I might check both but I just wanted to hear some opinions first.
I know for sure I'm not playing vanilla or whatever you want to call it.
Open Fortress is really fun but not TF2. It's actually secretly Q3A using a bunch of TF2 assets. It shares voice actors and half-a-devteam with TF2C and is pretty well put together for the most part. It's definately worth checking out alongside TF2C.

it actually did. DM mode was originally made for TF2C and made it into the original B4 release back in 2016. They split into two projects after that.

Which is TDC and not OF
OF came way later after the split when someone was trying out modding Source 2013 to replace TDC, which had gone extremely private after not letting TF2C members that wouldn't contribute to it inside.
OF came out of ripping off TDC with the purpose of replacing it, it did not come out of TF2C, and it does share TF2C members because the source engine community is aids and if you have the connections you can get inside anywhere, and OF was lacking useful members at the start and they desperately looked into using TF2C devs as a start

Yeah, I've been watching some videos and seems like a different game but looks interesting.
It was fun for an afternoon but eventually just reminded me that the game I loved is gone and isn't coming back.
played for a while, got bored, uninstalled.
