people's brains weren't fried from constant social media usage back then, and video games weren't as accessible as now.
>and video games weren't as accessible as now.
That's a funny way to say "I don't have to wait until Christmas for new vidya", anon.
Or maybe it's because Wonder is dumbed down for literal toddlers and boring as frick
It's a game for kids playing their first Mario game, not 50+ year old grandpas who grew up with the Lost Levels
>defending it
Grim
You stopped being the core audience after 4-8 year cycles. People are always popping out kids and Mario games don't expect you to be the frame-counting king of a Kaizo Mario game or pixel perfect movement required Mario Maker 2 course being challenged to infinitum. You either enjoy the games for what they are to the mass market or hang your hat and look for something else.
I don't know what you expect but their design philosophy doesn't revolve around you. Best rip off that bandage even if it's years overdue.
>pretending there is nothing in between a game for infants and Kaizo Mario
Grim
Have you even played the game or did you watch a walkthrough?
>people's brains weren't fried from constant social media usage
This
>people's brains weren't fried from constant social media usage back then
Sure, but even if they weren't, it's still just another NSMB level pack at the end of the day.
this
I always imagine there's some ADHD-riddled zoomer behind those "current year/I am forgotten" threads with <1yo games, because everything has to be updated over time like it's some competitive multiplayer/MMO/gacha thing now
Sunshine was 3D, Wonder is not meant to compete or replace with 3D mario.
2D Mario pretty much always outsells 3D Mario, with the exception of Odyssey.
It surprised me as well when I found it.
But 2D mario is not replacing 3D mario, so its not much comparison.
people are tired of Mario gimmick shit
>people everywhere need to talk about things constantly or else it's proof they're forgotten!!
I used to think the same way but there's 7 billion people on the planet, I think the real issue is nowadays people would rather talk about bad games, making this game good
i-if you dont talk about a game 24 7, THAT MEANS IT WAS BAD AND YOU DIDNT REALLY ENJOY IT!
I skipped it. Is it just NSMBU with more new gimmicks?
Nah. It's genuinely an improvement over NSMB in every way. It actually kind of ruins NSMB in retrospect because of how half assed and awful those games feel comparatively.
It's a 2D Mario game, the only talking points are the power-ups and Daisy helping fight King Koopa. Not much to discuss after clearing the game.
This game is literally just NSMBU with shallow gimmicks. Nintendo slapped a new coat of paint on the Assets and all the normies got fooled into thinking it was a fresh new direction for the Super Mario Bros. series KEK.
Fricking morons.
Every
Time
>This game is literally just NSMBU with shallow gimmicks. Nintendo slapped a new coat of paint on the Assets
None of that is true, even the gravity is different and less floaty than NSMBU
>Even Sunshine had a larger cultural impact
You don't even believe that.
>Even Sunshine had a larger cultural impact
Not really, everyone just sees it as the worst Mario game.
What did you expect from NSMB 13?
>13
>literally only 4 games and dlc
>muh cultural impact
Do you ever stop to think how much of a fricking loser you are? have a nice day before morning
this area sucked an incredible amount of ass. Every trial, wonder seed, and level was complete shit
Where is this? I've almost beaten the game and not seen it
fluff fluff peaks, iirc
Oh right I left that world early cause I was bored of it, makes sense
nobody remembers any of the 2D mario games, people will say they're good and move on *plaps his wiener on your eye*
Wonder was a weird game.
I didn't think much of it at launch but I replayed it a few weeks back and enjoyed it a lot more than I did the first time
Mario Wonder is unironically the TikTok of video games
Every level like every video is a new gimmick but as soon as you move on to the next level you completely forget what you just played just like if you scrolled up on a TikTok you forgot what you just watched
I think Wonder would be a million times better if the level design changed during gameplay like the first level
The first level is the best and most memorable because of the gimmick but is barely used throughout the game
Also the downgraded multiplayer in comparison to Wii with the spazed out camera
Really hope the next 2D Mario fixes the multiplayer
Well said
I think this is quite possibly the most succinct and intelligent analysis of this wonderfully forgotten game. If I could I would like and retweet (re-chan?) your post a million times!
