Literally this. I do an impeccable Colonel Campbell impression for friends and it's all good fun. I give other people the ability to do an impeccable impression and EVERYONE LOSES THEIR MINDS.
If VA realized they're entirely replaceable now and stopped trying to shame me for making them say Obama did 9/11 for a gaff, they could get a head start on finding and industry that can't replace them with even the most rudimentary AI.

AI has already gotten good at copying voices, eventually it will be able to be a perfect imitation of voices including emotion etc. So the AI voice and the real voice will become the same.
There is clearly value in the VA's voice, otherwise they would not copy it. (I don't mean value as in simply "good/bad." Circumstances, like being a hired character role, are also value even if "given" to them.)
You can't just say "I can use your voice better than you can, so I own it now and can do what I want with it." It's unethical to steal someone's property. Their voice is their property, you have to work out a deal with them if you want to use it.

If a thing makes more money than the other thing then that's what gets made
Gacha games have completely overtaken the video game market and only continue to get bigger. And there's no reversing that. Because companies now see gacha makes money.
Do you not comprehend this? Do you think they'll ignore profit that's there in other to make something that's "good", when they don't need to. The slop makes more money than the quality.

And yet good video games continue to get made. Same with good movies. Strange.
There will always be people willing to work a little harder in order to reach to a niche market. Did the creation of processed cheese mean the real stuff is now unable to be bought? Of course not. It might be less common, but as long as there are a sizeable number of people willing to pay a little bit more to get the good stuff, there will be people who see that business opportunity and take advantage of it.
Do you think that every single video game company could switch to making gacha and stay profitable? Do you think that literally anyone could make a show as terrible as Mando and make money without the advantage of having the Star Wars branding? Business is about filling a demand, and those demands have already been met.

It really is just 99% copyright infringement in the fan sphere. Unironically Baal Buddy probably is the most legal considering most of his stuff is parody but even he is pretty sketchy in terms of fair use sometimes.

            Anonymous

There's no point even talking about the legality of it since AI stuff is wholly legal. I'm just talking pure logic regarding morals, and making AI art of something or making fan art is exactly the same thing from that point of view.

I'd actually be 100% okay with banning AI art/voice if we went full circle and banned all fanart/fiction and sued anyone who made money directly or indirectly off of those fanworks.

My big concern with AI voices and deepfakes are that soon it will be impossible to use a photo, video or audio clip as evidence for anything. As they stand currently, our legal systems will completely cease to function when all evidence can be easily fabricated.

It's not "your voice". It just SOUNDS like your voice.

Same as a drawing of your face isn't your face. It just looks like it.

A "photo" of your face can be construed as your face. Even recorded images from a video camera. But if someone draws using you as a model, that's not your face.

If you didn't record it, it's not your voice, no matter how much it sounds like it.

        Yes.
Someone's voice is a very personal thing.
An AI program can't reproduce a person's voice flawlessly but it CAN be a very convincing ILLUSION.
And because the illusion is so convincing, it makes people THINK it's someone's voice, when it's not.
Same deal as when someone is watching a movie and someone dies in a bloody pulp. It's not real blood, no one died, but the illusion is so strong people convince themselves it's real.

        But it's not.

missing the point. AI can't generate an artificial voice that sounds nearly identical to a real voice without directly using that persons real voice. it IS using their voice.

            Anonymous

Nah. It's splicing an impression together out of other voices, presumably voices of people that consented to their voices being used that way

              Anonymous

Use your brain. You're smart enough to know AI doesn't know what [voice actor]s voice sounds like. It had to find out from somewhere. Hint: probably from that voice actor's own recordings.

                Anonymous

Yeah I was making this shit when it was free. It required 30 seconds of audio to immitate a voice. Audio that didn't have anywhere near enough variety of sounds to splice together all the vocalizations it can spit out.
                It's not their voice

                Anonymous

Yeah but that's irrelevant. The generated audio does not contain their voice

                Anonymous

No it's actually very relevant. the AI generated voice does not exist without the voice actor. The voice actor is contributing to something that he or she did not want to contribute to, did not get paid to contribute to, may not support, and may lose employment opportunities because of it.

