just wanted a videogame console, who the frick was this for
>There was finally a convention in town a while ago >Actually bothered to go downtown >The light never went on once >I have two fricking pink pieces left for puzzle swap
You missed the boat, sadly. I'm guessing 3ds streetpass activity was going well until the Switch came out. I went to my first (and only) anime convention around 2015-2016 and practically filled my shit up with streetpass hits and had to get rid of some to make room for others. The main reason I brought my 3ds for streetpass hits was for Animal Crossing NL and filling out the streetpass lots.
this shit was like crack back when I was in college. I would get like 40-60 street passes every day it was fun and a unique social experience. Idk why they stopped doing stuff like this it's so awesome.
i refuse to believe anyone ever actually got use out of streetpass, i got one connection over all these years but theres people talking here like theyd get a whole army of people each day
Moved into an apartment and the couple above my wife and I always had their DSs on. We’d street pass them every single day and take our devices with us to the mall and stuff when we’d go out. Didn’t get an army but always got several hits after coming back.
There was an exploit in SMT IV/IV:A that let you keep a demon through NG+ using Street Pass without having to buy them again/fuse them. That's the only use I got out of it
Live in a shit town next to other shit towns and used to keep it my pocket when I went to rummage sales on the weekends back in 2014-17, got tons of passes and was able to finish a good amount of the puzzles and the RPG mode.
>Inconvenient enough and no incentive to take it with you any where >Touch screen that's annoying to use in handheld mode and impossible to use docked >Basically NO OS level features >Only feature available to frick around with is Gyro and it's not used outside of specifically gimmick titles or sploon
Why does the Switch suck so fricking hard
Is it because the Wii U and 3DS were so good?
it's going to get worse before it gets better
switch being an ungodly success assures that nintendo will go full-moron next gen, take a few hits during that time, then straighten out after it's over
Gyro is still gaining traction in console gaming. Slowly, but it's there. There are ported (not first-party) games on Switch that has good Gyro-aiming, Risk of Rain 2 is one that stands out. It salvaged the game for me because it's way too chaotic late-game and joysticks alone don't cut it.
Gyro-aim for macro adjustments, and the sticks for the fine-tuning micro adjustments is the sweet spot.
Don't be surprised when the next gen consoles all have gyro sensors in their controllers and is praised as the next big thing. Basically like the joystick..and motion controls.
It should've happened already, one of the main reasons I haven't gotten a Series S is the controller lacking any of this stuff and the lack of the physical disc reader.
It's also good that, though underutilized, PS still has gyro, I wouldn't have been surprised if they had dropped it for this gen.
Ikr. I'm waiting for MS to put gyro sensors on their controllers. I'd buy one for my pc, but until then I'm sticking with cheaper third-party xbone controllers.
Sony seems half in/out with gyro, but I dunno. I know the ps4 controller reports gyro inputs faster/accurately when wired on pc, not sure if it's the same when gaming on the console itself. I hope they improved that on the PS5 controllers.
It's wild though with all the hate towards gyro-aim. I enlightened my friends with it when they were playing Fortnite on xbox. I joined the party and showed them the gyro aiming and they were shitting on it at first, but changed their minds when they saw it in action. They aren't the pc gaming types, but they recognized it was as accurate as kb/m. Combining gyro with the sticks is something that doesn't register with a lot of people, sadly.
i dont hate wiii u had so much potential. i feel like the wii u's failure is what prompted nintendo to trick the frick out of the 3ds tho especially towards the latter half of its life
>went downtown multiple times for my job starting in like 2013 >went every day, at least 2 times per day during peak hours >for over a year >got like 3 total streetpasses
This shit sucks.

