it loses interest for their "clients" almost immediately as the "tells" become more obvious what it is.

          >the Luddites themselves “were totally fine with machines,” says Kevin Binfield, editor of the 2004 collection Writings of the Luddites. They confined their attacks to manufacturers who used machines in what they called “a fraudulent and deceitful manner” to get around standard labor practices. “They just wanted machines that made high-quality goods,” says Binfield, “and they wanted these machines to be run by workers who had gone through an apprenticeship and got paid decent wages. Those were their only concerns.”

      >made the vast majority of workers richer
      This is inaccurate.
In large part that increased productivity did not translate to increased wealth-to-work ratio for the average worker. In fact on average workers were paid significantly less per hour as a result of the industrial revolution because most of their excess productivity was siphoned off by the business owner.

Interesting fact, until the industrial revolution, the average work day was 4 hours long.
The work day/week has increased in length, with overall increased earnings being a result of doubling the work day to compensate (though even that is failing now, as wages continue to not keep up with inflation).

            Anonymous

Not that anon. But while AI is involved it's not the same type of AI nor the same kind of software.
When I use the fill tool it's predictable. And I can learn exactly how it operates and even the math behind how it operates and it's consistent every time I use the fill tool.

But with the kind of text or image generation we're talking about not even the most experienced so called prompt engineers can fully predict to the tiniest of details how the prompts will turn out and things change every generation. And what's worse, if the models or code underneath the hood changes, then none of all of that prompt knowledge they had learned applies any more.

              Anonymous

The concept is the same Anon. Take a neural network or whatever decision algorithm out there. Hard setting all randomized parameters (seed, noise, etc.) makes the model a deterministic one; give it same input, and every time it generates the exact same output. A model isn't an unpredictable one just because the random parameters are hidden from view.

As jobs become obsolete and automated, the now jobless among them will jump to new career paths and flood those markets with even more replaceable workers, undermining their jobs. You are free to disagree all you want, but the fact remains that not everyone has the time to dedicate to learning to draw, code, program, etc. Neither do they have the resources to pay an artist, programmer and/or other necessary talents to create a video game. With AI, they'll be able to achieve all that and much more.

What you are actually doing, is gatekeeping. Unless you have money, or possess talents X, Y or Z, then you don't deserve to be able to create a video game, right? If you were arguing for the sake of the livelihoods of artists or programmers, I could maybe give it some thought, but your argument as it is falls flat.

        >With AI, they'll be able to achieve all that and much more.
But should they? If they could never find the time or effort needed to learn even a one of the skills needed to make videogames. Why do you think they'd find the time or effort needed to actually come up with good and worthwhile videogames?

You need a decent sized team if you want an AA tier game, doesn't matter how many assets you can generate, the workload is too much. So why wouldn't you just hire an artist and a composer instead so you can get what you want instead of wasting your time prompting?

The left in the US was the same for a long time. Cesar Chavez was a huge opponent of mass immigration because he knew they just made life for workers harder. But then the left became the looney tunes caricature we know today.

Why do Americans speak of liberals as if they're leftist?
The predominant liberal ideology of the modern era is neoliberalism. Which is a distinctly right wing ideology. And that's still liberalism and also the ideology of the republican party. I guess America's supposed right wing party are actually leftists.

No moron, it's not an invention. Leftoid greenshits destroyed the coal industry, which absolutely ruined and impoverished many conservative areas and people. Now you gays want to do the same thing to the oil industry, which is even larger than coal. Like coal, oil predominately employs conservatives and has conservative communities/states relying on it. Then leftoids turn around and give themselves subsidies to prop up their green homosexualry energy sources that produce a fraction as much energy.

