Ferentus!
Rift
Rift wasn't shitty though, it was just very badly managed, and right in the first expac they started filling it with pay2win microtransactions and it died off
Rift had great dungeons, had a lot of fun with that game. Stopped playing when the aquatic expansion dropped though
mesos pls
nostale because pets are cool
kinda fricked that i miss this aesthetic nowadays
Getting my wildkeeper and then haging out with my guild farming LoD were the comfiest of days
Granado Espada
My brother in arms. I noticed there was a mobile version listed on QooApp. Fitting really. This game probably pioneered those collect-a-character gacha.
It really was a unique game in its day, although I've heard it's been completely bastardized now due to boosts and shit that overwhelm new players instead of easing them into the game in order to rush them to level cap.
I remember when they started adding daily missions where you needed to do these shitty dailies to fill up this gauge which would take 2-4 years of logging in every day to completely fill. God that was fricking awful. The game was already boggled down with almost endless quests and back tracking where you could spend a week of doing those quests and you wouldn't even have scratched the surface.
But the most soulless thing they did to that game though was then they moved all field raids and dungeons into a shitty little instance outside one town. That game had some big ass dungeons too. So now you had these big long dungeons with no boss at the end.
never heard it his but it looks interesting. like some kind of 1600s final fantasy thing.
It really was. You play as 3 characters at the same time which isn't as hard as it sounds. The ost was god tier too with over 200 tracks, if anything do check it out. This game's music genre ranges from 17th century like music to metal to trance, just all over the place. The towns were also pretty well done and probably my most favorite towns in any MMO.
Been forever but I think it it started with the Brista update when they added these dailies. I think there was a special shop that added stuff to the shop or decreased the price or something. They dailies were painfully boring tasks like delivering shit to npc's or boring mini games that got old fast.
>"(...)This gauge which would take 2-4 years of logging in every day to completely fill."
How horrifying. what does filling it up do? I have to assume you only had to do it once ever, right?
I really liked how they pushed the Family aspect when your made your initial party, and how you could recruit new characters into it as you played.
>Fiesta
I really hate when anime does this gay shit. That's not how people's faces react when flooded with different emotions. It's ugly and it's awkward to sit and watch.
thats all anime all the time, thats the one part that bothers you?
Its slowing down it for you to spot the details, if it were x5 it would look normal. The character is also shown struggling trying to keep it all down is the gist of it why it looks like as it does not really "flooded with different emotions." thingie.
t. autist
Autism
Cute
Its animated by asiatics, what do you expect?
I got humped in mabinogi and still think about it
hypixel skyblock
ah dungeon fighter. i miss you yet i dont want to play you
why not? dungeon fighter has only gotten better with age, like a fine wine
its fine wine tied in a weapon enforcement system. also the small stuff like goblin pad and controller support kinda put me off
dude, when was the last time you played? they hand out max reinforced weapons like crazy. the current event gives you fricking two of them. ive never used the goblin pin thing either.
honestly back during the female priest event. I quit because i forgot my password
really? then imma hop back in. is steam client ok or official?
Steam client is probably fine at this point but you should use the standalone launcher just to be safe.
Only reason I don't play DFO more myself is because I get burnt out by the grind from playing too many characters, but I feel I have to show off all of those Third Awakening and limited time avatars I have so I need to play more of them instead of just one or two.
ok ill try stand alone thanks
i think steam client can still get you tradelocked or captcha spammed, just do the official client
both of the "Create Event Character" events come with a +12/+8 max level weapon once you reach lvl 110, and you can even apply the event to an existing character.
Don't think anyone's said it but they added controller support which is mostly good, but has minor annoyances like the toggle for mouse movement activating at the end of certain activities, or the A/S/Space equivalent buttons not always doing what A/S/Space do, like repairing gear.
Gearing in general is also much more reliable, with fixed sets being your easily acquirable entry point, and consistent ways to grow your overall power via consistent epic drops, and the RNG loot grind coming from custom option epics.
They are consistently nerfing the shit out of gold farming though, which sucks for people getting in because of the moving goalposts of the goldfarm dungeons meaning that only raid goblins get to farm gold, while new people can't catch up due to not being able to farm gold. It's a weird system that I've never quite grasped what the objective was beyond stopping bots, which it sucks at. You can get Creature/Avatar/Aura with real money, but getting the gold to be full f2p is rough.
game started going to shit when they added anton raid
unlike otherverse, raids take longer so you need teams and power to make sure you go past the gimmicks quickly and flawlessly
it's more about the reward structure of the game changing with the introduction of anton onward than how demanding the content is.
how so?
>bans you randomly and puts your fate on if you can sweet talk the pajeets and bots
shit game
redpill me on Dungeon Fighter
>Do you enjoy arcade beat-em-ups?
>Would you like your loot runners to have a perspective other than top-down or first person?
>Do you feel like you'd enjoy learning the ins and out fighting game characters without all that pesky "Ranked Mode" skill floor nonsense?
If you answered yes to at least two of those questions, than Dungeon Fighter Online is certainly worth a shot.
isometric guilty gear but korean dungeons and dragons
It's a 2D beat 'em up like Castle Crashers or Battle Toads or Streets of Rage where you choose one of 15 or so base classes and go through dungeons. Once you reach a high enough level, you can choose to evolve into one of 4/5 other classes. Pic related was the list of classes like 3 or 4 years ago at this point. Each class plays differently.
Oh yeah and there's a pretty huge PvP scene and it's one of the top 5 highest earning video games in human history.
>top 5
Top 3 now. It's a genuine pillar of the South Korean economy.
wtf. something is fishy to be this high yet no one knows about the game. even limbus company is known more
It's incredibly popular in Asia. East Asia makes up about 20% of the global population which is more than all of the white people on Earth combined.
is the pvp scene good? it use to be before the you can bring any high level weapon and pub stomp
Nobody plays PVP on Global because it's Peer to Peer and connections have been shit for years.
Nexon mismanaged the original NA release to death and Nipple wasn't very good at advertising the relaunch + the Steam version of the launcher was (and still is for some people) riddled with issues so it didn't get off the ground (besides in China where people are fleeing their extreme P2W hellscape version of the game).
still? jeeze
oh right china. tried that version. quit because i couldn't understand the text even if there were eng guilds
>Chinese player wants to only worry about clone avatars, pets and titles in DFOG
>"EWW WHY U POOR??"
Also it doesn't help that outside of this one MMO, other avenues to be exposed to DFO include:
>The shitty Xbox Arcade version of the game that's dead
>PARTYYYYYYYY CALLLLLLLLLL
>The Chinese anime
>If you like K-Pop maybe some popstar you know did the vocals for one of those godforsaken character themes
>Honestly the number of people who know about DFO in this thread might triple if they knew Rose from Elsword was literally just F Ranger
>The mobile game (Korea only)
>DnF Duel
>Project BBQ (This doesn't exist anymore btw)
>The fricking Kazan Soulslike game they're making
the number of people who know about DFO in this thread might triple if they knew Rose from Elsword was literally just F Ranger
I'm surprised FGunner never got packages based on Rose's final classes or that Spitfire in Elsword doesn't fly around the map.
if you want pvp, go play DnF duel
No one plays that either.
just like dfo pvp!
i do play dnfduel
>tfw getting tons of chinese parties during Anton/Luke years ago
Is Bakal also full of them?
>so many cool ideas for unique beat em up playstyles forever trapped on a grindan korean mmo
oddly no one tried to copy them. its strange seeing some fangames in the past lost to time
>oddly no one tried to copy them.
