Being the previous world champion makes him automatically a more proven contender than anyone else in the PWT. Also, Leon's not categorized as a dragon user and the competition's fricking Lance and Iris, so that's just a sad thing to try and use as a metric of strength. But keep reaching, you won't get there but it's nice that you try.

Megas are at least in GO, which the anime also promotes.
It's worse for Z-moves because those aren't available ANYWHERE right now and are still shilled in the anime.
Those sync moves in Masters are basically Z-moves.
The issue is that you have to pass actual trials to use Z-moves and it's apparently easier to get Mega bands than Max bands, since Iris couldn't get one.
It's the other way around, mega stones were established as so rare not even the professor researching mega evolution had one at first, and you'd have to dedicate lots of time searching for one if you wanted one. Z-Crystals on the other hand was something anyone could get by just going to one of the guys handing them out and passing a quick test.
The anime suddenly giving everyone and their mom a mega is terrible writing going completely against what they established earlier.
They weren't rare in XY, were made even more common ORAS, and the anime never even hinted at it being rare. People could get Mega Stones if they wanted, they were even being sold in stores, the issue was knowing all the steps involved in using it.

Sycamore, the guy that actually researches mega evolution, has to beg Diantha to let him research her Gardevoir because she's the only person in the entire world known to have a mega. Alan sets out to find a mega stone to aid their research and spends years looking for one with no luck. It was heavily implied that people that had mega Pokemon shut the frick up about it and kept it a secret unless they knew their opponent had one as well. In the league, the only people besides Alan and the previously established guys from the first mega special to have any were two super nerds you could believe would dedicate tons of time searching one out.
They were absolutely hinted at being incredibly rare and not something Joe Average had a chance of obtaining.
That wasn't the stones being rare, anon, it was the information around them being rare. The anime had random nobodies with Megas even in the Kalos seasons, the Mega Evolution specials were just written like shit fanfic because that's exactly what they were.

No they're not. That store selling Kanto mega stones is a video game only thing (and in the video game Sycamore DID have copies of those stones), and aside from those almost every mega stone is found postgame and attributed to SYCAMORE figuring out how to use the Sundial to locate them.

Literally every spinoff has Megas, even the evolutions specials had Megas. Home got a Mega Evolution update. The only branch of the franchise that doesn’t have Megas is, you guessed it, the main games.
It's almost as if they've anointed them the gimmick of the spin-offs.
