Sora WAS cool but the final few games just made him and his franchise 'meh'. But in the end, he probably is the best choice for the final character for a massive crossover game like Smash.
I'm not a Kingdom Hearts fan but my main issue with Sora was that I saw him as a Final Fantasy/Disney crossover character who would only be able to reference one half of the crossover.
My big hope was that they would make Master Hand a real character that could be used in Stamina battles but I knew it would never happen.
Kind of "meh" to me, but that's still far better than the anger inducing FP1 finale of Byleth or the disappointing base game finale of... shit, just that entire Direct in general.

It was a pretty good finale, character from a crossover game joins a crossover fighter. Nintendo is 100% going to try and bring it back with another season pass after MK8D gets its last update though. They need something to add to the expansion pass, and nobody really actually cares about Splatoon.

Nobody plays or remembers any of the third party never evers. Sora, Sephiroth, Steve, Terry - all totally irrelevant and forgotten. Turns out people wanted mascots (Pac-Man, Banjo, etc.) and Nintendo characters, which is all the roster should have been in the first place.

I just wish I had played Banjo-Kazooie, FF7, Kingdom Hearts (I actually played after Sora was revealed and I really enjoyed it) or Fatal Fury/KoF. That way I would have liked the reveals a little bit more.

The problem with Sora is that he is roo NICE, to the point that he is fricking boring (he forgive Xenahort after he LITERALLY killed his waifu, I don't care about the bullshit "power of awakening", Sora should have gone mad). The problem with Sora is that Smash fans are the biggest gayots on the face of the earth and I hope Sakuria continues to spit in their face.
Nintendo's mistake was just letting any fricker on the internet vote in the ballots. It should've been restricted only to people on a switch, it just ended up being a popularity contest among people who never touched a smash game in their life. I seriously doubt there are lot of people that actually play smash that cared about Kingdom Hearts or Sora.

I just remember seeing a bunch of Symphonia fans gunning for him to make it on a Smash forum a while back. It was really impressive how autistic they were about seeing their guy finally make it. Realistically, I think his chance is long gone, as you say (unless Symphonia gets a proper Remake someday), but it was interesting seeing how desperately his fans were clinging onto the hope of him getting in while insisting he's definitely still relevant.