Pretty sure there's been lots but they were so shitty no one, including myself remembered. I mean I feel like I've seen plenty but I can't remember their names. Maybe in ads on old MMO sites. I know there were some 3D ones like Rusty Hearts.
>Rusty Hearts
That takes me back.
Can you guys name some? I remember seeing Dungeon Fighter back in the day but never got around to playing it.
hows DNF global doing?
haven't played in a long while since I don't have the time
i havent download the game yet because its slow even if i have a 50 mb download speed. from what i seen its mostly the same.
you steamroll story content, play the endgame dungeons for gear, and do dallies or pvp if you want to. gameplay is about the same but flashier
hows the playerbase doing?
it shrunk a ton or are they still doing pretty good
i never actually checked but going by the number of players and raids i guess it still alright. probably
rappelz
I'd play the shit out of a Rappelz 2
>rappelz 2
didn't they turn that into mobile trash
The OST in this game is fricking amazing
why the frick was this so popular in middle/eastern europe
i swear everyone played it
For eastern Europe at least I think it was because it was the only accessible MMO at the time that was translated in their language.
Silkroad, Dragon Nest, Vindictus...
free, runs on a potato, translated into these languages, monetization methods, the key to seeing lots of kurwas in the chat
>claim Maplestory is one of my favorite mmos of all time
>realize all I ever did with it is go invisible as a rogue and walkaround to view lands and enemies that were leagues above me and would one shot me if I ever uncloaked
thats comfy man, every game being minmaxed to shit anymore is awful it would be nice if thats all it took to get enjoyment in games anymore
hell yeah
MS was my first MMO, back in 2004. my most significant memories lie within
>sound: Perion theme
>visual/content: jump quests
good call. You saved yourself thousands of dollars, and probably tens of thousands of dollars in time.
I remember what a thrill it was to spend your mesos to take one of the ships to somewhere way out of your league and have to scrounge up the money to just go back.
Especially if one of these guys shows up to murder you cause you didn't want to sit in the cargo hold.
Early Maplestory was cozy AF. No other game made the early-mid levels feel like they mattered instead of shoving all the content to endgame.
Playing games with childlike wonder is based though? I remember going down the lego tower and that one underwater zone being confused at wtf was going on and seeing all this insane shit to kid me
>being a noob trying to explore all the high level maps in maple story
>and of course you wouldn't know those were high level places in the begining
>ducking and dodging all those super strong enemies that could kill you in 1 hit
>the deeper you go the less people you see so no help from anyone
>just keep going deeper and deeper while being unsure where the frick you are
>all you see are cute monsters that are deadlier than a raid boss to you
Man that game. I don't know how they did it but even as an adult they knew how to make a game full of childlike wonder and suspense.
Defiance had nice gun variety, I think, it's been a while and I only played the early game with a friend. Combat took a little active input too which was nice
i liked Defiance, it just kind of went off the rails in the mid-game and turned into "hold W to get to the next super mega giga boss and contribute basically nothing while 500 people mashed F1 at it until it died.
I still remember seeing all the "YOUR CHOICES IN GAME WILL AFFECT THE SHOW" shit they were doing with this game was so bizarre.
I know it barely counts
This game was peak until everyone found out how to glitch it and started only really playing TDM
WHO'S THAT MAN?
WHO'S THAT MAN?
>that feeling of mystique and wonder when playing this as a moronic teen
SHOW ME YOUR S4
I loved playing chaser and touchdown
?t=119
Spamming emotes on the win screen was so damn satisfying
>TD/Chaser
>Melee only
it's time for some real gaming.
Perfect World International
Anarchy online except its not shitty.
I came here to post Anarchy Online. Good to see some people remember it.
take any mmo from this era and i'd probably enjoy it more than any modern one
Lineage 2
I do like how instead of factions it had alliances of guilds though, and you could declare war to another alliance, fight over farming spots (there weren't many instances if any IIRC), etc.
L2 was fully open world until CT1.5 when they added Hellbound Island and after that just about everything turned into instances. Also fricking love L2 even run my own server for a couple of old L2 friends
Lineage II, Aion, EVE Online. Can't bring it back anymore, it's just not possible. But at least I have the memories.
they were running bent forward
This character design wouldn't fly in modern gaming culture.
its a korean game, they have the exact same types of design (even bigger breasts nowadays)
>a week ago decided to play l2 on private server low rates
>can't remember shit and lost track of chronicles so I google for help
>some russian dude took the time to make a guide in english of all the russian info about systems in interlude
>truly amazed on how the devs pulled this shit
>back to my server, want to start doing what russian bro suggests
>moronic exp to adena/drop ratio
>gatekeepers free, custom shops that have just some of the items effectively breaking the gear progression
>cash shop
>every class has spoil/sweep and dwarf craft
>like 10 player shops in giran and that's it
>just a bunch of doomer friends in a clan fighting another group of doomers of another clan
wew, you truly can't bring it back
>playing l2 private server
>not getting all 2h buffs and dances
ngmi
they do have them, I forgot to mention it
Once I tried it I can never go back farming without vampiric rage and wind walk always on.
And dual clienting is a hassle.
>>like 10 player shops in giran and that's it
Propably not related as that's casued by cash shop, but frick auction house they added later on.
I remember setting up buy shops in Dion for some materials, reprocessing them on dwarf and selling with profit in Giran/Aden.
I wish there was a true C1-2-3 (not L2Classic) server to play, although I realize that may be my nostalgia talking
mabinogi, still think it has some of the best combat in mmos
?list=PLr2tRkw8OQoe89LoJuwqjrwhcFRLz-mXJ
Fallen Earth, that game was peak for me. Spending a week gathering the mats to make the dune buggy mount felt so rewarding. I know there is some group that is hosting the servers officially now but it's not the same.
I just really really like Mabinogi. For some reason, the memory of going to Emain Macha for the first time sticks outs, I didn't know where the shops were, so I literally just asked an npc about it with the keywords and they directed me to it. It sounds incredibly fricking mundane but I just really liked the keyword system and all the flavor text you would get from it.
MabiPro is the closest to what I want from Mabinogi since live has basically none of the soul atm, but not having an english translation is just such a huge deal breaker because of this unfortunately, and any other private servers are either bloated with dumb bullshit or missing features, like the one I tried before was completely missing Glas' healing mechanic so I just killed it normally without having to engage with the scroll burning mechanic.
Same here. Mabipro is a snapshot of mabi before all of the soul was sucked out of it by nexon greed. Maybe they'll change the remake around enough for it to be worth playing again.
>only the realest Gs know
Veronica
Realm of the Mad God. Seems like every few years I step back and try a few more characters, then give up when I remember how unfun the grind is.
Based
Based
Based
Based
More so a BR, but I absolutely loved the game as long as no one competent played against me. Got all the achievements on Steam as well.
>posts a fricking third person chinesium BATTLE ROYALE title in a MMO THREAD
are you a moron or just a fricking sperg?
allstar jp cast
too bad the game was p2w
its still ALIVE rn btw
and yes it still has an all starjp cast
i'm not paying for the other half of my hotkey slots and inventory space for new character bruv
all of that was fixed YEARS ago
no more paying for 2nd slot bar
no more paying foor inventory space
shitton of QOLs and a private server exists still
heck the game even has 64 classes right now
Rising Force Online because of the full-scale wars between 3 playable factions, Space Elves, Cyborg Supersoldiers, and humans that could pilot mechas.
I still think this shit is the coolest thing ever and have never seen something similar in any other game.
