Game plays similar to Arise, but more like the earlier 3D titles. Kosmos collab is happening right now and only has like 2 days left.
The gacha is weapons and Mystic Artes (they call them mirage artes here), characters are all gotten for free thru story chapters or respective events, but pulling their 5* or MA gets you them early.
Weapons are character specific as each has an arte tied to it, 3 and 4* weapons included. If you want to use someone right away, the. You can buy their 3/4* weapons from the Turtelz shop using dupe currency or earning it from playing coop afew times.
I don’t remember what new players get because it’s been so long. Pretty sure you get an MA selector.

You can try to reroll since you get a free multi on Kos’ banner, and it’s just her on it, other than that, I don’t think trying to hit 3 million points to get her MA and 5* is viable for a fresh new player. You still unlock her anyway, so there’s that for you, but you won’t be able to buy her gear off the Turtelz shop as soon as the event ends.

Just because other characters are worse about it doesn't mean it stops being a problem.
Really any character doesn't need any more than 5 or 6 MAs. Once you have more than that, it becomes a pain in the ass to find the one you want to use in the middle of battle. You can turn off some MAs during setup, but by doing that you're conceding that those MAs are useless and you might as well not have them.
I mean. Power creep was always gonna happen but unironically, the changes to MAs benefit the older ones in retrospective for those who have been playing so long
I don't see how it's a problem for a character to get anything new. If it's worse than their other MA's it's worse, don't go for it. It's not like those 2 have an obscene amount compared to others. It's their games anniversary so nobody would care regardless how many they have.
There's always going to be MA's better than others. Mithos' MA's are all shit compared to his first one but it doesn't mean he shouldn't get any more.

Sure would be nice if we got as many characters to make a reunion as possible. So far there’s been Alisa, Haseo and Kos-Mos but neither the Destiny nor Vesperia trio were involved in any of those events so I think the staff might be aware and avoiding it. On the other hand the Xenosaga event had The Battle of your Soul as it’s bgm which was Kos-Mos’ theme in PxZ1. Plus they gave her Episode 1 look as a costume despite so many recent collab characters not getting costumes so she can easily fit into both Stahn’s and Yuri’s groups from those games perfectly so I do appreciate that.