I could keep going with more examples but the TLDR is industries run by/benefiting conservatives repeatedly get slandered in the media and fricked over in courts and Congress while industries run by/benefiting liberals repeatedly get sucked off in the media as something the country must adopt and propped up by courts and Congress. I'd love to see Silicon Valley collapse from AI and Pajeets and turn the blue cities built around tech into slums while most of their lefty former employees are financially ruined. Lefties deserve to suffer a bit of this economic devastation they have been inflicting on conservatives for a long time.

AI that advances far enough will eliminate massive amounts of tech jobs, which would destroy tech workers and thus the tax base tech hubs rely on. The tech companies themselves as well as their products likely get better/more profitable instead of going out of business or shrinking to a fraction of their peak size like coal companies.

it will be maligned because AI-generated shit will have devs consistently going "nuh uh it's not AI" and dodging actually showing off anything that would out them as AI-generated hacks so they won't have to have people automatically filtering them by the AI tag, meaning the marketplace will be full of even more trash than usual trying to pretend it's legit that Valve won't do shit about, Greenlight except a thousand times worse

It is also going to get a bunch of unsavory devs permabanned once they get reported for trying to sneak AI past steam which they will all try doing.
Valve knows people don't like AI and knows that without the people being in control to shit on it publicly the corps will slow boil and gaslight us until it is everywhere.
Best to let us fight over it with blood so they know we mean business.

I predict a full scale meltdown once this is live, but it will be coming from the people trying to use AI, not the players.

I think you're giving Valve a little too much credit, they're more concerned with the massive payout from letting hundreds of 'games' to be published a day--100 dollars a game and 30% cut of any profits. They have no concerns in supporting the player OR the dev, just their own wallets, and any bloodshed will be circumstantial to their decisions.
But the meltdown part sounds about right.

Are you moronic? The 100 bucks is refunded when the devs reach the 1000 buck threshold.

The thoudands of AI games getting added is a drop of the bucket for Valve compared to the legal danger these AI sloppas could get Steam into.
The REAL answer here is that AAA devs are pivoting hard into AI as well so Valve is setting the groundwork now.

            >AI tag gets rolled out

            >people see the AI generated games being made are legitimate dogshit and/or having uproar surrounding them and start naturally avoiding them regardless of shilling just like all those fake NFT games
            >devs see the automatic negative reaction to getting branded by the AI iron
            >morons start just not marking their shit and doing everything to avoid getting hit with that "made by AI" mark of shame
            >people start hunting down AI games that are clearly AI shit and raising a stink about them to get Valve to frick them over

For me I think it's more that while yeah, if you're paying close attention you can tell if something is AI generated or not, I don't think it's fair or reasonable to put the burden on the buyer to have to figure it out every time they want to buy art.
Disclosure should be mandatory whenever AI generation is used to sell a product. After all, if someone is commission a piece of artwork from someone, I highly doubt they want a AI generated image they could just make themselves if they're offering to pay someone to draw them something.

              Anonymous

Here's the thing, if AI gets that good, nobody will be commissioning artwork anymore. They might be commissioning someone else to prompt for them, but they won't be paying for art.

It's the same thing as people paying for portraits and the switch to photographs. Now barely anyone has a portrait painting, because you can take a photo in a second.

The only real argument to be made is if training an AI to perfectly imitate someone's style is theft. It certainly feels a little unfair, but nothing stops someone from doing the same thing, there are plenty of artists who draw pretty decent clones. Current copyright law doesn't apply to thought crime.

                Anonymous

                >>Here's the thing, if AI gets that good, nobody will be commissioning artwork anymore.

unlikely, given the point of having someone draw for you is in their own style with extra attention and there will always be pushback against AI because it has hurt a lot of people, no matter how AIshills try to push it
it'll be harder to make a reliable career as an artist in a larger company most likely, but I genuinely think there will always be a market for commissioning art drawn by humans because there can be actual meaning behind it.
Van Gogh has a lesser known series of paintings called Almond Blossoms, which was him experimenting with Japanese style floral paintings he got really interested in. This version of Almond Blossoms was made in celebration of the birth of his nephew, who was named after Vincent. Vincent fully expected Theo to name the kid after their father, but Theo admired and loved his brother so much, he named his son after him despite all the flaws and issues Vincent had.
This painting represents a time when Vincent Van Gogh was at one of his happiest points of his life, when he understood that he was loved and cared for by his family, especially his brother.
AI art can easily replicate this painting, it may even replicate the finer details of each branch and petal on it. But it will always remain a soulless creation, devoid of actual meaning and intention behind it. When someone commissions art, they want someone to put actual meaning and direction behind it.