Played the shit out of that one because I hated the artstyle in Lineage (which was way more popular), dabbing on generic anime elves with my big robot wiener was very enjoyable
>Cyborg Supersoldiers
Weren't they actually worms in man-sized mechs?
Age of Wushu
Anyone here remember playing that shit with Ganker back in 2011-2012?
>Come back after about a few months away.
>My account got hacked, and everything of even marginal value removed from it.
I gave up at that point.
I am now remembering the Vietcong block from Age of Wushu.
Wizard101
It's actually still up and has a surprisingly large userbase atm, so much so that if it ever gets killed I'm confident that a server emulator will get created as soon as possible
how is this mmo one of the long lasting ones? i remember them advertising on cartoon network like 15 years ago
kids will never let go of things they grew up with, which is why we all have boners for maplestory and RO
because it's not generic fantasy tab target slop
literally that simple
yeah the combat just too unique and the mythological + wizard aethestic is cool hasn't ever been done before by anyone, i keep telling myself each year i'll go back and check it out since i still remember my login details but i've never gotten to it
that they're able to still push out new worlds is impressive they must still have a lot of subscribers
that cartoon network ad was how I got into the game originally, money well spent on their part I guess cause they got a lot of money out of me. I was a dumb kid and those goddamn premium castles were so cool, especially the private PvP arenas
kino
do you still have the castle?
Naw, I don't have the password for that account anymore and I think the e-mail is defunct
I guess I could try it out, run through my old passwords and see if any of them work, but eh.
Korea and their gaming culture is based around cheap PC games (PC bangs)
This is probably one of, if not the last kids mmorpg still running and active. How do they do it?
it's fun
In fact, I would actually say I like the card game more than Yugioh. Unlike Yugioh, it's also not pay-to-win.
That's probably one of the reasons it's managed to stick around so long, it advertises itself as free-to-play with in-game purchases, but that's a lie. It's a pay-to-play game with a free demo. And since it has a monthly subscription, and the game is good enough that a lot of people are sticking around to pay that subscription, there's not much reason to kill it.
Wizard101 is basically what I wish Pokemon Scarlet/Violet was, except single-player.
>it advertises itself as free-to-play with in-game purchases, but that's a lie
Aside from Runescape, is there ever such thing as a free MMO?
Club Penguin Rewritten I guess. Or have they managed to find a way to sneak in-game purchases there too? If so I'd be impressed, Disney lawyers are quite zealous.
Didn't that get shut down years ago by Disney's lawyers? There's still private servers, but that one's definitely gone.
yeah, they rebranded to "New Club Penguin"
https://newcp.net/
It got shut down because they were running ads even after they had enough ad money to cover the server fees
Meanwhile, Toontown Rewritten is still up after 10 years
That's probably because people were making tons of articles and videos titled "Club Penguin has PEDOPHILES on it?!?" even though the original site had been shut down for awhile by that point, and the private server with the pedophiles was entirely different from CPR.
>Make a plush of an OC boss in Corporate Clash
>Didn't get any C&D making money off of it, even if it was for charity
How are Toontown servers able to take risks, but not Club Penguin ones?
Now if only KI would get of their asses and AT LEAST make the first arc free.
>They're removing Beast Tamer from Maplestory
FRICK YOU NEXON
Haven&Hearth
Amazing game but the two guys working on it are too scared of success so they will never advertise their game or put it on Steam. It could be a huge success if they wanted to.
Atlantica Online, it started going downhill when they added "TBS", but if they kept it with the original gameplay I would likely still play this shit.
Sometimes it's literally impossible to not know
I always preferred Trickster over RO. And I loved how Ntreev was super generous with premium currency handouts in Trickster and I'd use it to buy stuff in Pangya. I burned myself out trying to play too many different characters at once though.
I played the hell out of this, quit for a while, then went back and played more. Eventually it became too much of a chore to play though and I gave my account away to my guild leader for his friend to use so I wouldn't try coming back again.
I tried playing it on Net-7 for a bit but it just wasn't the same. I did like how they implemented the last 3 classes that never made it into retail though
The music was probably the best part of RO, I saved the music folder the final time I uninstalled and still have it on my HDD to this day
Lineage 2. For a brief time it had my balls in a vice. Don't even know what was so enchanting about it.
Won't have anything even remotely comparable these days. Maybe it's for the better. Tho I still want to turn back time...
ROSE Online
Flyff, Allods, Wurm...
Sometimes you miss the slop.
>Wurm
Man, I remember playing it during the lockdown months, and a lot of the time, all I was thinking was "Man, this game must have been so much more fun when it has a bigger community..."
Did manage to do a few player held events, including personally initiating a dragon slaying while I was en-route to an other dragon slaying, and getting first pick of the spoils.
Say what you will about RO, but the music that played on the log in menu is amazing.
Ragnarok because my IRL actually played it so I could actually play it with my real friends.
vindictus
>it's getting a spinoff single player game
based
I still play mabinogi to this day, I have a serious problem..
Florensia, basically the gist of it is that when you reached around level 40, quests now gave you only half the xp needed to level up, so you had to spend countless hours grinding to level up a single level.
>ancient shitty mmorpgs
i remember 2Moons
i remember bots or bouts. glitchy af with the out of bounds glitches and room crashes but a fun beat em up
looks familiar any gameplay footage? I think i tried installing it but couldnt get it to work dont remember.
most of the old stuff is low quality but the private client ones look good
it just lacks the high population of 2009
probably the game i played the longest, i reached level 80-something without spending a dime back in the day which was a huge accomplishment because i dropped every other game i played very quickly
that shit was pure jank and i had no idea what i was even doing but it was fun
yeah i was like you until i played pvp and saw the cool cash shop items, ignoring the expired period.
If only acclaim wasnt a dumb company, maybe it could lingered past the 2010's
It was actually kino. The multiplayer was fun as well. It had loads of soul despite being about robots, and if it was made by a more competent dev today I think it could do numbers.
i pray for a spirtual successor with multiplayer and pvp
I played this. Triforce on Trieste after they did server nonsense. Same name but on Abbadon prior. I miss it. They removed the grind. Frick Kingpin, Ichiban and Seggernaut.
I need to go back
Lineage 2, Mabinogi and Ragnarok aren't shitty mmorpgs, the rest are.
>Mabinogi
>not shitty
> Ruined by updates.
That's the game's only issue.
Ragnarok was pretty shit. Fun for the time, but aged terribly.
>class balance doesn't exist, some classes are heinously broken while others are complete trash
>nothing to do except endlessly grind mobs
>PvP is utter shit due to the nonexistent class balance
>casters/mages were super easy to level, melee classes were a pain in the dick
>no real endgame content, just more mob grinding and fishing for 0.1% chance card/equip drops
i personally hate ragnarok but i still think this type of game can be more fun than most newer games, mmos are basically completely dead for a reason and it's that they're way too overwhelming and have too much shit to do
sometimes i just want to log in, grind for a while, take a break for a few days without missing anything and do it again, or just log in to hang out and shit, that doesn't exist anymore, games have system requirements through the roof and have turned into jobs, it's too much, a lot of people can't even run them and a lot of people won't consider leaving it running all the time to be used as a social thing
Growtopia
L2 was more popular than WOW in Russia in 00s.
I remember my brother always playing it.
Why did Koreans go so balls deep in MMOs, anyways?
They've churned out so many MMO the excuse that making an MMO is too expensive sounds like a lie.
