The shooting was nothing revolutionary, even mediocre compared to other games. The driving sucked and felt like driving a boat. And you barely had any side missions beside bowling
No, the story/plot was very well written and put together too.
And to dislike the driving physics just shows that you sucked at the game and have a plebeian taste, incapable to enjoy what at the time felt like a next-gen experience. And it still does.
>The driving sucked and felt like driving a boat.
GTAIV driving was the best. Cars actually had handling characteristics and didn't drive glued on rails. You could feel diffence in handling, you lose control if steer too hard. Cars are not supposed to have infinite steering ability.
Driving physics were shit if you were playing on keyboard, they really didnt thought the physics well for keyboard, they fixed it in V I guess. Still, GTA is for arcade driving, that's why they went back to arcade in V.

Driving and the rest of GTA4 were easy as frick on a keyboard.
Only people that had trouble with driving in GTA4 were the morons that kept speeding at 200mph then wondering why they couldn't drive around a 90deg corner

4 is shit. euphoria tech demo (which is cool)
more complicated car physics (but still fricked)
terrible everything else.
it's a shame they took the really amazing complex physics from GTA4 and made them braindead for GTA5. consolegays just can't drive a simlulation like that with the 50-150ms latency you woukld get from most most TV's at that time. it was really fricking painful. I hope GTA6 makes it more like a sim again.
they might? hardware has caught up... the power creep from GTA3 to GTA online is fricking insane. drinving a fricking rocket bike with missiles or military jets and choppers around.... there's nowhere to go "upwards" the only option is to make it more difficult to do regular things so that pulling off 5 stars and stealing military tech is actually a challenge again. gtao already has aimbot npcs and they are both not challenging and completely immersion breaking. I don't see it going any other way.
I can't get into 4 because of how the shitty its open world is. In GSA you had dozens of side missions, could own properties, had player stats and tons of cool shit. In 4 you have money, and you use it to get weapons to get more money.

Yes and there is no way modern Rockstar will ever surpass it.
How so? It's the same game with more content. Vice City is my personal favorite because of the setting and soundtrack, but I can admit that San Andreas is a better game.
How so? I'd say VC hasn't aged well just because its shooting controls are so horrible
SA more or less has the same controls as IV and V, just with different mappings
I should've clarified that from the perspective of actually engaging with the game as a cohesive story & world. The story drops off right when it gets interesting which kills the momentum & that’s after forcing you to engage with it's side activities none of which I like, I find the world tedious because it's so big & california is boring as frick compared to miami.
Basically the whole game is a slog for me, literally everything about it is a grind with nothing else going for it.
How so? I'd say VC hasn't aged well just because its shooting controls are so horrible

This was never the draw of these games for me, I'd trade worse gameplay for interesting missions & stories both those things in san andreas feel like an excuse to introduce you to it’s sandbox elements & collectathons which was clearly the focus of the game. That's fine, just not for me.
where would you like to live if you lived in GTA:SA?
I think I would choose north east fan fierro for the city and being able to frick off out to the desert on weekends
i liked the San Fierro missions the most i think. shit was hitting the fan in Los Santos, you realize youve been betrayed and start to set out for revenge. i enjoyed driving around san fierro in the rain, having shootouts with the triads. my buddy and i always started co-op there, turned on all the crazy armed riot ped cheats and would try and make it to the airport and take off. so yeah i think San Fierro was the place for me.
smaller monitors, 4:3 aspect ratio, being used to a closer horizon, literally the biggest map in a game at the time, the fact that it was open world, etc
Draw distance was shit and the routes were not straightforward specially between the cities
both wrong >routes were not straightforward
ok sort of.
the magic is that they put you in one little spot, constrict your options for leaving, let you get comfortable with the limitations of your cage, and then BAM! here's another new area just as big, or ok now you finally get to use your own aircraft.
if you could jump in a helicopter and fly around at the start the game would immediately fee like the little sandbox it is. completely ruining the immersion. This is why I don't understand why people cheat in GTA (both on and offline) you're literally reuining the game for yourself, and onlinme for everyone else. not that cheating fricks would know but if you play the games properly they gradually teach you how to move around the city and give you resources that turn you into a god anyway. fricking idiots. and it's so much better when you "earnt" it.
went hunting for bigfoot and leather face once. once. of course by the time i got out to the spots, it was night time in game, and also well passed midnight. didnt find shit obviously but i was scared shitless and jumping at every noise. there was that empty cabin in the woods in back o' beyond where leatherface allegedly spawned.
I just hope, honestly after the fricking shitshow that is GTA online on PC that they actually just go subscription model for the online, if that means that they actually have dedicated servers. if it's P2P again it's fricked from the start.
>if that means that they actually have dedicated servers
Not a chance in hell. Take2 are a bunch of cheap bastards. It'll just be GTAO but rebranded for GTA6.
GTA IV is still my favorite. The atmosphere is great, and it has that whole "2000 and something" charm that a lot of games that came out between 2007-09 had. I don't know how to describe it, but to me, that was a period in gaming where the technology and ambitions of devs were being pushed and the next generation was looking very, very bright. If only we knew how hard the industry would nosedive after.
The entire chunk of the campaign where you have to do shit for Catalina in da woods should have been cut out.
Unenjoyable missions for that unfunny b***h is as miserable as everything Trevor related in GTA5 condensed to 1~2 hours.
GTA V in general was a slog to me. I remember I had a moment where I switched to Michael, he was in some park. There were tons of NPCs onscreen, a blimp, a helicopter tour, just tons of shit going on and in that moment I was genuinely blown away by how big the game was. It was the game that taught me all the bells and whistles just can't make up for the lack of a soul.

