Super Mario Land

Can we finally admit this game sucks? I love the NES trilogy and I wanted to love this one, but it’s almost unplayable. The physics are terrible, the momentum is off, Mario feels like a tank, jump arcs are weird, etc.

No, this game is pure SOVL. Yes, the mechanics are a little weird compared to the NES games, but the environments, THE MUSIC, and just the general vibe are IMO better overall than any Mario prior to 3 on NES and SML 2 on Game Boy.

      >trilogy
There's only two games. The third one was stolen by that homosexual Wario, is not a Mario game, and should never have been called Land III.

I'm tired of all this slander being directed at SML 1 and not 6 Golden Coins. Frick that game. Frick every homosexual who pretends it's le classic. Genuinely the start of Nintendo turning their shit into baby tier difficulty snoozefests for children. homosexual bunny ears can suck my dick too.

Both games are great, and yeah, they are different from one another. Different/easier doesn't have to mean worse. Fun transcends all that.

Went and played through this. Performance can be a bit rough and some of the models don't look great but it's still an improvement over the original because it controls much better.

This game is kind of cool because it runs at 60 fps before they realized that that produced horrible smear on the DMG Gameboy's screen. Obviously on emulator or GBA you'd never know that was an issue but it was and that was why they stopped doing 60 fps on Gameboy games after the very early releases.

      >they stopped doing 60 fps on Gameboy games
No they didn't. Most Gameboy games run at 60fps (with the usual Nintendo slowdown in some cases). I can't think of a single well-regarded Gameboy game that's not 60fps.

The physics are just different, you have to get used to them.
I really like the various themes of the game, they are very creative and I still have the musics of the game in mind.

I played it a couple of days ago. Great game. It's like an alternate dimension of the Mario games. Same with the sequel.

It wasn't developed by the same team that did SMB, but rather the people who made arcade Mario Bros.

moronic homosexual contrarians will say it's good. But SML2 is genuinely up there with the main Mario's just for it's open ended nature

No this is one of my favorites and actually the only Mario game I've beaten. It's quick, smooth, and feels totally unique. It's also short so you can beat it in a casual sitting. I love the music too.

I understand that the limitations of the gb would probably require a more restricted, less fluid physics system, I also like sml1 for what's it worth, but it does seem to have an issue with midair direction change either having lag or randomly locking up. specifically there is a certain jump that will completely lock mario's movement in the air, I think it gets triggered when you ever do a jump the moment you reverse your momentum holding B, that fricked me up a lot in my playthrough.

      Anonymous

i doublechecked, you will be locked in place when you jump at a change in direction with or without holding b. wonder if it's a programming/cpu issue or an intentional choice.

    Wrong.
Land stuck with the fundamentals of what worked with SMB 1 and didn't try to change them or layer new 'features' on top of them like all subsequent games.

The fact that it's a little weird, little rough and doesn't really play like a "mario game" is what makes it so fun and charming. It's something different.
