They're the ones who told us it's "bad design" for FPSes to be actually about WWII, since people shouldn't be playing the bad guys ever. They functionally want every game that has to be competitive to be R6S, "just a training exercise".
>Not showing the bad guys at all reinforces just how big a threat the bad guys are
How did they manage to write a video that contradicts itself at every turn? It's fascinating
I will never get over the fact that they genuinely believe that depth isn't complexity. The only complexity that isn't depth is shit ui, but that's usually criticized anyways. I never understood that video
I can almost understand the basic point they were apparently trying to make: >just throwing more mechanics at the player without making them interact with one another or really do anything meaningful is not necessarily deep >games that try to pass off having a lot of shallow systems as having good deep systems are generally doing a bad thing
But pretending that depth and complexity are entirely different things is just ridiculous.
>makes nothing good ever
God what a shit channel. "games matter" What a gay fricking slogan. Imagine thinking vidya should be anything but entertainment.
inb4 clueless morons come in and says "their gaming stuff is really bad but their history content is really good!!"
no you moron, basically all of their history videos are running out of internet tier.
Didn't they try to say that Cleopatra was black or something? I'm sorry but I don't remember what they said was wrong, I haven't watched their history videos for like 10 years
I really don't understand the weird obsession for game design.
It's just a bunch of pseudointellectual with a massive dunning kruger effect talking some generic shit.
Did Miyamoto, Romero etc study game design?
No. They just made it fun, that was it.
Learning how a computer works and what you can do on modern hardware will help you far more for game design than this shit.
It's nice to understand why fun things are fun (when possible) because it lets you get better at guessing what else might be fun. But most "game design" youtubers are just looking for ways to retroactively justify their favorite games (or worse, whatever games most people find fun) as "objectively good".
Yes. Fun things are fun.
I just like to try and figure out why they are beyond that. It’s hard and usually subjective, but the better I am at figuring out what is and isn’t working the better I can get at thinking up new fun ideas. The old fashioned strategies of “just base games on things you found fun as a kid” don’t produce new gameplay ideas anymore, at least not ones that I’d personally want to play over a supremely well made game in a genre that’s existed for decades.
Ok but that doesn't help product new gameplay ideas either.
You either need a flash of inspiration, a new and improved iteration on something that exists or a new combination of things that exist to create some new gameplay. Watching these tards doesn't help doing that, playing games does.
This is the same level of pseudointellectualism you find in people that analyze things AFTER the fact to try to break it down when you are supposed to figure it out WHILE you are doing it.
That's the difference between fakers and actual pioneers. One does things and refines it like the art it is and the other just writes garbage all day long.
I didn’t say I watch these idiots. I (and I suspect just about anyone who actually cares about video games and has for more than a couple years) am far beyond the point where their observations are any more than surface level shit. I’m just saying that the idea of paying attention to game design and thinking logically/mechanically about what does and doesn’t work in games you’ve played is a lot more useful than “you can just tell what’s fun”.

The writer who paids to make the videos is not a game developer and neither is any of the other people who talk or drew the video.
Dan is an animation person without the technical deep coding that makes the cool games look cool.
The person who drew was a victim of James who abuse her drawing skill and paid her pannys on the dollar until she realized and quit the team with Dan.
James is just some guy who write the script for Dan to say. James doesn't even put in the effort of editing the video, someone else does that.
Extra Credits is nothing more than a scam that James is doing to earn money on youtube and paying artist little to nothing. They keep reusing the same assets and no meaningful insights.
I can tell you more about gamedev because i do make games and have experienced more than James will ever have in his lifetime.

Maybe I didn’t make it obvious enough. I was replying to someone who seemed to be denigrating the entire idea of “thinking about game design”, didn’t expressly say I wasn’t defending the idiots.
its because when working at a company, the more you can translate into numbers going up, the more support it will get from the higher ups. Focusing on things that are proven to generate numbers is essentially what EC is telling you to do
I'm not defending Youtube pseuds but things have moved on since the days of Miyamoto and Romero. Video games are more complex and varied, there is a lot more money involved, they are even used in industry for training, aptitude tests and so on. There are a lot of reasons to study game design. It's not about fun its about designing a challenge that is a fair test of skill or application.
Why do people take what some random nobody who pretends to consult on skinner box mobile games has to say about game design as though he's ever even been involved in a game you've even heard about let alone liked?
Same goes for the other major game design youtube channels like gamemakers toolkit.
Obviously I'm talking about older Extra credits, not new history extra credits.
>Guys remember the things they don't tell you about.
It's actually impressive how he siphoned so much money from morons. He makes over 10'000$ giving "advice", it's actually impressive.
Black people (or Black folk as i like to call them) are greatly offended by orcs in video games. Racist game developers MUST do something about orcs in their video games, they remind me too much of Black folk.
I love their game design "lesson" on 1-1, SM1. It is a word for word copy from an interview with Miyamoto where he went through the game design behind the first section of the level, only presented as a product of James's big brain. And as soon as they run out of material from the interview they go "well, that's enough for now, see if you can come up with the rest yourself".
I can't believe i used to watch that trash.
Everything is just generic advice after generic advice with no substance and no meat. They don't explain how to do anything and you come in and out with the same brain.
After they went all political it just went to shit.
>THE INTERNET IS RUNNING OUT! >ORC ARE BLACK BECAUSE THEY ARE MURDEROUS MANIACS! >ANITA IS A GODDESS, IGNORE HER PREVIOUS CARRER AS A CON ARTIST! >CLIMATE CHANGE IS KILLING VIDEO GAME!!! here how. >LISTEN AND BELIEVE!!
Did I miss anything?
>We are about to run out of internet
Good thing Broadband got so much traction a couple years later. Otherwise we might have ran out of bandwidth.
Is that hussie?
Used to be but it didn’t offer too many things insightful afterwards
It was never good

idk the only ones i saw were about the crusades and the shit was so poorly researched i couldnt believe it got 0 backlash
Extra credits and overly sarcastic productions taught me history 🙂
God I miss Dan

based
most of this is pseud circlejerking, if you need some gay on youtube to tell you what's fun then you're not gonna make it
the dunning kruger effect isn't what you think it is.

Every game was built off of another game. Watching some gay on youtube will not help you create a new revolutionary genre.

if I play an orc in Skyrim do I become a Black person irl?

Orcs and blacks are the same creatures btw
Black people (or Black folk as i like to call them) are greatly offended by orcs in video games. Racist game developers MUST do something about orcs in their video games, they remind me too much of Black folk.
Not every black person is a Black person but every Black person is black person.

You shouldn't listen to the opinions of someone who hasn't achieved anything themselves.

What games have they designed?
nothing and neither have GMTK, they are scammers and they just make videos telling people how a game is made in a certain way.
