i like it, i just really prefer the first game. i think it feels better, i like the verticality of the level design and i think it has a more unique setting. i will say that its neat that enemies can dodge your grenades and rockets in 2, and 2 undoubtedly has the better grenade launcher.

It felt weird and not as nice to play as Quake. Subjective take I know. There was also an overall aesthetic difference - quake felt more demonic and supernatural; whereas q2 felt more like a john carpenterish low budget sci fi movie world. Not that theres anything terribly wrong with that in itself, I just preferred the first.

    the guns feel crap
the maps are boring and empty
you apply any filter the textures turn into smudge soup
the enemies look cool but just bullet sponges

      Anonymous

      All of these.
But the multiplayer when it was active and the mods for it were top fricking notch.
Q2 is only questionable when played purely vanilla single player.

everything else you listed is subjective and i disagree with it, but

      >the enemies look cool but just bullet sponges
are you playing some port that changes enemies' HP or makes guns weaker? Q2 weapons shred enemies like paper targets

Loaded question, I do like WOR and it's a fairly good comeback after the soulless and generic Quake, but still has that unfocused quality of 3d FPSs where it feels like the developers separately come up with a long list of weapons, enemies and items and then just populate levels with them.

the texture smoothing decision that makes every type of surface look like its this. i remember having no interest in the game just because of the soft looking gun i could see in back of the box shots

Q2 did not inspire me, even as a young lad who only had like 6 games. I played it because I had it, I remember feeling so incredibly bored by it though. Adored Quake, crafted by gods.

It's just boring. The weapons are boring. The monster designs are boring. The whole game is visually boring despite having colored lights unlike quake 1.

I like it better than Quake 1. It is more stylistically cohesive and it does a much better job of making the player feel like they're on a mission instead of just clearing levels. The objectives are a cool addition and feeling like you're a one man army who is humanity's last hope against an alien invader is really cool. Space marine shooting at aliens wasn't overplayed in games at that point. Plus the weapons are objectively better. The rail gun is one of my favourite FPS weapons of all time. Also the music matches the tone of the gameplay better in Quake 1 the music is very atmospheric and scary but you're roaming around killing everything in sight so you're just not scared at all. I'm sure that was different when people were playing keyboard only but mouselook was a thing even when it was released and its how I've always played the game. But in Quake 2 you have an amped up soundtrack for an amped up game.

I like both games a lot. Quake 1 is one of my favourite games ever made, but I just like Quake 2 better.

I love Quake 2, I remember spending an entire thanksgiving break pirating it with my older brother over a 56k modem.

The remaster on steam is great too, it has all the expansions and net play. Playing with three other friends and running through all the campaigns is fun as hell.

I don't find Strogg or Stroggos interesting. Whole concept of "dude robots are butchering humans to turn them into more robots" just isn't visually exciting or diverse. Would rather have a big pool of random ass monsters.
Rocket launcher feels underpowered. Less intense animation/particle effects. Explosions feel like slow motion.
SSG is "improved" over Q1 yet underpowered sounds and effects dull the experience.
Annoying UI with popup hints and lame underbaked pseudo-mission system. Should have just left that kind of thing to Raven.
Poor sound propagation. Sometimes player character will just start grunting and taking damage, turns out there's a machine gunner a room away hitting you with no sound cue.
Mostly bland environments. I do enjoy some areas mostly in the early game, but it all gets too samey after a while. Endgame is a slog. Are these present to some degree in Q1 too? Yes. Do I care? No. Sequels are a chance to improve, not devolve.

It's still a better game than most of the sea of FPS slop that came after, but it'll never touch Q1's shining star.

    Pacing is kinda shit.
Q1 benefits a lot from having different worlds with their own gimmicks, once they run out of ideas the world ends and you're back at fighting grunts and having to be resourceful so stronger enemies don't overstate their welcome.
With Q2 it just feels like you've already seen everything in offer way too early.

Long range combat before you get the railgun also sucks since all of your other weapons just spread like crazy or have too much recoil yet the game has plenty of encounters with enemies that are far away.

Most enemies just aren't that much of a challenge and feel way easier than the enemies in Q1. The Tank is a fricking b***h and the Tank Commander is little more than a palette swap.

