But Anon, ALL of the threads are shit.

I legitimately don't get the trouble you are having with this graph thing man. The info being shown is the run title, the individual votes, and the average of those votes. The graph is ordered by popularity. This really seems as simple as can be.

I thought the numbers to the right were out of a 100% and that the dots were well I don't fricking know.
I think its dumb to rate the events based on samegayging responses of a Z-S ratio, pretty shit way because the polls could easily be rigged and Z is not an actual grade.

It's a wisdom of the crowd and nobody actually bothers to rig them because there is no gain.
Showing individual votes also shows the distribution so rigging with votes isn't very effective.

The chart anon could rig them however he wants to, but it's not like these lists are gospel.
Lists before someone bothered to do this were much worse

No. Runs were boring and sterilized with runners having no real personality and not even much cringe. We couldn't even have fun threads because jannies were banning everyone left and right. You can tell how bad the event was this year because after past GDQs we would have at least some anons trying to keep threads alive because they missed the discussion or start speed running threads but this is the only thing that even comes up

Mario Sunshine was the closest we got, and even that wasn't all that cringey overall. The runner choked badly and almost had a panic attack, but he eventually recovered and it ended up being a pretty standard SMS speedrun.

            that's kinda lame

The troony mentally concedingly assaulting the SMS runner for 2 hours after he fricked up and almost cried.

MGR couch was hilarious and actually having fun like it was 2015. The runner spoke before and after the run and still had more personality than most other runners combined.

            Anonymous

He played a pre-recorded segmented run of the DLC while trying to pass it off as live in either some sort of 5D chess play about the state of speedrunning or just a bad decision while in a schizophrenic haze

We have our top scientists working around the clock to try and figure out what the frick he meant by it

              Anonymous

I think he meant to show how easy it is to cheat a speedrun and pass it off as legit, and how dumb it is to take speedrunning seriously as a result? Russians are known for not making any sense

                Anonymous

There's a kind of almost inherent Russian sentiment of seeing just how far you can get away with something you're not supposed to be doing.

A Russian friend of mine basically described it as it being a game where in this case it's seen as GDQ's fault for not verifying it.

The coming clean bit is either 5D chess or a rare case of actually feeling guilty.

                Anonymous

It had to have been something about the nature of speedrunning and personal growth if it isn't just a case of occam's razor taking into account the manifesto at the end. It's almost like the /srg/ meme really resonated with him and he wanted to say something profound but ended up doing it in the most incomprehensible and backwards way to the point it ruined his reputation. Unless that was exactly what he was going for, but who the frick knows what he really meant by it, I don't even know if he thought it all through.

It's a level of care that's lacking from the staff for the event. We can sense it subliminally.

They also haven't ran a in person event in over two years, so their organization is even more shit then usual. I committed in chat during a run about the set up times and got timed out even expressing hope that it'll get better. GDQ mods are worse then jannies.

It's a level of care that's lacking from the staff for the event. We can sense it subliminally.

Yeah I'm not sure it's all that fixable. It feels like some of the "passion" so to speak is well and truly gone now, but I think the covid era killed it, it's just extra noticeable now.

            Anonymous

It was noticeable before the covid era too. There's a kind of magic to the 2014 and earlier GDQs that just isn't there afterwards.
            I blame Knittler.

              Anonymous

I think 2013 was the peak but it was also inevitable it was going to go downhill from there, it just wasn't possible to keep the event like that, even if it didn't go corporate after 2014.

2013 was essentially a culmination of the GDQ's before it, speedrunning streams getting bigger and many people who build communities on their channels also attending, less strict policing obviously but maybe most importantly speedrunning itself was more fresh to the audience. A lot of the runs back then were honestly really shit but the tricks and concepts in games were very novel and new which made almost all games interesting to watch (in combination with more fun interactions with the couch etc) and runs like Cosmo's where he explained everything just immediately became really famous. Seeing storage glitch in Wind Waker for the first time was interesting, seeing Link swim while the camera is zoomed in for the 10th time is not, 2013 also had people like Siglemic and other big runners attend still which drew in a lot of people because he and other had big streaming presence.

Maybe it's just me but while I do think GDQ went to shit for many reasons I also don't think the 2013 and earlier "magic" was sustainable whatsoever. Excuse the reddit spacing I'm super tired.

                Anonymous

yeah i dont think the real good old days were ever gonna last but even corporate-GDQ wasnt THIS bad. like gdq's 2015 till 2018 and maybe even 2019 were honestly pretty good still all things considered.

