I dunno. Software wise, we'll see. Hard to speculate on that at this point. In regards to hardware though, or moreso the cartridges, I don't think it'll be bad when it comes to backwards compatibility.
I'm anticipating they go the similar route they did with GB->GBC and DS->3DS: similar cartridge, but slight difference. Old Switch games fit in the new console, but vice versa will be physically impossible.
I'm still guessing it'll be the same cartridge from the bottom-half down, and a protruding nub up on the top-side, like the 3ds cartridges.
This is the only case in which I'll buy the next system. Give my physical backwards compatibility, or my Switch will have been the last console I'll ever buy. If my physical games will not work, I will pirate and emulate EVERY Nintendo game that I want to play moving forward. I have no reason to submit to paid digital cuckold shit.
If you file off the little nib you can actually stick a 3ds cart in a ds and it can read and write from it fine. Back before 3ds cfw was trivial to install I had to use my ds to flash a hacked save onto oot3d to get homebrew to launch