                >But it will always remain a soulless creation, devoid of actual meaning and intention behind it.
Soul is in the eye of the beholder.

Through nothing more than natural random processes, great wonders have been created that have captivated men for millenia. Nobody made the moon, it's a simple spinning ball of rock, but it's soulful because I see it as soulful.

Without the story, this piece of art looks amateurish and dull. It's obviously the work of someone with little experience, nobody would buy this without the famous name attached. Don't get me wrong, AI right now is utterly soulless and produces nothing but garbage. But it's not that hard to envisage a version 50 years from now that can create interesting works of art in 5 seconds. And when you hit that point, there really isn't much reason to commission a painting from a human anymore, in the same way nobody wears handmade clothes, because a loom can make fabrics far faster, and a sewing machine does a better job than a needle and thread. Will there still be snobs paying for "human" art? Sure, maybe. But it'll be in the same realm as snobs paying for 100 year old bottles of wine, and the prices will naturally increase due to the reduction in demand.

                >because it's expensive
And the same applies to art. Why pay 50 bucks for a commission when a pajeet will PROOMPT it for 5 cents, or you can do it yourself for free?

The drop in demand will cause a rise in prices to compensate. Before machines, clothes spending was like 20% of the family budget, these days it's 2%.

Automation didn't take off cause it started making things better than humans. It just reached a level of acceptable. You've never known quality so have no frame of reference. There's a reason certain industries embrace automation, and others either fail at it or never try. For pigs who just want more muck to roll in AI art will serve a purpose. But for a luxury item someone is gonna spend a lot of their free time obsessing over. Then human made is gonna dominate.

I genuinely don't understand how you think this looks amateurish and dull. How do you not see the detail in the coloring in the flowers? The way Van Gogh added several layers of paint to give it a impression that it can be touched, that it has actual weight behind it? The way the blue sky contrasts with the white and birch coloring, representing life and hope. It doesn't matter if it's a Van Gogh painting, someone else could have made it and you could have still seen the soul put into it.
It really makes me sad that you cannot see or understand it. I hope at some point, you do get to explore more of the world and see beauty beyond surface level aesthetics. You'll probably reply calling me a homosexual or whatever, but maybe in 5-10 years from now, you'll see what I mean. I wish you the best.

I'm not a big Van Gogh fan to begin with. My main problem with this piece is the nearest branch at the bottom. Game art with AI will remain not feasible until AI can consistently draw a character and have their appearance and features warp and change all over the place. Until it can draw ONE (1) never before seen anime girl with a particular set of fine detail features consistently it'll be utterly useless.

Potentially. An indie dev with the right tools could use it to greatly increase the amount of content in their game but for every good game there will be a thousand shitty ones shat out by third worlders. Its already bad enough with the asset flips on steam.
For the average consumer it won't matter and for established or connected devs it won't matter. This just means rich devs will get richer while poor devs, who can't pay tens of thousands for marketing, are left in a cistern of shit.
Most people won't care because the experience on steam for the average user will remain the same but it will utterly destroy any chance an unknown poor dev has at getting noticed.

It will increase the overall supply. Inevitably a lot of shit tier devs who would otherwise have no ability to make games will make games. But it will also enable competent people to do more.