Translates well to PC cafe culture that was huge in the 2000s, alongside FPSes, RTSes, and MOBAs. Since you can't have local storage for saves, you pretty much need to be an MMO to be an RPG in that environment.
they caught the graphicsprostitute bug from the west. Most of their new shit like first descendant is unoptimized pc benchmark software
no idea, but it's sad that they're really not doing it anymore, cheaply developed MMOs with mediocre graphics but cool aesthetics and unique gameplay are way more interesting than generic tab target game or generic medieval fantasy slop with korean plastic characters
MMOs were a hit to Asians in general since the early 2000's was when internet cafes blew up in popularity across the continent.
Consoles were/are super expensive to own from what I remember hearing so PC and phones ended up being more popular. They were pretty much Japan that grew up on PC instead outdated consoles. Sadly it was their shitty video game regulations that held them back.
I've played a few shitty MMOs over the years but the only ones I liked were Vindictus and The Secret World. If that Vindi spinoff game is worth even an ounce of a frick I'll basedface
Koreans love grinding and MMOs always have grinding
I wish this game didn't suck as hard as it did, because any MMO where you're not a regular biped deserves love.
Pour one out for the fallen western MMOs that their parent companies killed in like two years. Tabula Rasa, Matrix Online, Asheron's Call, SWG, City of Heroes...
Meanwhile you can still play official versions of ROSE Online and Priston Tale and Perfect World.
There was a working server years ago called Net-7. I wonder if it's still around.
Thankfully, City of Heroes isn't dead. Game is fricking thriving to this day. Latest update is neato and the dev team actually gives a shit.
I wouldn't call a lot of the ones in that image "shitty MMOs" tbf. Like Maplestory and Lineage 2 were both pretty high quality, L2 especially. Shitty MMOs to me are ones like Hero Online or something.
maplestorygays please...let the game die...
shut up, I'm going to COOOB!
shitty eastern mmo websites...why did you leave us so...
Those websites had so much soul
I almost feel like learning webdev just to make clones of them for fun
the SOVL was overwhelming. it's baffling we've improved CSS to be able to make these websites much easier but get kekked by mobile first slop
Mabinogi hurts the most because it has the potential to be a genuinely fantastic game, and the studio just does the absolute bare minimum to infinitely extend the grind with diablo 3 damage numbers and raids you have to run daily for literal years to even hope for a drop
mmos should double down on the socialization. i don't know why it's almost unanimously decided that this genre has to be about some soul sucking grind and playing a game like a second job
Sometimes I remember Faldon and wonder if it actually existed.
Graal Online. It actually fricking sucked but it was so much fun.
hell yeah brother
Priston Tale, Trickster Online, Dragon Nest
>could use html to pimp up your storepage
I miss it so much...to bad neopets deleted my account for inactivity
Same, back in the 2000s. Don't feel too bad though. It has taken a dangerous route.
grim
I put hundreds of hours into Dragon Nest and had some really good characters before nexon moved it to steam and deleted all the accounts, I was so mad I quit playing
for me it was all the lobby arena fighters,
>getamped2
>splash fighter
>rumble fighter
these were so fricking sweaty and got toxic as shit sometimes
Same
Getamped had tons of content for a free game. I wish it was more popular.
For how bad accessory powercreeping got, I'm surprised the capoeira accessory was the only one with real knockdown recovery.
>no everquest yet
SHAME
jokes on you. I still love EQ. Ive played for more than half my life and i dont expect to escape it until i die or it does.
I miss it
everyone does
God I loved this game, I remember religiously following all the attempts to revive it back in the day.
Actual kino
Will there ever be a new MMO that's good again? Is there actually any hope left for the genre?
I doubt it, they all fall into the same few failed categories
>Western tab target medieval fantasy WoW/everquest clone (literally worthless)
>Korean daily/weekly/alt grinding simulators
>Japanese kusoges that rip eachother off or rip off western MMOs, basically irrelevant since they rarely make any
None of those are good, yet no one dares to try something else, on top of that they all NEED to have top of the line graphics and 5000 features and big open worlds now, which makes development expensive and take many years, they need to do the opposite and make them smaller scale, spend less time and money on graphics and features no one cares about, make a game with good gameplay, make it online, it doesn't have to be anything crazy, go back to the lobby type game that was so popular before
sucks dokeV isn't an mmo anymore
i'm looking forward to this one. it not being an mmo might even be a good thing because i'm kinda fricking sick of this genre's unholy grinds
The obsession with super high fidelity graphics is definitely a big reason why every new MMO takes like 10 fricking years to release. It also ends up ironically making the games feel smaller because since there's so many high detailed character running around character render limits will be really fricking low so you'll never just see 200+ people huddled in an area anymore.
Yeah it's kinda hilarious that MMOs have gotten less massive because they have to instance the world and impose rendering limits, there was a point where we should have stopped trying to improve graphics in MMOs and instead focused on the things that actually make the genre unique
>make a game with good gameplay, make it online, it doesn't have to be anything crazy, go back to the lobby type game that was so popular before
just make monster hunter
a problem with the mmo genre is the audience is fricking moronic and conditioned to expect (and even desire) the slop you described, and they would flip the frick out if it doesn't do those things
>lmao why would i play this over wow
>what the frick why doesn't this game have enough chores for me to spend 12 hours a day on?
>this game doesn't have 5000 features and shitty minigame """content""", a new open world area with expansive questlines and updates its combat system and basically becomes a different game every 6 months, it's literally trash
just a regular multiplayer game would let a dev get away with not doing any of this crap because for the most part its audience isn't made of literal Black folk
>just make monster hunter
Yeah, pretty much, a lot of the greatest "MMOs" were essentially in the style of monster hunter with different gameplay
I like your ideas, I think 2d is more expensive than 3d at this point, good pixel artists are pretty rare and you don't want to make an MMO that looks like some indie pixelshit, you could probably replicate some of the good looking old 2d games with 3d, and make it look better though.
>they need to do the opposite and make them smaller scale
Yep
>area/room based, no open world
>no quests or quest system, the mob farming and grind is the game
>no end game
>no instances, instead figure out a way that people can't just park indefinitely at a location without resorting to a shitty item durability/repair system
>lifestyle/roleplaying based instead of combat based; classes not balanced. The warrior class is not going to be balanced with the blacksmith class or the merchant class.
Hell I'd go even farther and do an inverse transmog based system where your class is determined by what you are dressed as. Want to be a warrior/tank? Dress like one. Want to be a spellcaster? Dress like one. Maybe equipment has a point system to unlock archetypes/abilities like in Monster Hunter...
>bare minimum graphics, focus on artstyle over graphical fidelity. I'm not sure if 2d is cheaper than 3d though, and 2d limits character customization
oh also, integrate something like Path of Exiles leagues instead of expansions or story based updates.
Introduce new mechanics that are relevant from level 1 to max level that can be retired or reintroduced as desired without being too heavily integrated with the core gameplay systems
I am sure I fricking wear glasses because of lineage 2.
would do it again. Found also some girls thanks to it. a private server actually. good times. thanks schoolmate of which I even forgot the name, you suggested me well
I spent about 120 dollars on gpotato for flyff back when I was 12. I was moronic but also my wings were sick and I could respec on a whim
FlyForFame, the flyff p-server which made the game a little less p2w.
Give me another superhero MMO with really deep character customization options and powerset options, please God.
This one may be a little more obscure, I don't really hear people talk about it anymore.
MapleStory. Cousin got me into it, but my XP could barely run it. Couldn't even access channel 1 without extreme lag or outright crashing. So back in its heyday I always hung out in the boonies of channel 20.
you're in luck, they deleted whole servers to make logging in less laggy haha :c
Literally only I played this game
I'm probably the only one on this board who played this.
what is the gameplay of this? i think i played it but i might be thinking of something else
If you've ever played Monster Rancher Hop-A-Bout it's just like that game. It's a racing game where you ride on bouncy balls.
