What is up with the skill discrepancy in silver. Some people absolutely destroy me and sometimes I come across someone who jumps in to get DPed 5 times in a row, then proceeds to do unsafe sweeps and DPs of his own.
It's early in the game's life cycle many people aren't at their true elo
I got placed in Iron because I was still getting a feel for the game during placements and rushed through silver in a few dozen matches because the winstreak bonuses get so huge, while a lot of noobs are getting stuck there legitimately.
With how many more points the game gives you per win anyone with a 50/50 winrate will eventually end up in gold. Will be interesting to see stats in a year or so.
Ranked just sucks ass honestly. The skill levels are all over the place at all levels. Tons of people in lower ranks who have literally no clue what's going on mixed with some frickers who probably just choked their placements and are stuck climbing.

because you can't demote from gold and below. if some shitter by chance reaches silver through placements, he will stay there despite playing like an iron that can't do a QCF.

I've hit platinum 4 and I'm already burnt out and sick of it. Whoever said this series required any sort of thought or skill was a liar. Mindlessly attempt the same thing, the exact same way from launch to the end of the game.
There's barely any interesting moves, nothing is scary cos holding db deals with 95% of the things the entire roster can do, jumping is just a noob trap, and hammering the light button every 2secs is genuinely useful because they removed the priority system for this.
You just play on autopilot as soon as you have combos muscle memorized and can react to DI.
It's so boring not having any advanced movement or unique ways to deal with things like Tekken allows. My whole time with this game has been me steamrolling through ranked asking "is this really all there is to SF?"

Ken meanwhile is just low barrier to entry, with not much to learn or build from.

Just run around the stadium and rebel camp beating up anybody with a fight style. The rebels always have a Cammy, Marisa, and JP. Once you got a few styles Mastered you can funnel their exp into Zangief.

How do you play defensively? Should I just react to everything or is there a trick that I'm missing?
Pay attention to what they do. People generally have the same offense flowchart, with like 1 mix-up they bothered to learn. This will help your chances of blocking at whatever DR bullshit they come at you with
Get your punishes down. If you want to play defensively without giving yourself shit odds, you need to milk their mistakes for all you can. If you block their crMK (for example) and don't get anything off of it, you're making things harder for yourself.
Reacting is good, but do things to help yourself react. Throw out baits (e.g. walking in and out of the range of their crMK and be ready to whiff punish (or just block it outright and stLK > DR, depending on character)). If you're just both in neutral, the things you have to react to are effectively infinite but then it starts to become feasible when you factor in your character, their character, spacing, meter, etc.

I always get obliterated when I lose neutral so I try to work on it. I usually mash whatever comes out the fastest when I see a gap in the pressure, but aiming for actual punishes might be the key.

2 frames is an unusual number to use for any parrt timing but it feels so fricking tight that it may be the case. Doesn't quite feel frame perfect but it does feel damn hard to pull off consistently

You're not going to do any combos if all you do is Sonic Boom and Flash Kick.
In the current state of the game Guile can play pretty much however he wants and do fine. I'd encourage you to use it at least a little, but you'll do just fine without it. Nuckledu was cooking people with Guile not even using projectiles the other night

in old fighting games you had to train almost half a year to git gud which is why im laughing at dudes giving up week two only recently with dumb shit like strive you could just look up combos and head into the game
You basically have to be buffering it ahead of time. If you wait until hit confirm it won't work. That's why you generally want one light poke, do another poke that combos from it and then combo into the special from that. That way you don't over commit and get countered.
The controller you use matters a lot. Unless you grew up using a stick in the arcade or are willing to put in the time, don't bother with stick. If pad on a controller feels comfortable for you and doesn't hurt your thumb, use that. If you're on PC, try keyboard. If not, and you have money, maybe consider a hitbox. I thought they weren't for me until I found the controller of my choice.
don't let combo trials discourage you anon, half of them are un-optimal in an actual match anyways
just pick up some easy combos on youtube and those should at least carry you to Silver while simultaneously learning advanced+DR combos

JP is absolutely a zoner. Sim was as much of a rushdown character as he has ever been in SFV, and it's obvious that Capcom made deliberate attempts to scale back his rushdown abilities and to make him more of a zoner character again. He's probably going to take a hit on the tier lists as a result because he can't do all the crazy shit he could do in V anymore, but he's certainly a zoner in this game again. Guile? I'll kinda agree with you on Guile. They just need to give Guile more zoning "tools". He does as much as he can with his 2-3 specials, but with his buttons, it's hard to not occasionally move in

You can combo a lot of normals into a DI so they eat your attack with their DI and then you launch your own skipping the recovery.
Do you know an anti-air?
Do you know a safe poke/blockstring?
Do you know a punish combo for when a bronzie does a raw DI or whiffs a DP or a super in your face?
Those three things should be all you need to get to silver.

I think ive plateaud with lily. I'm having lots of matches where I just don't have an answer for what my opponent is doing. I have to resort to wacky mind games like empty jump ins and fishing for them to di. Only way I can see to get better is to look at frame data and find out what moves Kimberly, DJ, Honda, Cammy, Jaime and juri are negative on because every time i think I'm safe I'm not . I'm gold 4 and I'm still climbing but those characters I just don't have an answer for unless the opponent just sucks.

Jump and get a fat punish on the way down if they whiff a grab until they learn to just jab. If they jab, that's still better than getting thrown normally since she now has to expend drive meter to get a medal and it does less damage.
Hold up. It may not seem like you can jump out in time but you always can. After you do that once or twice though they'll probably start hitting crouching jabs instead of throws so you'll have to start guessing.
Don't get hit by it. Otherwise, it's much better to just try to jump and take the combo than let her power up with a throw.

Getting out of gold is easy since you get winstreak bonuses. Platinum and up is when you start having to actually try and it's still not that bad since you always get more points when you win compared to losses.