                Anonymous

The first few superswims were cool, but yeah it got dull quick.
The more corporate GDQs got the worse they got. They were still watchable, don't get me wrong, but more and more of the magic dissapeared. Popular bidwars was redone EVERY event, even if the games they were relevant for weren't being ran. Like Kill/Save the animals.

                Anonymous

Incentives as a whole are bad for the events yeah. But I do really think that it would have gone down in quality consistently even if it wasn't so corporate, speedrunning just isn't as interesting anymore.

It seems to be declining. The donation farming was also very shameful this time around.

                Anonymous

Well you'd assume not. You'd think that even if they only pull in 1 million per event instead of 3 it'd still be worth doing, but these events often seemingly disappear entirely once interest and visibly starts going down instead of just downscaling. That said while there's less interest there's always gonna be a lot of people who have only watched 1-3 GDQ's before and to those it will stay interesting and they might be more inclined to donate which could be enough to keep it alive if the staff wants it to keep alive.

Realistically I think they need to do some of these things to maintain their numbers or stop them from falling too hard:
                >Actually advertise the event.
This is kind of cynical and as corporate as it can get but GDQ barely even puts the word out so normies don't know it's going on half the time. Twitch is much more mature as a platform compared to earlier GDQ's so people won't just tune in because ti's the biggest stream on currently.
                >Fix incentives
No one is gonna donate for impossible incentives anymore, audience has been catching on it's pointless. Remove some of the bonus games and just schedule hem normally, make incentives smaller and more reachable and again advertise one big incentive for the very end or something.
                >Schedule much better
This year was a mess not only because of Keizaron and co going over estimate but it was also just structured really weirdly, runs were all over the place in the week. Also stop declining shit like Puwexils runs etc, a lot of your audience are old boomers who have watched for a long time, don't completely neglect them to chase zoomer audiences with new games that don't work as speedruns.

It's one thing for him to keep giving himself 3 hour long prime time runs of games he sucks at, but the straw that broke the camel's back for me is how much of a homosexual he is not just on social media but literally on the stream itself. He spent most of the DiaPer run complaining about people making fun of him for blatantly giving himself long runs and using a cheated seed for the Emerald run. He's a major wanker

that Emerald "run" was cheated in so many ways even before you count them ignoring their own rules an hour in.

No actual runner would take running shit seriously, even as a randomizer it was just utterly fricked.

I think it's less randomizers being shit and more of them taking a bunch of other arbitrary shit on top of it
Emerald would be better if they:
                >didn't even bother with sticking to their rules
                >wasn't some onionlad every-level-is-a-random-evolution
                >wasn't a "co-op" run
                >wasn't a pre-vetted seed
Ocarina of Time would be better if they
                >didn't make it a "co-op" and a race
                >didn't make it dungeonsanity
                >wasn't a pre-vetted seed
the combination of all this shit made it hot garbage, it would've went better if they didn't go overboard with it for a meme category no one really cares about

I just wish they focused on other randomizers, every Pokemon randomizer ends up being the same no matter the generation, they've milked Super Metroid and Link to the Past and Ocarina/Majora's Mask randomizers.
I'd like them to at least go for the Zelda 2 randomizer, but I don't remember the last time they even ran normal Zelda 2, if at all

In terms of the romhack, ignoring the iffy odds stuff:
using HMs out of battle without the gym badges needed to use them
using any TM on any pokemon regardless of if it should work or not (something they abuse throughout the run to cheese the entire thing)
pulling numerous master balls out of their asses
having the rom edited to entirely skip the team magma/aqua stuff

I think a large part of it is that GDQ kind of grew in parallel with Twitch, it is no coincidence a lot of GDQ staff or older people with a bigger presence there are either close to Twitch or outright work there now. Streaming itself was better when GDQ was better, now Twitch has turned to shit and GDQ is kind of behind without clear direction.

If they hired a competent tech crew they could keep the same runs, even over estimate, and they'd be fine. Have stuff set up better beforehand and they could switch to the next game a lot faster. Shave off a minute or two each run and they're good.

lol GDQ is the top post on the Games subreddit, and the top comment says
    >GDQ should be embarrassed of how they've handled incentives and schedule delay this marathon. Incentive amounts were plainly unreasonable this year when so many needed Yetee or Twitch's divine intervention to be met, and the constant calls for donations unfairly took focus away from the runs that preceded them. Setup and stalling time driving the schedule so far behind that they had to ask people to withdraw their runs is already ridiculous, but it's adding insult to injury to bring back an unmet incentive in the end instead of one of the runs that was withdrawn. Blatantly stalling between the Elden Ring runs to artificially hit the 3 million target was even more absurd -- and then they apparently didn't set up the next run during that time? A run of the same game? Not only did it make an awful viewer experience that felt like the final run was being held hostage (anyone else notice how abruptly donations fell off after 3 million?), but if I were one of the runners who withdrew their runs, I would feel cheated out of an opportunity everyone in the speedrunning scene looks forward to. I know it's for charity, so it doesn't really fit to call it "greed", but I felt it was still extremely unprofessional and disrespectful towards their viewers and community.
lol you know if the brainless redditors have caught on to how shithouse these events are then GDQ has royally fricked up
    >nb4 go back

