Marisa. I got her into Plat and then won another couple matches and decided to learn a character that seemed weaker because it felt too easy and I wanted to know if I was carried. I've gotten Lily to Gold 3 now and it's definitely a harder climb than Marisa but I think I can get there in roughly the same amount of matches.

bronze kens are probably the most jump-in happy people there is. Learn how to AA properly and you'll have a sweet ride towards platinum. They also love mashing on block, so check out which moves are plus (maybe you'll have to drink) and punish that low kick follow up accordingly. Also punish dragonlash, they love dragonlash
It feels like Ken's normals are all better than Jamie's and he will always beat me in neutral, I don't know if that's true or if I'm using the wrong buttons.
He would be perfect if his drink was just a split second faster. Right now it's slower than a normal Hadouken. Apparently the drink doesn't count until the last few frames of the animation which is annoying as frick.
Yeah, it's 48f startup 2f recovery for a drink so if you don't get in at round start on a character with a good fireball you have a huge uphill climb. Lily's almost as bad but at least she can Condor Dive a bad fireball and get the room to stock Wind; Jamie can't even divekick until Level 1.

You can tell they tried a lot with World Tour but it really does not work as a tutorial. So many fights are against groups and don't teach you to do anything other than spam crouching heavy kick, and when you get to the 1v1 fights that can actually teach you shit if you mess up the game really encourages you to brute force it with healing items/continues/remembering that it's a master battle that just lets you lose rather than actually learn what went wrong. Also the way the character customization works means the game's really pushing you to get onto Classic ASAP because most of your moves are locked behind inputs anyways and those that aren't end up "arbitrarily" restricting each other because they share inputs you don't care about - so you think you need to get into Classic to keep building your character, only to need to get back into Modern dozens of hours later because you're not consistent on the inputs yet and you need to focus on the fundamentals the game hasn't taught you to do anything.
If I had to design a single-player campaign/tutorial mode with my limited experience, I think I'd probably scrap the whole RPG mechanics/custom fighter thing. Instead, you'd have hundreds of bite-sized missions, that could be straight up vanilla fights that you'd have to honestly win 2 rounds out of 3 to complete, or gamified tutorials - not just stuff like Hadou Pizza or the subquests with the three dudes from WT, but Combo Trials and character-specific stuff like "hit this enemy with a Blanka-chan" or "hit this enemy with (whatever Kimberly's bomb is)" or "get through the enemy's barrage of attacks and hit them with a Spinning Piledriver". You wouldn't have access to all the missions at once - there'd be a narrative structure, where you gradually unlock missions to suit the story/not overwhelm the player. I think that would teach better, though it may be less immersive...think you could make it work though.
I really despise World Tour and think it's not even well designed as a singleplayer beat em up, HOWEVER I think it is exactly the power fantasy people who are godawful at fighting games want. People who don't want to learn or improve but just want to feel like they're getting stronger and better at combat without putting in any effort or ever having to think.
It must be crack to normie scrubs. Just get good equipment and spam energy drinks to win.
WT was a great idea but let down by a bunch of small failures and a couple big ones. It feels like the people that worked on it had no idea how to play fighting games, most of the fights are trash, it's impossible to play with any sort of intentionality against multiple enemies at once because they attack through each other constantly, frick with your combos, reverse your block direction randomly etc, it's obviously intended to just be spammed through with an overwhelming damage advantage and using consumables to facetank hits, and the fights against real characters are just basic VS CPU fights except they have way higher numbers than you if you didn't grind or you kill them in three touches if you did.
TFH's story mode is the correct way to handle it, it's a lot of similar ideas, no CAC or stats but still a pseudo-RPG with an overworld where you play through the story and running into enemies starts a fight that you can use a special to open with advantage or destroy breakable objects, but the enemy design is 5x better, the basic opponents are designed to actually teach you stuff instead of being filler you mash sweep or DI at until they go away, and the named characters have fully custom boss encounter designs with multiple phases and unique mechanics and not just a CPU fight with 5x as much health and damage and maybe an extra broken super.
I'm glad more devs are experimenting with actually interesting story/singleplayer modes in fighting games that make a "real" game out of it, but still no one has actually managed a whole game that even half way measures up to its potential. SF6 is a mess of sloppy gameplay, underwhelming story and annoying design choices that ended up 6/10, and TFH is a solid 9/10 but the devs are lazy shits and only one chapter out of 7 is released after three years.

