the twist was really lame. I didn't like the game.

Totally disagree. I thought the big reveal was clever. The game did meta in such a self-contained way that I don't see many other games with story loops doing. Usually the meta twist is is that they discover they're all in a video game simulation or something.

Agreed. When they talk about the Titanic and the book someone wrote beforehand, it sent chills up and down my spine, especially the music that goes with it. And then everything else that happens. I just found it genuinely enjoyable. Snake Eyes was a beast for someone who was blind. I enjoyed the sequel as well, but not as much. I tried to give the third a shot but I found it to be really bad. If I had to rate all 3, it would be

999 is just a great piece of ultrarrealism (when they mix reality with fiction but in a way where the two blend together and you don't know what is real and what isn't)

For example, they mention the Titanic and start sharing some basic facts about it. Facts that any person would know. But then they start slowly mentioning some bullshit about the cargo containing an Egyptian mummy. You have never heard of this but I guess it could be true? And to make matters worse they finish this by stating more true facts, which only further throws the game into uncanny valley.

Metal Gear Solid does the same and I love it. Unfortunately not many games do this.

From what I know it's just 999 and MGS.

To make matters worse I can't even look this up, I could swear the term for this narrative style was "ultrarrealism" but apparently it is not. While looking it up I also found "magical realism" (which is different) and "hiperrealism" (which everyone uses to describe graphics)

Don't get me wrong, ZTD is objectively terrible, but at the same time it's such a comedic trainwreck that skipping it is a waste.

I feel like ZTD's story would have been a lot better if they focused on this reason

            >locks up a bunch of innocent people alongside a psychopath murderer
            >have them play an extremely traumatic game
            >fakes the death of one of them, causing ptsd on his sister
            >watch as everybody gets killed in multiple different timelines
            >all so you can prevent your own death
June is kind of a selfish prostitute

For Junpei being a cynical butthole. Make him the Sans of 999. Obviously there was a lot more wrong with the main story but it would have given Team 7's story some purpose and force Akane to address everything that she's been doing. And it would have given Carlos a chance at being the peace maker for the two. I think I read somewhere that there was a different writer for all 3 teams? It felt like there was no communication on story direction or how the stories were going to come together.

Uchikoshi literally said "Wait, if I write the story, I can't experience a twist! Interns! Write the other two stories for I can be surprised too!" I wish I was joking, but that was the literal truth.

                >– When Uchikoshi was developing the second and third games simultaneously, he had the plot skeleton for the third game which was left intact, but the rest of the game became totally different. It’s because when he was writing the plot, he already knew what the outcome was going to be, so he might end up getting bored in writing the scenario. In order to avoid that, he had a suggestion to ‘surprise himself even more’, which resulted in the story getting changed.

Name another twist that ties directly into the console's defining feature

        Anonymous

The problem is that I played Ever 17 a few years before it, and the twist is pretty much the same. That really diminished it for me. If it was the first time encounterning this writer's work, I would have been more impressed, but since he seems to recycle the same idea so many times, I think he is kind of a hack.

          Anonymous

People's first uchi game is definitely the best received, then they read his other shit and the hackery breaks through.
Still storywise 999 at least is better paced than Ever 17 was, and I think the twist involving the DS screens was cute enough.
E17 suffers heavily from everything of interest being crammed into the final route, so you spend 20 hours reading about chicken sandwiches.

This is all irrelevant because R11 is better than both despite being blatantly unfinished.

            Anonymous

R11 felt like the best exploration of the meta concepts Uchikoshi will not stop doing, but honestly it might be that way because it didn't get finished, so there's more room for interpretation rather than someone just info dumping on you in a way that's has never felt all that satisfying in the other titles.

            Best soundtrack too.

I'm reading it right now, I'm half way through the second route. It's pretty comfy, I wish Uchikoshi kept writing more "escape" games.