      Anonymous

thats not the top comment, its this:
      >I loved this hybrid setup. It was really the best of what I loved about both formats of GDQ. The online GDQs enabled skilled runners that couldn't travel to GDQ show off their stuff. The live GDQ had the crowd's energy, and this year they did an excellent job of directing the crowd's energy in a way that didn't get horrifyingly obnoxious (remember Orb?)

      >That said, holy shit I hated how desperate the hosts seemed to meet incentives this round. There were a lot of runs that the hosts were being incredibly distracting during technical parts I really wanted the couch or runner to talk about to keep donation rates up. I hated it.

      >SGDQ was great this year, but the hosts did not contribute to that many times. I hope AGDQ adjusts things next year. A solvable problem

      >I understand that this event is a donation event first and a speedrun event second but this year it felt like it was a donation event first.... second... and speedrunning was third. It's OK if the line doesn't keep going up. Your charity event can raise less money than it did last year. That's OK!

        >I understand that this event is a donation event first and a speedrun event second

Yeah but it won't ever change, that is what GDQ is, and it honestly always has been.

          Anonymous

It's depressing that this is accepted now. One of the reasons why GDQ was great was because it was a celebration of the speedrunning community first and a charity event second. When they stalled for $3 million with the camera pointed at the crowd counting down the remaining thousands of dollars, it was probably the most alienated I've felt from what GDQ has become since 2017.

I want the whole "probably autistic nerds sitting on a basement playing videogames for the hell of it" vibe of old GDQs back. Stalling for donos is cancerous shit.

The Super Mario 64 run was insufferable to watch at the end, because everyone was more focused on getting money for the shitty ass Pokemon run. I will give Simply the benefit of the doubt only because his expression of sheer, utter despair while everything was going on, but he did miss a throw on the last Bowser fight, suspiciously giving enough time for the incentive to be met.

I remember how ghetto first GDQs were "Oh hey, someone donated $5 with a joke, lemme read that" while they were joking around at the couch.

Exactly, it was just comfy stuff while watching vidya. Now it's sterilised corporate shit.

You might want to check out grandpoobear's mini pre-GDQ thing from this year. He rented out a bar and every time I checked in it was basically just friends hanging out on a couch speedrunning.
                >Simply
Was clearly just being a professional and trying not to shoot himself in the head listening to the host and commentator. One missed Bowser throw isn't much time.

That's why I am giving him the benefit of the doubt, like I said. He was surprisingly quiet and barely reacted to any of le epic donation maymays.

        >I understand that this event is a donation event first and a speedrun event
This mindset is why GDQ will never get any better, because the staff and the normalgays think the money comes first. It is a speedrunning event that happens to collect money to donate, but these absolute morons think that the runs are some bonus thing and should come second to however much money the staff thinks it should be making. Without the runs, there would be no donations, so why is the main event and the reason anyone is bothering with it treated as some side thing? The staff now screwing over the runners by cutting their games off the block in loo of making room for their pointless interviews and bonus incentives is proof enough of how little they care about anything other then lining their own pockets with dough.

Game & Shout is the most obnoxious host, it's like he gets off on edging to donation milestones and blowing out his vocal chords when they're reached.

lol GDQ is the top post on the Games subreddit, and the top comment says
I know it's for charity, so it doesn't really fit to call it "greed", but I felt it was still extremely unprofessional and disrespectful towards their viewers and community.
lol you know if the brainless redditors have caught on to how shithouse these events are then GDQ has royally fricked up
          >nb4 go back

It's nice to see people waking up to some of the obvious problems with the way the marathon is formatted.

      Anonymous

thats not the top comment, its this:

That's OK!

tl;dr coolmatty is an SDA / GDQ OG and probably the one of the biggest factors behind what the event is today, for better or worse. at least, he's always the one defending GDQ's decisions on SDA (when the feedback threads existed) and reddit and twitter more recently.
i don't say this with any malice, but he hasn't made a positive impression with any of his responses over the years. it's always "we're listening" or "we're ready to have a conversation" and then nothing changes. he's a company man.