Way back i used to play a free korean mmo, but i don't remember the name. It was already dying when i played it. The only things i remember is that one class started with a scythe and could only use that type of weapon and had to kill monsters to get better ones as a drop. There were only maybe 3 or 4 classes. Also the player characters were small and some sort of fairy/human hybrid. I think the starting clothing/armor was blue (for the scythe class). Hope someone can help. Have been trying to remember it for at least 20+ years
Anyone else used to play this?
Hey, thats the same artist who illustrated for MMZero! (JFC 1min captcha wait time.
Maybe ill try HorizonXi again. Went on it 2y ago but if you solo its a pain in the ass to resummon your 3 "trusts" on every new map (and one more time if you recently leveled up). Breaks immersion a bit, you know? Even with all the QOL on the official servers (of FFXI), its really bad with how much you need to rely on a wikia to not waste time for 1/2/3h on stuff you cant know/learn the hard way. Love the system and aesthetics though.
This game had so much charm to it and the fate system was a good way for players to be more interactive and social
I still think of the mage who's elemental spells were based on the different seasons from time to time
Flyff
Cabal
Ragnarok but only private servers
I miss Trickster like you wouldn't believe.
Not its p2w bullshit though.
The year I decided to retry playing this old MMO, I found it got shut down prior. Worst feeling ever, especially since it only exists now as a Chinese mobile game.
i legitimately tried getting into this game like 4 separate times since it's 1 of the like 2 turnbased mmos and I genuinely had zero idea what to do or how to progress
There was no proper direction. You just sorta traveled and did the quests for the human partners to join you or power up. I don't think I remember a single actual main quest from the times I played.
Basically the original chinese publisher got bought by another publisher who was later sold to another chinese company, who took the dev team to work on their own clone of WLO so IGG was unable to renew the rights for the game and had to shut it down even when they were paying pennies for it, also the economy went full moron on the last year because IGG merged servers together without thinking some players had billions.
Angels Online had the same problem for a while but the dev team is Taiwanese and makes gachashit for IGG so they basically got the rights for free now as long they keep hiring them for their scam mobile games.
>tfw Lineage 2 had bare, fully textured dark elf pusser you could check by tilting the camera, until C4 when people found out and they had to wipe that shit out lightspeed because of rating
Good times
surely you have images/video of this anon
I do, they're on some disc somewhere, but you could check yourself if someone has a working C3 server
Club Penguin
For me it's dragon ball online
>spending the entire summer grinding for dragonballs every weekend(they only dropped on weekends) to unlock super saiyan
good times
There truly is nothing like it lol
I agree they probably could have made it an earlier unlock. The lore is very interesting I think it's one of the main reasons so many dragon ball games after it use it, I think one of my favorite parts is that the lore from online eventually lead to expansions to the demon realm and all that stuff
It's still total bullshit you had to wait until level 30 just to be able to fly.
Flying mechanics are so cool.
At least the lore was pretty cool. I really liked the Majin species.
Are the Flyff privates any good? I'd like to try again I think
>remember the wave of Korean free MMO that plagued the later 2000s/early 2010
>find out that fricking LaTale is still alive and somehow so is Fiesta
LaTale I can kind of understand but Fiesta? I figured it would've dropped dead a decade ago at least.
I can only imagine the server costs for these things must be absolute chump change, because they're tuned for mid-2000s late-dialup early-broadband.
world of warcraft
Earth Eternal and Shaiya, both dead now.
I never got far in DDO because I was a huge poorgay back when it went F2P but I still remember having fun with it being a glorified pest control in the harbor killing rats and kobolds. I did snag up all the free expansion shit they gave away recently so maybe I'll check it out again.
this is technically a hardcore thing but it's a general frame of reference for quests/zones if you decide to replay
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1vPW9_kGgLqRt-tdgstaf6b8SVC7Cr7Ii0P9Q6yrOgbs/edit#
Thanks I'll keep it bookmarked on the off chance I do.
boomp
For Me? It was OGplanet games, I still remember banging the frick out of Lost Saga and Rumble Fighter
That mid-00s middle of the road texture work with lots of post-processing and particle effects to carry the style because more consumer PCs at the times could handle it was peak MMO visual design for me. LOTRO, DDO, Silkroad Online, City of Heroes, GW1 and others I can't remember right now.
There's gotta be one other homie here who knows my feeling on this.
I'm here anon, Silkroad post-processing and particle effects were peak aesthetic. Everything had bloom, but not like the shitty AAA brown games bloom, it was different, it was special.
Hell yeah.
MMORPGs arent allowed to be good because the DoD considers the inability of intelligence operatives to be present in every guild on every server in every game to monitor player communications was an impossible task and instead just nationalized the gaming industry through ESG "venture capitalists" and intentionally destroyed it
now they dont have to worry about "based" gaming communities or "based" guilds in various games or "based" barrens chat radicalizing preteens
im not joking at all
Started scrolling through the thread to see if someone would post it. Quite rare to see anyone mention it here. It was somewhat popular here in hueland and also had a sizeable amount of egyptians playing it as well.
anyone remember space cowboy online/ace online?
never got far into it but I remember enjoying it for how different it was compared to everything
I remember. The only "ship/Air combat" scifi mmorpg ever
unfortunately yes because i still play that off and on
its absolute dogshit now, but back during ep2/ep3 years it was absolute peak, sad that there still isn't anything like it out today
nowadays i only pop in to see which of my guildmates is pissing off shitskins in chat, "shut up moron" is a pretty effective way to rile them up
come to think of it, its probably one of the few games i know of left that has a near completely unmoderated faction-wide chat
>come to think of it, its probably one of the few games i know of left that has a near completely unmoderated faction-wide chat
god bless them
flyff was my first mmo remember my highschool friend getting me into it and we started our own guild group damn good times
pirates of the caribbean online. don't even know if you can play this anymore
>pirates of the caribbean online
I didn't even know that was a thing
I think it's called The Legend of Pirates Online nowadays, still kicking apparently.
>The Legend of Pirates Online
oh wow thanks anon!
No problem, King.
I enjoyed Tabula Rasa. It had its problems, but I enjoyed getting strong enough to go to a zone that was taken over and push enemies out of all the strongholds so the quest givers would return. Ah well.
I loved Tabula rasa and how the mobs weren't entirely braindead morons
I feel like it could have been Helldivers before Helldivers if it had a little more support and polish also DIDN'T LAUNCH THE SAME DAY AS BURNING CRUSADE!
Mabinogi
Rose online
TERA
Brothers (or sisters, idk)
I liked Alods.

I still miss it bro....

Does Hellmoo count?
Okay be honest, how many rapes?
uncountable.
Dark Eden
I really liked age of wushu, selling offline players to brothels was a lot of fun. It had great combat for a tab target game too.
Rest in peace to the best mmo to ever exist.
Frick, anon...you hurt me good
>resubbed like 3 months before the end of Frontiers without even knowing it was coming, had just got my first high-school job and thought I'd pop back in after years away now that I had some disposable income
>world is completely fricking dead save for the one high level no lifer still clinging to his toon he probably spent so munch time on running thru queynos or the other major city
>log out, listen to the log in music and watch those animated screen saver birds fly by on screen for a bit before calling it quits forever
Has PCSX2 team figured out how to emulate it yet?
Flyff and MapleStory.
One of the (if not THE) most refreshing MMO concepts I've seen in a while. Frick Square Enix.
