The Institute would have actually been interesting if they're objectives leaned more towards biology instead of making fake people. One of my biggest issues with NV is how every single area is apart of some quest. Sometimes I just want to walk into an abandoned silo and kill something.

This one isn't disputable. Danse alone was a more compelling companion than most of the NV cast. MacReady was neat, too. Cait and Curie both had interesting storylines, as well.

They literally do not. They'll occasionally talk AFTER but not during dialog with other characters, although I will admit that's probably more to do with 4's dialog system not being the silly freeze frame system from 3 and NV.

In those endings, youre typically not hostile with the NCR, so wrong again. The choices in that quest are NCR or Legion, you're grasping at straws. Additionally, Arcade's happiest ending is one of the NCR endings.

It pisses me off that of all the times to employ the "pick two factions, destroy the other" design, they picked the one scenario where it makes absolutely zero sense. You are the Overboss of a group of raiders, you actually got shit done and get complemented constantly for actually getting shit done, but regardless one moron group always rebels against you.
Eh, it makes sense kind of that there would some type of rebellion with a new Overlord shaking up the power structures. I just wish there was a way to move new raiders into whichever empty building you end up with

You really can’t argue to save your life can you? I bet you had to used DLC locations because 4 has about five actual developed settlements and the rest were reserved for that moronic settlement building mechanic
The problem with the perception of the Institute is that people think it's one person. It's full of scientists that have opposing views and even sabotage each other. Which results in a lot of mistakes that have to be cleaned up. Replacing people with synths is part of that. They don't actually replace that many people, a lot of synths that you meet are runaways and one scientist helps them escape to Railroad. Which creates paranoia in commonwealth when people discover them. So a mayor is replaced to make people calm. There are genuinely evil people inside the Institute that make insane decisions, but also good people that want to help. The FEV research for example is one of the worst things that they did, but one of the scientists destroyed it and when you get there it doesn't work anymore. And the people responsible for it are gone. Then there is a replaced farmer who is genuinely a better person than the original for his family, doing experiments on seeds. But the Institute plans to kill the whole family once it is done and one scientist is very remorseful about it.
So what is the point of synths? That's the biggest question of the game. You see many uses for them through the entire thing. And it's up to you to decide if they are useful or not, or if they are even human enough to have any sort of rights. You see things like Shaun creating a synth child for you because you lose him. So they could be used to replace dead loved ones. You give a synth body to Curie, so they could be used to make robots more human and integrated into society. You can replace a person in Far Harbor yourself to spare lives and create peace. And you might even start questioning if you are a synth yourself, which the game hints at a lot more than people realize. Even synths themselves have a lot to say about the issue. DiMA for example does not agree with Railroad, the most sympathetic faction towards synths.
Synths are the biggest strength of the Fallout 4 narrative.
The problem with the institute is that it’s a harebrained concept that the inept writers try to portray as serious and nuanced but fail because they’re so evil. They’re basically discount Big MT, except without the excuse of being run by senile brains in jars.
It's a squad tactics game more than an RPG, and the weapon balance sucks balls but I liked it.

Fallout New Vegas is peak dishonest game design. It railroads you down it's main quest, you can't do whatever you want like in Fallout 3 and 4, it's just a singleplayer shooter campaign in beths janky engine. In lieu of actual roleplaying gameplay they have varied dialogue options, this is dishonest because they sell it as a roleplaying "game" yet all RP is text driven, unlike Fallout 3 or 4 where you can truly pick a role and play it out. E.G become a cannibal serial killer resident of Diamond City, you can pick whatever you want to do and actually act it out through gameplay, the main quest is entirely optional. In fallout New Vegas the main quest is the whole point, it's a fake RPG for midwits
The world building and aesthetics are also dishonest. In fallout 3 the western vibe arises from being a truly free lone wanderer journeying across the wasteland, Fallout New Vegas is unable to create this vibe authentically so they have characters in cowboy hats with southern accents have a shootout around a saloon. They are unable to write well enough to have subtle allusions to history and culture so they have to force it by having the post apocalyptic survivors literally larp as cowboys and romans. The big loss is in dialogue and story branching. I don't really mind what they did with SPECIAL, the new version allows greater freedom to branch out into what you want to specialize into as you find your preferred gameplay style instead of having to pre-plan a character. Aside from that the lack of distinct feeling communities is a major shortcoming since the game expects the player to be the one to build up a number of waypoints for themselves.
Saying that a game that's objectively bad/worse in every way is "not without its merits" or some bullshit like that is just coping. They didn't even fricking try and threw out the whole series with that title. It's over.