Yeah don’t do a bulk download unless your don’t want to play for a few hours or leave it overnight. You can close the game and turn it off on the title screen options.
Honestly, just save and pull for what you want. There’s not really a tier list, other than Annie sucks. I recommend google translate app to take screenshots and translate them when needed. Use the Tales of the Rays fanwiki for weapons/artes/arte enhancement translations.
Characters are labeled with an “Anima” element, where some events will 2x boost the stats of a specific Anima, but they frequently stick to Rainbow Anima which means anyone gets a 1.5x boost.
Events range from collectathons, coop point events like raids or Festival. What new weapons or Mirrage Artes are featured for the event give you a point/item drop boost for said event, while things that are not featured give you a minor boost. You must equip it to the characters to get the boost (only in Festival events is where it doesn’t matter) Getting a whale helper to show up on your list can carry you even if your not built for it. This will also be your main way of swimming in resources for enhancing characters, and obviously diamonds (pull currency).
Units have 2 different leveling… levels. They have a unit level, and a weapon level. Weapon level goes up the more stuff you collect for them, be it weapons or MAs. The more dupes, the more the cap goes up for them. Meanwhile the unit level is set at 50, the cap raised using a unit LB crystal (easily obtainable from events, exchange shops always have these crystal vouchers, don’t ever buy them from the Turtelz shop). Max cap is 70, but the exp required between 65 and 70 gets insane, and level 60 is more than enough so nothing to worry about.
There is a tower gauntlet mode that refreshes every month, that is something to focus on when it comes to building up a roster. It’s not hard or insane, but it’s 60 floors and the last 10 can get to you.
There are 2 other tower modes that happen at least once a month but don’t last all month. There’s the elemental tower, which is also a gauntlet, but the team you use in one stage is eliminated and you use the next team in the line up for the next stage. Killing things fast matters but not that much.
Then there’s the Best Hero tower, which is a high score race against the clock. You make 1 team and go thru waves of monsters for points. You have a minute but the time permanently increases when you do a daily play of it or get new high scores. It’s not PVP, as you only need to get 7000 points to get the highest tier of rewards, but there’s a high score list to see other players just for fun. Weakness element matters a lot in this mode (or cheesing with Asbel or Tidal Wave/AoE spell spam).
In terms of other stuff, there’s the main story. 4 arcs of it, the first 2 arcs have no stamina cost. I believe there’s a reset button for those 2 arcs that resets all your quests task, obviously don’t hit that until you 100% every chapter on both difficulties for even more diamonds.
The coop mode gets turned on occasionally, just team up with 3 others to kill some waves, good for getting Turtlez shop currency to trade in for weapons you might want to get right away.
There’s the Recollections mode. Basically a sequel story to the main story while also being a recap mode for Tales titles. Your units stats and levels don’t carry over, but obtained weapons and MAs do. Similar play style to Best Heroes, with some changes to how movement and battle controls work. This mode has its own stamina.
And with that, just do your dailies and play what you can, only pressure is when an event is gonna end.
Oh and unit awakening. You can only use awakened characters for tower modes. Awakening lets you equip a 2nd MA on a unit. You can force awaken someone using a tear drop looking item, or just simply getting any of their MAs (for free, through tickets, or the gacha) will auto awaken them. The basic MA you obtain when you recruit a unit thru story or an event does not count.
Your Stamina/AP is only increased from getting yellow orbs via the main story mode cutscenes or watching character skits in the glossary. There is overflow implemented, so no stamina gets wasted if you go over you maximum.

You will end up using at least Asbel, Ix and Mithos like everybody else. Aside from that you're good.

It's really worth it. The gels heal all the party members without needing to pull an MA or wait for your healer. The time bottle is quite a hurdle to get but it's just an easy swipe timestop without having to find a Mint friend

… Spells were banned? So I brought Rita for no reason, well shit. Using my SGs and Ix’s Origin burned thru it as soon as most of the ghosts were huddled together, and landing a crit with Asbel. I do have Rita with her collab 5* so maybe that sniper shot helped with the crit rolling.

When in doubt, just reroll for crits using Asbel and bring Ix for emergency MA button. Anyone else, just have Spirit Gears precharged or built for quick breaking so that Asbel can land crits.

Today was a legitimate “Use Asbel and reroll for crits” day. I went in blind with no prep to see what was restricted, and when the only thing it let me use was Asbel’s Burial Blade, I knew it was a sign. Didn’t look like MA gauge was nerfed since it charged enough for me to use 2 of his MAs and 1 of Ix’s.

Loni has easier artes to activate crit than Lloyd. Also, I put in Burst Effect for Loni's gMA so it's actually way stronger than Lloyd's earth sgMA.

It’s beefy, and the worst is how fast it goes into blocking/almost no stagger time right in the middle of combos. Then when it does block, it stays blocking the whole time until you somehow get all your AI team to chill out

I will say, this was the first time in a long time where the game made me use items since their introduction, and im a long time vet player. Put having Jade on the banner, pretty sure a good number of people would have pulled for extra bonus.
Pretty sure Tempest lost it by a hair of missing points, considering the jump of the gauge between the last 2 days, could've really been that people chose not to get full bonus because of the difficulty.

I would have thought Tear too because of her popularity, but these origin events tend to have at least one character that hasn't had anything for a while, so I would guess Guy, Chloe, or Jay.
Also worth noting that this months tower is fire, water and dark element, so if Senel and Veigue are fire and water, then the third MA will be dark.

I think Tekken is an option on the poll that had Xenosaga. Plus it’s Namco and both series have met before in multiple games so it’s super weird T7 was ignored completely in favor of Guilty Gear.