Not a SF player, does an airthrow actually matter much? It's a huge deal in old GG but I don't think I've seen a single high level Chun use it yet, and I've only used it myself when I decided to force it to see how useful it was and most of the time it was just strictly worse than a normal anti air

Fireballs are for when you've conditioned your opponent not to jump. Anti Air them enough and they'll stick to the ground. Fireballs are a moving hitbox that don't demand timing a poke. You can also use them if your opponent is keeping away and trying to go for any sort of stock up move (jamie drinks, lily stocks, etc)

violent ken isnt really a "thing" he shows up once. Evil Ryu has combo properties and moves from Akuma. Gouken's move properties as Ryu and Kens(Stylish Ryu) master are opposite. as in his spinning kick goes up and his shoryuken goes across. Sakura is schoolgirl Ryu who learned Ryu's moves from videos of him so her specials dont go as far as his do with the exception of her Shoryuken that goes forward and then up because she cheats. Akuma kills people on purpose so hes a common superboss with fricked up moves and long combos

Once you hit level 18 mastery level with someone in WT you get another Master mission, doing that gets you get a unique gift that can only be given to a specific character. If you can figure out who the gift belongs to it gives you a big 40 bond points with that character.

Had a shit time yesterday when a friend that doesn't even play it pointed out a better strategy with him just by observing the mechanics, I couldn't figure it out after some 20 hours playing it I got literally 0 fighting game talent and just coast on a few tricks.
The fridges were the hardest enemies in WT to deal with.
The flying drones and roombas were a cute and intuitive way to teach scrub players about anti-airs/lows, but I still have no fricking clue what the refrigerators were supposed to teach me. They were just frustrating gimmick enemies.
Ryu, Gold 1. I haven't played much ranked as I was focusing on WT, but now that's out the way, I was having a bit of a character crisis and played Ken for a bit who I also got to Gold 1. I was going to just keep playing other characters, but I feel like I haven't reached a plateau with Ryu yet, so I think I'll do some more ranked on Ryu now.

It's just a silly little side mode. No reason to get sweaty about it.
Even a "for fun" mode is not fun if you're a level 1 against a level 100, and you have virtually no hope of winning and they can instagib you with one jab.
If it wasn't obvious already from WT they did not put an ounce of thought into balancing custom avatar battles. With the right combination of movesets and character proportions you can do infinites on people making healthbars irrelevant. Like other anons said don't take custom battles seriously.

i just bounce around in platinum 2 right now. started at bronze and got to platinum a week ago.
i love the character but im becoming too aware of her flaws to maintain the confidence that the playstyle benefits from. ken, jp, and kimberly are just so rough to deal with and it feels like all ive been running into recently.
i still have the drive to improve tho because i have so much fun with this game. im a smash player and this is the first traditional fighting game that im learning how to properly play. ill be master soon enough as long as i keep learning. might pick up dee jay as a side character though because he's fun
multihits don't consistently break DI like they're intended to depending on the timing of the moves, increasing the hitstop when it armors something would make it less random

Drive Gauge's offensive applications feel better than the defensive ones. Increase the cost of DI and DR. That's my only major complaint, otherwise it's just nitpicks or small character balance tweaks.

