Instead they wanted to scalp everyone for new models even harder than normal and made them sized different to have a paper thin excuse to make all old transports unusable by Primaris and maybe vice-versa with the new Primaris transports and oldmarines I've checked out on it. It was stupid in every way.
The issue, and why they tried to test the waters, is that having a female custodian is not 100% impossible. It's just 99.9% incompatible with all previous lore. Custodian are hand crafted by procedures that are as much esoteric as technological, each one of them masterpieces, and as such, while all Custodes were always males, always expected to be males, always male in lore, and always spoken as male, it isn't... _technically_, *absolutely* impossible than a Custodes could be female.
Space Marines are mass produced (by a processus that kills 99% of all aspirants but mass produced still), a process that is explicitely incompatible with males.
So they GW pretty much chose the biggest change in the lore they could do that would not be completely, totally, absolutely impossible to swallow. And a lot of morons are doing the *ackhtually*, while missing the point: Custodes aren't female. They never were. It's just not absolutely impossible that one could have been made in strange circumstances and an alternate universe that is not W40k.

I've read from here, but one way to introduce female custodes into the setting is by having the Captain-General Trajann Valoris announce that they're going to recruit aspirants from sons and as well as daughters into their armada. Guilliman is making the custodes numbers dwindle rapidly by sending them throughout the galaxy and having them take only from male aspirants isn't replacing the losses quickly enough (remember there are only 10k custodes in the entire galaxy). So, they now recruiting female aspirants and here's a reason why there are female custodes.

But much like tyranids, there weren't anything to latch on and like about aside from the theme which is why people take this as the only positive retcon.