          > Inevitably a lot of shit tier devs who would otherwise have no ability to make games
I know this place is no hugbox but this seems harsh
Making games takes a LOT of time, money, patience, connections, etc
After doing 3d art and some code for some time, I've realized it is NOT a skill issue, but a money issue.
Just making a single game-ready AAA character from 'scratch' takes, Zbrush for sculpting, Maya for modelling, Houdini for effects, Redshift to sell your character with a render, the list goes on. In the pro scene, you do not have one guy do that all. You have your IK rig guy, your modeller, your, your UV map and painter. If you want even more cinematic detail you have your head and face guy, your hand guy, etc etc all to make that cgi you're used to.
This is money. A lot of money.
Anyone could do one thing, but virtually nobody could do it all. Even brilliant minds like Markus Persson made Minecraft by themselves. Great. But no shit Minecraft isn't Call of Duty or Skyrim.
There's a reason games and movies could cost millions.

If AI doesn't brute-force UBI, the doomers were right.

AI is bad as it has no artistic merit. AI worshippers will make the parallel between photography and AI, but if you look at today where do tourists go, to look at art galleries or photography galleries? People have an innate aesthetic taste regardless of whether they are capable of producing art or not, and they will favor works that have artistic merit over those that don't. What can be described as "artistic merit" is the way in which an artist interprets the world through their personal eye, the message their works convey, their design decisions in say how a character or piece of clothing looks, etcetera. AI is incapable of any of that. So go ahead, use AI in your game and watch it be snubbed by 99% of the audience. Sure "you" managed to "make" a "game", but at the end of the day AI is just a tool, a cold soulless tool capable only of regurgitating actual art that actual artists have created, AI will make only content that is even more derivative than what human developers are capable of. AI worshippers are talentless to the core, they cannot create anything artistic so they have to spite those that are able to by promoting this demonic machine. AI worshippers are the Ephialtes of art: spiteful they can never be true artists they have to ruin it for those that are. Invain, might I add, as you can infest the world with all the AI you want but a real artist will never capitulate to it, only the weak minded will.

Lastly, AI tools do not and will never belong to you, but artistic skill no matter how humble cannot be taken away from you. Do you want to depend on some megacorporation for the production of your art assets, or do you want to be able to create them independently? I suggest to go for the latter, as "the more crutches you have, the more it hurts when they're swept from down under you", corporations can pull the plug at any time, Steam is among them, just look at how they pulled the plug on Windows 7. Be a real artist, be independent.

I can't say that Valve is pro-AI here, but it seems like a futureproofing policy for what's inevitable. Games with AI are going to be developed and submitted to Steam. Valve has no way of identifying every game with AI because unlike games with X questionable content where you can clearly see and observe, this is software-related. And software can improve. You can't say "LOOK AT THE HANDS" because eventually the hands will be fixed, and every complaint are just directions for how AI tech should evolve to be distinguishable from human works. The policy just shoves the burden of proof on to the consumers. That's all.

only a tiny fraction of % of 'art' made is museumworthy, a piece to have a conversation about. Made with people with passion on top of talent, and those will stay and be in demand.
but vast majority is already a slop. Made for ads, powerpoint backgrounds, character portraits in games, diaper furry comissions. And those can be replaced with no detriment to anyone but 9to5 'art workers'.
Handmade pottery, anything to do with riding horses, and so on and so forth was once a job for many, and now is only a hobby for those who care. Painting and drawing will soon follow and is that really a bad thing?

game developer here. i only use AI for image laundering. let's say i need to make a poster, a graffiti, or some sort of graphics design for a soda can, or anything similar that has to look a certain way and requires skill and effort to make. ideally i would use an actual photo of the thing to make it, but all the good photos are copyrighted and i don't want to get caught. so i tell the AI to do it instead. usually it does a good job of creating a legal ripoff version of the kind of thing i need, and it comes with the added bonus of doing much of the editing/photoshop work for me since i can tell it exactly what i need. usually i need to edit the image a bit before i can use it, though.