Streetpass was great, but it made me remember that there are some crazy fricking people around me. Wonder if I can find any screenshots I took.

and that was after the switch had already launched. shit felt magical at first, after a while i just stopped clearing the hits out and let most games sit at the limit because it took too long to do every day. i cleared streetpass quest 1 and 2 several times.
I remember using the coins on the claw game for stickers and stuff for the menu and for playing the Mii RPG thing. That was amazing
Also I'm still sad my shit country didn't have tomadochi life and I even went and asked a store to get it and they didn't
I didn't even know about hacked games back then too
>playing mario kart 7 (i think) >japanese name send me friend request >accept >is a japanese girl who uses swapnote like a diary, posting everyday (with photos) about her day

That was when I gave up on the system
You gotta go to comic/anime/vidya conventions. Thats where you get the big numbers. Every time I went to one I would get like 40-50 streetpasses easy. Of course now it's kinda too late since the 3DS is not used as widely anymore but you could probably get like 5-10 still.
>Girlfriend and I both enjoyed the 3DS >I bought her Fantasy Life when she was sick and homebound for six months >Years later, we would lay in bed together and play on our 3DSs on weekend mornings
I miss those times.
I doubt I'll look back on my Switch with the same sense of nostalgia. All I remember is the fan breaking and me having to put the Switch on the windowsill to play SMT5.
Yeah it's almost like actually getting to know people and not getting turned into inhuman completely interchangeable marginally smarter bot players by some matchmaking algorithm bullshit is, kinda cool actually?
Going to Anime Expo in Los Angeles from 2011-2015 with my 3DS was really fun, there were hundreds of Streetpasses every day. I remember in 2011 I was going through them and someone's message was "Westin Room 310" or something like that, and I told my friends I was gonna go because why not, and they had to stop me and explain rape to me. I was 14.
I can't find my PSP but I know it's in my house somewhere, I dread the day I wake up to find the place in flames because my game machine fricking exploded.
Reminder if you're storing your handhelds for an extended amount of time to remove the batteries from them. It'll save your console if the battery swells.
I was one of those people that didn't turn on my 3ds until I wanted to play games and always got that green light going off when I did. I think most didn't put their 3ds on standby at all is the reason it's difficult now.
it's a shame the 3DS eshop is closing, alongside the wii u. there are a ton of games on 3DS that need to be remastered and Kid Icarus is one of them. i had to download smash 3ds due to the cartridge being faulty.
>spilled water on 3DS >use those silicon gels >still works
can't believe that was years ago. too bad the switch is a subscription service with shitty online.
>looking through my old streetpasses recently >find one from 2012 >wait a second that name >it's the girl I had a crush on in college >except this was two years before I started college
Pretty big coincidence considering she lived on the other side of the country and I rarely brought my 3DS out with me.
Only thing I remember about streetpass is it made 3ds' standby battery life even more terrible. Granted I was spoiled by owning a Vita prior which can sleep mode for a whole fricking month and still have 50% battery.
Dual monitor setup here. Netflix'd on one, FFXI on the other. I should dust off my Vita though and finish Soul Sacrifice Delta at some point. Why the frick did Sony never ported/sequel'd that to PS3 or PS4 is beyond me.
I'm missing like 1 piece from the OOT 3D puzzle and never got it. I went to shitty Philly to try and after walking around for 2 hours the only thing i got was the idea to never got to Philadelphia ever again.
What happened with the 3ds's general perception, both among normalgays and spergs?
I'm only 20 and even I remember the 3ds shitstorm at launch. Now it's all gravy, but the wiiu never got its redemption arc like the 3ds did.
>The 3DS is a good handheld at it's core
It's a poorly designed handheld (why the frick is the d-pad in the most uncomfortable position) with its primary gimmick being forgotten in its later years. Its OS was slow also, especially up against both the Vita.
Well regarding the 3ds, people just remember the good parts/times I guess? The launch was generally fine, I remember the fiasco with the gba games though.
>wiiu never got its redemption arc like the 3ds did.
It did, it's the Switch. Nintendo fumbled soo hard with wii U, and Switch was their reboot in that console generation. I think it's a mixed blessing in the end because it bumped them off the conventional console generation cycles. The similarities with the Wii U and Switches concept designs are hard to ignore. Though I feel their approach with the UI, more specifically the mii social network thing was a dead-end. I played my friend's wii U around Switch launch and I recall it being desolate and depressing, since the majority playerbase was on Switch (or just offline and moved on). So I think that's why they went with the soul-less UI for Switch, since it unironically still ages better than what they tried in the wii U.
The problem with the Miiverse stuff on WiiU was how fricking slow the WiiU was about navigating to anything on its OS. If that was integrated into its core and loaded in a snap, I'd have probably fricked with it more.
It is a moderation nightmare though to keep paying staff for monitoring user content, given Nintendo has to keep shit PG-friendly.
It got a price cut and then got games. Animal Crossing was the point I remember it going from a console in trouble to a success. Then Pokémon X and Y came out a few months later and secured its popularity. The Wii U got fricking nothing. It had that Animal Crossing plaza app which many took to be a teaser for a full game, which not only never happened but Amiibo Festival happened instead. Everyone had high hopes for Star Fox Zero, especially when it was revealed that Platinum worked on it, and when that flopped, so did any remaining hope for the system. Simply put they neglected the Wii U too much and wasted resources on borderline shovelware titles (the 3DS was guilty of this too later in its life but by that point it was already a success). Though in fairness it did have good games in Splatoon, Mario Maker and Smash Bros. so an Animal Crossing or earlier Breath of the Wild release might not have saved it anyway.
For me it was Monster Hunter 3U coming out alongside the XL. An utter deathblow for the VIta, considering how important MH was for the PSP.
Shit, merely two of the five MH games on the 3DS almost outsold the entire VIta's library.
why is there no personality in the switch? >shitty bland ui >no eshop music >no miiverse type application >no sense of community >no animated logos
AAAAAAAAAAAA I HATE MINIMALISM
>bought 3ds day one in 2011 >streetpass was rare during the first year but eventually picked up steam >2013-2015 I got 20-30 a day walking around my college campus >Always bring my 3ds on business trips >Ever since the switch launched I get less and less streetpasses >Most recent trip in may 2022 I didn't get a single one >Finally get a switch lite 2 months ago >It's a soulless tablet compared to the 3ds
wtf happened bros? why can't consoles have fun extras anymore?
weird how ds/3ds software use the full extend of the touch screen. Meanwhile newest mobile "games" (with the latest snapdragon, full touch screens and 4G connectivity ) are always casino-style scams

