It's worth trying out more than anything else. The best quality it has is its skill ceiling is very difficult to overwhelm an entire server with, like you can play better but it'll take more than one guy to just stomp spawn completely. Sniper is the exception to this, but 90% of them suck complete ass.
If you for some reason find playing games with the morons of Ganker is fun, sure. Public matches are full of bots and hackers thoughever.

Like half the games I play in casual matchmaking have a blatant 'secret' cheater in them, but most players are too inexperienced to notice them and you can't convince them. It's pretty obvious when you see a player moving around like a clueless moron but some how aiming/airblasting perfectly.
Ive run into the same 1 or 2 heavy cheaters with a pocket medic on 2fort and nobody on their team can kick them cause their friends stop the vote

Coming from a vet, yeah. At the very least it's a good side game to chill in. Very unlike other shooters today where they're geared towards competitive.
Though it's gonna be overwhelming to start off with, between 9 classes, a boatload of weapons, and maps. Not even counting custom content. And the default settings still stick to 2007. Just keep that in mind.
For what it's worth, I see lots of players that joined in the past couple years, there's still plenty of vets but it's not like older arena shooters where it's you vs quake dads with 20 years of experience.

no, most of the stock weapons are good
TF2's weapon design philosophy is that the unlockable weapons are supposed to be side-grades to the stock weapons, or offer different playstyles
very few unlock weapons are outright upgrades over the stock weapons
If you buy a single key off marketplace.tf for like 1.95 you can instantly trade that for enough metal to get every weapon in the game and tons of basic hats which no other game would ever let you do
You'll be at a slight disadvantage, vanilla melees will hold you back on any class other than spy or engineer, and nobody uses engineer's default pistol so that will hold you back a bit as well.

Stock weapons are generally the best.
Most exceptions are usually because the utility (swapping out a syringe gun for Medic to instead use a Crossbow for projectile healing like Ana for example, swapping out Heavy's shotgun for food items that heal him or other side effects, etc)
Aside from that weapons are either situational sidegrades (A rocket launcher that trades splash damage for projectile speed and more direct hit damage), or open up a new playstyle for a class (Swapping stickybombs for a shield to play as a Demoknight)
You can earn weapons just from playing, though there's a weekly cap of 8 I think.
You can earn some from achievement milestones. You can craft them. Buying them isn't recommended, the store is overpriced. Just trade for them in bulk with a key if you have to.

You'll do fine, and it's actually better if you play with stock before using any other weapons since they teach you how to play your class and fit the best in every situation.

You can get all the weapons by buying a 2 dollar key => trade it to a bot for a bunch of metal => that metal to buy all the weapons from another bot (with plenty leftover for a bit of fashion)

TF2 is an incredible achievement. It's arguably (and likely) the best online shooter ever made. With 9 classes, each of whom have dozens (or more) of different weapon combinations & loadouts, it can be completely overwhelming at first (it took me probably 30 hours or so before it started to "click")... the game itself is like some kind of shuddering, organized Chaos Engine. Yet it's not chaotic. It's beautifully and thoughtfully crafted, it's bursting with personality (both from the characters and the players), it has tons of excellent maps, every single class is fun and rewarding. I could go on. I have almost 4,000 hours in the game now and though I don't play it daily anymore I still laugh out loud every time I play it. I don't think there is a game that's more fun, more exciting, more rewarding to git gud at than TF2.
yes, but don't play it for extended periods of time. tf2 is like minecraft; it's fun in bursts but if you play it too much it'll get frustrating for one reason or another.

i was broke when i was playing tf2 so this doesn't matter to me anymore but i checked my backpack the other day and i have about a dozen refined that i should have traded up to keys at the time it was crafted because the keys would have been worth a ton more now.
i legitimately feel like the item drop system was my favorite addition to the game. it rewards you pennies of value for just playing the game, which you can completely ignore, or be a complete israelite and get cash out of it. you also have a small chance of getting cosmetics or tools from it, or over time you can just craft your unloved drops into a cosmetic. i played from launch day and a lot of people will hate me for stating this however. i didn't find it bothersome at all.
the buildup of crates is kinda annoying though since i never spend money on tf2. i could either send them over to an idle account or sell them but they really frick up your inventory.

I reinstalled it and played it for a bit earlier. I got it back in 2007 with the orange box when I was a teenager and played a fair bit until the pyro update came out and they added stuff like the flare gun, I tailed off after that and didn't have a gaming PC for a while.
I tried playing it again a couple of years back and all the changes to it were weird. I played an hour or two earlier today, it's alright. Feels different to how it was when I used to play, maybe that's just not being on a forum that would set up regular games and stuff so it's just playing with strangers.
It's annoying how many different custom servers and things there are when you use the browser, like it seems 9/10 servers are some weird game mode or 24/7 fast respawns mvm things.