Donation readers are picked by an open committee, it's literally the only role in GDQ protected from nepotism to some degree.

Yes there's a lot of repeats from event to event, but that's because they know how to nail the audition because obviously prior experience gives you a lot of insight into what to say.

The last thread brought up some good points about money laundering. Is GDQ run as a 501c charity? Some of the larger donations would also looks like a good way to pay the staff while avoiding things like FICA. You'd think raising ~$6M per year on a non-profit would attract a polite audit once in a while.

      Anonymous

GDQ is not a charity. Everything they get goes straight to Doctors without Borders or PCF. Those actual charities then turn around and give GDQ a cut so GDQ doesn't have to list their finances

      Anonymous

Last time I checked, GDQ is registered as an LLC in... Virginia? I don't know if that precludes them being a 501c.
I think it's pretty suspect that they intentionally withhold "donations" from their sponsors in order to milk donation incentives as much as possible. They have $100,000+ set aside to meeting incentives, which is why you'll suddenly see an incentive that looks like it won't be met jump 10-40k at the last minute.

      Anonymous

I remember an interview once where someone (maybe Mike, but I really don't remember) said they were naive when they transitioned from guys-in-a-garage to actual organization, so they went with a LLC instead. They're paying taxes, so the fact that there's not been an audit is all it takes to prove they're doing things on the level (at least as far as American charity organizations go in the first place).

The Emerald rando run is pretty much the definition of that, it took them an hour to take out the first gym then started to outright ignore the rules they put on the run so they could actually finish in a reasonable time, problem being they still went over estimate and led to a domino effect that threw the entire schedule of to the point where they needed to shitcan multiple runs and started a massive controversy.

i'm scrolling through speedrun twitter and both oldbois and the new crop of runners with pronouns, flags, etc. in their profiles are actively voicing their displeasure with the event

cool matty is basically everywhere defending that last stretch to 3 mil where they decided to fill the time with the audience standing around screaming about donations instead of, you know, a speedrun

          Anonymous

There was KZ_Frew basically pulling the "shut up it worked and it was for charity so you can't complain about anything".

I saw a lot of crap along the lines of people saying the runs don't matter at GDQ and they only attend it to watch the donation tracker go up.

            Anonymous

i've never seen kz frew have a good take, but yeah i saw that tweet. it's kind of nuts to me that there are actually people like that, though. they think that gdq stalling for incentives / holding runs hostage is "hype"

              Anonymous

They think the ends justify the means, which basically means there's no low that GDQ can't go down to that they won't defend.

SGDQ hasn't been a good look for GDQ, treating runners like shit and pulling crap like that, which is pissing off runners, is going to cause them more issues down the line.

They absolutely had to get that minimum of 3 million though, not hitting that is worse than getting nothing for the charity.

i seriously do not recognize 90% of the staff i see in pictures anymore. spike, kffc, jhobbz, and sent are the only people actively acting as a face for the event that i recognize as older volunteers. people like feasel, darkman, blechy, etc. have disappeared over the years.

it does not sound outlandish to me that a lot of the new staff might seriously see gdq as a charity event first and a speedrun event second.

tl;dr coolmatty is an SDA / GDQ OG and probably the one of the biggest factors behind what the event is today, for better or worse. at least, he's always the one defending GDQ's decisions on SDA (when the feedback threads existed) and reddit and twitter more recently.
i don't say this with any malice, but he hasn't made a positive impression with any of his responses over the years. it's always "we're listening" or "we're ready to have a conversation" and then nothing changes. he's a company man.

coolmatty is a dude who acts like he has creative control of the event, but really doesn't. It can't be a good feeling for the guy.

The "every run is shit" is mostly a problem for people here who have watched the marathon for years. Realisticaly the quality of runs isn't something they can do much about, it's either good or not but most normies don't give a shit and just like watching Mario go fast and maybe a couple other games from their childhood.

              Anonymous

Part of the problem is a lot of the runners who were good just don't show up to GDQ because of this and it's just spiraling down.

Like you just don't see people like TMR there anymore.

Keiz and everyone else (Spike, Kungfu, Jhobz) are just Partners of GDQ
They're not actually on Staff that handles that kind of stuff
For reference I'm pretty sure he submitted 3 other runs that all got declined, only his Pokemon one was accepted, probably because they always manage to bring in a lot of money and viewers

      Anonymous

They seriously need to stop including clique "runs" like Yu-Gi-Oh: Forbidden Memories, randomizers, and especially co-op randomizers. Things that are exclusively played by washed-up speedrunners, content farmers, or both.
They're long, boring, and completely fricking incomprehensible to a broader audience no matter how many motherfrickers you have explaining how finding iron boots in Jabu-Jabu's colon is POGGERS, GOD SEED ALERT.

