how is playing community "the way the things were intended?" Any triple A multiplayer game should have at least a functioning multiplayer. I'm not asking for a new content update anymore on par with Jungle Inferno. Just anything to stop the damn bots

Because the game launched with a server browser, the standard for PC FPS games at the time, and only ever added matchmaking because of e-celeb obsessed children who couldn't figure out how to play a game without matchmaking. How old are you?

Try not joining servers hosted and moderated by 12 year olds? This is what I mean, people like you are too stupid to use a server browser. Why would Valve want to cater to the current playerbase, you're all idiots!

well thing is it should be expected that at least official servers should be working. CSGO is 10 years old and has fine servers mostly. DOTA 2 is old L4D2 is similar age to TF2.

                Anonymous

It would be nice if the official servers worked. Its nowhere near "expected." It's been 15 years. 5 years from now will you be mad if the official servers were to go down? 5 years from then? You need to get real. You made a comparison to triple A games, the only reason those have matchmaking for so long is because the israelite devs refuse to give anyone the server binaries and host servers for themselves. How many AAA games you know that simply don't have a way to play them at all anymore? Spoiler alert, its a fricking lot. Be grateful that TF2 can literally never die, and quit acting like the game needs saving. The community can even do content updates now with leaked source code, there are no excuses.

Despite what fanboys like to think, valve is not omniscient nor omnipresent. They can't stop the flow of software over the internet. Also, give it a few years and they'll care less and less that the community fixes the game for them. This is the end GOAL of any good FPS game, to have it firmly in the hands of the community to ensure an endless lifespan. It wasn't that long ago when TF2 was getting constant updates and people just b***hed and moaned about how "out of touch" valve was with the community. Now that same community wants those updates again.

                >I imply everyone who disagrees with my opinions is stupid so people will take me seriously

                Its objective fact.

yeah but now valve even seems to not care about community updates anymore. TF2 Classic and Open Fortress literally killed by valve. Tons of fanmade weapon concepts and other shit no interest either. If Valve really does not care then just give the reins over to the community. Wasn't there that "team comtress" shit where they fixed all the bugs and even had some anti-bot solutions?

Community servers wereshit and the game was massively improved with quick play which is essentially the same thing we have now moron.
The only really bad things added is transitions between games.
Before a game would end and derver changed map and you just kept playing but now you have to stare at a map vote,, score list then wait the 120 seconds countdown when the next map loads and stricter score limits so games end way too soon

Imagine getting filtered by the server browser to the extent that you never found the servers where you developed connections with all the regulars as you played experimental custom gamemodes and everybody enjoyed themselves just fricking around.
Imagine needing a corporation to curate which maps you're allowed to play on.
            >quick play which is essentially the same thing we have now
No adhoc connections automatically makes it shit and inferior to quickplay. And the 3 round system is completely redundant when mapvote exists.

This. Thanks to custom tf2 i made some lasting friendships. Tf2 basically died, but we still chat and play and even visit eachother at times. And it took days and weeks of playing together at the same server at first.

              Anonymous

Matchmaking is a plague when it comes to "small" multiplayer games

              Server browsers are objectively superior

CS was better when the main way to play was playing on Community Server. It led to the creation of inhouse leagues, clans, etc.

Dota was objectively better when it was lobby based. Same thing, communities (PDIH, Dotalicious, frick even /vg/ inhouses

Same for Battlefield, CoD, you name it. Even WoW. Matchmaking only works for 1v1 games like Starcraft.

Server/Lobby based games allowed you to actually get better at the game, because occasionally youd play against better players. They'd also be less annoying, since you mostly played with people that after a while you'd recognise.

With matchmaking, not only is it more annoying because you get random morons every game, you cant even improve in a meaningful way, because you always play against people that are +/- 5% the same skill as you are

you have server binaries and vulns get patched after getting reported. Do yourselves a favor and band together under a single open source client instead of the 30 flavors you have right now. Do your own security + content. You can't expect valve to update the game forever and the sooner you go independent the better.

Valve continues to monetize the game indefinitely. If they sell $XX.XX worth of keys, hats, MvM/Contract passes, etc. etc., then I wanna see $XX.XX level of support. Either that, or sign off on community updates. They did it with Left 4 Dead 2. They did it with Alien Swarm. Other companies do it with games much older than TF2. It's quite silly not to do it for the one game everyone points at as being broken and can't be approved for Steam Deck as a result.

I don't even want the game to change. I don't want to learn about whatever percentage changes to whatever. I don't want to see new weapons that might break shit where we have to play the waiting game for another patch. I don't want sweeping changes to a character just because they drew the short end of the stick. I genuinely have enjoyed the game knowing that some shit isn't going to completely throw a wrench into it because the last time was that stupid as frick Meet Your Match garbage. I don't even want to imagine what happens if they actually do start updating it because the people in their ear are going to be desperate compgays or big-headed content creators on an ego trip. I don't even care about the bots, I just have no interest in watching a very obvious team stacks roll onto Valve servers with no scramble as it becomes a never ending run of stomps and loading screen/queue shit and I have no interest in giant janky community servers like Skial or the ones tied to some specific concept like furrypound or Uncletopia.
