Zeno Clash is one of the cooler and more interesting IPs in the last 10+ years, and it's a shame (and rather unsurprising) it's so under the radar.
It's like a postapocalyptic fantasy movie in an old 80's Eurocomic setting; Métal Hurlant etc.
2 is so much better than 1 it's not even funny.
Half of the levels in 1 overstay their welcome like the one where you just shoot rathbirds with the crossbow over and over or where you shoot the Tiamte on the boat, and some of the other stuff like the Shadow realm and its torch aren't particularly fun, either.
2 is still very fun but because it's a semi-open world you spend more time running around not fighting anything compared to 1, but if you like the art direction you'll love 2 because you get to see all of Zenozoik
I used to hate 2, but I revisited it recently and it's a pretty solid game. It doesn't do everything right, the entire idea of the "open world" needed to go through a couple more drafts I think. They somehow made combat less impactful and satisfying, but it's still pretty fun.
Art direction was great, you get to see much more of the world in the second game, and it's all great and has lots of variety.
Clash is a bit disappointing because the weirdness was tuned down, clearly trying to "broaden the appeal", just look at the voice acting and writing in the first trailer vs the final release.
Posting progress on my zeno clash clone, do these hits feel impactful? They feel a bit floaty to me but that might be because I haven't added any sounds yet.
They're a little floaty, should be a bit faster. The sixth attack looked good and impactful.
You should play Breakdown for reference as well if you haven't, it's pretty clearly the game that inspired Zeno Clash.
Ok I'll try that out, very easy to do in unreal by using custom time dilation. I'm going to try adding a slight build up to the normal punches and maybe some forward movement aswell
It's your project and you do you, dev-Anon. But your webm gave the impression of a somewhat leisurely tempo in the action of things?
I'd say this is a good suggestion
I think they look too realistic. I'd exaggerate the enemy reaction. Maybe add some effects like drool or teeth flying out later, too.
. Zeno Clash is comic book-y; you want exaggerated and fantastic visuals with that.
May I offer some humble recommendations for inspiration...?

Best of luck and I'll hope we'll see more of your project on Ganker some day, it looks neat!
I increased the impulse multiplier from the hits and it feels a lot better, I might post my progress again in a couple of day once I've added the other stuff. I'll check out those comics the artstyle looks really cool
That's nice to hear! You might want to look into Vermintide 2, since that game has the best fps melee I've ever seen? Especially its use of dodge (and the occasional block, for big telegraphed attacks) feels very satisfying in trying to survive combat against multiple opponents. Your project is interesting and original in that it'll be a brawler though, not a sword fps; it sounds like a first person version of the old Arkham games, and a weird aesthetic on top of feels like it could very much be kino.
There are a handful of games that do "weird fantasy" in a somewhat similar vein? Nothing really as far out there as ZC though, and Clash was impressive in that it still managed to have a coherent vibe to its presentation: Everything fit well together.
You can look into >what
Nothing as schizophrenic, as far as I know. That said, you might like EYE: Divine Cybermancy, Pathologic or The Void.

Clash: Artifacts of Chaos was released this spring.
yeah and we won't get another one for years, one of the directors said their next game is a new ip
New one released anon.
Oh, well i guess you figured it out. Did you play the Eternal Cylinder? it's pretty good as well.
We got one this year homie

Zeno Clash 2 sucks anyway meaning that the devs do not even know what made the first game good.
2 has such a better artstyle but yeah, its fricking awful

I only played a little bit of Zeno Clash 1, should I revisit the series? I liked the wacky art direction. Are 2 and the new game actually any good?

ZC2 is one of the best games ever made.

Still mad that we never got Zenocoic game.

seems a bit low energy. look at glass joe in punch out wii, now theres a guy getting knocked around

Oh yeah that game looks cool, I could add more of a build up to the punches maybe
Add more camera movement when hitting
Gameplay-wise this looks great! Maybe speed up the movement/animations just a liiittle bit to get it more hectic?

Pause for a millisecond on key frame hits
Focus more on key frames
Exaggerate enemy reaction to being hit
Watch Sakurai's videos on animation, a great place to start.
Huh I remember playing this, I'll buy this game next time there is sale.
love these games. it's the setting thats so interesting to me. is there anything else remotely like this out there?

Hylics 1 and 2

I like that final boss is literally a troony