I don't remember ever seeing this
howd it play?
American servers lasted less than a year because I don't know, Square didn't seem to think it was profitable or something.
It was 50 vs 50 pvp battles in skillshot-based 3rd person combat to fight for territory in an ongoing war between kingdoms. Besides the 3rd person combat, people could also place structures (think defense towers and shit) and invoke creatures like giants and dragons to turn the tide of battle.
You could choose one of I think 5 kingdoms and select places to conquer on a map, then battle other kingdoms for it.
shit that sounds cool
Very. It's been like 14 years and I'm still butthurt about it. You could play in japanese servers for a while doing some VPN tinkering and shit but the ping was atrocious and the game was real time so a big nope.
Fun fact, it was made by George Kamitani who then fricked off because Square basically stole the game from him and founded Puraguru, which later became Vanillaware.
Oh hey, what was your name? I was Gevrandian (purple, bottom of the map) and named Razeluxe. At least one good thing was, when they accepted they were gonna shut down, they just released every update we hadn't gotten yet. Greatswords, cestus, etc. Definitely miss it. Hasn't really been anything quite like it.
Maple story is still alive moron
>the most subtle nexon bot
A lot of these are still alive. Doesn't change the fact they're shit MMOs designed for 2000's middle school weebs, in the hopes they would burn mom's credit card in the cash shop.
fair enough
No one has mentioned Jade Dynasty yet. I remember playing a class that was meant for cc locking targets but had a few niche skills to stack damage. instead I specced all the damage skills and made a 1-shot build, blowing people up for 10-20x their max hp.
my mmo experience has been lacking ever since.
for me it was:
>RO
>Maplestory
>Flyff
>Dragon Saga (Dragonica)
>Nostale
anyone wanna play (EU) ?
I'm not eu but I'll play...
thanks for responding
(Discord: lazysundeez)
NTA, but I want to play RO but have never played it before. Is it as good as nostalgia gay said?
yes it's good.
I wanna play it!
All right but which server? I'll add you on discord first
Not him, but, try this, maybe?
https://www.deviruchiclub.com/
Never played there but I assume since you seem to want to experience classic RO this might be the best since it's pre renewal.
desu, times have changed and the novelty of chatting ingame is gone now, I would only recommend playing it if you did back in the day
yeah this, it has a shit ton of version with little tweaks, so every guide you find online is completely worthless. Only players from back in the day know their shit and unless you find someone willing to guide you it's a waste of time I guess
>t. saw a taekwon solo odin3 for literal days and would invite you to leech exp while he farmed with a moronicly autistic secret build that only worked for that specific place
Mabi. Hate it now though. Nothing feels right.
Dunno if we get to call Secret World 'shitty' - the combat was definitely ass - but I think about it all the time, goddamn. If it'd been released as a single player urban fantasy RPG, I still think it'd be one of the best beloved games of the period.
you now remember the old vernacular used in early 00's
>homosexuality in iRo
uhh
Continent of the 9th seal
Guild Wars 2
The first two expansions were amazing but the developers are a bunch of morons who would rather do anything than work on their flagship game and have been funneling money into other projects for years now.
Their projects keep getting cancelled, too. What a shitshow.
Guild wars 2 was such a generic mmo. Zzzzzzz
High key beautiful how you could get stuck in the first town for fricking days.
Furthest I got in this game was getting a free Surtr, I remember loving it at the time but I looked up gameplay now and it looks pretty bad. Killer music though, I had never played an SMT game before at that point so the post-apocalyptic setting with mythological creatures blew my mind
tower of fantasy
i would've gotten addicted to playing ToF if it weren't for the gacha
fair but 80% of the games here are also heinously p2w asianslop
kys genshittroon
Genshin is also slop moron.
Genshin slop clones don't count, stop thinking you're a part of the MMO conversation.
a shot in the dark here, but do you think any anon has the client game files for any of these MMOs?
Fantasy Earth Zero
Ixion Saga
?
TERA
ArcheAge...
>ArcheAge
what happened there anyway? did western release totally botch it or was it deeper design issues?
Killed by its monetization practices. Game was a literal "pay out of your ass for mtx or you will never win". There was one particularly famous video series of an asian Archeage player raging at the game in barely comprehensible English where he showed pvp in an arena and what it was like to fight without wearing pay to win gear and getting wrecked no matter how well he performed and then instantly equipping his p2w gear and killing his opponent in three hits.
Found it.
where did the soul go
For me it's MMVs
>ywn race with your guild of Gankerros in a bunch of shitty hatchbacks blasting eurobeat again.
For all the shitty asian mmos out there, plenty of them explored incredibly niche genres and aesthetics that they are either still the sole game for or not occupied at all by anything
Drift City (Racing)
O2Jam (Rhythm Game)
MapleStory (MMO 2D Action Platformer)
Gunbound (MMO Worms)
Ragnarok Online (Isometric Pixel Art MMO)
Only recently did anything even close to GunZ come out, Naraka Bladepoint, and it was immediately insanely popular
Last Chaos
Can't wait for Lineage 3
Not even korea likes it apparently and it got pushed by another year for west.
How many times did they already try to release 'Lineage' 3? Even Aion was originally ideas for Lienage 3.
Tera was Lineage 3. It wasn't even bad.
Anyway, last good L2 was C6 Interlude (some will say C4 or C5, but they are too much of a retrograde).
>Tera
fricking bring it back. or better, make a sequel
play the private server, it's very populated and you cosmetics can be earned through regular gameplay or drops iirc
>Anyway, last good L2 was C6 Interlude (some will say C4 or C5, but they are too much of a retrograde).
I spend most of my time on some weird mix server of C5 and C6. Later played on C6 and it's propably what Im most fond of indeed.
I liked hellbound for elements and slugs/vortex crushers on nukers though. Outside of that I heavily disliked most things chaotic thrones brought.
Is AION good?
Never played it.
>tfw can hear this webm perfectly
Ahh sovl
Lineage 3 is AION
Dream Of Mirror Online
What if we make...
Dragon Quest, but online!

SWTOR
I never liked MMORPGs and found them a huge waste of time, but I somehow loved FlyFF, and it's been the only MMORPG that I've invested some time. Also TERA, but not as much as FlyFF.
I still dislike MMORPGs.

My holy trinity...
Ah.. MapleStory, MapleStory.. ah.. the music.. even now..
Ah..
in that 10% of time when it actually played as intended warhammer online was a beauty, but ea clearly had no idea what to do with it. game started out as a successor to daoc and then became pve-oriented while lacking typical pve content.
I've been playing Maplestory but getting bored of being at endgame where progression is a snails pace and based around multiple layers of terrible RNG from weekly bosses dropping extremely low drop rate gear only to blow them up when enhancing.
How is DFO these days? I saw it just got a big update?
uncharted waters online. until it arbitrarily started causing BSOD and I could never resolve the issue.
Dragonica, I'm kinda nostalgic for that era of korean mmo slop.
I would give anything to get that really nice feeling of logging into an mmo back
me too bro
why is it so hard for them to nail it nowadays?
This was my first true addiction, and I distinctly remember how social people were back then, I instantly made a friend group from the first dungeon.
The fricked up thing is that if a similar game came out there wouldn't be anyone talking or partying, this is why MMOs don't work anymore.
Yeah felt like every other month there was some new FOTM to play with Ganker or /jp/.
>FOTM to play with Ganker or /jp/.
one of my first ever friend groups honestly. nostalgic times.
Mabinogi. I actually started it around late 2021 and still enjoy it.
>Ctrl+F Eden Eternal
>0 results
Surely it wasn't THAT bad... Was it?
