the characters look too on-model. i would expect something like this to be on a tape with a label on it and no cover or a film reel. i don't think they would make a cover for a tape until it has been greenlit for production. tapes probably don't get made until a show has been on the air for a while and has proven itself successful. most importantly, where is the footage of the show?

No, it's a completely analog format. Completely impossible to copy protect, all you can do is have a little notch in it that prevents you recording over it, and that can be defeated in about 2 seconds and has nothing to do with recording the footage off it.
There is such a thing as VHS copy protection, it's called MacroVision. It's very easy to get around however.
The way it works is that fricks with certain signals in a way that won't be displayed on your TV but which will mess up the recorder you're using.