At some point why not just be honest about it though? "I want Nolan North to voice my vidya project, but I don't want to play Nolan North."
There's little to no point in elaborate set dressings, that's the core of the whole thing. And even then, it shouldn't matter if it's just shitposts, but it's fairly obvious why it'd matter for the person in question what that's by overally byline. If someone's voice gets twisted back and forth, just used as a jumping off point, then I wouldn't see it as much of an issue, but that's not the case here.

I really hope it humbles the frick out of artists because they are lazy as all shit. Laziest people on the planet in current year. VAs on the other hand are already dirt cheap. You wanna talk about the internet's stance on free use? Let's talk about it. Here's a video you've probably seen before!

Cool, right? It's got videogames on it and everything. Except the people making that show didn't boot up the game, play a little and record that minute or so of game footage, it was STOLEN off the INTERNET for FREE. By a corporation that is worth billions. That corporation didn't buy the video or even ask the creator of the video for permission. It was STOLEN. Stolen and then used in a TV show whose ad time mad the station many millions of dollars when it aired. And guess what, it was fair game. Why? Because it was on "the internet" and "hosted on a free video hosting site" which in modern parlance means it is free to use as you wish in any way you want.
You wanna know what else has been hosted for free in a video hosting site? Countless let's plays of Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 in high definition video and audio, many of those played on CDs purchased legally and played on actual Playstation/PC hardware.
Does that suck that someone's performance in a video has been taken and used to train an AI voice output? Maybe. But Youtube hasn't taken down the Let's Plays or the gameplay videos or just the codec calls that have been preserved and uploaded years ago for Metal Gear Solid. Or ANY game for that matter. Still up, still available, still in public.
If "using someone's voice" was such a big infringement then you'd have heard about it during the Youtube Poop era, where they ACTUALLY used their recorded lines in different ways. And we didn't. Funny how that works.

Careful what you say there, I've seen enough publishers and devs saying that streamers should have to pay them a cut of the donations they get while streaming their game. I wouldn't put it past people to try it.

                Oh they already tried it.
                And they're gonna keep trying.
Why do you think music labels exist? And why do you think so many musicians die young?
If you can make money for nothing, why not?
"These people are PLAYING OUR GAME and we're NOT being paid for it? Even though they already BOUGHT IT?"
                It's a israelite's dream.

I am a professional artist and Ive worked for major film studios.
I love ai. It automates a lot of my work and then I polish it.
If you are not doing this you are a fool.
I can now turn out a great artpiece in 2-4 days if Im being a perfectionist about it and like hours if its a eh whatever piece.

If you were any decent, youd be making your own models and using it to automate your own work and improve your own shit and submit it. What are you going to do b***h at me for ai generating my own work stealing from myself? Are you fricking insane?

The FACT is that youre a hack of a single medium and since you aren't a jack of all trades, creative, or innovative you cannot keep up gramps.
Oh nooo the voice actor model is doing lines for me while im also reading other lines and im doing 6 projects at once making 6x as much money.
OH NO WHAT EVER WILL I DO!?
The problem is you cant keep up and you can't innovate. Youre coasting your entire life on your gradeschool and highschool skillset and your inflated ego where you think youre better than everyone else and deserve to be treated like some god.
    Youre shit. Deal with it.
    Cant handle it?
    Fricking shut up and quit.
Otherwise adapt and make something that others can't.
All that happened is the skill ceiling went up and the skill floor went down.
Climb or fricking cry about it.

Sure you cant legally claim the ai voice if its not yours, but if it is mine, and I made it, then I can give you permission to buy it from me and if youre worried about it being copyright blah blah blah ill sell it you as a compilation of the voicelines with a picture of my tiny troony dick and you can legally use it because you own it.

