Playing through Morrowind for the first time right now and having a blast, Oblivion will be next on the list.
Is level scaling as bad as some people say in Oblivion? If so, are there any methods to make it less annoying without using mods? I'd love my first playthrough to be vanilla.

No. Unironically wait for skyblivion or the remake. It is infuriating.

The level scaling isn't as bad as people make it out to be, it's not as bad as Morrowind, you don't have to minmax your skills to avoid being outclassed all the time. The problem is that in late game, you'll start running into common enemies wearing glass or daedric armor and it's bullshit that random bandits would have that kind of shit.

        Anonymous

        >it's not as bad as Morrowind
What the frick are you talking about? Morrowind has barely any level scaling and you only “need” to min-max endurance, the rest doesn’t matter at all.

          Anonymous

well it doesn't *really* matter in Oblivion either, you can still play and win just fine without worrying about that shit. In both cases, it's a minor issue that has gotten memed into being something more than it is.

            Anonymous

            >it's a minor issue
            No it’s not. See

It’s worse than people make it out to be. Even artifacts scale with your level so the optimal way to play the game is to not do any quests until you’re level 30 which is fricking moronic and one of the dumbest mechanics I’ve ever seen in any game ever

              Anonymous

that is not a problem for anyone except min-maxxers. Morrowind also does level scaling for loot.

                Anonymous

So you’re okay with the game giving you shitty versions of one-of-a-kind items that you can never get again simply because you’re a low level? This is shit game design

                Anonymous

I just don't care because I'll find better items later. The real problem is being able to obtain such unique artifacts while you're at low levels, they should be very difficult to find and get.

                Anonymous

this genuinely pissed me off with Oblivion so after several playthroughs I started prioritizing levelling up doing quests that didn't give unique items but it makes it very difficult when the level scaling hits a certain spike before you hit the level for max level uniques.
I have probably thousands of hours in Oblivion and it was my favorite game as a kid so I spent a ton of time trying to break the game and figuring out the best ways to do things. I was so autistic about it I displayed all my max level unique weapons and artificats. I did one run where I literally did every questline in the game + DLCs and then larped as a god of cyrodiil and racked up over a thousand hours on a single save file.

I always get a mod to fix this, it’s necessary sadly

                yes. it's about the journey.
i'll probably get something better later on anyway.

                Anonymous

Morrowind only scales the loot in random boxes and barrels, it doesn't scale fricking unique artifacts that you can only obtain once in the whole game.

                Anonymous

if you can get the unique, legendary artifact at level 7 then who gives a frick, clearly it's not that big of a deal if such a weak, literally fresh off the boat b***h could get it.

                Anonymous

Brain dead argument. Oblivion is inherently scaled to your level so you can do anything at any time, you absolute tard. The only exceptions are Daedric quests, and it's not because they're hard, but because they have artificial level requirements.

                Anonymous

yeah, and I'm saying that's the real issue. the artifact obviously ain't that big of a deal if some random level 2 homosexual can get it.

                Anonymous

depends on the daedra quests and some of them are available right away or for low level characters, most of the artifacts are still level scaled despite this.
I can see the point in creating restrictions on some of them because getting your hands on some of the daedra artifacts right away would be ridiculous.
Oghma Infinium is a good example because that can totally frick with your charactets build.

This is why they would place powerful monsters nearby. The whole fricking point is to explore and not know what you might run into. Making all loot and monsters scale with you completely eliminates that sense of exploration.

        Anonymous

It's much worse. High level character deals several times higher damage than lvl 1 character while goblins increase their health 100 times. The only way to kill late game enemies in timely manner is using custom spells with weakness to magic.

I am one for saying always play games vanilla first but with oblivion if you can install a mod that sorts the enemy scaling out you will have a much better experience.
Also a mod in morrowind which adds a non lore breaking and immersive house in balmora makes the game infinitely better.

No, the Agent is just a personal friend of the Emperor. I don't think there's any possible backstory combinations that mention the Blades, and you do interact with them a bit in the story (and they're kind of shady fricks, even though they help you).

make sure to do the kvatch quests at either a lower level or when you have turned your guy into a demigod.
the level scaling is jarring but doable in most of the game but if you hit kvatch at a certain point you will get your shit absolutely pushed in.
the only way past is to either lower the difficulty or to use all of your potions up and abuse the wait system to heal yourself.

      >Is level scaling as bad as some people say in Oblivion?
      It's much worse.
      >If so, are there any methods to make it less annoying without using mods?
You can't play it without mods. At the very least, you need the Auto Update Leveled Items and Spells mod.
If you don't feel like using any mods besides that one, I would encourage you to use the console and delevel yourself manually. Get used to typing the "player.setlevel" command, it works as you'd expect with no problems. It does lower your main attributes which scale with your level but it works and makes the game much easier.
Also quick tip: never go past level 30, there is no benefit to it and only makes the game harder for no reason.

      Anonymous

The worst part of the scaling is that it replaces enemies across the game & gives bandits ridiculous armors which is pretty glaring & goofy. The difficulty isn't really that big of a deal until the later levels when enemies with ridiculous hp pools start showing up but that's pretty high level.
You really don't even need to level up all that often, you can keep getting skill increases & their perks forever without leveling the only thing you miss out on is attribute increases, skill trainers & things that are leveled like loot & quests.
Its stupid easy to level up fast even when you deliberately set your primary skills to ones you won't ever use but you only level when you sleep so it's up to you when to initiate it.

        >the quest for hunting the unicorn has a level 20 something requirement and its the only unicorn in the game
        >make a save file for her as a basic b***h mage
        >spam conjuration and alteration spells constantly
        >hit the required level in a matter of hours
        >hijack the unicorn instead of killing it and let sister ride around
        good times

The first time I played it I immediately started wandering around aimlessly just exploring the map after leaving the sewer & randomly ran into the unicorn & thought "oh cool a unicorn" then he rushed me down & fricking killed me in 3 seconds. I hadn't saved so all the places I found on the map were gone & I was right back to the sewer exit, that made me super paranoid about exploring until I got stronger.
I layer learned that hes level 15 & is in the game from the start, it gave me the impression that the world was way more dangerous than it actually was- deadly unicorn aside.

back when this came out my dad and I would watch a movie every Friday night and before we did, I would load up Oblivion on 360, set up the gold duplication glitch where it would multiply each time you pressed A, unplug one of the component cables so the input would switch from the 360 to our DVD player and then just sit there pressing A on the controller while we watched the movie. absolute kino times with pops

Oblivion has to be one of if not the most exploitable games ever made which is why I like it so much.
      >input would switch from the 360 to our DVD player and then just sit there pressing A on the controller while we watched the movie.
I put on a movie & position my character in a doorway which made him land instantly from a jump & spammed Y to power level acrobatics. By the time the movie was over I could jump 300ft lol, so many things can be sequence broke if you can jump high enough. I hate that skyrim removed athletics & acrobatics, really pissed me off.