How many times are you going to reply to yourself?
I grew up with DS and Wii and the multiplayer is a complete and utter horrible downgrade
>Barely any vertical levels and themes in the game are horribly designed
>No more player boost jump
>No bubble only a 5 second window where you will die
>Camera only focuses on player one at ALL TIMES but can change if that player dies which means the camera will jolt back and forth
It’s actually insane
I’m so glad I didn’t buy a Switch and just emulated this
There are people that play 2D Mario for the simultaneous multiplayer? I turned off anything involving contact with other human beings as soon as I could.
>There are people that play 2D Mario for the simultaneous multiplayer?
Just Wii U babbies
I dunno wiiu had that xenoblade game you used pad to control your resources, I liked that one
>there are people who have friends
so much seethe
Multiplayer Wii NSMB is fun as hell if you have friends but I didnt care for the shit with ghosts in Wonder. The game is easy enough without needing to be revived when you die.
>>No more player boost jump
>>No bubble only a 5 second window where you will die
only focuses on player one at ALL TIMES but can change if that player dies which means the camera will jolt back and forth
These are sounding less like problems with the game and more like a "you" problem.
The 3D world and 3D land games (3ds) were like that already.
Hamfisted gimmicks is Platformer Mario's only trademark.
Game's sold like 12 million copies in 4 months so forgotten's a bit of a stretch, but it's also just barely enough of a shake-up from convention to be more than "just another 2D Mario". That said, Mario doesn't really drive conversation so much as it does long-term, slow burn market appeal. Nintendo can drop one of these and it'll still be selling quietly, but decently 5 years later.
>sales
Kek
Yes, using sales numbers isn't a good tell of quality but it is proof of the game's success.
>Every level like every video is a new gimmick but as soon as you move on to the next level you completely forget what you just played just like if you scrolled up on a TikTok you forgot what you just watched
>I think Wonder would be a million times better if the level design changed during gameplay like the first level
You're describing the 3D World philosophy
2D Mario hasn't been culturally impactful since the early 90s, it just shows up and does its thing because it already earned its wings.
Good rest in shit
Can we finally agree now on the fact that there was no reason for the developers to cuck Yoshi fans by making him invincible? There would have been nothing wrong with making him a "hard mode" character who dies in one hit but is still accessible for kids due to having the flutter jump in addition to his eating mechanics basically being a built-in powerup, something that the other characters lack. Literally no one gives a shit about Nabbit so why not transfer Yoshi's knockback over to him? A knockback mechanic is already kiddy glove-ish enough as is so what's the point in outright invincibility? What small child desperately needs, or would even have fun with, not being able to completely interact with enemies?
>There would have been nothing wrong with making him a "hard mode" character
There's no way to make Yoshi a hard mode character without nerfing his abilities to an insane degree.
Making him vulnerable to damage is the only nerf that's required to make him a hard mode character. If you are halfway cognizant, most of the levels are not hectic to the point where doing a no-damage run is unreasonably difficult and as someone that used Yoshi for most of my run though the game, I only got hit whenever I was being careless. That's why I believe that simply making Yoshi vulnerable to enemies would make him a perfectly fine hard mode character by exceedingly young target demographic standards because the wealth of default tools he has would come at the cost of forcing you to not maneuver like a bull in a China shop through these already simple to the point of braindead levels.
Making Yoshi a playable character was both a courtesy and a means to make a casual mode for younger players. They didn't HAVE to be usable characters but it was a subversion from making them items.
My 2 year old that wants to play with me. He could use yoshi and not just immediately eat all my lives. Until I couldn't stand his constant replying the first level to activate the wonder seed.
>My 2 year old that wants to play with me.
I'm glad that this is Nintendo's audience
>2 year old
How was little guy handling the controller?
He does play with a joycon, not so good with a pro controller. His favorite is Mario kart, the auto go setting is a real help. Steering he can do holding down a go button, not so much.