Not a bad game but it needed more polish

I had a falling out with it for a few years when I thought it was kinda lackluster and boring but I've come to appreciate its simple nature and aesthetics more recently. I still prefer the first one over the second though. The third and fourth games might as well not exist.

The base game lacks a lot of punch, it doesn’t hook you as easily as the first Doom does, and “warborgs” don’t have as broad an appeal as hell demons. The expansions helped out with making enemy attacks and AI more threatening, and I’m a fan of fighting butthole robots and cyborgs.

Back when it released I didn't care for single player. Thought the campaign was weak, the setting was unappealing and overall the game was worse than Q1.
I played a lot of Q2 multiplayer at internet cafes, but Q3 made it obsolete.
The soundtrack kicks ass though. Also, the remaster makes it a better game.

I liked the episode they added in the remaster, especially the earlier and the final maps. The first map sequence in particular, the large open base, feels like what the game should've been like. I was fully expecting the episode to end when I finished that map sequence, but there is a looooot more. Very nice.

The episode added in the remaster is easily the best episode. The original expansions are honestly pretty awful. The machine games episode is so fricking good I think I need to replay it.

played it for the first time recently with the remaster. it was so smooth and direct thay i played through the main campaign in a single sitting.

I'm more used to Quake and Source engine games but Quake II's movement feels a bit better, not sure if that's real or not.

its got the best movement in the entire series thats why action quake 2 is so good. none of the other games can match the speed you can build up in q2

I prefer Quake 1's movement. Quake 2 always felt weirdly slow after playing the first game so much.

quake 2 has the GOAT soundtrack for video games period

you can bunny hop around way faster than the first game. you build up stupid amounts of speed in q2

you dont have air control like in quake 1 but you can really fly if you can build up the speed. sloped surfaces can also be used to launch off of for big air.
I know this video uses the grapple from CTF but it was the only example I could find on youtube

              Anonymous

              >you dont have air control
I think this is why I like q1 more. It's essentially just easier and more... fun to fly around levels. So skill issue I guess.

The Remaster makes it a great game from just an ok game.

    >Fixed multiple broken enemies
    >completely reworked some of the worst enemies in the game and made them good
    >Smarter ai in general
    >Muzzle flash
    >Fast weapon switching
    >Way fancier lighting on top of the already impressive dynamic lighting

The fan maps that have came out of the remaster reviving interest have been fantastic. When you utilize all the enemies and weapons from all of the add on expansions it really squeezes all the good out of the game.

      Anonymous

I was pretty skeptical about it at first but honestly, they did a fantastic job with it. They did a lot of small touches to the gameplay without going crazy with modernizing it. I even enjoy playing it on my Steam Deck which is something I would really not have imagined as I've always preferred mouse+kb on these games.

        (Me)
Actually, I think the time slowing down on the weapon wheel is why it's so nice to play on a controller. These kinds of games really rely on you quickly switching between different weapons and this is something that is sometimes hard on a controller. That and the gyro aim.

      (not me)
May as well balance this out with what I thought sucked about it
      >The railgun. Balance is only good when it makes the game more fun, not less.
      >Grenade launcher. Not sure but I think they fricked with the trajectory? Felt wrong to me.
      >I didn't like having so many varieties of basic grunts, but by now I don't remember if they added them to base game or only the new episode. The problem is that if you're playing fast, you're switching between enemies automatically, and I had moments where the stronger grunts would keep shooting me when I thought they'd be dead already.
      > ...
      >Oh yeah, the barrels that don't explode right away. They were put in places where the player would see them when entering the room, and if he has good enough reaction he'd shoot them right away and kill a bunch of enemies. With slow burn that doesn't work.

        Anonymous

They kind of walked back the railgun in the update.

        >was 150 in original
        >Nerfed to 100 (literally wtf)
        >Buffed to 125 due to backlash

It takes two shots to kill the flying guys again. It took two shots in the original. It took like 3 in the remaster at launch.

they should aquire the rights to all the 3rd party expansions like aftershock for quake 1 and juggernaut for 2 and add those. I know it will never happen but that would be sick.