my question still remains unanswered
Oldest zoomers were born in 96, idiot.
This what happens when you take the meaning of a word away and use it purely as an insult.
Lmao, you made my day.

sorry i dont mingle with poor people or black criminals.
I was in college in 2011 and got hundreds per semester.
I got like 3 or 5 whenever I went into town. It felt special.
Moved into an apartment and the couple above my wife and I always had their DSs on. We’d street pass them every single day and take our devices with us to the mall and stuff when we’d go out. Didn’t get an army but always got several hits after coming back.

I started taking my 3DS to college and when leaving back home I'd always have the visits maxed out.
The Switch would have been god tier if it only had this. Even better let me carry only a joycon and have it keep track until I get home.
I was just thinking to myself, how come I'm nver bringing my switch anywhere? I think this is the reason why.

3DS might be my favorite system next to the NES from Nintendo
It's my favorite handheld for sure, and that's saying something considering how much I loved my PSP. I'd have to put the SNES on top still however.
it's going to get worse before it gets better
switch being an ungodly success assures that nintendo will go full-moron next gen, take a few hits during that time, then straighten out after it's over
the never-ending cycle
I don't think there will be a new nintendo console for a decade.
Oh and no 3D of course.
Well, yeah, but 3D home displays fricking died because morons though 3D media was a replacement for 2D, and not something that has its own purpose.
3D feature was lame as frick
It was awesome. Didn't you play Sonic 2 in 3D? Can't go back to inferior versions.
I will not stand for this gyro slander. switch is probably the console with the most games that have gyro included