Personally I just hate how they rolled skills into perks. Yeah, getting the locksmith perk is essentially lly just putting 25 points into lockpicking, but previously you could put points into multiple skills each level. You could take an actually game changing perk along with the skill points. You could stop just short of the 25 point threshold and make up the rest with clothes or drugs. The perk chart is just a less interesting system to me

Iron Sights are ass and more games should ditch it as the default and bring back secondary fire modes or weapon quirks. Stuff as simple right clicking adjusting the power level of the Laser Rifle in System Shock feels infinitely better than that 50 guns that all aim down sights if you want any level of accuracy. Particular in these action RPG pretending to have all this gun diversity.
I think Fallout 4 is just a victim of Emil and Todd being shit at their job. Todd's probably the one pushing streamlining the RPG mechanics and Emil obviously shit at writing created a game torn between Bethesda employees trying to make a good game and then leadership just fricking it up.
It's like they have fundamental aspects down but the rest of it sucks complete ass. Hell even the DLCs somehow manage to be better and those likely not touched by Todd or Emil.
I FO4 worth playing? I played it at launch on Xbone, did a fair bit of the sidequests but dropped it right when I got to the part where the main story was asking you to lock in a faction to side with. Its been so long and I don't really remember any of the sidequests, so I thought it might be good to give it a replay with the DLC.
Also, how have mods enhanced the game? I liked both 3 and NV (I don't get people who can hate one and love the other, even if I think NV is better in most aspects) and I'm still sore about FO4 having the whole voiced protag / vague dialog wheel. I also remember the leveling system being kind of moronic and dumbed down compared to previous entries. Weapon customization also fricking sucked when I realized so many of the weapons were just pipegun variants, but I imagine mods have added tons of weapons. I mainly want to know if there are any mods that make it better as an RPG.

The Main Faction stuff is bad, without mods Settlements are only kind of nice when you mostly put in the bare minimum instead of trying to turn every spot into a fortress. As for side quests and exploration I think it's a pretty good experience. It's better to just abandon the idea of playing your character. Just play Nate. Soldier from the Past looking for his kid. When you do that it's not the worst thing in the world but I have a preference for defined characters over blank slate protagonists so I don't feel the sting of that as hard as some people do.
For Mods I would just go off a personal basis. Play the game, get a feeling of what you personally wish it was more like, select mods based off that. I always get Modern Weapon swap packs because I dislike Bethesda gun design, a more vibrant color shader, the full dialogue wheel instead of the directional compass, more companions at once, or at least always getting to have Dog Meat. An Improved Bodies and Faces.
At the moment most mods are fricked because of the latest update but you can get a mod to reverse the update so most stuff will still be fine.
Funny thing is, there's literally zero benefit to trying to enclose your settlements. The walls don't do a fricking thing. Enemies spawn within the workshop area unless you're already there when the raid happens.
You're far better off placing energy turrets everywhere with good sightlines.
It's an awful system and I feel next to no incentive "Improving" the dozens of little shacks or collapsing towers with two residents, a single stalk of corn and a puddle of water. If the Focus was on liberating and occupying actual interesting locations like the Automotive Factory for Resources that would noticeably improve a headquarters or a small number of actually significant settlements that would have been much more satisfying.
For the sake of getting your merchants not because the system is satisfying in any capacity. The best way to do it is still "As little as possible", it's just your minimum gets raised a bunch because you want those goodies.

Yeah, base game does a piss-poor job of showing the settlements making a difference. There's some mod in my pack that throws more neutral parties into various areas as you expand, setting up little bars and trading posts and the like. It's a nice touch.
That combined with A Forest makes me want to walk around and look for things at least.
I liked it for the atmosphere and exploration. The writing and dialogue was disappointing, but you can tweak it with mods and use AI for the PC's voice, etc.
If I were to play it again I would mod it to run like a survival horror. It's common to dismiss the combat, but it's enjoyable. Scarce ammo, realistic travel/damage, and a better food/rest system might make the experience

