Custom games are still the best in any RTS ever made and it's absolutely bonkers that it hasn't been topped in 20 years. Truly we are lost.

yeah I am actually beyond words, I feel like playing custom maps back in ~2005-2008 was the best fun i've ever had with an online game, and the fact that starcraft 2 despite having more intricate map creator never reached such community is saddening. Hell even warcraft 3 campaigns are still the gold standard for smaller scale RTS and real time squad based games.

The sheer amount of variety that was going through the custom games scene (Along with things like goldsrc/source mods at the time) could easily be considered some of the best years to play games. I agree with you as well anon, the campaign missions were really well done along with Brood Wars, I'm shocked that other games haven't tried. CoH 3 tried with the North Africa campaign to a degree but it fell short. Starcraft 2 was pretty odd, I remember it coming out only for the custom games scene to die almost immediately because of the way they designed the browser for it.

I think blizzard also put in their contact for building maps in sc2 that they hold exclusive rights and can make money off of what you do and of course pissed off everyone

Yeah that might have done it as well. I guess Blizzard doesn't want another cashcow like dota slipping away even if it came at the cost of scattering the entire community to the winds. There are still people developing and mapping for WC3 which is nice but I wish it didn't have to be like this.

especially egregrious is that blizzard could have had dota, but they were just too arrogant to pay a small fraction of its value for it

it's not the worst missed investment in history, but it's up there

It's kind of amusing to see how the hubris of all these big companies is coming back to bite them in the ass in some ways with games taking ideas that executives long since dismissed only to end up exploding overnight. I wonder if we'll ever be lucky enough to see another golden age of custom maps and mods but many games are more locked down than they've ever been.

TOS. the legality of that clause is extremely dubious, but no one wants to fight activision over it - much better to just work on literally any other platform

It hurts, man. The best memories of my life were probably early high school when we'd all take our PCs to our buddy's house and play DOTA until 4 am. There were so many cool game modes. WWZ. Those games where you'd be a marine and kill zombies and your experience would persist between matches. DBZ tribute was hilarious. Hentai maze. Uther party. Life of a peasant, etc

What do you think made it so special compared to others? i constantly think about why it was so big and other games dont do it.

So far what i've come to is the game looks more easy to read and understand than any other ( Starcraft 2 was hard to understand, shit ui and the clumping of servers IMO made it be soulless )

I don't know, there's that peculiar charm same as with vanilla wow (and tbc, less so wotlk), they simply knew what they were doing in the mid 00s.

I'm thinking does the immersion play any role?, the UI right of the bat is special, the music, the sound of the menu dropping from above, the wooden look, the scene background that is the outcome of what we have seen in the trailer that hyped us.

I think it had the right level of charm and the right mechanics (Along with map editor shenanigans that people seized on) for people to expand upon it. As for the game itself it just did a lot of things right from artstyle to the way they laid out the missions.

I think that curated, more closed games have taken over because of the way the industry changed alongside the fact that it must sting the suits when they see a million dollar game spring out of their own game's map editor like that.

Have you ever heard of other games that try to give an extremely easy to get into map editor?

            Anonymous

Maybe not easy to get into but CoH 3 has a decent map editor that's apparently trying to include scenario tools as well. I think Farcry 5 had a pretty well-done map editor but Ubisoft pulled the plug on the arcade mode and let it stagnate. I imagine a lot of people find map editors like source and friends to be too fiddly and hard-to-learn but it really just takes time. I haven't really looked around for any others.

RTS will never capture that amount of custom game creation again. There are too many other competing avenues now. Shit like roblox and free game engines are much more easily accessible today.
There's no point to being constrained to an RTS when you can make your game elsewhere easier and without blizzard postured above you to take anything you make.

Woah really? Polymorph change seems busted.

I was never serious at MP but I remember playing as Night Elves against Orcs I had to win by T2 because their units had so much more damage and HP per resource I needed early hippogriff riders to level the playing field. Giving orcs earlier tauren seems to further this dynamic even more.

    >That moment when you realize Arthas and The Undead were just pawns of some lower class demon organization meant to replace Orcs who were just pawns of some lower class demon organization which is serving some space alien demon who is serving another space alien demon who is serving the Legion who is serving an even bigger space alien demon who is in actuality just trying to protect the universe from some mystery homies and also space goats or some shit

      Close but not quite:
      >Arthas/The Lich King and the Undead were created by Kil'Jaedan (Alien turned into demon) to serve as pawns to take over azeroth on behalf of the Sargeras (demi god), leader of the burning legion (Demon army) - Who wants to conquer the universe to make it one united strong force against the Void aka faceless ones factions (old who are actually not true gods but demi gods like sargeras) in deep dark space (Ironically demons in this setting do not come from hell or an afterlife, they are just created by the forces of disorder aka fel magic)
      >But it turns out the Nathrezim (Dreadlords), members of the burning legion, were actually double agents sent from the realm of death aka the REAL afterlife, to use Sargeras as a pawn, so they can corrupt world souls (The spirits of planets that eventually mature into demi gods like sargeras) with fel magic, so that when one is killed and it ends up in the afterlife, its disorderly corrupt god soul ends up shutting down the arbiter aka the Heimdall of death, so that the spirits arent sent into their proper eternal resting place
      >Instead they are sent as fuel to the leader of the Dreadlords (A literal god this time, but of the pantheon of death not life) so he can get strong and break out of his underworld prison and reach a hidden location containing an engine that created reality in the first place so he can switch it on again and pull a Thanos - tear reality down and remake it to his designs because he believes the current design is flawed and wont survive against the TRUE big bad (Again, those shadowy old void gods in deep space we've only seen glimpses of so far)

Arthas was a pawn, (Of Kil'Jaedan), who was a pawn (Of Sargeras), who was a pawn (Of the Jailer) who was actually just trying to save the universe from an evil faction we dont know much about

I miss times when I could launch WC3 and play Pokemauls, Hero Defense, various variations of Hero Areas, Footmen, Vampirism and the like. Too bad that at some point you couldn't even find any game to play because list was dominated by bots hosted Dota games. Man, I hate Dota.

Nobody will take away those memories but damn I miss them.
