Nobody played t7 at launch. It mainly got popular after a bunch of noobs got on and trained for like 3 months so they could beat up on their friends like half a year to a year after the game was out.
I feel bad for Tekken 8. They got overshadowed by Palworld. Fighting games has short life, even shorter than your traditional single-player games, and they really need that day 1 launch to be successful to boost the playerbase. But with Palworld still climbing up and beating records, Tekken 8 stode no chance.
I stopped tekken 7 with Savior. Was supposed to get to red rank but I took a break and by the time I came back I saw Tekken 8 was coming soon so I said frick it
The demo killed my love for Tekken. It was like meeting an old friend who turned into a totally different person and now you have nothing in common and its just awkward. I'm sure all the children will enjoy the explosions when they watch evo though.

Every single Soulcalibur producer has left Bamco, it is the suits that give the greenlit and they pick whoever is left hanging at Project Tekken to assist Project Soul. Harada has been a senior executive at Bandai Namco for a decade now, he is the one to call the shots for several projects besides Tekken, a Soulcalibur VII depends on his word to assign a producer after the suits give him a ok to go.

When was the last time a fighting game had this much content at launch? And no microtransactions (so far anyway.) I'm genuinely considering grabbing the Deluxe but I can't tell if that's the hype getting to me.
Training in MK1 wouldn't even let you pin moves, it's not even a fraction as robust as T8's.
You could unlock some costumes via Invasions mode but not for every character, and the ones you could get for everyone were through grinding out their Mastery, which takes ages for each character. AND the majority of unlockable outfits at launch were palette swaps. AND it manages to have an even worse method of using alt costumes than MK11, which is impressive. A lot of the "free" alts were purchasable via Krystals, of which you can earn a finite number for free. Plus there are 9 fewer characters.
Like, seriously, name one character you could unlock five unique costumes for in MK11 at launch. I'm genuinely not even sure if every character has five unique alts even now, but I'm not following MK1 as much as I was. I know the Invasion seasons are bringing new costumes but I don't think it's one for everyone each season, and many are locked behind Kombat League I thought.
Tag 2 had far more content than that and recieved lots of free DLC.
But we're not allowed to expect this much content anymore because it doesn't say "Tag" on the cover.
Can someone help me with my cognitive dissonance? I want to play and enjoy Tekken 8 and I want it to do well somewhat but the thought of moronic normalgays flooding in and doing dumb shit distresses me. IIRC Harada has a sweet spot for Anna so who knows. Her playstyle was a fricking casino when she got going because she had a great low from stance she could mix with good mids to enforce you standing still in your face.

What a weird ending. Jin just left Kazuya on the fricking rock for who knows how long and goes on a motorcycle trip with Ling and then Jun approaches Kazuya's body. And before that Kazuya and Jin had their super saiyan punch struggle and that somehow eradicated the devil gene in them. It feels like there are just scenes outright missing.
The most interesting part is that Kazuya seemed like he was about to leave Jin alive and walk away after he seemingly won, before Jin got his Persona tier social link montage.

Will Try: Azucena (i have a suspicion she is not as fun as she looks and will be a dumb unfun to fight autopilot character), Jun (she looks nasty but I always prefer her daughter), Zafina (i wasn't playing much T7 by the time she came, would love to spend some quality time with her)
Asuka is somewhat non-standard though she does have a generic df2 launcher. Her basic punish damage isn't the best but she's more about counter play and mixup. She has a ridiculous amount of CH combo starters, maybe the most (but I'm very knowledge-biased there as she's my long time main) and also an auto reversal counter-stance. So she's all about interrupting the opponent's flow and attacking from different angles. Combos are quite easy to learn as she can use the same couple of pickups and extensions from different starts.
Ling is even more specialist, and harder to play. She's incredibly evasive, most notable is her AoP stance where she gets really low to the ground. People have to change their entire approach to the matchup because she will avoid so many common tools that way. Combos are quite hard as she has unique pickups and extensions for all the various situations like starting from stances and back-turned.
Both are very fun, I'd say Ling will be much more an uphill battle as a noob, but have fun!

Fastest attacks I feel like have to be Lee, but I am not sure about that one. Other than his stances, his movement isn't really crazy from what I know.

I've been considering Yoshimitsu, but mostly because I heard he can move while sitting.
Yoshimitsu is a blast. Very unique move list. Take note that some moves cost health like the quick dodge and the literal suicide move. You also got gain health stances, but it only works against bad opponents (but has some surprise attacks from that position as bait).
The disadvantage is that skills as yoshimitsu translate poorly to other characters. But who cares, it's a good game even just as yoshimitsu.