I dislike how using DI in neutral is an actual correct choice sometimes. Juri or Manon using st.HK too much? Just walk forward and DI so you can punish a poke with a full combo. Once someone shows they're willing to DI in neutral, footsies just become really awkward

My friend replied and told him he's good with his rum and coke. After more pestering and more "no thanks" Luke looked like he backed off. He sat in silence, just staring forward. Then, out of nowhere, he punched my friend in the back of the head so hard that his mouth slammed into the corner of the bar, teeth and blood spilling everywhere. "GET THE FRICK OUT OF MY SPOT YOU LITTLE b***hES" Luke screamed, gesturing and swinging wildly at us. "FRICK YOU, YOU THINK I DON'T KNOW MY SHIT? Landing DIs feels good but I'd rather just... Play Street Fighter instead of Street Fighter + DI chicken. How about they add an SF2 mode to the game where everyone in constantly on burnout and all DPs are invincible? That would be neat, can't be a lot of work and you don't even need a ranked for it, just make it an option for casual matches.
OD DC Hashogeki is good to setup a tick throw but otherwise, yeah I don't see a point of using l/m/h, OD hasho is okay with blockstrings to immediately go into a jab but it's still kinda meh.
To be fair she basically has no reason for being. SIN was destroyed, Shadaloo was destroyed and a normal life stopped being an option when her parents died. She a merc for hire because it pays good and she MIGHT end up encountering a fight that distracts her for a bit. Juri is an emotional void playing up her manic persona because she doesn't want to be pitied

The AI will not react to certain moves so she just learned to keep doing the same move or target combo -> special cancel over and over. Because DI costs something, isn't guaranteed to work, can still be punished, plenty of reasons really. I agree that DI should have more scaling, but when parries are too good you get shit metas like Third Strike.
Drive Parry is half a bar and refunds on perfect parry. Yes, it is more strict in terms of timing but you can also punish DI in multiple ways, you cannot punish a perfect parry into neutral.
Perfect Parry is fricking moronic and has basically zero punishment. If you frick up the perfect you get a normal parry. If you want to get a 40% combo off a perfect parry then getting baited and thrown out of the parry also needs to lead to a 40% combo

I don't know what you are still not understanding, PP has more use cases and is harder to hit, but it would strange offense if it was too good. It is perfectly balanced as is, the only change that needs to be done to DI is making it scale more for anything that isn't a stun.
If you perfect parry something then hit someone during their recovery frames, it scales the combo aka it counts as a hit/reduces the damage for the subsequent combo.

HP works best on single hit memes like JP throwing a ghost at close range and lariat works on dhalsim going into the spice dimension because hell get hit immediately upon exiting it. Blanka i got nothing because i havnt actually fought him as gief yet. once you get in you have to stay in. do not under any circumstances backjump or backdash against zoners because the absolute first thing you want to do is make them guess if youre going to jump on wakeup, block then SPD or literally do nothing and sell their sweat on Ebay as they try to figure out what youre doing.
i have this sneaking fricking suspicion that i dont have a plan for blanka ball because its safe and he backflips back to Brazil on block and hit unless its OD- then he start the Brazil space program and you bounce on hit
def need to hit the training room and fight all 3 of them for a while to get a feel for what to do. wish whiff punish and those other pre programmed practices in training would apply to the current character you're training against and not just Ryu..
st.HP is going to be doing alot of work and youre going to whiff immediately if you guess wrong but that the nature of the grappler. at tip range i think its safe on block from alot of normals but dont take my scrub word for it because i then DR in and scuff my SPD input

bronze kens are probably the most jump-in happy people there is. Learn how to AA properly and you'll have a sweet ride towards platinum. They also love mashing on block, so check out which moves are plus (maybe you'll have to drink) and punish that low kick follow up accordingly. Also punish dragonlash, they love dragonlash

Yeah, it's 48f startup 2f recovery for a drink so if you don't get in at round start on a character with a good fireball you have a huge uphill climb. Lily's almost as bad but at least she can Condor Dive a bad fireball and get the room to stock Wind; Jamie can't even divekick until Level 1.