This. The game was already turning from fun fps to hat collecting obsession by 2010. That being said, I tried the game out again a few days ago and it feels more fun than it did in 2010.
Changes to TF2 was always mix of good and bad ideas. It's hard to imagine there being an ideal period that can be considered a golden age for that reason.
For example moveable engineer buildings was such a good addition that it's hard to call a version of a game without it ideal and yet even that very update introduced the cancer that was mini sentries.
I agree with this. Besides Meet your Match, there are few updates I would consider bad, even if there were things in them I disliked. It was part of what made playing TF2 Classic a mixed bag for me: there were many things added later that I realized I did miss.
Meet your Match did suck though. Terrible changes to server browsing that killed most community servers and awful balance decisions. I also wish they would do at least some minor tweak to the sniper. There's far more good snipers then there were at launch and it's clear the game was not balanced with such talent in mind.

Point and click is a universal skill. There are not really "more" good snipers now, there are just more cheaters. You do not "get better" at sniper over time like you would with a soldier. There is nothing much to learn other than clicking on heads, which is already 99% muscle memory.

By all means you're allowed to think the class is badly designed and fun killing and broken and all that jazz, and even that it's bad having a class that is so susceptible to cheating and botting, I'd be inclined to agree with you even. But in the end he's still a class that 99% of the playerbase can't play for shit, arguably the most important balancing factor behind him being that good snipers aren't common. That automatically means there is room to improve with him for the average player.
In fact it sums up tf2 the best that the one class that really takes skill is not fricking respected for it, and no that is not a complement to sniper.

I started playing (on PC) in 2008 and I'd consider the original class updates as the golden age. Personally I thought of the silver age as being from when they introduced the store up to maybe around Meet the Pyro, whenever that was. At that point I noticed most of my favorite community servers were dying. When they introduced matchmaking the game went into a proper dark age.

The biggest issue with MyM was repurposing Valve servers for Casual. Frick I wish they'd undo that already and scrap matchmaking entirely.

Honestly the one thing people want is some rebalancing and new weapons. The massive amounts of new maps and alternate modes are very nice, but the one thing that puts life in to ALL aspects of the game is new/adjusted weapons.

The golden age is still alive, you just have to boot it up on the Xbox 360 orange box copy. Instantly get teleported to 2007, the way the game was MEANT to be played.
I started playing during beta and the only update I think was good was spy cloak = ammo pickups, maybe shooting demo nades was ok too. there was a minor necessary nerf to soldier ammo and demos are kinda op from the start but other than that all the updates were shit. I stopped playing sometime before 2012 so shave a couple years off that and there's the golden age

It honestly depends, but for my money the golden age started right after the Uber Update, and ended sometime shortly after Gun Mettle/Tough Break. Anything before Uber Update is kinda like the Middle Ages, and anything after Gun Mettle/Tough Break is been the decline period, with Meat Your Match being the cataclysmic event that almost wiped out the whole civilisation. TF2 will NEVER get back to her golden age, but it might be in a renaissance of sorts.

Release to F2P era is the definitive golden age. You had meet the team videos coming out, you had class updates that gave each class new weapons, you have big game changing abilities constantly coming out like Pyro got the ability to airblast, Engi got to pick up buildings, cool events like the WAR update. It felt awesome to play back then because Valve actually cared about TF2 as a game rather than using it as a testing ground for monetisation schemes. Hats were rare and fit the style of the game and the game wasn't as "solved" as it is now. People didn't spycheck as often and didn't know the best sentry spots and you never had a 9000 hour sniper main raping the entire server.
I pity newbies who only know nu-tf2.

IDK I disagree. Nowadays most people can instantly just tell you are a spy when your are disguised whereas disguises did used to actually work with little effort before. You have to think much more about how you act, what class you disguises as etc and the fact that enemy team gets wallhacks to see you when they spawn. Actual "good" players would religiously spy check but good players were much rarer than they are now

The thing that makes me sad is that once upon a time TF2 was a passion project, a game that Valve genuinely loved.
Despite them abandoning it years ago, the community has stuck around and keeps playing it. TF2 transcends beyond being a game. No-one is going to remember DOTA 2 or CSGO once they're gone. They just lack the same cultural impact and influence that TF2 has.
If CSGO didn't receive constant updates, most players would have probably returned to CS:S.

I used to hate the matchmaking but honestly after playing for the first time in like 6 years its nice to not play on fricking 24/7 dustbowl 2fort hightower and actually have a match again
TF2 always had official valve servers and before matchmaking was a thing you could always find valve servers that ran the desired map. All matchmaking did was force a wait on everyone and prevent certain capabilities like being able to check a server doesn't have bots before you join.

Quickplay could either put you in valve servers or community servers depending on how strict your settings were, I believe.

I don't know when exactly they became the only servers for quickplay, but community servers became so bad that you basically had to use Valve servers for a vanilla experience. Unfortunately this siphoned people off from decent community servers and now MyM has made Valve servers just as horrible. Very cool.