I never noticed GTA 5 had any of these mechanics because it didn't and you're lying
3 was the last game that felt like a GTA game. it was dark, grim, hopeless, and everyone was out to kill you, and it was a crime simulator. VC and SA added too much useless shit that doesn't belong in a GTA game, and the games were too happy and colorful to be a GTA game, but they were spinoffs so it's OK.
IV went back to GTA roots with it being dark and grim and removed the useless crap and focused more on gunplau and crime, like what a GTA game should.
Then V came out, was a discount shittier SA for 2 years before becoming a bootloader for GTA Online afterwards.
thats kinda the games plot though, its ultimately about how people will never leave the hood
hell carl tried his hardest to make it out but the game dragged him back
I think switching around clothes and hairstyle to one that fits the respective part of the story increases the feeling of immersion a lot.
Start off with green hoody or such for grove street colors.
Then in the boons start wearing the dark green "battle jacket" that looks like washed out grove street colors.
Then later in San Fierro start wearing a jeans jacket as Carl starts to forget about the hood and tries to act more like a crime business owner/manager.
Then in bone county and Las Venturas start wearing increasingly more formal clothes that make Carl look more like a big shoot and after the Liberty City mission, he goes full-on suit with a gentleman's hat.
Finally, after reuniting with Sweet he starts wearing a silly green formal suit and a green hat (derby) for the grove street colors, but does not give up on the high-class clothing, showing his attitude that CJ only goes along with Sweet for the inter-personal human relationships, and not for the hood culture aspect that glorifies living in perpetual poverty. It surprisingly even fit the dialogue between CJ and Sweet at points.
once i got to LV and became a bonafide half a wiseguy, i always wore a wifebeater with either black pleated dress pants or grove street green dress pants, and black wingtips, and a matching fedora and used the baseball bat a lot as my chosen instrument of deliverance.
you are now aware that if your car blew up, or disappeared because of a mission cutscene in san andreas, you can get it from the garage under the nearest police station

Bewt city and worst city? For me I liked Bone country for the freedom it gives you driving and I hated Flint county for the missions.
Red County is comfy as hell, Bone county is unsettling at night time, overall Las Venturas for me is the best one
The best fun I had was killing San Franciscan urbanites.
I used to change my favorite areas every few weeks, it's like each one had its own reason to be comfy or interesting.
Does anything happen in Tierra Robada?
Toreno the glowie lives there and gives you some missions.
toreno missions and boat school, thats about it

For me, its Marina.
always bought a house there in samp for my mafia RP

Same here, I always wanted a property on that place when I was a kid
the two house i used the most was the one in fort cason and the appartement in the hippies neighbourhood of SF (somethingbury)

Original Xbox
Just PC imo, even if you want the PS2 vibe theres some mods for it
PC version. Just get used to the 25 fps, playing with frame limiter off is glitchy as frick.
yeah PC. mouse and keyboard is far superior for driving., you get freelook all the time. just switch to a controller for aircraft.
PC
3 and VC got reverse engineered so you can have some extra goodies like freelook in cars
SA has mods to fix the broken or missing visual effects
PC with PS2 features restored + CLEO

Too much sprawl. Too long. Story is "interesting".

You have to wear a "smart suit" for the mafia missions. The game won't let you start them without one.

They should stop making games set in Liberty, Los Santos and Vice City and bring bag San Fierro and Venturas.
