The boss theme is especially neutered. Lacks that punch and feels too soft. Same problem plagued the Kirby Superstar boss theme in the remake. Guess the SNES has a sound front that can't be replicated.

No anon, this is one of those rare few times where a remake is NOT soulless. I know all you ever see is people calling everything soulless, and 9 times out of 10 for remakes, its usually right, but this is one of those very rare times where its not true, I guess you really thought it could never happen. The character designs are loyal, the battle system seems to be intact and possibly even expanded upon, the artstyle is a fusion of new plus the old, the proper music from the original is here just remixed and made by the same composer, and while the hud is different, at least that isn't enough to drop the game entirely because of it. Might be an adjustment, but most here would say its worth giving a chance for.
Do you see this? THIS is what people wanted when they asked for a proper remake of FF7. THIS is called "keeping what was good and worked, and adding to it", instead of abandoning it all to try something drastically different that nobody wanted. THIS is so rare its hard to find another example of it, and THAT is why most other remakes are soulless.

The reality is most developers (be it for games or for software in general) hate migration projects. And Remakes are basically just migration projects for games, though maybe a bit more grand.
When you remake something 1-1, you don't get any new problems to solve nor do you get to express yourself in any meaningful way. So, if you're passionate about MAKING games, it's a waste of your limited time on this earth to just REMAKE something that's already around
there have been cases made for remakes. look at the system shock remake. after enough advancements have been made, it may be worth it to go back.

Chain gauge and the limit break meter are new content. They seem to want to add new stuff, so I assume that we will get at least slightly more. I would hope that they would go ahead and add in the missing Star Hill content. It was supposed to be a more fleshed out dungeon and have a boss at the end, instead of just giving you a Star Piece for really no reason. It would be really great if we get a Post Game too, or maybe a Hard Mode. Maybe make Bowser more useful because of his ability to inflict Fear on enemies.
Super Mario RPG is a day long endeavor unless you rush it, which is way more than I can say for Link's Awakening.

He may be weak but he grows throughout the game, and he's got good moves early on until you bench him. Hell, maybe he'll get new moves or maybe a limit break with him that makes him worth keeping.
Exactly. Mallow is a character that gets better the more you use him, whereas Geno is mostly a noobie crutch who's good when you get him but gets outmoded pretty quickly in most circumstances later into the game.
I love mallow but he becomes useless once you get Bowser/Peach/Geno. Sadly that means he's not even useful at the end of his own storyarc so you have a different party without him resolving his crisis.
I use Mallow for that part and there's a part in the boss fight where Dodo carres him aside for a 1v1. Does that not happen if Mallow's not in the frontlines?
Dodo always picks up the middle character, regardless of who it is.

I thought that was the name of that clowns in the Booster Tower, it's actually the name of the cake.
I was thinking here and they don't really need to do anything to add Punchnello and the Cake into Smithy gang. All they needed to do was to add scene, with some kind of Goo/sugar/nanomachine thing that covered the cake, and then it became alive because of it. As for Punchnello, just add a scene saying he's going to bomb the town under Smithy orders and that's it.
Then at the end, add the goo thing and Punchnello was robots for the fights and we are done.
I actually prefer them to be just random weirdos as opposed to Smithy's henchmen. All of his goons are living weapons, so they don't really fit the theme either.

Surely this choice was made because the look of Peach's castle was redefined permanently as of SM64 which SMRPG predates.
Not a fan of the music in the trailer. A lot of old digital classics lose detail and nuance in an all orchestrated arrangement.
Most remakes are farmed out to incompetent, but inexpensive studios who only care about the paycheck they're getting from the project.

The models from the original Mario RPG are already the definition of "souless". They're 3D models made in a crude way from primitive shapes, it's an attempt to apply a tool of technical use in "art", but when there was still no condition for that. The models just aren't totally soulless because artists had to clean them up when they turned them into sprites for the SNES and in the process they did a little tweaking, but not much.
I know there's nostalgia for old renders, but it's basically just that, nostalgia.
This made me remember I saw someone making their own SMRPG remake a few months ago, with one of the things shown for it being the final boss fight