I think it depends on the hours you play at, in Europe it's fine during daytime and then it becomes a bot hell at night.

It's a shame so few people regularly play new community content. Before the update, it took weeks for the VSH Vscript server to get to where it'd have 24 players, and those peak hours were pretty narrow for a long while. The map statistics showed that most of the favorites for the potential summer update maps were also not really played too often in community map pools; most people stick to the same custom content they've been playing for a decade
Hell, if you look at the in-match numbers, community servers barely even got a bump from the update. The peak before the update? 6,500 community players. Post-update? 7,200. The vast majority of the people who started to play again are sticking to Official servers, where the peak went from 10.3k pre-update to 17.8 post-update.

The TF2 dev commentary is honestly one of my favorite behind-the-scenes stuff. It's not the work of a bunch of geniuses, but also years of fine-tuning and testing and fundamental understanding of how FPS players act.
It's not a coincidence that a lot of rejected ideas that they said would make the game slower and unfun like Scout being able to catch-and-return enemy projectiles, the bear trap or the tranquilizer gun was implemented somewhere in Overwatch's various kits.
Being from 2007 is TF2's saving grace. The core game was designed before they got the idea of microtransactions so its internals are solid, and being from an era where community servers were the norm means it can live forever.
Later games will always suffer from being designed with monetization in mind in preproduction, and no fun allowed official servers only so they can just kill the game.

Played on a 100 guys server like two days ago and if more than 10 people was using the mic at the same time, like half of the players got kicked. We used it as some sort of spell the lessen the lag or kick unwanted players. One homosexual micspammed child porn for like 1 hour straight. Gameplay was still fun tho.
It has gone a long way in those two days, it's actually playable now if you live near the server.

I recommend trying out one of the new 100 player servers. It's absolute pandemonium and a blast. If the lag is too much for you, 64p servers tend to run pretty well and those are great as well

Artifacts and Underlords were both trying to cash in on fads. Artifacts because Hearthstone was going strong for years (and Shadowverse does well on steam too), so Valve tried making their own TCG.
Underlords was trying to cash in on the autochess fad. Ultimately it failed because... Valve just randomly stopped updating the game. Game genuinely had better QoL than TFT but they simply gave up on it so it died.
So it's easy to see why both of those got made, Valve did think they WOULD make money in the long run, because their contemporary's do in the same niche, but then they just gave up on both titles.

I love using the backscatter for this reason. I've honestly come to appreciate it a lot more as a result. I feel like it's not as shit as I once thought, but it still demoralizes the frick out of some people.
Is there any hack that lets a Spy backstab while invisible or was I just up against a really, really good Spy? I spychecked everywhere constantly and even switched to Pyro to do it, but kept getting backstabbed the second I looked away.
I've never come across a hack like that but I suppose it could be possible. I think it's more likely that he was just running circles around you.
Not sure if this is what was happening to you, but there is a bug where sometimes after lagging some players may become invisible to you.
Sometimes l get a bug that makes an enemy player invisible, maybe the same happened to you?

The splendid screen's extra bash damage could make the difference between killing a heavy or not. Also means your post-explosion attacks are better.
Faster charge recharge makes it faster to get back to the front if you die or get back to spawn for a new caber if you don't.

this thing can one-shot light classes if you're hit by it twice (a direct hit makes the flare bounce, then hit again in a radius once it hits the ground. you're stunned if you're directly hit by it, so in those situations, a two-hit is pretty much guaranteed.), and if you let it do a full afterburn.

If you're a light class then you're either nowhere near the pyro whatsoever, wherein you can just kill him or leave unabated, or you're countered by the pyro anyways so it matters very little whether he used the scorchshot when all of his other weapons are designed to ruin you just as easily. Game already gives you a million different ways to counter afterburn too, so it's not like you're helpless to act if you get hit once.

There was a good update that put it back in the public mindscape. The game is good on its own, it just needs things to make people pay attention to it every now and again.

i'm a tf2 nostalgiagay but after playing it a bunch recently i've come to the realization that the game is pretty shit and always was
what it has going for it is that the majority of the playerbase plays primarily for fun and not the meta/matchmaking autism that's going on in other games
also backstabs, airshots, headshots, stickytraps and meatshots will always make good chemicals in my brain

I have a 2008 main menu mod and the no hats mod. I don't bother with Valve servers (and surprisingly enough, I've not seen a single bot in a yeat)
It's sufficient enough for me.
Now I just wish there were more servers than ran custom maps. Kogasatopia is good, but Gankerners are homosexuals. Uncletopia is good, but no custom maps.

uncletopia expanded their servers a lot recently and now have a custom map server in most regions
it's mostly the popular longstanding community maps that haven't made it into the game yet but there a few up and coming maps that are still being actively developed

if you're playing a 100 person server you don't really have to worry about the ping disadvantage of playing on NA
playing with 130ms ping feels like total shit by itself, let alone with whatever bottleneck 100 man servers bring
