The time gap between 3 & 8 is also less than five years in-universe. It's a short amount of time than the timeskip between 2&3.
I truly, REALLY hope that the shop is just an easy way to buy DLC characters from within the game, so that you don't have to leave the game and go to Steam's storefront or the PS Store to buy characters. I really hope they don't sell costume and/or cosmetics bundles that way, because the customization in the game that we got was really barebones, and I don't want to have to believe that they deliberately chopped out finished costumes/cosmetics to sell them as DLC.
I don't really care either way. The only thing that actually matters is if you can buy dlc characters individually instead of as part of a pass full of shit you don't want.