Nobody played t7 at launch. It mainly got popular after a bunch of noobs got on and trained for like 3 months so they could beat up on their friends like half a year to a year after the game was out.
I feel bad for Tekken 8. They got overshadowed by Palworld. Fighting games has short life, even shorter than your traditional single-player games, and they really need that day 1 launch to be successful to boost the playerbase. But with Palworld still climbing up and beating records, Tekken 8 stode no chance.

When was the last time a fighting game had this much content at launch? And no microtransactions (so far anyway.) I'm genuinely considering grabbing the Deluxe but I can't tell if that's the hype getting to me.

Training in MK1 wouldn't even let you pin moves, it's not even a fraction as robust as T8's.
You could unlock some costumes via Invasions mode but not for every character, and the ones you could get for everyone were through grinding out their Mastery, which takes ages for each character. AND the majority of unlockable outfits at launch were palette swaps. AND it manages to have an even worse method of using alt costumes than MK11, which is impressive. A lot of the "free" alts were purchasable via Krystals, of which you can earn a finite number for free. Plus there are 9 fewer characters.
Like, seriously, name one character you could unlock five unique costumes for in MK11 at launch. I'm genuinely not even sure if every character has five unique alts even now, but I'm not following MK1 as much as I was. I know the Invasion seasons are bringing new costumes but I don't think it's one for everyone each season, and many are locked behind Kombat League I thought.
Tag 2 had far more content than that and recieved lots of free DLC.
But we're not allowed to expect this much content anymore because it doesn't say "Tag" on the cover.

IIRC Harada has a sweet spot for Anna so who knows. Her playstyle was a fricking casino when she got going because she had a great low from stance she could mix with good mids to enforce you standing still in your face.
Also a great low even in neutral and one really, really fricking evasive annoying as frick button that does a lot of damage. I like that despite the sisters gimmick Anna and Nina play nothing alike.

What a weird ending. Jin just left Kazuya on the fricking rock for who knows how long and goes on a motorcycle trip with Ling and then Jun approaches Kazuya's body. And before that Kazuya and Jin had their super saiyan punch struggle and that somehow eradicated the devil gene in them. It feels like there are just scenes outright missing.
The most interesting part is that Kazuya seemed like he was about to leave Jin alive and walk away after he seemingly won, before Jin got his Persona tier social link montage.

My first tekken game so this is very subject to change and mostly going off looks and/or what gameplay I've seen
Asuka is somewhat non-standard though she does have a generic df2 launcher. Her basic punish damage isn't the best but she's more about counter play and mixup. She has a ridiculous amount of CH combo starters, maybe the most (but I'm very knowledge-biased there as she's my long time main) and also an auto reversal counter-stance. So she's all about interrupting the opponent's flow and attacking from different angles. Combos are quite easy to learn as she can use the same couple of pickups and extensions from different starts.
Ling is even more specialist, and harder to play. She's incredibly evasive, most notable is her AoP stance where she gets really low to the ground. People have to change their entire approach to the matchup because she will avoid so many common tools that way. Combos are quite hard as she has unique pickups and extensions for all the various situations like starting from stances and back-turned.
Both are very fun, I'd say Ling will be much more an uphill battle as a noob, but have fun!

Fastest attacks I feel like have to be Lee, but I am not sure about that one. Other than his stances, his movement isn't really crazy from what I know.

Yoshimitsu is a blast. Very unique move list. Take note that some moves cost health like the quick dodge and the literal suicide move. You also got gain health stances, but it only works against bad opponents (but has some surprise attacks from that position as bait).
The disadvantage is that skills as yoshimitsu translate poorly to other characters. But who cares, it's a good game even just as yoshimitsu.

That sounds too hard for someone just starting out. I doubt I'll ever actually be good at Tekken. I'm just playing now because I'll enjoy it while I have other people who are shit to play with. I recently started family sharing Tekken 7 from a friend (today) and I don't think I've ever played a less intuitive fighting game. I'm having fun though, but learning wave dashes and hitting electrics is probably beyond my dumbass.

Well that's the first thing you want to look at.
You pick a character because you like how he/she looks.
Then you look if you like the fighting style, and the animations...Remember, you're gonna spend dozens of hours with that character, so you have to like and enjoy their animations.
Because you don't have any prior knowledge of the game's mechanics yet, and you don't know which play style and gameplan suits you, just go with your feelings and instincts.
Any character is strong in the right hands, so, forget about any tiers lists or the like you might see coming up in the upcoming days.
Tekken is good because contrary to many fighting games, it's pretty reasonably balanced between the cast (except the DLCs coming later...) so you always have options.
Just learn a character you feel good and comfortable with, and you enjoy to look at. Spend time in training learning combos, and its best punishes.
There are gonna be tons of video tutorials for the newbs when the game will hit on the 26th so you'll be able to learn more easily with those as well.