Loved that game, I still think it did class switching better than ffxiv and the first 5 or so zones have great music
Dofus. It's still alive and kicking, but it ain't the same boss.
flyff, but it was fricking impossible to level as a healer, and in the end everyone just wanted to get paid to level me
For me it was ROSE Online..
Priston Tale was my very first MMO so I have some fond memories abou that game, even if Pikers were blatantly overpowered compared to the other classes. I was a Paladin because their huge swords were really cool.
Mabinogi.
R1 windmill
Frick you matt from high school who insisted you had r1 in every skill but would never show any proof you lying fricking homosexual
phantasy star online 2 when it was only playable on jp servers back in 2012
this shit actually took over my life for a hot minute
God, what is it about all these korean MMOs back then that had a really good presentable sense of adventure despite the obvious flaws in them as games?
Good music, good aesthetics, not overly worried about looking realistic or western, cute, memorable enemy designs, lack of convenience/"qol" features, you actually had to put in effort to get anything done and that often involved the help of other people.
>God, what is it about all these korean MMOs back then that had a really good presentable sense of adventure despite the obvious flaws in them as games?
The naivete of 2000s internet and its users was the secret sauce. That's why nothing comes close to capturing the feeling again.
It takes so much more to impress and engross people nowadays, after the internet and (online) gaming has become such a norm in people's lives.
I miss the pirates of the Caribbean MMO. It was absolutely terrible but ye'olde ship combat is so rare and it was basically the Black Flag of it's time.
Bros I want to play another shitty KMMO again, what are my options that are not private servers of those games?
lost ark is the only recent one, can't recommend it though
if you want to play old games then maplestory is still going, closers, elsword, latale relaunched a while ago with a new publisher, tree of savior somehow still exists
>Tree of Savior
I'm a founder and I think I played maybe ten hours after launch, what a disappointment
I had a friend sucker me into buying FFXIV 1.0, I didn't even stay subbed long enough to get the legacy perks.
Aura Kingdom is my #1 played game of all time, sitting at around 3k hours. The only reason I stopped playing was because my GPU died and I couldn't afford to replace it for a few months. For some reason, I just couldn't get back into the groove after that.
aw shit, I forgot about aura kingdom
I only have maybe 300 hours in it, but it was still a gem
to this day i still get closers and soulworker mixed up
also are they SHIT or are they just shit
soul worker is complete shit
closers was kinda fun, but got boring after a while with their lackluster updates
Soulworker has coom e-girl and pretty damn good combat though. The game could have been great had they reinvest the money back in the game but no, they made a soulworker mobile which flopped and bankrupted the company
damn that's sad to hear
i was gonna check it out for the girls
guess i'll just make do with fanart now
new RO is kinda based
Which ro is this
ragnarok origin
its mobile shit, has a pc version but the UI is literally the mobile one, dont fricking bother playing it
>origin
>dont fricking bother playing it
I already am though.
It's just the graphics kinda look different. I assume it's from cutscene or something?
Is it any good?
Honestly?
No
In terms of similarities to classic RO, I think Eternal Love (pre job4) was closer than this.
Though the gacha is more forgiving than EL since it has pity.
I only play this game because my friends play it.
>tfw starting a new MMO you know nothing about, just soaking in the experience and wondering about all the cool shit awaiting you
WISH WE COULD TURN BACK TIME
all of them, Ganker
all of them.
but space cowboy online and valkyrie sky were pretty unique
allods online, never got past lvl 20 when i was a kid, now the game gives your permanent mounts at level ups, played the base game and 3 expansions. frick the rune system its liquid rancid shit
the art is top tier
Do they still have the sub server to bypass the rune bullshit?
I still listen to the L2 ost from time to time. Dion theme is peak mmo adventure soundtrack
I once went back to Flyff(new character, couldn't find my old ones) and I flew all around the maps I used to play at with my 2000s online friends. The game was completely empty. I've never had such a sad experience coming from a game.
>login back to my Vindictus after 10 years
>screen is bombarded by so many windows
>first thing I do is sift through the screens to find the friends list
>last login for nearly all is around 3000 days ago
>check my guild, only one guy has been last online since 800 days ago
Damn., wherever you all are I hope you are living the best lives.
i know one of you frickers here plays dfo because the new update convinced me to come back... for now
Aika online with Ganker, Ganker and /jp/.
There was a period in time where Ganker, Ganker, /jp/ and, at one time, /m/ would play together in open/close betas. Tera, Eden Eternal, Aura Kingdom, Cosmic Break, ToF close beta, Ragnarok Online 2 (one of the two), etc.
I played AIKA in beta and for about 6-8 months after, I still feel it has the best realm vs realm PVP of any game I've ever played. I spent most of my time just leveling my pran after I hit 50 and waiting on rantnozzle to call out a relic raid in progress, then dropped everything to go do that. I remember TERA EE and AK with the bros too though. EE has a pserv named vendetta that has one of the original devs on staff, so it's a great pserv for content since they have someone capable of doing hardcoded major updates instead of just jank spaghetti code patches.
I am not crying.
I even forced myself to play Pangya because I bought the Kooh and Arin pets in Trickster.
I LOVE RAGNAROK ONLINE
Not completely shitty by any means, but it was still one of the MMOs of all time.
It would have succeeded if they gave us more robot dominatrix waifu. Using her for just the trailers was a crime.
At least you could make your own dominatrix robowaifu.
Or a bawdbot waifu.
At least they gave us biblically accurate Kit Brinny though.
I picked flyff up again a while ago and it's pretty cool
They even ported the entire game to run in the browser
i could never get never get into maplestory but i sure did love la tale.
ROSE was probably the only real successor to Ragnarok Online in terms of feel and mechanics. Shame it never took off and all private servers are overseas so my ping is shit.
I remember playing the betas, and my child brain was super impressed by its implementation of non-interactive quest triggers that wanted you to stand in (or use an item in) a specific described-but-not-explicitly-map-markered spot somewhere for it to progress.
Especially for the ones that resulted in a unique enemy spawning in that you needed to beat for the next step of the questline.
Jade Dynasty, loved the game's class system but leveling consisted of auto grinding for hours and the game was completely p2w.
I have over 4k hours on New World

Yeah it's peak oldschool f2p mmo kino. Problem, zoom zoom?
Whatever you say, monkey.
we need to go back
fun game. wish it stayed abit longer
>we had a shot at english talesweaver
>it only lasted a week or so as a closed beta
>got told by GMs a publisher had picked it up
>radio silence
>website silently vanishes months later
this one still stings
Didn't that thing last for like a year? only played on Asian servers. Loved the game. I remember you would enter caves and there would be huge parties of people you could join just like that.
>Didn't that thing last for like a year?
global TW? nah, it was only around for a few weeks at most if my memory serves; it was hosted by gamengame at the time (they used to port over a lot of obscure korean shit to get picked up by publishers, its how stuff like trickster came out)
GMs ran around a couple days before the beta ended talking to players and stated they found a publisher but nothing ever came of it
I played the JP servers way back in the day on a really shitty vpn and had a blast, but the game was really story driven so it was kind of lost on 13 year old me
Don't know if the game is still up or not overseas, but it had a run of at least 10+ years I think, I'm honestly surprised we never saw a full english release
luna online and iris online, and some private servers for both throughout the years
Endless Ages

Even discord names have to be unique now.
>Lost ACK
Surprised at the lack of Black Desert in this thread.
Because Black Desert is trash not even worth mentioning near at least half of the games in this thread
BD is rather new, not retro enough.
