Yeah I know later nintendo handhelds made them pointless
    such a shame
it's totally not that pokemon fans are moronic and easily fooled into wasting over a thousand dollars just to transfer digital files instead of just starting with brand new characters
something which pretty much every game does

The modern series has managed to achieve a reliance on being able to import Pokémon through previous generations, due to certain moves being exclusive to certain generations (whether that's event distribution, learn pool, tutor pool, TM pool, etc).
Which means the move is legal within its own generation, but inaccessible without directly importing due to some moves not passing down through breeding or mirror herb.

For the GB and GBC Pokémon titles, playing on the original systems really is strictly for the enjoyment of those games.
Unless you're playing the 3DS VC versions, in which case, they too can be imported up to modern Switch games.
If you have a way to recover save data from your GB/GBC carts, you can inject them into 3DS VC titles as a way to move Pokémon from your original game.s

So, yes whilst the modern games can be enjoyed casually and just playing with a strictly in-game team, the transferring of digital files that gets subject to strict legality checks, that level of autism is for the competitive scene and extreme collectors.

Recently they actually stopped this, transferring to Gen 8 or 9 I believe resets your moveset.

I don't like point and click adventure games, but plenty of people do, so there must be something to the genre.
The Frog for Whom the Bell Toll's genre is hard to pin down but it's the same situation.
Maybe it's not for you, but I just need you to understand that saying "the combat sucks" is peanut-brain moron shit.

Why do you think you're saying anything of value? You're not.
I'm telling you that of course the combat sucks, but that's not the point of the game as it isn't in some other genres.
It's like saying the combat in Dragon's Lair sucks. No shit. It's a fricking FMV game.
You're dumb for feeling the need to say that this game where combat is a cutscene has bad combat, just because it superficially looks like other Game Boy games with actual combat.
Like those games of other genres with bad combat, it has other things going for it.

Reminder that Ganker tier shitpost threads are allowed if they are against Nintendo. One reason for that is that jannies are fanboys. The other more psychological reason is that Nintendo is kinda like the tall big Chad guy in the room so no one really cares if you shove him a bit

the gbc is very cool, i love its design and the screen is still quite good. the pic you posted is a nice example. also the wormlight grants you comfy bed play. most of the library is shovelware, sure, but there are some good games if you bother to search. the original gb is an ugly brick without any good points save nostalgia factor.

I have quite a few games for Game Boy/Color (either virtual console or physically) that are not Pokemon. I don’t even own any of the Pokemon Game Boy games.
I have the all the Mega Man GB series games, all the Bomberman GB games, Super Mario Land 2, Tetris, Dig Dug, Mole Mania, all the Kirby games, Game & Watch Gallery 1 and 3, Shantae, Bomberman Quest, Hamtaro: Ham-Hams Unite, and Mr. Driller. So that’s at least 20 non-Pokemon games.

Maybe I realized this way later than everyone else but now it's obvious to me that when people talk about handheld games being good, they really mean "good for a handheld game." Handheld games made sense as a kid because I had to go places with my parents and we also only had one TV in the house that they didn't want me hogging with a console. But now as an adult why in the world would I ever choose to play Aria of Sorrow instead of Symphony of the Night, or Golden Sun instead of Chrono Trigger?

Not true at least for me. I emulate these games nowadays so they're both on the same device. There are some handheld games that exceed console but obviously not in the graphics or spectacle department. Some companies also made slightly moronic decisions putting gr8 concepts on handheld that could've been better as console

Not true. A good game is a good game.

Sometimes I like to play trimmed down versions of old classics, there's an appeal in how short and accessible handheld games tend to be. But yeah it's rare that there's an handheld game that doesn't simply have a superior version of itself on home consoles.

      Anonymous

Because you've already played Chrono Trigger and SotN a bunch of times and want something new? Using that logic, why play NES games when SNES games exist? Stop comparing handhelds to their home contemporaries, they're all part of history now, we'll probably never have dedicated handhelds ever again. Just pretend they exist in their own timeline where the year 2000 is more like the year 1990. Substract 10 from the release date and be impressed with great graphics for its time

The flaw here is that you’re looking at it from a modern day perspective rather than from the perspective of a kid on a road trip in 2003 that didn’t have a smartphone capable of emulating sixth gen tier games. And that’s if you were lucky enough to have parents willing to get you a Game Boy Advance.

I get your point, but still disagree, since to me it's all a matter of perspective. I mean, to me it's not about "WHY would I EVER play [Console] OVER a [Inspired/Similar Handheld]???" when to me... I'll just play both! If I like a series and/or genre/style of video game, then to me it's like having a single chocolate bar over having a couple of them when one is slightly better... I'd still rather have BOTH!

If you were a kid in the 90s, having a Game Boy or Game Gear on a long family road trip was a million times better than being stuck with this.

A lot of those have way better home and arcade versions which these days are all equally portable via emulation. Parodious is gorgeous in arcades

        Anonymous

Just because a game is fancier in the arcade doesn't make its ports to other systems not worth playing. Parodius on gameboy is a fantastic game on the system, the arcade version existing doesn't make that not true. Also there's often differences in ports to make them more suitable for the hardware it's being ported to, often those differences change the game enough to make it a fresh/unique experience. Take something like Bionic Commando, the arcade/NES/Gameboy games are all totally different.