You can tell they tried a lot with World Tour but it really does not work as a tutorial. So many fights are against groups and don't teach you to do anything other than spam crouching heavy kick, and when you get to the 1v1 fights that can actually teach you shit if you mess up the game really encourages you to brute force it with healing items/continues/remembering that it's a master battle that just lets you lose rather than actually learn what went wrong. Also the way the character customization works means the game's really pushing you to get onto Classic ASAP because most of your moves are locked behind inputs anyways and those that aren't end up "arbitrarily" restricting each other because they share inputs you don't care about - so you think you need to get into Classic to keep building your character, only to need to get back into Modern dozens of hours later because you're not consistent on the inputs yet and you need to focus on the fundamentals the game hasn't taught you to do anything.
If I had to design a single-player campaign/tutorial mode with my limited experience, I think I'd probably scrap the whole RPG mechanics/custom fighter thing. Instead, you'd have hundreds of bite-sized missions, that could be straight up vanilla fights that you'd have to honestly win 2 rounds out of 3 to complete, or gamified tutorials - not just stuff like Hadou Pizza or the subquests with the three dudes from WT, but Combo Trials and character-specific stuff like "hit this enemy with a Blanka-chan" or "hit this enemy with (whatever Kimberly's bomb is)" or "get through the enemy's barrage of attacks and hit them with a Spinning Piledriver". You wouldn't have access to all the missions at once - there'd be a narrative structure, where you gradually unlock missions to suit the story/not overwhelm the player. I think that would teach better, though it may be less immersive...think you could make it work though.
It teaches you some really basic stuff but does not teach combos much at all.
I really despise World Tour and think it's not even well designed as a singleplayer beat em up, HOWEVER I think it is exactly the power fantasy people who are godawful at fighting games want. People who don't want to learn or improve but just want to feel like they're getting stronger and better at combat without putting in any effort or ever having to think.

WT was a great idea but let down by a bunch of small failures and a couple big ones. It feels like the people that worked on it had no idea how to play fighting games, most of the fights are trash, it's impossible to play with any sort of intentionality against multiple enemies at once because they attack through each other constantly, frick with your combos, reverse your block direction randomly etc, it's obviously intended to just be spammed through with an overwhelming damage advantage and using consumables to facetank hits, and the fights against real characters are just basic VS CPU fights except they have way higher numbers than you if you didn't grind or you kill them in three touches if you did.
TFH's story mode is the correct way to handle it, it's a lot of similar ideas, no CAC or stats but still a pseudo-RPG with an overworld where you play through the story and running into enemies starts a fight that you can use a special to open with advantage or destroy breakable objects, but the enemy design is 5x better, the basic opponents are designed to actually teach you stuff instead of being filler you mash sweep or DI at until they go away, and the named characters have fully custom boss encounter designs with multiple phases and unique mechanics and not just a CPU fight with 5x as much health and damage and maybe an extra broken super.
I'm glad more devs are experimenting with actually interesting story/singleplayer modes in fighting games that make a "real" game out of it, but still no one has actually managed a whole game that even half way measures up to its potential. SF6 is a mess of sloppy gameplay, underwhelming story and annoying design choices that ended up 6/10, and TFH is a solid 9/10 but the devs are lazy shits and only one chapter out of 7 is released after three years.

There was a time where sticks had access to more consistent inputs for certain tech, and by a time I mean SF4 where plinking 1f links and pianoing mash specials were significantly easier on stick than pad. These days every fighting game takes into account pad players which is why mash inputs are gone now.
Dpad. Analog sticks can be really hard to be precise on but I've seen some morons becoming masters at using it. Wouldn't recommend since dpad is just 0 or 1 for your directions, less room to get something wrong

I'm playing Cammy and do motions most of the time since her kit doesn't feel too gutted. I just find it easier to keep four buttons in line instead of six. I've also been playing a lot of DNF so that also has something to do with it.

