Remember that Doom movie from 2005, that bombed at the box office? Had the film succeeded at the box office, there would have been a 2-disc steenbook edition. The extra disc would have even more bonus features, including a port of the original 1993 Doom video game, fully playable via the DVD player's remote. We're not fricking around, Doom '93 was almost playable on DVD players. So could a DVD player run Doom (the 1993 game, not just the movie)?
Too bad the Doom movie flopped so bad, the collector's edition of the DVD, along with the DVD player port of Doom '93, was cancelled. At least the Doom movie got a DVD release at all.

A stock minimum standard DVD player can't play Doom. I don't see why a BluRay player couldn't though.
In that case, why not have a port of Doom as a bonus feature on the Blu-Ray release of Andrzej Bartkowiak's Doom movie 2005? Doom 2005 could have a 2-disc Blu-Ray set, with the 2nd Blu-Ray containing bonus features and the original MS DOS Doom, but nooooooooo, it had to be a DVD/Blu-Ray combo set >:(
it would have had to have been in the style of myst due to dvd player limitations. dvd player games are horribly documented. there were a bunch of early dvds that game with 'games' as extras (harry potter comes to mind). there were also a few quizzes like little Britain and even deal or no deal got a dvd player port.
all these 'games' just have every single possible outcome as a 'scene' or image, and every player option is manually mapped to each screen. there were an insane number of 'scenes' in deal or no deal to make it seem like a real game.
years ago, i went down the rabbit hole of trying to make my own game for dvd players (and even vcd players since they too had very basic menuing features). you can manually map each menu option in common dvd authoring software, but this would take an insane amount of time. i wasnt able to find anything to programmaticly generate menus and scenes, so started to write my own but eventually lost interest.
super interesting topic either way OP, and hope this thread doesnt die too early
theres a small database of dvd games now it seems. this actually looks pretty good too. i wonder how smooth the scene transitions are on a real player.
that also reminds me of the 'change view' feature almost no movies used. you could change camera view during a movie (they just filmed multiple angles and made them available at certain times during the movie). i think the first spiderman used it when he was web slinging, but im not certain.
why did almost no one take advantage of all the features of the dvd player? it seems only dvds made the first year or so after its release used anything other than 'picture viewer'
In that case, why didn't Hollywood make a Myst movie? A fully playable port of Myst would have been a perfect bonus feature, because the DVD player can easily handle the game.
you dont need to make a movie to make a dvd game. the real question is why werent more games made for dvd players?
heres the 'database' i found mentioned above

oh no, its moronic!
oh no, he can't parse sarcasm because he has autism spectrum disorder!
Good point. Myst should have gotten a DVD port though.
they could have made a near 1:1 port with no missing features too (or even had dvd quality [kek] video)
also, if anyone knows of anywhere that has full dvd images available to download (mainly for the features), please post here! i have a few dvd games (deal or no deal, little britain), and would be happy to rip and share if anyone wanted them
I remember taping that movie off the TV way back when. Still have it here.
Nice, game appropriate font used. Hell yeah dude!
Very comfy
made me chuckle
i think there was a shrek one
Are you going to be the next school shooter? You sound like one you fricking moronic zoomer
