I guess Bioware wanted to give Shepard a foe that would be considered an equal in skill. Too bad they made the most try hard character possible. Seriously did they just look at Raiden from MGS and thought he's cool lets make our spin on it. Sure Mass Effect is sci-fi but his presence felt so anachronistic. It also didn't help with everyone claiming that he's one you shouldn't mess around with. But once you fight him, he is nothing but a pushover. Once you get into a cutscene however, Shepard and team lose all competence and Leng gets the upper hand.
I kind of want to see what a competent clone-Shepard from the Citadel DLC would be like if he replaced Kai Leng

That would've been interesting, too bad clone Shepard was nothing more than a joke from the beginning. But if it were to have been instead of Kai Leng at least I can believe the potential danger of their presence. Although with clone Shepard on the table that would bring more issues narratively speaking. Like why does the Illusive Man care so much about keeping you in Cerberus if he has a clone. Then again said issue was already a thing.
Instead of trying to make him skilled and giving him cutscene plot armor, they should've leaned further into the plot armor and gave him more Reaper tech. So the only reason he "wins" each encounter is because of the tech, not bad writing.
Then in the final fight against him, write in away to remove his OP gadgets nd he's forced to fight with his own (lacking) skills.
Which book? I thought he was tolerable in Retribution (the one he was introduced in), but all I know about Deception is that it's the one with tons of continuity errors and moments such as Kai Leng eating Anderson's cereal, pissing in his vase and murdering an autistic girl with a sharpened toothbrush.
>I thought he was tolerable in Retribution (the one he was introduced in)
I'm gonna have to disagree with that assessment. I don't think he was tolerable. I don't know what they flippity frick they thought they were going to do with him, but that was not a solid character idea.

I admit that I've only read it once, so maybe he was worse than I remember him being.

I think this

is the best possible answer to explain his existence and purpose.

I'm gonna have to disagree with that assessment. I don't think he was tolerable. I don't know what they flippity frick they thought they were going to do with him, but that was not a solid character idea.
Explain what's wrong with his character.

>He eats ceral and pisses in potted plants. What ... what was the fricking point of him?
In addition to that, he is a space ninja, in a world where portable mini nukes exist. What is he going to do? Cut a nuclear wahead in half, with his 8 quadrillion times folded nihhon steel katana? And what? You think he's gonna survive that? He's not a foil. He's a nobody. A worthless nobody, elevated to Gary Stu status, because the writers thought he was cool. He has no character, no real dialogue, no interaction worthwhile, in an entire game, several books anc comic books. Nothing that makes him look remotely competent, other than the writers say he is, and just unbelievably stupid reactions by everyone that comes across him, and the most assinine excuses behind those reactions. He makes everyone that interacts with him lesser, in order to make him seem competent. Which doesn't work, when the things he does are absurdly in how he even considered they could be successful, to begin with. He ruins stuff, everywhere.

MGR exists in the ME universe, so Kai Leng probably thinks hes Raiden in Space.
It was still pretty dumb. Thane a trained assassin goes up against another assassin. That is armed with a sword at close range. Miraculously he gets close enough to blast Kai with his pistol in the face but he wastes the opportunity. Thus getting in a hand to hand scuffle. Meanwhile Shepard and team stand around incompetently. Then Thane uses his biotic to build distance only to run up to Leng, who is still armed with his blade mind you, instead of shooting him with his gun.
I heard Kai Leng was really good, in this one book, that nobody read.
And upon reading it, he's worse.
Why would anyone do this?
Good. You read this post.
Leng should have either been a character like Jacob, or alternatively have been on the team in ME2.
Leng seems like some fricking weeb that comes out of nowhere, but with a game of development the concept could have worked.
he had already contracted his fatal disease by that point moron, he could live on the driest planet in the galaxy and would still have his terminal disease
The Drell have lived on Planet Lung Cancer for 200 years and Thane is 40 years old. Anon is right, there is no fricking way him or any other of his species should still be getting sick from a disease exclusive to long term high-humidity environments unless they are all collectively moronic
>Jacob cheats on you if you romance him in ME2 >Thane dies >Garrus is the only one you get more moments with in ME3
FemShep honestly got screwed over with 2/3 their romance options in ME2 in the long run.
I remember thinking that 2 took a huge shit on ME1's characters, but i came to love the new ones way more by the end. And then 3 actually took a huge shit on 80% of them
at least femshep gets some variety, your love interests as male shepard are:
human (kaiden in me3)
human (ashley)
liara (blue human that looks human on purpose to attract mates)
tali (space gypsy humanoid, looks like a human under the suit)
miranda (human)
kelly (human)
jack (human)
samara (same as liara)
STEEEEEEEEEEEEVE (human)
meanwhile femshep gets
kaiden (human)
ashley (human)
liara (blue human)
garrus (space bugman)
thane (aids lizard)
jacob (sheeeiiit)
the receptionist lady on your ship who replaces kelly (human)
slab bulkhead (human)
javik (pre-historic space bugman)
there are not nearly enough alien romances for male shepard. how am i supposed to live out my fantasy of being captain kirk or riker and fricking everything that moves if theyre essentially just reskinned humans???????
I just love that Jacob is the embodiment of nearly every black stereotype but in space. Wish he'd do a little jig with a mouthful of watermelon. Stop by the citadel for some space ™ menthols.
There were so many in Mass Effect 3. It was so ridiculous, I get why these happened thematically. But there were so many ways to avoid these casualties.
By Jack's own admission, she knows she's trouble. And she will go out of her way to not date someone, because of that. Does that self-awareness perhaps make her the best girl? I don't know. I don't think Jack would appreciate being put on a pedestal, though. She does seem to like the dedication and commitment, though.
Considering how Dread Wolf has cannibalized the ME team to work on it, that means that development has stopped. Effectively, after Dread Wolf's release sometime in 2025 most likely, ME will need to get rebooted. Meaning that all development costs for it so far, have been for nought. And EA will have to foot the bill for the required reboot. Unless Dread Wolf becomes Bioware's biggest hit yet, who in their right mind would trust Bioware to make another game, after that?
Unless Deadname is a massive success I do honestly believe that BioWare is done after release.
I mean, if EA keeps them around after a decade long development only for it to be the third frick up in a row, they're the nicest parent company around.
EA likes Mass Effect so I'd say the IP would go to Respawn.
I don't think Respawn has the manpower to develop Apex, more Star Wars a potential new Titanfall, which is what people actually want from them, and take on Mass Effect, which is practically a futureless franchise at this point, as well. Respawn have no reason to pick it up. If Motive is still a thing, they are more likely to be saddled with it. Either way, it's not going to be Mass Effect, anymore.
>If Motive is still a thing, they are more likely to be saddled with it
Who in the right mind would want that. I rather the Mass Effect IP just die than handed over to the remnants of Bioware Montreal
Although death was an inevitability for Thane. It's still a shame Bioware took him out the way they did.
I'm sure they thought it was pretty cool, too.
Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if they pat themselves on the back for that. Kai Leng, what an atrocious foil to Shepard.
I heard Kai Leng was really good, in this one book, that nobody read.