Fireballs are for when you've conditioned your opponent not to jump. Anti Air them enough and they'll stick to the ground. Fireballs are a moving hitbox that don't demand timing a poke. You can also use them if your opponent is keeping away and trying to go for any sort of stock up move (jamie drinks, lily stocks, etc)

Juri has bigger grounded normals, yeah, but Cammy's are still pretty good and her gameplan is more similar. Juri would be a good fit too, if you can get yourself used to managing her fuha stocks (Gio has no resource management, so there may be growing pains there).

violent ken isnt really a "thing" he shows up once. Evil Ryu has combo properties and moves from Akuma. Gouken's move properties as Ryu and Kens(Stylish Ryu) master are opposite. as in his spinning kick goes up and his shoryuken goes across. Sakura is schoolgirl Ryu who learned Ryu's moves from videos of him so her specials dont go as far as his do with the exception of her Shoryuken that goes forward and then up because she cheats. Akuma kills people on purpose so hes a common superboss with fricked up moves and long combos

Had a shit time yesterday when a friend that doesn't even play it pointed out a better strategy with him just by observing the mechanics, I couldn't figure it out after some 20 hours playing it I got literally 0 fighting game talent and just coast on a few tricks.
The fridges were the hardest enemies in WT to deal with.
The flying drones and roombas were a cute and intuitive way to teach scrub players about anti-airs/lows, but I still have no fricking clue what the refrigerators were supposed to teach me. They were just frustrating gimmick enemies.

i love the character but im becoming too aware of her flaws to maintain the confidence that the playstyle benefits from. ken, jp, and kimberly are just so rough to deal with and it feels like all ive been running into recently.
i still have the drive to improve tho because i have so much fun with this game. im a smash player and this is the first traditional fighting game that im learning how to properly play. ill be master soon enough as long as i keep learning. might pick up dee jay as a side character though because he's fun

Drive Gauge's offensive applications feel better than the defensive ones. Increase the cost of DI and DR. That's my only major complaint, otherwise it's just nitpicks or small character balance tweaks.

Some characters being able to immediately neutral jump after landing a punish DI, thus getting a free j.HK before their combo, is not okay
I dislike how using DI in neutral is an actual correct choice sometimes. Juri or Manon using st.HK too much? Just walk forward and DI so you can punish a poke with a full combo. Once someone shows they're willing to DI in neutral, footsies just become really awkward
its strange to because people say "just DI back" but you legitimately cannot if your mid poke because alot of pokes arent cancelable

I met Luke at a bar once. It was a Friday night and I was out with some friends getting drinks. It's not something I usually do, but I thought I should switch it up from my usual routine of coming home and getting mad at Jive. So we get to this bar, pull up our stools and order drinks. Everything seems cool, I feel myself loosen up enough to talk casually and tell some dad jokes. I finish telling one and suddenly a hand rests itself on my shoulder from behind.
"That wasn't funny." the voice presumably belonging to the hand said. I turn around to put a face to the voice and wouldn't you know it, it's Luke. I was dumbfounded that Luke was here of all places so I couldn't bring myself to say anything at first. He was wide-eyed and visibly agitated, like a bear about to strike. "HEY. I said that wasn't funny. I didn't even get it. You suck at jokes." he said, gripping harder now. All I could reply with was a sloppy "...I-I'm sorry?" He slapped me on the shoulder, chuckling like a buffoon. "It's cool, bro, not everyone can be as good as me at everything. Here's one for you. How many wives on their period does it take to paint a barn? DEPENDS ON HOW HARD YOU SANDBLAST EM"
He then laughed a laugh so raucous and piercing that everyone in the bar turned to look at who this maniac was. When they saw, they immediately turned away again. he then made the rounds around the bar, telling the same joke to everyone else and finishing with that same smug moron laugh. People were visibly uncomfortable, there were a lot of women dragging their friends and boyfriends out. Before long, only my friends, a few stragglers and myself were left.
Luke came back to where we were posted up once he ran out of victims and ordered an IPA. Once he got it, he downed it in one gulp, looking satisfied. He turned to my friend and demanded he order one. My friend replied and told him he's good with his rum and coke. After more pestering and more "no thanks" Luke looked like he backed off. He sat in silence, just staring forward. Then, out of nowhere, he punched my friend in the back of the head so hard that his mouth slammed into the corner of the bar, teeth and blood spilling everywhere. "GET THE FRICK OUT OF MY SPOT YOU LITTLE b***hES" Luke screamed, gesturing and swinging wildly at us. "FRICK YOU, YOU THINK I DON'T KNOW MY SHIT? I'M THE FUTURE OF STREET FIGHTER YOU LITTLE homosexual. GET THE FRICK OUT." We dragged our friend's unconscious body out and got him to a hospital, still not believing what we just experienced.
A month or so passed and we came to find out after that night, Luke purchased the bar where everything happened and put a giant poster of a screencap of us drinking and chatting from the security cameras up on the front window of the bar with big, Impact font letters that read "BANNED FOR LIFE"