I may have phrased that wrong. I guess there is a possibility they could do a Tekken collab eventually, but what I doubt is they'd do a T8 collab so soon after it just came out.
Rays likes to use material from the source, so for one, they need to wait a while to avoid spoilers, and two, while they may both be Namco devs I doubt Rays devs got an advance copy (I doubt the Tekken devs cared about a dying mobage to offer the collab from their side) so they need time to find out what exactly is in the game themselves. I guess they could do a Tekken general series collab that has nothing to do with 8, but there's no incentive to do that now.
Also, they just did Xenosaga so I don't think they'd do 2 Namco collabs in a row (Asteria is in a weird place where it's not really a collab even though they treat it like one)

It seems that Tales of Link collabed with T7 early on in its lifetime, so perhaps that’s why Rays never got a chance? Super odd either way. But generally I think they like to swap between video game and anime series to collab with so they’re probably going to do a new Jump series soon after Xenosaga.

Yeah, xMA and Form Change MAs can’t be enhanced. Everything else is fine though, Origin, Endings, collab characters, also burst enhanced MAs can still be enhanced.
Also you get the item to do an SG enhance from getting vouchers and trading them in the Turtlez shop, same as getting Burst enhance cubes. The raid rewards have these vouchers scattered around.

When you enhance it, it starts off at SG level 3. After that, you have to level it up like normal using the same gems.

No one said either that it's ending right now or that they want it going for another year. The story is sort of winding down (in the sense that we're getting answers to questions now.)
We don't know if there's going to be another arc. It's not impossible.
The broad strokes of the plot are Lugh fricked up the world (accidentally) again, and ended up in the crapsack future with amnesia. She's happy living there (as Elnath) for a while, but then she gets her memories back. Meanwhile, the party has come to the conclusion time travel is possible, and comes up with a great idea to fix the state of the world by going back to the past. Not wanting the past few years of her life to disappear in a time paradox, Elnath comes up with the great idea to go into the past herself, prevent the party from following her, and sacrifice herself to fix the problem, which she then runs off to go do. Of course, the party immediately figures out how to follow her, and follows her into the time period right after the main rays story ends. Where we are the goal is to stop Elnath and figure out a better plan to fix the problem in question (possibly by figuring out the actual cause of the problem, since not even the people involved in the original incident understand what the frick happened). We know the broad strokes of the backstory for every single new named character, but there's still other questions + those back stories could absolutely be fleshed out more.
If you only care about characters from other Tales games there's nothing here for you. It's just Destiny 2 characters sprinkled in where thematically appropriate.
There's translations for the first couple chapters and summaries for several more afterwards in the usual place to look for story summaries.

They actually didn't say that either! they said the climax was "nearing" or "starting" a few months ago. But the word used for climax doesn't really imply that it is (or isn't) the end. Machine TL should be taken with a grain of salt. It gets the rough topic right, but it will never get exact connotations right.
My general take is that the story will probably end within the first half of this year, but not next month, and probably not April either.
Mikleo does have a decent amount in content in Rays. It's just that for someone who is supposedly the most popular Tales character. He is pretty much disappointing

You can actually do a solo run on it (the usual people, wind sgs like Kyle and Shing)
There's no time limit so you can take as long as you like
Yeah, it feels like a lot of people will complain if they can't instantly win everything.
The only hard part today is how much of a damage sponge the dragon is. Just remember to bring a healer and keep in mind it's going to take a while to chip away at it.
The damage restriction is a tad overkill since there really aren't that many one hit attacks that are insanely strong like Asbel's Soujin

the dinos big bodies push each other or the dragon into my range when their attacks normally miss. all those big bodies pushing one another was more annoying than the dragon itself

Loni has heal and his burst 5* is a vamp arte. Luckily, it's two hits so it has enough damage to bypass the restriction

My Droite can take a few hits from the dragon. I had to quickly build up my gauge so I can MA nuke the dinos. Her MA is a single hit attack so it easily bypasses the 1500 damage nullify restriction which is the key to doing damage.
Nah Gauche has First Aid, Droite didn't get it.
Loni's burst 5* was insanely helpful for this solo run.