The only problem ive really seen is sometimes its lacks human expression and it can be a bit....stiff.

Its making things perfect when most people dont realize much of the human mind is determined by the expression of shapes and images and their implied context not necessarily biological realistic perfection.

Ren and stimpy for example can do things artistically that it is very difficult for ai to do.
You could have the ai do backgrounds and characters and then ren choking or something hand drawn and save a lot of your time and put all the effort into the gag effect's expression. I think artists have gotten lazy and have been coasting far too long on their shitty calarts cookie cutter homosexualry.

                Anonymous

That's not a notable problem because "real" human art is often like that too. Even countless masterworks are like that.
Ren and Stimpy is disgusting but yeah that intent is often missing from AI art but you can prompt stuff like that too. For example the breast expansion anons, the images they'd make tell small stories like your image.

                Anonymous

The real fear is when the ai can interpret emotions and zoomins and stuff and I can just type: "Ren exploding with anger swelling up shaking violently leaking fluid and blocks of coal out of him as a train engine circles around him and daggers rise in and out of his fingers." And then it actually makes it first try or so.
I can technically make that now but it would be like piece by piece by piece and would be much faster to just draw most of it and then use the ai to fix up the drawing.

But once ai can make shit like that with expressionable emotion and abstract objects that can relate to each other, then the whole art world will flip upside down and it will become a bipolar manic state of a youtube poop salvador dali apocalyptic fever dream.

Why are these voice actors so upset?

It's not THEIR voice. It just sounds like it but considering they NEVER said/recorded those things in the first place - then it's not THEIR voice no matter how much they claim it to be.

Maybe if VA weren't such diva mega c**ts like futabas VA is faking leaving twitter over an AI sounding voice of her then maybe I might give a shit. People told her the truth and that it's not her voice, just sounds like it and she divas and leaves twitter and gets her simps to attack the guy who did it.

                How so?

In both cases you're using the ideas of other artists to create art similar to it. Though of course you can make AI art that isn't really fan art too, it's a matter of intent.

See at that point we'd be getting into where the line between inspiration and straight up copying begins and ends, and that's a fricking complicated issue.

Most people can't come up with ANYTHING on their own, in which case they're just copying ideas pretending they're being inspired. Inspiration is something leading to much more profound art than what the average fan artist can do. They just copy, trace, photobash, etc. Most artists are like that.

it's not "your voice", it just sounds like you. Would you try to stop someone who sounds like you from speaking? No? Then you have no say here either.
      It's not really you.

That said it is creepy to consider someone impostering you so completely they are able to frame you for crimes or actions you never committed. Maybe if governments had a more advanced version of software capable of generating convincing video they would stage events as a pretext for action to be taken or for laws to be written.

Either way, I like this technology and don't want to see it banned or castrated.

Now that their niche is being entirely outmoded and eradicated and automation hasn't created a something-from-nothing free economy, they're the ones that the robots will be starving out and it's hitting them like a sack of bricks.

This shit is so fricking moronic.
There are only 3 points with this issue that should matter.
    >1. if I sample/splice the work of a VA and use it for commercial purposes while passing it off as work of the VA, I’m rightfully in legal shit.
    >2. If I use software to perfectly mimic the frequency/pitch/tone of a VA’s voice for whatever purpose, and pass it off as having been done by the VA, then I’m rightfully in legal shit.
    >3. If I do the same as #2, commercial reasons or otherwise, and don’t credit the VA (or for extra protection, credit myself or whoever did the audio work for me), then anyone who wants to cry about it can go frick themselves.
    tl;dr you can’t own a a general pitch+frequency profile.

      Anonymous

The issue isn't the pitch it's the performance.
It's one thing to say, "I'm gonna get Futaba's VA, in Futaba's general voice, to do a different character for my game" to "I'm just gonna put Futaba in everything but name in my game"
Honestly at that point you're not just in trouble with the VA though, but anyone that's worked on the character. Writer and character designer included.