Landing DIs feels good but I'd rather just... Play Street Fighter instead of Street Fighter + DI chicken. How about they add an SF2 mode to the game where everyone in constantly on burnout and all DPs are invincible? OD DC Hashogeki is good to setup a tick throw but otherwise, yeah I don't see a point of using l/m/h, OD hasho is okay with blockstrings to immediately go into a jab but it's still kinda meh.

Unironically watching my normie girlfriend play WT, she did the exact same thing. The AI will not react to certain moves so she just learned to keep doing the same move or target combo -> special cancel over and over. Probably someone who played WT and picked up bad habits from the game but didn't have the good sense to avoid online matches.

Because DI costs something, isn't guaranteed to work, can still be punished, plenty of reasons really. I agree that DI should have more scaling, but when parries are too good you get shit metas like Third Strike.

Drive Parry is half a bar and refunds on perfect parry. Yes, it is more strict in terms of timing but you can also punish DI in multiple ways, you cannot punish a perfect parry into neutral.

PP harder to time and less visual/audio information to respond to(normal attacks/specials)
DI easy mode react to their DI(large visual colors on screen, specific DI sound played that everyone uses[visual+audio])

I don't know what you are still not understanding, PP has more use cases and is harder to hit, but it would strange offense if it was too good. It is perfectly balanced as is, the only change that needs to be done to DI is making it scale more for anything that isn't a stun.

If you perfect parry something then hit someone during their recovery frames, it scales the combo aka it counts as a hit/reduces the damage for the subsequent combo.

HP works best on single hit memes like JP throwing a ghost at close range and lariat works on dhalsim going into the spice dimension because hell get hit immediately upon exiting it. Blanka i got nothing because i havnt actually fought him as gief yet. once you get in you have to stay in. do not under any circumstances backjump or backdash against zoners because the absolute first thing you want to do is make them guess if youre going to jump on wakeup, block then SPD or literally do nothing and sell their sweat on Ebay as they try to figure out what youre doing.

def need to hit the training room and fight all 3 of them for a while to get a feel for what to do. wish whiff punish and those other pre programmed practices in training would apply to the current character you're training against and not just Ryu..
st.HP is going to be doing alot of work and youre going to whiff immediately if you guess wrong but that the nature of the grappler. at tip range i think its safe on block from alot of normals but dont take my scrub word for it because i then DR in and scuff my SPD input

this is revisionism. SFIV had some okay tracks. SFV has the worst by far until G graced our ears everything between 2 and 3s doesnt match up to either.
V had a few decent tracks. I’m not sure where I’m at on 6 yet, I don’t think the tracks sound good in isolation but the way they progress through rounds of a match works pretty well when you’re actually playing.