Impressive, I didn't hold a controller until maybe when I 6 or 7 and I didn't really start playing video games on my own until I was 9
It's going to be very interesting to see my kids grow up with 11 consoles from 7 console gens and two handheld ones
Kids are great, just remember to take em outside too. This game is one I deleted from the switch. Watch as they play you'll notice changes and when it's time to get rid of one. He can play Mario kart and make his way around Mario rpg dungeons but this one would make him lose his shit and button mash soon as he hit a wonder seed.
I hope he grows into a fine man anon, it's nice to know that there are some anons who want to make their kids have great childhoods.
I hope I can share stories about kids of my own one day
I liked Yoshi since when I had gotten near finishing the game and some of my friends were still going through it I could play as Yoshi with the Jet Run badge on and just do dumb shit while running laps around them
You deserve to be cucked for being a Yoshi fan
I care about Nabbit and was disappointed he's just easy mode
yeah nintendo shouldn't have forced the invincibility easy mode thing for yoshi and nabbit
yoshi would be fine as is with having flutter jump + eating in exchange for no powerups and dying in one hit
nabbit would be fine for having death in one hit, and no powerups in exchange for letting him wear more badges at once maybe
the "easy mode" should have been an optional toggle or tied to a unique badge like how in 3D world nintendo made a buffed cat powerup for easy mode
Honestly just lack luster. Wonder Seeds provide only visual flair, gameplay usage is minimal most of the time. That's one thing but Wonder Seeds often make the game a total cake walk. I'd skip them if I could but they're required to progress. I dropped it somewhere in world 3.
>the new elephant, drill, and bubble powers sucked
>no flying power up
>the wonder flowers stop any kind of momentum the level has
>terrible "search for the invisible coins" levels
>severe lack of interesting bosses. The final Bowser boss was cool though
>the badges are either gimmicks or core movement abilities they removed to make into badges
Wonder wasn't "bad", but I haven't really had any desire to revisit it after beating it once.
the bubble flower is only good for getting an extra thing to jump off but theres no fricking point to doing that because upper ledges are usually blocked by an invisible ceiling or theres just coins
I really like drill and bubble, though the former is very situational. Elephant is...practical. Not super exciting, but practical.
The elephant powerup basically served as a tanooki leaf without the flying.
its nice to hit stuff right infront of you but being a big fat heavy guy doesnt really do any good
Drill was pretty cool though, alot of little secrets in levels (just coins lol) accessible with it
Some aspects are cool like automated ducking and being able to dash over larger gaps.
I might have a second playthrough like I did NSMB1, in which I'll probably see if I can clear a course by cheesing the Bubble Flower.
None of those power ups sucked in the slightest, what the frick is wrong with you?
>>the new elephant, drill, and bubble powers sucked
Elephant was just a flightless raccoon with extra girth without spinning involved. Drill wasn't even bad and Bubble was just adding a little Bubble Bobble in Mario.
The frick are you smoking?
Like, I can get if players don't like the aesthetic of the elephant, I get it -- but it's far from a useless let alone a sucky power-up.
Had as much impact as NSMB games
everything goes by too quickly now so basically nothing will have a cultural impact. Stuck Culture. only thing that stuck is bussin and no cappin and fanum taxin
gta 5 and rdr2 still have cultural impact
elden ring does too
tlou1 and 2 still talked about
most modern nintendo games do not have long shelf lives. mk8 and maybe animal crossing new horizons but i think that ones dead now too
This. It's almost like Nintendo is an outdated company stuck on makeing superfluous TikTok-level toys instead of experiences that actually last like the rest of the AAA land-space is doing.
holy sneed
>modern AAA
>lasting
How many failed GAAS experiments have come and gone again? Never mind all the annual landfill shit that goes bad after its one year shelf life like sports titles and Call of Duty.
>How many failed GAAS experiments have come and gone again?
At least those games had more of messages and impact then the bing bing wahoo sloppa
Yeah, if "our cynical attempts to squeeze even more money out of consumers is hitting a wall and AAA is becoming unsustainable" counts as a message.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 had cultural impact.
