If they ever make a proper paper mario 3 I will go back and try these once I am done replaying that. Otherwise its a hard bitterness pass. Closest I got to buying a switch was brief period between hearing oragami king be shilled and seeing a video of it

That isn't going to happen. The mario and luigi series is not responsible for what happened to paper mario, not by any means possible. Refusing to play a game that you'd probably enjoy is a very strange way to vent your anger.

Bug Fables is Paper Mario 3 in every way.

OP here. I got the game for Christmas when I was 15. I remember it more vividly than I remember last Christmas.

I don't care what jannie says, this isn't a retro game. The PS2 and GBA are still pretty new.

I feel that way too but 20 years isn't yesterday anon. When is the last time you bought a new shrinkwrapped cartridge game in a cardboard box?

Last week for the 3DS or arguably Switch games.

One of my all time favorite GBA games. I wonder if Mario will ever be allowed to be that good again. Had such a weird vibe, really liked how alien it felt and I have not one memory of being bored at any point.

Best part of Mario series is seeing the brothers in new, weird locations. This game basically did what the new Wonder game set out to do and create a fresh world with some familiar elements, just like Super Mario Bros did. Its a shame the series kinda floundered after the 3rd game, or arguably right after this one. Im still pissed the sequel went for the babies instead of Wario and Waluigi.

      Anonymous

      >floundered after the 3rd game

But Bowser's Inside Story was great! Especially with Yoko Shimomura doing the soundtrack. That entire "final boss fight within a final boss fight" sequence had a real Kingdom Hearts feel to it.

I agree that Partners in Time didn't live up to the first one though, Wario and Waluigi would have been a way better angle.

Still the best in the series.

Dream Team would've been a worthy successor if it weren't for those shitty giant battles.
Playing the SSS remake recently reminded me of how good things used to be, just bros exploring unknown territory with no gimmicks, even though it felt oddly slow like DT did.

You sure Chunder tried to do that? It looks more like NSMB with a different color palette than anything, right down to the poplins being arab toads. It's more like familiar elements with a dash of unfamiliarity.

It's what the devs claimed they wanted to do, make something new to the player like Super Mario Bros was on release, but i agree it just feels like a new paint job. Mario & Luigi did a much better job of being "out-there" in weirdness.

It's pretty good. I finally beat it for the first time this year after getting filtered by it various times over the years. It's short, but it's a pretty fun rpg.

Fawful defined the classic "lol so random" humor of the 2000s.

Which is odd, considering it seems like they were going with a bad engrish translation for him.

Hey, watch the historical revisionism. The "lol so random" classic humor of the 2000s had already been defined. Fawful was just a validation of the culture that had been brewing online for several years to that point.

When you played Superstar Saga brand new, it was like, "Awesome! The Internet is finally bleeding into real life! I wonder what'll come from this! Time to check SomethingAwful!"

      How naive we were 🙂

All the abilities had areas where they needed to be used and fitted with the same abilities used in battle. If it were conceptual a player wouldn't have to figure out that they needed to use a specific action.

        [...]
That anon isn't really revising anything there. What he meant by defined is up to interpretation, this seems like semantics.

Clarifications are necessary given the fact that zoomers misdate/miscredit everything from the 2000s. One of them might read that post and then make a 40-minute video essay about how Fawful invented the practice of setting your LJ mood to "i liek pie xD"

Literally every piece of media previewing or reviewing SSS described Fawful as a new baddie that talks in badly translated engrish like in old NES games. I dont think the lolrandumb humor was even really a self aware concept at this point. The only pop culture character that really defined it/represented it was Gir in Invader Zim and that was mostly when the show was already canceled.

to coincide with the release of super mario rpg remake. are they trying to tell us something? more mario & luigi RPGs in the future? i know the original devs went bankrupt but who knows.

      Anonymous

The devs went bankrupt exactly because Mario & Luigi was doing so poorly. I don't know how a red flag could be any more obvious.
Both Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario are in a really bad spot right now, if Nintendo ever dare to develop a new Mario RPG (and by Nintendo I mean a third party company in partnership with Nintendo), they should probably try a new formula.

        Anonymous

        >exactly because Mario & Luigi was doing so poorly
Partly because they made two remakes for an effectively dead console. A new M&L for Switch would've been a better metric, but alas that's not what they did

      >i know the original devs went bankrupt but who knows.
For some reason they remade Bowser's Inside Story for the 3DS in 2019, and it was the worst selling mario game of all time

I love this game but I hate playing it.
I like the humour, the music, the platforming, but frick me the tedious constant grind battles and not knowing how much HP things have and the boss battles just go on and on and on and on and on Jesus Christ

      >the boss battles just go on and on and on and on and on
i have no idea what you're talking about, I don't even know what the bosses in the second half the of the game do because they die in one turn with Great Force and some bros attacks

I played Mario And Luigi Paper Jam recently. It was pretty good. But I only play like 3 games a year, so maybe my standards are low.

As for the OG, the controls are VERY shit. Even with the remake the controls weren't much better. Look at how many abilities you have to scroll through.

      >As for the OG, the controls are VERY shit.
They were just fine. A and R control the bro on the front while B and L control the bro on the back, Start to swap positions. Really simple and efficient.

      >Even with the remake the controls weren't much better
They're worse because as you said they make you scroll through all of them. They also prevent you from using the hammer and high jump at the same time for example.
I think you can use the touchscreen to select the abilities too but that seems just awkward, especially if you're moving around.

        Anonymous

Except there were far too many abilities and keeping track of who does what is a pain in the ass.

          In what game?

            Anonymous

            In the OG SuperStar Saga.
Don't get me wrong, it's a good game, but the abilities were overblown. Most of them were largely pointless or could be adjusted to be an action command.
Why do they each need a 'hand' command? Why not just make it contextual?
Same thing with the jumps, instead of being a separate command, why not hold down 'jump' for a large jump and get rid of the twirl entirely?
            It's bad design.

It's fun to consider. Nobody's really dug into the script of the prototype as far as I can tell, but it would be interesting to know if there are any other references to this.
Seems like there's been a lot of stuff found in this already, but the TCRF entry is practically empty.

You have to remember the people that care about a 20 year old game are not super numerous.
Of the ones that do care about 20 year old games, the ones that care about a prototype are even less.
Of the ones that care about the prototype, the ones that have the skill and/or free time to mess with the rom are even more rare.

You're talking about a subset of a subset of a subset.
The people that played this game when they were 13 are 33 now. They have lives, kids, etc.

I'm older than that and have none of those things kek. Regardless it looks more like a change in community mindset. Back in the day people seemed more interested in really documenting these things, now things look like they're more centered around "the hunt" and fetishizing these things, and when they're found it's like a terribly brief jerkoff session, which almost immediately is replaced by the lust for the next thing. So many groups are focused on lost media, to the point that once it's no longer lost, they no longer care.

Superstar Saga is as old as Mario Bros was when it was packed in as a minigame in Superstar Saga.