I like when people make cool stuff with AI, combining things and prompts I haven't considered. The 80s fantasy movie reimaginations were pretty uniformly fun, for instance.
I like it a little less when it's just facsimile (like the shitload of AI art generated using the FFT artist's work and style) but at least if it's like new poses for characters and such, I can roll with it, so long as it's acknowledged.
I think it's dumb when it gets dressed up in some crusade against artists/VAs, while being blatantly clear that you want what they do, just without paying of it. I mean, do that if you want to, just don't pull the wool over my eyes.
It's the most revolutionary thing in decades and it still gets bogged down by petty spite on one site and panicked whinging on the other, all centered around once again wanting an enemy to fight against day and night. It's just tiresome.

      Anonymous

This anon gets it. What AI evangelists need to understand is the reason the public hates AI and AI people isn't because they're afraid they'll lose their jobs, it's because the sheer vitriol and scorn that AI people spout against actual artists is what turns people off.

        Anonymous

To be fair, I think artists blow the gasket a lot as well. I just think much of this could have been mitigated at the start, but AI had a huge leftover NFT-grift techboom rush, with all the necessary jargon that entails. Artists reacted out of emotion rather than reason, though yeah I'd probably get mad too. But even when it simmered down, there's just constant spiteful gotchas and it all just starts over and over again.

AI creates shit from it's database, meaning it can easily generate bootlegs from nothing at an imense volume and at very high speeds.

Voices are not unique, you can’t copyright them. Otherwise people wouldn’t be legally allowed to do impressions. On top of that this is just one and zeros and you can adjust the parameters to your liking, so no it’s not Monica Rial in my indie game, it’s my sister :^)

voice to voice can replicate most emotions but you need to have a good input, text to voice is harder but the best ones can sometimes pull it off
for the latter I think it's a similar problem to image generation: not enough specification in parameters

Unless you genuinely dip your toes into everything, there's always going to be one specific thing you specialize in that you build your livelihood upon. An anesthesiologist is rarely going to be disciplined well enough in other fields for a rebound if that career path were to close up. Most people want and wish for stability.

          Anonymous

That's fricking bullshit. People shouldn't limit themselves to one thing if they want to succeed. If they didn't want to be replaced, they would've specialized in more things instead of wasting time polishing their talents to a microscopic point.

Stability is nice, which is why I pick up new skills that will continue to be useful for the foreseeable future, even in an apocalypse scenario in some cases.
That's what I call job security, not betting it all on that one dream job

There's only so much anyone can do. People who get consumed by one job that takes up a lot of their time and devote time to their family afterwards, they sure as hell would prefer to be able to do what they do until retirement. And that's not even getting into the point that "jack of all trades master of none" is a saying for a reason. If you don't hone your skills, you won't succeed in the one field you specialize in, but if you try to do everything at the same time, you'll still be outclassed by people who do specialize, and when you inevitable restart your career from 0, you're once again outclassed by people who specialized harder.
I dunno man, this just sounds like easy sigma grindset answers and platitudes.

This. Adaptability rules the day over talent. People want someone who can do a million things decently instead of one thing with expert precision. There's no point in learning something to a masterful degree when a machine achieve similar quality in a fraction of the time. Better to put all your time and effort in a million things and never be useless than to almost reach the capability of machines.

It's simply taking the work of the later and packaging it on a software model to profit from it.

All the value in AI comes exclusively from the work done by the skilled useful people, the fact that tech startups don't want to pay to use it is their problem, one that is easily solvable.

Sometimes, the truth hurts, but it's natural for people to lash out. That being the case, people realizing everything they've done up to this point has been for nothing will naturally result in people feeling a great urge to lash out against the thing replacing them. Good riddance. We don't need useless people in the future. Maybe they can go learn something useful for once, like how to mine ore or how to grow vegetables. We don't need creatives, we need do-ers.