        Anonymous

Randomizers can be decent but most of the ones you see are being run in the worst way possible where it's just not a speedrun and usually you don't see any kind of skillful playing the game.

So are people actually complaining about the event? People who matter I mean, not Ganker shitposters. It definitely felt worse this year despite some really good runs.

      Anonymous

Yeah, but not the extent Ganker shitposters think. People noticed the delays and scheduling issues (the runs that got cut, the reintroduced Pokemon run) and the overambitious incentives and donation begging that made the whole event less "wholesome".

What most normals are NOT complaining about is run quality though, I did a lot to looking around and people enjoyed a lot of the runs that did very poorly here, the OoT stuff in particular was very popular with the general audience to name one example.

        Anonymous

this is my experience too. the incentives were too much, scheduling was shit but no real complaints about the games ran. the stuff we naturally hate is popular with normies

          Anonymous

the way the incentives are designed is just fricking disingenuous. this is how every single incentive goes
          >hold bonus run hostage for like 100k+
          >incentive struggles to get to 75% despite relentless shilling, ruining runs that come immediately before it
          >suddenly multiple thousand dollar donations come in from money earmarked by yetee / twitch / etc. for the explicit purpose of finishing off incentives
they're just trying to milk people as much as possible

            Anonymous

The end of the Mario 64 run was painful, dude set a decent time and all he got was the announcer loudly celebrating that they'd succeeded in forcing a failed incentive to succeed this time.

              Anonymous

This will never change. If your games are in the final stretch it's gonna have an announcer yelling for donations, that's just how it works and they're not gonna change it. They need to have less of that for random incentives mid marathon.

i've started to enjoy watching people get banned in chat for the most innocuous shit more than most of the runs

it was also cringe that the commentator kept saying shit like
              >WOW! THIS IS A NEW GAMES DONE QUICK RECORD!
              >OH MY GOD, THIS IS THE FIRST TIME WE'VE SEEN THIS TRICK IN A MARATHON
like seriously dude, come the frick on. just let the man work.

        Anonymous

Most normal viewers just clap when they see Nintendo games or cute chat, they don't care if the runner is a heckin obnoxious b***h who wasn't even in the top 10 runners.

          Anonymous

          >they don't care if the runner is a heckin obnoxious b***h who wasn't even in the top 10 runners.
I think only a very small percentage of viewers is able to judge if a speedrun is high quality or not, I for sure wouldn't be able to do that. Take any regular game which maybe is not SMB and show the average viewer a run which is +10% of the world record and tell him it is the world record, he'll probably believe it, and so would I. So people will judge runs more by entertainment value of the runner than the actual speedrun skill.

And if you never saw GDQ before 2016 or so you'll think that the runs are still as entertaining as ever, because you haven't been expecting anything else than what was displayed.

            Anonymous

Yeah GDQ's had a fricking drought of games where you can tell it's being played fast and skillfully even if you don't know the game yourself.

Like the JK2 run, that you could tell he was good at it, but a lot of the runs just looked like people playing normally.

              Anonymous

randomizers are the absolute worst for this shit. feels like being a blind man led by the arm, having your handler tell you about everything you literally cannot see.

      Anonymous

Yeah, the whole "canned two runs due to scheduling issues but still sat around stalling for a quarter of the event on top of bringing back a failed incentive at the very end" debacle has spilled over to even twitter and reddit, especially compounded by the half hour sumichu "farewell" immediately followed by them stalling for 10 more minutes to make 3 mil THEN STILL NOT HAVING THE FINAL RUN FRICKING SET UP BY THE TIME THE INCENTIVE WAS MET
When even the people that only acknowledge speedrunning during GDQ are getting uppity about it, you know someone screwed the pooch hard

      Anonymous

Yes. Some runners who didn't have runs in the marathon (and therefore don't have a stake in sucking up to GDQ) are calling out a couple aspects of the marathon, but mostly the sheer fricking thirst for donations and the whole debacle with two runs being canceled and not brought back to fill time while they blatantly stalled for 3 million.

        Anonymous

The worst thing is that maybe you could set the setup time for Superhot VR would have been difficult even though the run was a 15 min etimate.

The run for Bloodstained had the exact same estimate for pokeymans and was a PC run, there's no reason why that would take less to set up than a Switch game.

It does, however, make sense when you factor in that the pokemon runners were friends with a suspiciously absent Keizaron,
