Anything in minecraft serves only to look the part but either ends up looking oversized because of the blocks being too big or just taking space because they do nothing, the requirement for making a chair you can sit on is clipping a minecart or a pig in it which makes it noisy and ugly.
That moron of Jeb thinks more building options would limit creativity but on the contrary having more blocks with unique functions outside of redstone means having more ways to twist them into making them look the way you want to, best recent example is bonfires.

Frackin' Universe is almost a must-install at this point, and Arcana is a nice pair if you want a lot more generalized content to go with it. I'd also recommend any of the racial traits mods and at minimum one of the music replacers because the Starbound OST is utter dogshit.

there's a mechanic where using the 'correct' torch in a biome increases your luck, and a torch boss that you can beat in order to ignore this mechanic
most of the drama was over the initially released version of the torch shit, without the boss and WAY more drastic in how it harmed drop rates
