Difference is that in the past different games were made for different people and devs understood that. When I played a game made in Asia the characters were all asian and were made with the assumption you knew that culture, the same goes with europe, america and the very, very few african/west asian games made.
Moden wokeness is about destroying cultural differences and forcing everyone together causing some demographics to be forced out. This also affects the gameplay with most high budgert and even mid-budget games focusing on appealing to the largest audience that focusing on a specific group. This is making games bland and un imaginative.
If devs cared about representation then they would make lots of lower budget games aimed at different groups, like how it was in the 90s. Games featuring all white casts and sexy women that appeal to men could then co-exists with games that focus on LGBT, or blacks.