>MGR exists in the ME universe
(X) Doubt
I keep forgetting his name and remembering him as Kyle Wren.
>hype up kai leng
>jobs to a lizard with aids that is literally on death's door
much better sendoff compared to captain kirrahe who was just standing there cloaked and gets shanked and dies unceremoniously
It was still pretty dumb. Thane a trained assassin goes up against another assassin. That is armed with a sword at close range. If I stab you through the chest would you die?
It would be extremely dry
You are a big fish
Ribbit.
A lot of loyalty for a hired gun.
Or perhaps he's wondering why someone wouldn't shoot a man, instead of fighting with his bare hands?
>I am dying because the world we live on is too wet
>then live somewhere else
>no
Thane was pretty stupidly written
he had already contracted his fatal disease by that point moron, he could live on the driest planet in the galaxy and would still have his terminal disease

Because his entire race are indentured servants to the homies that live there. Did you even play the fricking games?
KWAB
Utterly cucked in 3
Such an utter shame.
>Jacob cheats on you if you romance him in ME2
>Thane dies
>Garrus is the only one you get more moments with in ME3
FemShep honestly got screwed over with 2/3 their romance options in ME2 in the long run.
At least Garrus makes up for it. If Garrus were an option romantically for male Shepard he would be his go to. There's no Shepard without Vakarian.
>Garrus were an option romantically for male Shepard he would be his go to
Tali for MaleShep, Garrus for FemShep
>Tali for MaleShep, Bullet for FemShep
Fixed
Dutch if I could kindly agree to disagree?
>Tali for MaleShep, varren for FemShep
There, actually fixed it.
No, no. It was quite fine the second time.
I remember thinking that 2 took a huge shit on ME1's characters, but i came to love the new ones way more by the end. And then 3 actually took a huge shit on 80% of them

There are absolutely none for a gay male Shepard. Welcome to the club, hope you’re enjoying yourself.
I just love that Jacob is the embodiment of nearly every black stereotype but in space. Wish he'd do a little jig with a mouthful of watermelon. Stop by the citadel for some space ™ menthols.
>dead
okay
>killed by "so edgy-cool he pees in a stranger's flower pot"
oof
I let him die alone, I didn't even visit him
Why?
Because I did not care about him just like most the squad mates in ME2
Who did you care about then?
Garrus and my wife Tali. Everyone else was expendable.
Okay fair but for me no one was expendable. Not even the people I didn't favor too much. At least they were an asset to the effort.
>Literally has 3 seconds to shoot the chink in the head
>waits to make it an epic shot with a pose
He deserved to die
What could have been...
Horrible looking creature and a boring character, glad she died and they didnt push her out of the dlc like that annoying prothean
What a fricking stupid death.
There were so many in Mass Effect 3. It was so ridiculous, I get why these happened thematically. But there were so many ways to avoid these casualties.
She's a lesbo.

Absolutely.
Not.

my final message. goodbye https://voca.ro/1hfMPeuK78Lv

Why'd they make Jack's lips like that

How come a hired gun is one of the realest homies out there!?
He just knows what’s up.
Grunt reads Hemingway