Nick specifically is pretty cool, but synths in general don't make any fricking sense at all, and the only reason they're in the game is because bethesda needed a new enemy type to freshen things up.
It's actually far worse than that. They make perfect sense because fo3 set it up in a good way. It comes from The Replicated Man questline in fo3. In that game, it was portrayed as if the Institute was the remnants of MIT, and was super advanced with an elitist and eugenicist bent, building androids. They could have done it in a cool way where they actually built out MIT as a location, had it hypersecured with turrets sentry bots etc, terrorizing the wasteland, factional quests and relations like in NV. Instead it's a shitty underground enclave of homosexuals lead by your son with nothing indicative of its relation back to MIT and next to no lore. Frick that game

And they didn't do anything with them. Nick is great, the courser is bland, and Danse being a synth comes out of nowhere. No major quests about investigating who's a synth and who isn't. No moral questions over whether wiping their mind and sending them into the wastes is right. No fricking bladerunner references other than a single out of the way environmental thing on a roof. But then the entire game is so empty of real content it's not just synths. At least far harbour was nice.

The problem with the perception of the Institute is that people think it's one person. It's full of scientists that have opposing views and even sabotage each other. Which results in a lot of mistakes that have to be cleaned up. Replacing people with synths is part of that. They don't actually replace that many people, a lot of synths that you meet are runaways and one scientist helps them escape to Railroad. Which creates paranoia in commonwealth when people discover them. So a mayor is replaced to make people calm. There are genuinely evil people inside the Institute that make insane decisions, but also good people that want to help. The FEV research for example is one of the worst things that they did, but one of the scientists destroyed it and when you get there it doesn't work anymore. And the people responsible for it are gone. Then there is a replaced farmer who is genuinely a better person than the original for his family, doing experiments on seeds. But the Institute plans to kill the whole family once it is done and one scientist is very remorseful about it.
So what is the point of synths? That's the biggest question of the game. You see many uses for them through the entire thing. And it's up to you to decide if they are useful or not, or if they are even human enough to have any sort of rights. You see things like Shaun creating a synth child for you because you lose him. So they could be used to replace dead loved ones. You give a synth body to Curie, so they could be used to make robots more human and integrated into society. You can replace a person in Far Harbor yourself to spare lives and create peace. And you might even start questioning if you are a synth yourself, which the game hints at a lot more than people realize. Even synths themselves have a lot to say about the issue. DiMA for example does not agree with Railroad, the most sympathetic faction towards synths.
Synths are the biggest strength of the Fallout 4 narrative.
The problem with the institute is that it’s a harebrained concept that the inept writers try to portray as serious and nuanced but fail because they’re so evil. They’re basically discount Big MT, except without the excuse of being run by senile brains in jars.

Fallout New Vegas is peak dishonest game design. It railroads you down it's main quest, you can't do whatever you want like in Fallout 3 and 4, it's just a singleplayer shooter campaign in beths janky engine. In lieu of actual roleplaying gameplay they have varied dialogue options, this is dishonest because they sell it as a roleplaying "game" yet all RP is text driven, unlike Fallout 3 or 4 where you can truly pick a role and play it out. E.G become a cannibal serial killer resident of Diamond City, you can pick whatever you want to do and actually act it out through gameplay, the main quest is entirely optional. In fallout New Vegas the main quest is the whole point, it's a fake RPG for midwits
The world building and aesthetics are also dishonest. In fallout 3 the western vibe arises from being a truly free lone wanderer journeying across the wasteland, Fallout New Vegas is unable to create this vibe authentically so they have characters in cowboy hats with southern accents have a shootout around a saloon. They are unable to write well enough to have subtle allusions to history and culture so they have to force it by having the post apocalyptic survivors literally larp as cowboys and romans. Another example would be the legion vs the railroad

The big loss is in dialogue and story branching. I don't really mind what they did with SPECIAL, the new version allows greater freedom to branch out into what you want to specialize into as you find your preferred gameplay style instead of having to pre-plan a character. Aside from that the lack of distinct feeling communities is a major shortcoming since the game expects the player to be the one to build up a number of waypoints for themselves.

Personally I just hate how they rolled skills into perks. Yeah, getting the locksmith perk is essentially lly just putting 25 points into lockpicking, but previously you could put points into multiple skills each level. You could take an actually game changing perk along with the skill points. You could stop just short of the 25 point threshold and make up the rest with clothes or drugs. The perk chart is just a less interesting system to me

Iron Sights are ass and more games should ditch it as the default and bring back secondary fire modes or weapon quirks. Stuff as simple right clicking adjusting the power level of the Laser Rifle in System Shock feels infinitely better than that 50 guns that all aim down sights if you want any level of accuracy. I think Fallout 4 is just a victim of Emil and Todd being shit at their job. Todd's probably the one pushing streamlining the RPG mechanics and Emil obviously shit at writing created a game torn between Bethesda employees trying to make a good game and then leadership just fricking it up.