3ds was the last good nintendo console and nintendo died with iwata. switch is fricking soulless
Fool that you are, the Wii U existed.
Even now in it's severely gimped state it fricks.
i dont hate wiii u had so much potential. i feel like the wii u's failure is what prompted nintendo to trick the frick out of the 3ds tho especially towards the latter half of its life
Gyro will probably be user in prime 4 at least
r-right?
>genuinely liked Market Crashers and it's shit to play without regular Street Pass hits.
what happens if you have cfw and you streetpass someone with a homebrew as your most recent game, what do they see?
The game I'd assume. I had two kinds of cfw and both displayed the game's icon on the start menu.
They see the homebrew, whatever title it comes up as in the fw. I had a DS supercard and it came up as some shovelware game.

Held out for the XL, didn't disappoint.

you know, I think that WAS his name
I was friends with that dude for years.
He got so much weirder than that man. Showed me this genderbent Webber OC and the thousands of others he has.
This really is a small world. He's a nutcase, for the record.
Wew, what are the odds?
Glad you survived.
why does that give me he same vibes as pic related
yeah, I see it too

It doesn't? What happened?
Nintendo shut down the Streetpass Relay server that connected to public hotspots.
>that guy that called you out irl after you tagged each other
What should I get on the 3DS eshop before it goes down? I have severely underutilised my 3DS over the years.
You should hack your 3DS because it takes like five minutes and is a really good idea.

No, I was one of the morons afraid of banning and bricking, I got into it later on
i'm still looking for my new 3ds
i lost it years ago
How?
like i said, i lost it years ago alongside with my copy of sonic rush adventure
But how did you lose it? Did you just get home one day and it was gone?
yeah pretty much
I remember going to mcdonalds with my gf so we could get those drive thru streetpasses and beat that dungeon mii streetpass game

Yeah, the Switch just isn't as comfy. I still like it... but I don't play it nearly as much, and recently I've mostly been playing my GBA or n3DS.

what? people aren't allowed to buy phones in your country?
I was one of those people that didn't turn on my 3ds until I wanted to play games and always got that green light going off when I did. I think most didn't put their 3ds on standby at all is the reason it's difficult now.
i swear i had an Iwata amiibo visit my streetpass, but it's nowhere.
That was a thing through spotpass, I had a reggie one too.
it's a shame the 3DS eshop is closing, alongside the wii u. there are a ton of games on 3DS that need to be remastered and Kid Icarus is one of them. i had to download smash 3ds due to the cartridge being faulty.
I hated streetpass features. You have to live in an overpopulated shithole, Tokyo or a convention center to even use it in anyway.
why does nintendo make features that will eventually go defunct? I feel the Switch was something the Wii U couldn't.
no matter how fun the 3DS may have been I will never forgive Nintendo for putting a region lock on a fricking PORTABLE CONSOLE
I agree, I'm glad they learnt their lesson with the switch, right? Because they learned their lesson, right?
this shit was so gay, frick off and let me play my children's games in peace
>spilled water on 3DS

can't believe that was years ago. too bad the switch is a subscription service with shitty online.
Is it? People pay money to use the Switch's online functions?
The alternative is routing the LAN functionality through a tunnel. Which DOES work, but is annoying to do.
Hey, I used to do that on my PSP. But it does work? Free online? Does it work with a cracked switch?
Given how totally unreported LAN features tend to be, it wouldn't surprise me if you couldn't even get banned via it.
I miss streetpass so fricking much
>looking through my old streetpasses recently
>find one from 2012
>wait a second that name
>it's the girl I had a crush on in college
>except this was two years before I started college
Pretty big coincidence considering she lived on the other side of the country and I rarely brought my 3DS out with me.
you ever wonder what became of those people?
Prolly dead from the coof or radicalized by the changing times.