What does gaining a "3rd style" mean and how do I get to doing that? I see that many titles have that requirement.
Take a screencap because i dont know what that is either but i can compare it to other titles i have.
The only thing i can think of is having 3 MA's equipped on a unit, main/sub/auto. Maybe doing their skill quest, or equipping them with 3 tower passives
Teacher Student system. The Styles are titles that can be changed on the profile page.
On the Character upgrade page, above ALL there is a gray rectangle to tap. Fill up the left side with teachers, these are the units that will get Styles. Fill up the right side with students, they will get temporary stat bonus until switched out.
To get the Style titles, we would need to reach 1,200 points. We get 10 points from clearing quests with student. +2 more if the Teacher in on the team. 1 student can hold 300 points at a time.
Best way is to do this with 20 characters.
4 teachers, 16 students. Clear x5 ap quests six times then switch to a different set of students.
after 24 clears, the style titles should be rewarded.

Sort of. Baldr (and the initial 6 Recollection characters, unsure about Elnath and Agrado) are Fujishima's and Mercuria is Okumura's. I don't think there's an Iwamoto, Kobayashi, or Nakazawa design in there, though, but there's a handful of other designers who worked on it without other Tales credits (Hidenori Matsubara, Koichi Itakura, possibly others because a large percentage of the cast has no designer credit)
I think Rays puts in more effort than the rest of the mixed designer games in keeping everyone cohesive, but you can still see bits of everyone's style poking through (And Nevan in particular stands out and feels very obviously Inomata)
Karia is very obviously Inomata. The eyes are too distinct with her big, detailed, doll-like ones.

Having played the game again. I really don't think Alisha would've stayed in the party either way because of the makeup of her character. Flynn clearly didn't stay with the party during the original game. Dude never came back despite being seen as way more important that anyone else in the party except Rita and Estelle. current rays models are 1mb max (other than the recollection cast, which cap out at 2mb; they have significantly larger and more elaborate textures, more polygons, and more bones). the game is already something like 9gb. do you want it to be 10gb?

unless by "main" you mean "protagonists" or "protagonists and heroines" that's still nearly everyone, since the crossover characters who are story-important are basically all antagonists. dist, richter, mithos, lukius, artorius, elraine, barbatos, van, sync... at that point why are you not doing everyone?
the last time they did a model update they left the costumes as they are. it's really obvious if you look at ix's costumes, since he's one of the few who got a model update. his older costumes have worse textures and fewer polygons

which is honestly fine in game. you only notice it when you try to do shit with them in blender. Honestly the rays model there has more soul here. i know it's because the lighting is baked in, but other than the hair the rays model looks so much better despite being a tenth the filesize. i really felt this when they added kanata and misella to rays, they just look so much better in rays even with their dinky optimized 1mb models
if i were to complain about something like that i'd make it the hands. the hot-swappable hand models are hilarious. recollection models have real hands with finger bones, though.

most tales fans i talked to had trouble playing crestoria on their phones, which imo heavily contributed to its death. meanwhile rays is optimized to the point where literally no one owns a phone that can't handle it.
I'd kill for Rays being playable on PC for this to, well "work".
Now THATs an idea. But still keeping the mobile one up and having a PC client with updated graphics would essentially be developing for 2 different games. The main problem would be the amount of money they would need; Bamco would look at the costs and probably laugh as they hit the EoS button they keep under their desk.

Updating their models would mean all the costumes as well.
Costumes, weapon skins, battle effects, and even having to update animations across the board. Simply copy and pasting new models over the old ones is not how it works.
Putting aside disk space, making the models bigger would also increases load times. I think we can all agree the load times are already fricking long as it is.

IMO you should consider picking a favorite whether you have the gMA or not. Not every day we get a selector, and they give us a random sMA ticket in pretty much every event.
