There is a level and skill cap now based on story progression, so you can't grind levels if you're stuck. I'm not a degenerate but some people will have issue with that.

By what I've seen, Tactics Ogre is more popular in Japan than it is any other country, especially among the boomers and Matsuno is one of those "auteur" directors that stand out. The SNES is the original then it got a remake on PSP. Considering the QoLs improvements in this new version, I'd definitely reccomend it over the older versions.

I think the pricepoint is worth it if you've never played TO before considering a single playthrough alone can net you 60+ hours and even then you're encouraged to do two other unqiue routes plus massively expansive post game content but if you've bought TO in the past, it really comes down to how worth the QoL and gameplay changes are to you individually.

How unique are the routes really? I remember people shilling SMT for Chaos-Neutral-Law route diversity but in the end they always end up being the same shit.
the routes have different events and characters, but all 3 merge into the same 2 endings. the endings have lots of variations for the characters' fates (even the protag) depending on who you help, which quests you complete, etc etc.
They are pretty different except they all get forced to reconverge for the final chapter. So basically chapters boil down to this

Depending on which route you took to get to 4 some sidequest flags are raised/dropped which leads to the only real differences between routes in chapter 4 being their available sidequests while the main plot of the chapter stays the same. This is why the timeline of chapter 4 seems more bloated than those of other chapters, route exclusive sidequests.

I never played Tactics Ogre, it seemed too similar to FFT and I didn't much care for how that game was so slow and grindy, despite not having much of a stat emphasis to it.
Is Tactics Ogre as similar as it looks? Like I'd even have guessed the story is similar too, of ye olde medieval politics with a splash of fantasy and religion.
FFT was developed as a game in the line of Tactics Ogre before squeenix brought the developers on board and Final Fantasy themed it.
Coming from FFT these stood out:
Story is pretty similar. You got politics and dark knights trying to further their goals in search of an ancient power where your sister is key.
Gameplay is also similar but the battles play out with more units (6-12) per side.
It's similar to fft where you can go through the game just using generic units with uniques never being forced on you.
Turn order is similar in that you can potentialy double turn people if you're fast enough, the game does't use phases for you or the ai.
It has a smaller skillset per class (most skills are stat boosting passives like Attack+,HP+ or Resistance+) but you can activate the few interesting skills seperately from your actions. Weapon types get finisher you can do after they charge.
Spells have a big spell list that spellcasting classes get access to portions of it depending on their flavor. Spells are also cast instantly.
Very few class skills can be transfered between classes and apart from counterattack and reflect % of damage i can't recall many reaction skills.
FFT is meh and it's one of history's greatest crimes how that game became the grandfather of the genre instead of Tactics Ogre.

Triangle Strategy ended up being pretty good. There's a lot of story, but there's no grind, which sort of makes up for it in my book.

FF12 was supposed to launch in 2003 and because of the failure of Square Pictures and that damned movie, everything had to be reevaluated.

Valks being able to heal was a PSP addition though.
Their healing seems more potent, and if nothing else they can focus more towards it since Knights and Rune Fencers will need skills to help with physical combat.

It seems Matsuno is reverting many of the changes Hiroshi Minagawa implemented on the PSP version. Minagawa had final say on that game.
Hopefully Matsuno is given another chance at Square. He should create a smaller budget game ala Triangle Strategy.
The Producer and Director behind TO are also the same people behind FF12 TZA. I would expect any near future works with Matsuno to be with these two.

They were slow tanks in the PSP version, but with Dark spells instead of Divine. Part of the problem is they were too slow, slower than Knights while having the same armor options

Some people will buy it but if they sold it for 30$ they would have easily sold twice as many copies which would spread word of mouth. Though I don't give a single shit about receiving any remaster or a sequel so I would have pirated regardless.

Well it's hard to say how the endgame balance will be like now with all the changes that have been done. In the PSP version if you were well prepared and kept everyone equipped with good crafted gear it was hard to lose fights unless you were intentionally put at a disadvantage like being only allowed a limited number of units.

The flashiest attacks in the games are unfortunately enemy exclusive. I remember one guardian for an apocrypha spell basically making a twister that spun the entire map around or those 3 unique summon spells the final boss uses that has giant sized monsters in their animations.