TikTok horny slop
Yes, as an example of how NOT to make a video game <3
>not in mario kart
>smash trash is dead and being more unpopular every year
Not even close.
xenoblade 2 had an impact in my pants
>gta 5 and rdr2 still have cultural impact
>elden ring does too
>tlou1 and 2 still talked about
None of these have had any kind of cultural impact. Cultural impact implies they changed the course of gaming in some way but the amount of GTA and souls clones has reduced over the years while tlou only changed how Sony made games and is only ever relevant when they announce a new game and more often than not now people simply laugh at how few original games it has.
>forced soul Anon
He was right
CHADorced CHADoul
Holy based analysis. Well said, I tip my hat to you.
This but unironically
Eating shit without vomiting on live tv is a cultural impact, yeah.
It was literally just a $20 nsmb reskin sold for $60. If it weren't for the brand nobody would've given a shit to begin with.
>Sunshine had a larger cultural impact
no, weird gamecube kid
it's stupid but the elephant has seriously affected my enjoyment of the game, it looks dumb and it isn't particularly fun to use but you have to use it because it's the feature powerup and most optimization requires it. same thing with the cat suit.
Yeah it ruins the point of playing as Toadette for me because she turns into an uggo elephant, they already had the drill mushroom as the new powerup, could have just stuck with that.
It's catering to fat ADHD troony's, it's pretty niche.
Wonder mode will fry a kids brain, no one wants to be an elephant, and the twist on -save the PRINCE- along with the troony flag colors appeals to no one.
This. Its subliminal SJW messaging made it flop. #SuperMarioWOKEder
Add to that
Mario has a new voice that sounds strangely homosexual
New bubble power turns him into a pink bubble blowing pixie with it's movements
>Wonder mode will fry a kids brain,
They're just glorified bonus sections, like how DKC required you to use bonus levels to 100% clear them. It's not that deep.
>No one wants to be an elephant
You're just taking offense that the power-up's form isn't keeping Mario and friend's faces the same. If Elephant was just costume accessories you wouldn't be raising a fuss.
>and the twist on -save the PRINCE-
Now I know you didn't play the game. You're not saving the Prince, you're reclaiming his castle.
How is reclaiming his home not saving him? Don't worry guys is not threat of rape it's just homelessness for him and poisoned land for all his little flower subjects. Guess peach had it worse, she was just promised a new kingdom in exchange for marriage.
Wonder mode is not like dkc, bonus levels some go full on rainbow rave with everything wiggling, spouting, singing, flashing and whatever other random shit they could squeeze in, sometimes being mandatory not optional.
>bonus levels some go full on rainbow rave with everything wiggling, spouting, singing, flashing and whatever other random shit they could squeeze in, sometimes being mandatory not optional.
This, its literally the same thing as Elsagate and grooms our children but it's okay to these shittendo eaters because haha funne bing bing wahoo!!!
because it's clearly avoiding the reverse damsel trope you were trying to complain about. they wanted another little buddy for you like cappy.
>How is reclaiming his home not saving him?
Because he's not the one who's captive. Losing your house is not the same as someone holding you hostage. Not even Mr. Fantastic has that much reach.
Not to mention it's Bowser using one of the game's MacGuffins to do nasty shit, it's not just the Prince being homeless that's the problem, it's Bowser escalating to do worse which is the call to action.
EXPOSED - Super Mario WOKE-der is the ELSAGATE of gaming!
>Mario has a new voice that sounds strangely homosexual
He's voiced by an SJW who rapes kids!!!!!!
Glad more and more channers are exposing the hidden wokenesses of Super Mario WOKEder
Found the wokeists! This is only the beginning of the slippery slope of exposing degeneracy to out kids! Just like BG3's BEASTIALITY and GTA6's Black person TWERK TIKTOKS!!!
>Found the wokeists!
For exposing a lie? The Prince is your traveling companion with dialogue and everything. If you're gonna be angry about a game, at least be angry about the parts that are real.
>He's voiced by an SJW who rapes kids!!!!!!
