They completely removed most of the mechanics that made the game...well, a game. Adding a map to the castle level. Highlighting all interactables on the scavenger hunt of the Wild West. Making the martial arts tournament incredibly easy to the point that you will never see many of the moves unless you sit and tank damage for a while.
And they also bogged the translation quite poorly. It looks decent enough, the art-style is alright. But these decisions were very poor.

The real issue is Bowser being a direct 1:1 of his current design, just slightly smaller. Peach looks okay, but it seems like her shoulders are bunched up or something, her dress is a little too big I think.

SMRPG is a good babby's first RPG but it's reputation has been massively inflated over time by the people who had it as their first RPG experience. By no means a bad game, but combat's trivial, leveling is mindless, and the story doesn't really have much going on. It's not some timeless masterpiece, it's essentially a version of Final Fantasy Mystic Quest that isn't shit.
