The 4090 has 83 teraflops and the ps4 has like 1.8

would all those flops make the games more fun?

using teraflops as some sort of measure of how powerful a gpu is is just a marketing thing. it's like bits, a random technical spec that marketers decided to use in marketing

                Yee Yee Ass

Alternative to what, floating point operations / sec are not the only thing that matter in graphics processing. The CPU handles the high level logic, delegating low level stuff like geometry calculations to the graphical processor. In easy words, If you have a celeron cpu from 1999 your brand new 4090 will be just a room heater, since it will receive a job, do it, then wait till the next one comes. Same bottleneck applies if you have some slow ass high-level memory needed to store the results.

if tflops meant anything, AMD's 7900 XTX would be much more powerful than Nvidia's RTX 4090 (61 vs 48 TF) in reality they trade blows

that just means amd produces better hardware than nvidia. whats your point?

Stronger hardware is so game devs can save money, not so the consumers can get better games.

graphics have been stagnate since the ps4. I honestly dont think they should get any better just because they already cost too much to make and companies are making less and less games. the reason the PS2 had so many games was because it wasnt hard to make games for it.

Improvements in hardware have only made games worse. More powerful GPUs only give publishers excuses to be lazy.
Restrictions of old systems unironically were the reason games ran well and were full of soul, because you need a creative and skilled person to work around them.

there was a small period in time where that was true but pc gaming was consumers getting forced to constantly upgrade to play new games for the majority of its life. but those games were actually fricking worth it and did cool new shit that other games couldn't, we're at the worst of both worlds now with people being forced to upgrade but the games are the exact same. unreal.

4090 has 41 TFLOPS. NVIDIA started fudging the numbers with Ampere.

~O.72% of users on Steam have a 4090. Why would devs cater to less than a percentage of the overall gpu market? That makes no sense. Considering people are still using 970s, PC titles need to have scalability across a range of differently powered gpus and are not able to cater to just the highest of the high end.

I'm not sure how things are working on PC, but in the smartphone space, the high-end phones are a scam.

Over time your high-end cpu will gradually have more and more of your chip processors allocated to working for the corporations controlled by american federal government. Yes they literally steal your processing power for things like folding@home, crypto, super computer projects, etc.
You will just notice sometimes your high-end smartphone gets hot and CPU cycles are being wasted even though you're not running anything.

Huawei pretty much confirmed what was going on back in 2021 when they launched the P40 Pro.
When they got kicked out of the Google Spyware system, they were able to reclaime these resources from being stolen, and proudly bragged about how their new P40 Pro would not "lose performance" even if the smartphone was 3 years old.
They provided some graph about how their previous phones gradually lost performance during year 1, year 2 and year 3.

It is called Negative bias temperature instability (NBTI). Chip perf will degrades overtime.

NBTI effects on CPUs are negligible. You need a lot of stress for it to kick in.

          Anonymous

I read paper in which CPU in data center only work for avg 7 years until its perf is unacceptable. If you knew nbti, it should be easy for you to find.

Funny how my dual Pentium III, Atari 1040STe, Amigas and whatnot I have lying around don't suffer from this issue.

          Anonymous

Because modern cpu has much lower voltage, the voltage delta caused by nbti is more significant. Additionally, the extra power consumption is much higher.

There's malware for phones now that runs ads while your screen is off so companies get ad revenue and views without the consumer knowing. Peoples phones are becoming a way for other people to make money, it's sad.
