Super Mario RPG remake CRUSHES original games SOVL

There is no doubt about that. The remake is not good enough. like changing Mack’s name, Yaridovich’s name, Shy Away’s name, making regular timed attacks do damage to all enemies, calling Psychopath “Thought Peek” - It’s just one of those things.

thats the only change that i think wasnt really necessary. its a cute reference and actually seems like a name instead of just a title. everything else in op's post is an improvement.

Just don't buy it, be vocal on Twitter about it, idk. It pisses me off too, I love smrpg, but all we can do is not buy it and be vocal. I don't use social media so that's our for me, I only vote withy pocket book.

        “Thought Peek” doesn’t make sense.

          Anonymous

It's a better description of what the skill actually does. It peeks at the enemy's thoughts. Boom. "Psychopath" on the other hand, is a complete nonsense name for that skill.

"Thought Peek" is also a better translation of the Japanese, so if you care about accuracy....

            Anonymous

Clearly someone at localisation fricked up and thought psychopath meant "psychological pathway"

People wouldn't even care about the name "thought peek" if it was the original name. Shitty translations get through and when companies try to fix those mistakes in remakes, people get mad screaming "MUH SOVL". That being said, some of the name changes were just unnecessary. like:

Honestly, I like that they fixed the Woolsey screw ups, but obviously it was always going to be a damn if you do, damn if you don't situation
I'm gonna give Woolsey a pass for Yaridovich, Speardovich sounds moronic

They should have called him “Spearheader” since that’s what he does.

                Anonymous

Doesn't sound any better and the -ovich is actually intended in the Japanese version, it's meant to be a slavic name ending
                https://www.mariowiki.com/Speardovich
The German handling sounds good even if it loses the -ovich

              Anonymous

Yaridovich isn't really wrong considering a Yari is a type of spear and the one that the character actually looks like. It's arguably more accurate than "Speardovich" since calling it a spear may be more readily understood but is less specific. It'd be like renaming a character called Katanaguy into Swordguy.

ahhh that might explain why Woolsey went with that then

for japanese audiences, it was always that direct and gay of a name. by translating it to "spear" (or "sword" in your hypothetical example) it lets english audiences experience the same cheesy naming. its intentionally bad. woolsey tried to save us from cringe. nintendo said "no. you're going to cringe, and you're going to like it".

What the frick? Do enemies have 5x more health to compensate?

It's a good change. The splash damage does nothing and it's just to help finish off nearly dead enemies to speed things up. Besides Culex (who's been made much harder in the remake) it's always been an insanely easy game.

        Anonymous

Culex has been made "harder" because you can't just stock 20+ Pick Me Ups anymore. I used to kill every crystal for fun but that's going to be much harder here without Peach spamming recovery and revive magic (which I've always dislikes playing heavily with Peach). Oh, and also because single target magic can be blocked now and it hits much harder if you don't

I was mainly referring to his postgame rematch but yeah the Lazy Shell + Peach cheese is no more. He's not the hardest superboss ever but without using the broken equipment like Lazy Shell/Safety Ring/Attack Scarf or Red Essences it's a solid challenge.

i hold what i assume is the relatively rare distinction of having played ted woolsey's two most notable translated games in both japanese and english and while i think he did kind of a shoddy job with ff6, i think he did pretty good on smrpg. even in ff6 woolsey largely didn't commit any real sins, i just dislike his sense of taste. with smrpg his style works really well because japanese smrpg would have been pretty esoteric if translated 1:1. and a lot of the changes i'm hearing about in the remake just seem to arbitrarily change things, not for accuracy (which would have been ok morally, just not optimal practically) but just to make new names for no reason, many of which are just outright worse

granted, i can't argue objectively that "snifster" is worse than "snifit," but i dunno

I also played it in EN and JP. There are a few places where Woolsey fumbles due to presumably not having a NoA reference sheet on his desk for stock Mario localizations (like how we got the Noknok Shell weapon from ノコノコ), plus a few straight up flubs, but yeah, overall I think Woolsey really did a pretty good job on SMRPG. Some of his translations are pretty clever given the text character limitations he sometimes had to work with. For example, although the Donkey Kong doppelganger lost its funny name, "Don't confuse me with someone else!" is a pretty good stand-in for the standard fiction disclaimer joke in the JP script given iirc he had to stay on one line.

A brief history of how things unfolded:
    >The word "soul" exists and has strong coherent meaning as it relates to video games
    >Zoomers get unreasonably upset whenever they see it because it touches a sore spot: they don't feel an emotional or cultural attachment to video games, they don't understand the soul or artistry or heart of a work. they only treat games as checklist items to be completed, because they lack any ability to perceive soul themselves
    >border skirmishes occur as zoomers boil and seethe and rage at people using the word soul to effectively describe the differences in games in ways they can't grasp or articulate
    >finally they get tired of always being on the losing side
    >begin using the word "soul" incessantly themselves, in increasingly wrong and inaccurate ways
    >hope they can just strip the word of meaning through sheer numbers
    >third generation zoomers arrive
    >have no clue what anything means at all anymore, so "soul" is just a meaningless buzzword to them they babble more often than punctuation
    >you are here

Localization woes are an EOP problem only, the Japanese version is extremely faithful to the original script, and even then you could argue they're just doing a better job by doing a more accurate translation, Woolsey's version is full of inconsistencies and nonsense madeup shit, you just like it because you grew up with it.

The criticisms about the new systems and easy mode trivializing the already low difficulty of the original while neglecting to add a hard mode or a more robust post-game besides a few boss rematches, are perfectly valid though.

Woolsey's scripts stand the test of time, only questioned by neckbe/a/rds. Only people with autism care about this kind of translation style.

            Anonymous

Those of us in the west are largely helpless. The reality is it's not the ESRB or console manufacturers causing most of the problems with censorship. There may be fringe cases but 90% of the time the real problem is CERO. In order to sell a game in Japan today you have to adhere to some pretty draconian standards. So for any game made in Japan it means that it's CERO, not the ESRB, that's deciding on the content on our behalf since they're the more restrictive body. People talk about how strict Australia is but that's relatively localized to the point that unless you're actually in Australia you don't have to deal with it. But we effectively do have CERO in the west because so many games are Japanese.

Many of Woolsey's jokes/changes are definitely cringey and unnecessary. But on the other hand fan translations from Japanese are really fricking dull and robotic. And i doubt the original scripts were like that, there just needs to be effort taken to convert the culturally-specific humor/subtext to a Western context.

I'll be honest with you, I powered through most of these, but you'll mainly want Mario/Peach/Geno, get the super suit if you haven't got it already, and just work on maxing out the triple move gauge.

so how many of you beat smithy again after beating all the postgame bosses?

I did. The post-game bosses characters that didn't already had a cutscene are added to the scenes, neat little change. I'm disappointed Smithy didn't have a post-game boss fight change, the bosses already could already be melted in the original and they melt even harder now

  14. 6 months ago

Them changing the names isn't the problem, moreso their execution of certain scenes that don't seem to have the same charm, like when Mario gets a star, or when Geno possesses the doll. Even when you go back to Rose Town after beating Bowyer, there's this necessarily weird magic animation that plays.

You reflexively hate remakes and you'll always have the original - and don't give me the whole "WELL THEY SHOULD MAKE THE ORIGINAL AVAILBLE ON THE ESHOP OR THE NSO" because you'd b***h about that too and just play your original copy or (more likely) pirate it.