Quick share your streetpass, aka the game you just played
Europe Universalis 4 here, formed Scandinavia and became emperor of the HRE
i cant believe how optimistic the world felt around 2011-2014ish
This ruined every fricking game it was forced into that wasn't a top 5 seller.
i wish gurumin was on sale
Only thing I remember about streetpass is it made 3ds' standby battery life even more terrible.
Granted I was spoiled by owning a Vita prior which can sleep mode for a whole fricking month and still have 50% battery.
Unsurprising that Vita owners would go a month without using the system.
I only ever used my handhelds when I didn't have access to my PC, which is very rarely. My 3DS had just as much downtime as my Vita did between uses.
I used to play my 3DS while putting on some youtube video on my PC.
Dual monitor setup here. Netflix'd on one, FFXI on the other. I should dust off my Vita though and finish Soul Sacrifice Delta at some point. Why the frick did Sony never ported/sequel'd that to PS3 or PS4 is beyond me.
Live in the middle of nowhere, so I beat StreetPass Quest only using coins
Does the homepass hack stuff still work to spoof this shit?
no, it stopped working when nintendo shut down the backend for it
surprised there isn't a wholly homebrew replacement
well frick I was gonna look into that shit since I still had unfinished streetpass games, im sure someone will get something working
i wish i could fill up the entire 3DS menu with games.
The power of continued software library support from the main company itself.
The 3DS is a good handheld at it's core, unlike the Wii U
MH on the Vita would have outsold the rest of the Vita library. Your point?
why is there no personality in the switch?
>shitty bland ui
>no eshop music
>no miiverse type application
>no sense of community
>no animated logos
AAAAAAAAAAAA I HATE MINIMALISM
Welcome to Globohomo.
they abandoned miis a while ago
they could just port the miitopia one over since that was decent but no games besides smash even uses them anymore
>>no miiverse type application
I doubt they're ever touching that concept again. Honestly it's a miracle that they made it in the first place.
bland ui
I prefer the minimalist UI, since it means less resources wasted that the game/software can use, and also that it boots faster.
Lack of Shop music sucks though.
pretty sure it was to help make it less hackable but with how bare the console ui is i think thats cope.
>bought 3ds day one in 2011
>streetpass was rare during the first year but eventually picked up steam
>2013-2015 I got 20-30 a day walking around my college campus
>Always bring my 3ds on business trips
>Ever since the switch launched I get less and less streetpasses
>Most recent trip in may 2022 I didn't get a single one
>Finally get a switch lite 2 months ago
>It's a soulless tablet compared to the 3ds
wtf happened bros? why can't consoles have fun extras anymore?
I miss streetpassing my coworkers.
The real good shit was when you were messaging your online friend on the wii and the disk slot lit up blue.
I rarely got any StreetPasses, and one of the only ones I got gave me a house with this in it in Animal Crossing.
damn, thought I had it bad
what the frick
ggs that was me
Bet his character name was Dexter
I liked that shitty RPG for the streetpass
>streetpass someone whose mii is Hitler with cat ears
>named Kitler
I like the Switch, but it's sad that they removed this, and cameras, and microphones from it.
All these years I never knew what that green light meant, granted my 3DS was purely just for playing Pokemon but still
OK so i just found my modded new 3ds and i'm scared to update it since it might brick it.
There's a few guides on how to update your homebrew no matter what hack or update you have
Take a trip to /hbg/
my luma3ds is on 8.1.1
i haven't touched it in a while but sure. i'll go there
>backup savefiles with Checkpoint
>format sdcard and unpack CFW starter Kit.7z
>turn on 3DS and reinstall CIAs and savefiles
>Done
I disabled it because i don’t want people to find out I’m a gaymen loser
>tfw never really got to use Streetpass stuff because I lived in a ghetto-ish neighborhood and nobody around had 3DS
>work at best buy
>Being my 3ds to work everyday
>Get the street pass limit everyday
>Every street pass game utterly destroyed
These images should be bigger
i never turned this function on, and don't regret it.
weird how ds/3ds software use the full extend of the touch screen. Meanwhile newest mobile "games" (with the latest snapdragon, full touch screens and 4G connectivity ) are always casino-style scams
>mfw modded my mii to have golden pants so everyone can cheese through the streetpass minigames
>the amount of people you would get in streetpass from playing mario kart 3ds online.
I miss it