>we're Maple Story only shittier looking
>by the way we also have voice acting for some reason
In a way I actually miss Wonderking. Apparently there's a bunch of legal issues going on in regard to it which is partly why it had to get shut down in the states.
Flyff was the only shitty MMO I fell for. Aside from the novelty of flying the game mechanics were barebones and the amount of grinding required was on a cosmic scale, but it had a comfy magical feeling. The login screen music will always be stuck in my head.
i've been chasing that feel for nearly two decades now, but modern mmos are nothing but fomo, dungeon finders/auto matchmaking with people you'll never see again, dailies, rep grind and 80hr/week job simulators. nu games claiming to be "oldschool" or pandering to 00s sensibilities are just autistic wiener and ball torture simulators with gatekeeping morons stroking each other's wieners in their little circlejerk.
SMT: Imagine
Is the new SMT imagine blue moon private server any good
New Moon? Yeah, it's a good server with lots of great balance adjustments, it's down for a week right now however because some tiny dick loser posted P5R and P3R model rips on the discord as a setup to cause breaching it's contract with Atlus (Atlus suits gave New Moon the OK to exist under the conditions that newer game models and properties aren't used) costing the server owner 20k to avoid the C&D.
Great game, but there's 3-4 stinkers in the community that want the game to die so badly it's their life's mission, all they think about, every day. As someone who loves the game, it's sad.
I'm still playing it
EVE was always a bit shit but I loved it anyways.
Now its a pay2win monstrosity that puts the koreans to shame.

I miss it bros.
i took to long to come out. was gonna try it as it looked like dungeon fighter but 3d
I'm surprised no one's mentioned 9 Dragons yet. It was grindy, but I had a whole lot of fun with it back in the good ol' days of '07 after Runescape shit the bed and I needed a new MMO to play.
This god damn game is still kicking, it changed publishers hundreds of times. I was there, during acclaim times when people were struggling with clan quests and those maps still had people in them. The grind was insane, but the atmosphere, music, party system, skill system was like no other. Im still playing it roughly once a year, but you reach endgame way too fast, you don't even have to touch the RTE quests, lvls going up so fast and the engame itself has a heavy P2W feel to it. I love this game, i loved it in the good old 2007 where everything took time and during those miserable small dungeons like death valley felt like an adventure.
Adventure quest Worlds, Wynncraft
>, Wynncraft
is it still around?
exotic feels not yet mentioned:

Hawken was lobby based, doesnt count. I do still miss it tho. 🙁
rf online Black folk
Fallout 76
there will never ever be another game like space cowboy online. why even live. my favorite genre died before it even began.
Kind of off-topic but blue protocol is never releasing in the west right? Underperformed in JP, radio silence for months despite releasing in "early" 2024, Amazon games is shitting the bed and even then who knows how far they went with their "localization"
>ragnarok
>shitty
You take that back.
RO was the first MMO I played so I loved it
I didn't know what a MMO was, just that my nerd friends were all playing it
Lineage 2.
It's all I played for many years after playing UO, which I also played for years.
I have so many fond memories of L2, you have no idea...
oh boy
on RO back in the day i chatted with a """"""girl"""""" from nebraska i think
if i remember correctly she was fat lmao
also tried RO2 and oh boy was that a downer
also tried flyff i think
lineage 2 never ran good on my pc back in the day
MU online.
Any new MMOs this year?
I still play swtor
Nope but there’s a few in the works. Probably in like 2-3 years we’ll see them
last descendant?
I played some game called ROSE for some time as a kid. Like a year or two. I was surprised to learn it still existed, although it was taken over by a completely new team.
>not one mention of the favela simulator
As I got older I came to terms that Tibia was a shit game, but it was /my/ game
Tibia was basically this pic till 8.5 when pussy mode was added(Blessings, Offline training, etc) and PVP limits were introduced.
You became a man and the death creep was insane, seeing someone pass by got your heart racing.
I loved this game, also it showed me all the sides Nexon had, it was some of the biggest money makers back then and it only died because Nexon decided to go full moron and moved the whole dev NA and KR team to work in Dirty Bomb and then put the special need EU dev team in charge and killed the game in 1-2 weeks.
Man I had friends in high school who would talk about this game nonstop. I never got into it, but I was always aware of it as someone also in the Nexon sphere back then.
UNBELIEVABLE
the 90 day expiring guns was such a shitty idea that was also gay in Maplestory.
Any sniper other than Arctic Wolf was garbage.
Extremely gacha heavy with the hisec cases too, it only got fun after you unlocked ANY 90 day-permanent weapon, which was kinda easy to do with the monthly events though.
pristontale and ragnarok online
TERA
Matrix Online. Those fricking morons spent huge amounts of resources into dozens and dozens of animated emotes and dances for some odd reason instead of making variety in content but it was glorious, fricking almost anything you could think of had an animated emote. Combat animations were good too, because they were tied into some odd rock paper scissors turn based thing so you didn't need to animation cancel and there was time to play awesome animations of you jumping on walls or punting someone's nuts from behind out. It was my first MMO and being able to just change classes at a phone booth also ruined me for every other mmo, hated having to level alts.
I never got around to play it how was it?
It was great and awful.
Is it worth starting DFO these days if I never bothered in the past?
it's not a coop beat-em-up anymore. You do story quests until level cap and then interact with human players there with endgame content. Endgame content is what you would expect from gearscore raids where players pay high level players to carry. Also they decided to bring back the fatigue system which functions like gacha game stamina
The whole game is a tutorial until you get to level cap, and even then you still have to do a couple storylines before you get to the grinding dungeons that matter currently. It's never been better unless you are super nostalgic for early Neople DFO before they even added Ancient Dungeons. Just know you won't be partying with people 99.99% of the time and the game still has a Fatigue system to try to make you play more than one character if you want to keep playing for the day but god help you if you actually want to run it out every day when you get to cap anyway. I can't be NEETing it up like I used to.
there was this really scifi looking mmo in a cyberpunk style city?
anyone know the name? beginning with c maybe
I remember playing and putting down that one steampunk MMO called Neo Steam. Never committed to it because I was playing other MMOs at the time but the game felt like such a fever dream. I mostly just wondered around listening to its music which I think had a lot of accordion music.
please come back wildstar..
DOFUS, I learned more french than I'd care to admit on that fricking game
Rappelz, I tried pick up and play that game multiple times and as soon as I leave the beginning island I lose interest. I remember the beginning island would take 30min to over an hour to get through because the map was so big and moving from place to place without a mount was slow as shit. Even though I never played the game fully, that game's UI is burned into my skull for some reason.
>mabinogi somehow still alive
>not only still alive but getting a full complete remake
>letting you transfer all your shit as is when its done
what the frick
what's that one tripgay's opinion on it
Its piss easy and cheap to host games nowdays BUT its hard and expensive to maintain an archaic engine.
NexusTK... pre-graphic update... I HAVE to go back...
Reminder: A good number of your favorite Korean MMOs are mobile game now.
and that's a good thing
Ragnarok was my SHIT anon, the only thing i hate in the game is the unbalance and the overpower enemies being spawned in wrong places for some fricking reason
don't you dare say "skill issue"
Nexus: The Kingdom of the Winds isn't even that good.
>LaTale uses a shitty mobile game model now
>MS uses a shitty mobile game model now
there aren't any shitty MMOs left, they are just mobile games.
and that's a good thing!
I kinda miss this shit mmo
aion
I played it twice
first the NA release
then the aion classic NA release
man I miss that shit, it was a bit disappointing how casual aion classic release but still it was fun for like a month