I FO4 worth playing? I played it at launch on Xbone, did a fair bit of the sidequests but dropped it right when I got to the part where the main story was asking you to lock in a faction to side with. Its been so long and I don't really remember any of the sidequests, so I thought it might be good to give it a replay with the DLC.
Also, how have mods enhanced the game? I liked both 3 and NV (I don't get people who can hate one and love the other, even if I think NV is better in most aspects) and I'm still sore about FO4 having the whole voiced protag / vague dialog wheel. I also remember the leveling system being kind of moronic and dumbed down compared to previous entries. Weapon customization also fricking sucked when I realized so many of the weapons were just pipegun variants, but I imagine mods have added tons of weapons. I mainly want to know if there are any mods that make it better as an RPG.

The Main Faction stuff is bad, without mods Settlements are only kind of nice when you mostly put in the bare minimum instead of trying to turn every spot into a fortress. As for side quests and exploration I think it's a pretty good experience. It's better to just abandon the idea of playing your character. Just play Nate. Soldier from the Past looking for his kid. When you do that it's not the worst thing in the world but I have a preference for defined characters over blank slate protagonists so I don't feel the sting of that as hard as some people do.
For Mods I would just go off a personal basis. Play the game, get a feeling of what you personally wish it was more like, select mods based off that. I always get Modern Weapon swap packs because I dislike Bethesda gun design, a more vibrant color shader, the full dialogue wheel instead of the directional compass, more companions at once, or at least always getting to have Dog Meat. An Improved Bodies and Faces.
At the moment most mods are fricked because of the latest update but you can get a mod to reverse the update so most stuff will still be fine.
Funny thing is, there's literally zero benefit to trying to enclose your settlements. The walls don't do a fricking thing. Enemies spawn within the workshop area unless you're already there when the raid happens.
You're far better off placing energy turrets everywhere with good sightlines.
It's an awful system and I feel next to no incentive "Improving" the dozens of little shacks or collapsing towers with two residents, a single stalk of corn and a puddle of water. If the Focus was on liberating and occupying actual interesting locations like the Automotive Factory for Resources that would noticeably improve a headquarters or a small number of actually significant settlements that would have been much more satisfying.
If you play on Survival, you'd understand. Upgrading the settlements becomes an essential part of the gameplay loop
For the sake of getting your merchants not because the system is satisfying in any capacity. The best way to do it is still "As little as possible", it's just your minimum gets raised a bunch because you want those goodies.
I'm just saying, settlements are way more important once you lose access to fast travel and saving.
Yeah, base game does a piss-poor job of showing the settlements making a difference. There's some mod in my pack that throws more neutral parties into various areas as you expand, setting up little bars and trading posts and the like. It's a nice touch.
That combined with A Forest makes me want to walk around and look for things at least.

I liked it for the atmosphere and exploration. The writing and dialogue was disappointing, but you can tweak it with mods and use AI for the PC's voice, etc.
If I were to play it again I would mod it to run like a survival horror. It's common to dismiss the combat, but it's enjoyable. Scarce ammo, realistic travel/damage, and a better food/rest system might make the experience

They wouldve been if there was an endgame. The Institute just made synths to make synths. Just so the nerds in the basement never had to go outside. Nick was cool because his specific prototype character got some development but he got more development than the entirety of the Institute.
Nick specifically is pretty cool, but synths in general don't make any fricking sense at all, and the only reason they're in the game is because bethesda needed a new enemy type to freshen things up.
It's actually far worse than that. They make perfect sense because fo3 set it up in a good way. It comes from The Replicated Man questline in fo3. In that game, it was portrayed as if the Institute was the remnants of MIT, and was super advanced with an elitist and eugenicist bent, building androids. They could have done it in a cool way where they actually built out MIT as a location, had it hypersecured with turrets sentry bots etc, terrorizing the wasteland, factional quests and relations like in NV. Instead it's a shitty underground enclave of homosexuals lead by your son with nothing indicative of its relation back to MIT and next to no lore. Frick that game