It's bad I can't tell if your joking
here's your (You) moron
Sunshine was a flagship game
NSMB(wonder) is just their slop series
This. Wonder is just sloppy slop sloppa and emblematic of Nintendo's modern TikTok-isms in game development
I think it's a wonderful game and I had a lot of fun playing it
Suck it nerds
It made funny fanart
There's nothing to discuss with 2d Marios. They are solid and fun and the last stage is balls to the wall hard. And that's it. I had fun.
>the last stage is balls to the wall hard
Maybe it's just my experience but I had an easy time with it
Everyone was going off about the invisible section but it was piss easy. I guess I have a habit of twirling constantly for no reason and that helps that section but I've seen a few random people play that literally never twirl at all.
I still havent beaten it 🙁
Why? the game is fairly easy unless you're a kid, journalist, or just suck at video games
Thats how I felt but I havent beaten that last really hard badge level. Everything else was pretty easy though.
It doesnt help that i dont care and havent touched the game in months
>balls hard
homie they give you so many fricking checkpoints and each section is incredibly easy since you have to go out of your way to get hit by hazards
Yeah post your ss and I might engage.
K
if you are comparing to an era where everything was fine, you aren't going to win. everything is shit now and capitalism is eating everyone's soul. you cant ever go back to what was good.
>Capitalism
More like government funded wokeism.
Don't forget that ESG money comes from your 401ks and taxes
Mfers always wanna blame "capitalism" and not the actual people who are responsible for running our society into the ground. Probably because if you look at the people who have the most control over politics, finance and the media you will come to an uncomfortable realization
The funny thing too is that their line of thought has more in common with Communism
It's just the new NSMB. No one cares about traditional 2D Mario. It hasn't been relevant for 30 years, and even with the handholdy bullshit they put in this one they didn't capture attention.
This game isn't unique or memorable in any sense. It's fun, sure, but nothing incredible. Just more Mario slop for the masses.
I hope they bring back some of the enemies atleast, they're pretty cool.
I don't think anyone from odyssey got brought back into something more recent like mario party so it seems pretty unlikely.
>This game isn't unique or memorable in any sense.
It made Daisy playable and it was the first non-reskinned 2D Mario-and-power-ups included platformer where the Princess wasn't kidnapped. Not to mention it has 3 new power-ups under its belt, had a ton of reasonable callbacks to games like the Classic Mario Bros. and Mario 2 all while having a last minute homage to the movie. Further mention goes to having one of the most frustrating 100% completion requirements under its belt compared to even NSMBWII
It was memorable, you just don't want it to be rememebered.
>comes out
>critical acclaim
>people want more
Meanwhile
>Sunshine comes out
>criticized even at launch
>3D All Stars made more people rightfully shit on it
>people would rather have Galaxy 3, Odyssey 2, or something like Bowser's Fury
>forgotten
>still topping famitsu charts
It's literally just "New-New Super Mario Bros".
Who cares? I've already played that game 20 years ago.
>cultural impact
NOTHING has cultural impact now
before there was 15mins of fame
now it's like 15microseconds of fame
has nothing to do with quality, it has to do with today's culture
its kino
Side scrollers can’t really have impact the way they had in the 3rd/4th console gens. Back then they represented the best that developers could do with the limited hardware. Normies don’t want to run in a straight line when other games give them more freedom
it was fun
Is it weird that I think Mario U and Luigi U are just way better mechanically than it?
It's really one of the weaker Mario games after you have seen all the Wonder effect surprises. Speedruns are not even fun because they skip the Wonder Flowers. I unironically put more time into Sonic Superstars
Oh not at all. It's definitely a vastly superior game than most 2D Mario games, the only ones beating it are 3, World and NSMBU with U only snatching the win because of the bonus content and DLC, the main game on the other hand is mediocre with very little variety level to level.
I really liked this game, it was nice to see all the new stuff like the hoppos or those weasel that run away when they see you
And the wonder seed were a genuinely fun gimmick, it's like every level was "touch fuzzy, get dizzy"
This and Metroid Dread so far are the games I liked on the switch the most, it honestly deserves more attention than breath of the wild
